In search of Abbe Faria: The hypnotic vision of a Goan pioneer

Kator re Bhaji: The year 2006 marks the 250th Birth Anniversary of Jose
Custodio de Faria, a son of Goa, who is widely regarded as the father of
hypnotism. Isabel Santa Rita Vas embarks on a journey to document the
history and achievements of Abbe Faria through a series of interviews
with people who have studied or encountered the Abbe in some way or the
other. Her search for the essence of Abbe Faria is filmed by Cecil Pinto.
This documentary is a tribute of respect for the Abbe - arguably the
greatest Goan ever. It hopes to inspire others to take up the cause for
Abbe Faria to be given his due place of prominence in Goan history.

Please watch, and share.

Cheers!
Cecil

Dear Augusto,

astonished at your indignation especially considering that you had recently

Dear Sebastian

I don't see why you should find it surprising that I should be interested
in Fr Victor Ferrao's opinions. They are significant as they reflect an
important strand of current Church thinking given his position as Dean of
Rachol Seminary.

However just because I have edited their writing it doesn't mean that I
neccesarily endorse everything that Fr Victor or Adv. Fernandes says. And
so if I agree with his views about the evolution of Hinduism, I do not
quite agree with what he says about the Gawdas and their Maan.

I repeat what I said elsewhere that I believe that Adv Joao is at least
partly motivated by the fact that Christian Gawda pride can get its best
support from the Govt. and not from the Church through the instrument of
Reservations for Scheduled Tribes - a reservation which cuts across
religious grounds. I also believe that the Church has not sufficiently
publicized the Govt. schemes so that the Gawdas can avail of these. I
understand that this is sheer cussedness on their part.

However I also concur with what Adv. Joao says regarding the systematic way
in which the Church has discriminated against the Gawdas. This is a shame
against the Catholic community.

While this has happened in the past what I am indignant about now is the
'spiral of silence' that has greeted the publication of Adv John's essay.
It seems that instead of addressing the injustices that Gawdas face
socially economically and politically, their voice when not deliberately
suppressed, is simply ignored by not just the Church clergy but also the
more affluent of its members

As regards Fr Victor's fondness of a 'Theory-fied' style of writing I
entirly sympathise with you. Theory often tends to be like a tale / Told
by and idiot, full of sound and fury/ Signeifying Nothing However it can be
terribly intimidating for the reader.

Finally thanks for all the information about Ambelim and the Gawdas.
Regards
Augusto

[Goanet] South Goa Teachers rock to Fuller Life tunes

2013-08-21 Thread Leo D'Mello
Fatima Convent High School in association with the Academy of
Self-Actualization conducted this annual Faculty Enrichment workshop, the
Fuller Life Program at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao.

The chief guest for the Inaugural ceremony was Archbishop Felipe Neri
Ferrao, Bishop of Goa and Daman. He gave a clarion call to the Teaching
Faculty to treat their profession as a Vocation and a holy mission. He had
the audience spell bound with his humor and his down to earth sharings.

He later declared open the website of the Fatima school -
www.fatimaconventschoolgoa.com

Dr Carmo Gracias gave a witty and humorous welcome to the dignitaries. He
also thanked (tongue-in-cheek) Fatima school for providing wonderful life
partners to many ex-students of Loyola!

Rev. Fr. William Rodrigues presented the key note address with many
anecdotes and parables to drive home the point of the importance of a caring
teacher, well informed to transform the students both academically as well
as holistically.

Ms. Gianna Mendes spoke about her love of teaching and mentoring students.
She mentioned the immense fulfillment she derives in bringing in good
education and values to her students.

Sr Regina Gretta proposed a vote of thanks to the VIPs, coordinating
committee and the teachers attending the Fuller Life workshop.

Fuller Life Program - Advisory Board members; Dr Max Desa, Dorothy Desa,
Bruno Gomindes were also present. Around 120 teachers from various schools
of South Goa participated whole heartedly in the day long workshop.

The program was coordinated by businessman and travel guru, Bruno Gomindes.

The full day seminar-workshop was conducted by Leo D'Mello, life coach,
management guru and author of the best selling self-development book,
Fuller Life; the book, a journey. With the help of scintillating
multi-media, witty anecdotes and an unique interactive presentation style,
the teachers were challenged, stimulated, motivated and enlightened. The
program stretched from breathing techniques to meditation, to a better
understanding of how the brain functions. Leo, also a certified NLP
Practitioner, demonstrated techniques of phobia cure and trauma (emotional)
detox. The teachers danced through the work-outs and relaxed in the
hypnotic afternoon-siesta!

As Fr Willy had forewarned, Leo was the magician who left the teachers
asking for more. The teachers left with a renewed vigor and motivation to
fulfill their vocation and to mould the hearts and minds of the students
entrusted in their care. During feedback time, various teachers shared of
how the program has stimulated and motivated them to be better teachers.

