political pulse
EUGENE CORREIA

What lies ahead?

Political pundits and those who are anti- AAP are awaiting the results of
Arvind Kejriwal’s many promises, including making Indian politics
corruption free and introducing better governance. The AAP is a new twist
to Goa's politics. Where it goes depends upon its success in making inroads
into the public mind and heart A s the year drew to a close, the Vishnu
Wagh incident where he was beaten up allegedly by members of his own party,
sums up what ' s wrong with Goa's politics. The MLA has been a thorn in the
BJP’s side and his verbal outbursts has made the party nervous, more so
those who held power. His fight and his predicament of which way to turn,
perhaps for some political gain, is the same of those in the forefront of
making Goa a better place to live and work in. But like many others who
left the Congress to jump on the BJP bandwagon, Wagh may not be further
welcomed into the Congress. Joining the Aam Admi Party ( AAP), if he's
welcome, can be an option for him in the current circumstances.

Or he can start another party as plodding alone in Goa’s political scenario
can be a losing proposition.

The AAP could be a thorn in BJP's side. The party has come out flying in
Delhi and has staked a claim to the MP seats in North and South Goa. If the
party succeeds, there could be a new thrust in Goa's politics. It could
spring a surprise if its candidates defeat the sitting MPs, just as it
sprung a surprise by ousting the Congress government in Delhi.

AAP has on board two faces that are easily recognizable in Goa-- that of
popular singer Remo Fernandes and activist Dr Oscar Rebello. The latter has
earned some political stripes and public admiration. Remo's disdain for
politicians is wellknown through his album " Politicians don't know how to
rock ' n' roll." If the AAP nominates him as a candidate for one of the Lok
Sabha seats and he wins, then perhaps he would be fully a politician. Can
he then " rock" Goa’s politics? It's sometimes necessary to be inside
politics to change politics. Let's remember what US President Lyndon B
Johnson said during the civil struggle, " It's probably better to have him
inside the tent pissing out, than outside the tent pissing in." Politics
can be strange. Political pundits and those who are anti- AAP are awaiting
the results of Arvind Kejriwal’s many promises, including making Indian
politics corruption free and introducing better governance. The AAP is a
new twist to Goa's politics. Where it goes depends upon its success in
making inroads into the public mind and heart. Dr Oscar Rebello has said
that AAP should take up the regional plan. The development of Goa is the
way ahead for any party that comes to power.

How to go about it should be the priority for such a party.

Would the AAP take away the supporters of The United Goans Democratic Party
( UDGP) and the Su- Raaj party, both heralded as local entities? No doubt
the UGDP was a potent opposing force at one time but it has lost its sting,
though some electoral success has kept its flag flying.

The " third space" in Goa's politics that these parties occupied may well
be gone in the new hands of the AAP. Groups such as the newly formed Goa
for Goans ( GFG) and the Save Goa Front ( SGF), which contested the
elections, may lose their already tenuous influence in Goa. Whatever comes
in the future, the AAP presence in Goa may have sent shivers down the spine
of such parties and groups as well as put the national parties on notice.
The winds of change that blew over Delhi should come down Goa's way. To
cleanse the Goa government's augean stables is of prime importance. The
Manohar Parrikar government has failed so far to live up to expectations
and it's unlikely the Congress can make any significant inroads. It has
injected John Fernandes, a former Rajya Sabha MP, into its bloodstream.
Fernandes is no " newbie" to Goa's politics but he's been in the shadows
for too long, only occasionally making his voice heard. The Congress, it
seems, wanted an uncontroversial person at the helm, and Fernandes fitted
the bill. But will he wield real power in a party dominated by those who
have been former chief ministers and ministers? Some of its MLAs behave
like " chotta nawabs" and run their constituencies with unchastened power.
The Congress High Command has turned a Nelson's eye to the abuse of these
Congressmen. But Rahul Gandhi has set the ball rolling to make Congress the
party it once was and may be to steal a march over AAP in the fight against
corruption, which is endemic in India.

Goa's economy may have been shattered and the all- powerful Goa Chamber of
Commerce and Industry ( GCCI) has requested the centre to come to the aid
of Goa. In hindsight, one has to consider what J C Almedia, former chief
secretary, noted that Pratapsing Rane, then the CM, gave wrong financial
statements to the Rajiv Gandhi government at the centre. Now the chicken
has come hom

Jeep scandal of 1948 was the beginning. Just one year after India's
independence. The same bloke then spread unfounded rumours about Goa before
invading it. Just so that he could continue in power.

[Goanet] College Choir function on Saturday, Jan 4, at Panjim

2014-01-02 Thread Frederick Noronha
College Choir function on Saturday, Jan 4, at Panjim

Goanet

It faced its first audiences in December 2012 after being
formed in March of that year. Its birth came about almost
accidental -- when a film crew wanting to include a choir
performance. Today it is called the College Choir.

"There are today 18 members in the choir between