Pictures of the event are shared on Dropbox. You may download from this

2013-08-21 Thread George Pinto
Dear Jose,

It gives me to no pleasure to be publicly critical of the Goan legal
profession. Some might write my opinion is not based on a scientific study or
based on anecdotal evidence. Whatever their excuses or denials, the opinions I
heard last week ranged from lawyers are no different than politicians to
none of them are to be trusted, all crooks to do not expect them to do any
good for Goa they are only interested in themselves. Very sad, considering I
consider lawyers as officers of the court, meant to uphold the law and not
break it. In some countries they are leading social change and are a force for
justice, not subverting it like in Goa.  Fortunately, there are a few
exceptions.

[Goanet] Gold smugglers

2013-08-21 Thread Mervyn Lobo
Smugglers held with gold worth Rs 1.3 crore concealed in their rectums
TNN | Aug 21, 2013.

PANAJI: In the largest seizure of smuggled gold that Goa has seen, two Sri
Lankan nationals and an Indian from Kerala were held at Dabolim International
airport by customs officers on Tuesday, for smuggling 4.5 kg of the precious
metal concealed in their rectums. The haul, valued at over 1.3 crore, was being
smuggled into the country from the Middle-East.

The three unidentified men were traveling on an Air India flight from Dubai,
via Mumbai to Goa.

We are yet to establish the link between the three, but we suspect that they
had received the smuggled gold on board the flight, and had concealed it in
their rectums just before landing, customs commissioner V PC Rao said.

With the price of gold crossing the Rs 31,000 mark (per ten grams) in India,
cases of gold smuggling are becoming increasingly common, Rao said. In the past
few months alone, the department has intercepted six passengers arriving in Goa
from various Gulf countries, carrying small amounts of gold into the country.

As gold is not in high demand in Goa, we suspect that the couriers are sent
here to divert the authorities' attention. The men who carry the yellow metal
are merely laborers or couriers who are given instructions to deliver the
'goods' to people in Mumbai, Chennai or Kerala, Rao said. This is the first
time officials have caught three carriers on the same flight, he added.

In the earlier cases, the couriers had concealed gold bars in their luggage,
inside their footwear or inside electronic equipment. One man had wrapped the
gold in carbon paper and hidden it inside his music system. Our officials keep
an eye out for suspicious behavior and have the observational power to read
people, he said.

In Tuesday's case, the gold was found wrapped in condoms and stuffed up the
rectums of two men. The man from Kerala had taped over 600 grams of gold to his
inner thigh. Customs officers intercepted them because their 'walking style',
no doubt altered due to their uncomfortable cargo, raised suspicions.

The Keralite revealed that he had to deliver the gold to a contact in Kasargod
in the Kerala-Karnataka border. The Sri Lankan citizens have not disclosed
anything, and all three have been remanded to judicial custody.

[Goanet] food saecurity bill

2013-08-21 Thread Nelson Lopes
Food security bill

The UPA II Govt is rushing the food security bill after a gap of 9 years in
saddle and Congress having ruled for 60 years. Many states like
Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu etc .have in place such an arrangement of
distribution of subsidised grains and the Central Govt could well draw
from their experience. The public distribution should have been stream
lined and put in place for such an exercise on a massive scale

The BJP with its amendments is an attempt to delay or not be seen as
opposing it and so all other parties for the impact it can have on their
political fortunes in the next General election. UPA II is capitalising on
their dilemma to gain undue mileage as the saviour of the below poverty
Indians

The food has been rotting in godowns and is unfit for human or animal
consumption and yet the Govt does not consider this wastage. The doles by
way of cheap grain are going to have cascading effect on the economy. No
budgetary provision is made. From where is the Govt going to fund such
financial support. The prices of all essential commodities have touched the
roof and with increase in gas, petrol, fertilizers, vegetables and onions
the burden is unbearable on aam admi. God forbid if there is drought or
poor harvest, the food will have to be imported at great cost to the
exchequer Rupee has already hit rock bottom with reference to the dollar,
which means imports will be a drain

There should have been massive investments and incentives for agricultural
production, which is most discouraging; Farmers are committing suicides,
unable to pay the loans NREGA is not an employment generation scheme by
providing one member of the family employment for a fixed number of days

The food security bill is good on the idea, but low on implementation with
respect to distribution, leakages and proper identification, survey of the
target population All pros and cons should be debated thread bare by taking
all the parties on board before launching the programme The rush is only a
political gimmick to divert the attention of uncontrolled inflation into a
tailspin Heavens will not fall if the bill is delayed by one year

2013-08-21 Thread augusto pinto
If Isabel says Jeet is good then Jeet is good.

I notice also that the timing of the event - 4 - 5pm may suit those who
need a siesta.

So I would say - please go if you want an enriching cultural experience. It
will not only be enlivening but fun.

Regards
Augusto

[Goanet] Financial crises

2013-08-21 Thread Marshall Mendonza
I do not want to sound like a doomsayer. However, India is facing a huge
economic crises which may hit all of us within the next 6 months. Here are
some of the danger signals;
1. The economy of the USA has revived and investments are flowing back to
the USA. The net outflow of FII funds from India in the last 6 months has
been enormous. FDI's have dropped substantially.
2. The rupee is collapsing by the day. The UK Pound has hit a century.
India's import bills are mounting, putting pressure on imports like oil,
thereby fueling inflation.
3. Industrial growth is down to 2%.
4. Interest rates are hardening. Homes, cars and other financing will
become costlier.
5. There is hardly any job creation. Unemployment is running high. MBA's
and engineers are unemployed. Seats in Management and engineering colleges
are going abegging ( some as high as 50%) including IIT's.
6. There is a logjam in Parliament. The opposition BJP will not allow
Parliament to function. As a result, important economic legislations are
held up.
7. Various opinion polls show that neither the Congress or the BJP are
likely to come anywhere near a majority in the polls due early next year
with over 250 seats going to regional parties. Thereby accentuating
political instability.
8. India's foreign exchange reserves are precarious and just enough to
cover the next 6 months import bills.
9. Petrol prices are hitting new highs every fortnight. Car sales are down
for the first time in over 20 years.
10. Share markets are in turmoil and have fallen more than 1500 points in 3
consecutive days.

It is time for all of us to tighten our belts and cut down on unnecessary
expenditure. exercise prudence on purchases and cut out spending on luxury
articles. Those who are planning on job changes would be wise to hold on to
whatever they have, unless certain.

More insights from our residential financial guru Gabe would be most
welcome. Last time he predicted the fall of the Sensex to a dot.

[Goanet] GMPF flays govt, takes a dig at Sanquelim MLA

2013-08-21 Thread samir umarye
--
Samir Umarye

BICHOLIM: The Goa Mining People’s Front on Tuesday came down heavily on the
government and also took a dig at Sanquelim MLA Dr Pramod Sawant for
failing to turn up for the meeting.

Surprisingly, GMPF’s statement comes just a day after the MLA had publicly
expressed his support to the cause during the meeting at Sanquelim on
Monday.

The GMPF meeting at Pale was attended by about 500 mine dependents from
Pale.

AITUC General Secretary Adv Raju Mangeshkar, Christopher Fonseca, GMPF
Convenor Suhash Naik, Sandeep Parab, Suresh Desai and Chandrakant Gawas
were among others present for the meeting.

Speaking on the occasion, Suhash Naik highlighted the plight of the mine
dependents and said the life of the people in mining belt is becoming worse
from bad.

“ There is rise in the cost of living in the State and it is becoming
difficult for the common person to sustain in this condition.

There is a need to resume mining in the State and all should come forward
and support the cause in Panjim on August 29,” stated Naik and asked why
the government took time to resolve the issue.

The speakers also came down heavily on Dr Sawant for not attending the
meeting and questioned his stand over the issue. They also sought to know
why he was quiet over the issue and asked why he did not turn up for the
meeting despite of an invitation.

Fonseca said there is no other option than to fight for the common cause so
that the mining operation is resumed. “ There is a need of awareness among
the people and everyone should come to Panjim for the rally and show the
real strength to the government,” Fonseca said.

The meeting also attacked the NGOs who they said are against mining and the
common people.

[Goanet] Food security bill

2013-08-21 Thread U. G. Barad

Mr. Nelson Lopes has covered most of the points concerning food security
bill that is rushed in the parliament for its approval.

Whatever is the outcome of this bill in the parliament; most people are
calling this bill as 'Congress Party's Own Security Bill (Food Scam)' in
name of food for all poor people.'

U. G. Barad

On Wed, 21 Aug 2013 Nelson Lopes nellope...@gmail.com wrote:

RESPONSE: Seems simple but it is not - I think it is a matter of confidence
- out flows from China has not affected that Country; in fact the Yuan has
gotten stronger!

Europe is supposed to be up the creek, yet the Euro is breaking higher,
currently around 1.34 - even though JP Morgans's finest has called it at
year end rate of 1.24. Sterling is getting too strong - markets getting
ahead of themselves. I think there are a lot of Dollar Bulls cutting out
long positions against the Euro. Once the USD starts to tank the Rupee
should stabilise and come better.

In my opinion the only way to curb outside flows from India, is to lift
daily interest rates to 20 percent and much, much more to cut out the
speculators ( Raise the swap level rates) which will affect the domestic
market but not to the extent of killing off the economy. The U.K had to do
this in the mid Eighties; the Americans had to do this around '81 when
daily interest rates were held at 20 percent and above.

I am retired now - so cannot test the market! I would not call myself a
Financial Guru, I was the Chief FX and Money Markets Dealer for Irving
Trust Co, ( 1 Wall Street, New York) now called BNY Mellon, in Singapore
and in Hong kong. I worked for Riyad Bank in Jeddah and then in Riyad. I
also worked for Prince Abdul Rahman bin Abdullah in Riyadh as his Financial
advisor. I tried trading for my own account - too stressful - lost a
bundle... take your money and run...I thank the Good Lord for the blessings
showered on me and my family.

Lastly I must have had one too many if ever, I had predicted the Senex to
get to a dot! I have a sure bet, take it or leave it, I predict the Senex
will get to 20,000 before it gets to a dot, now how's that for a guaranteed
deal?
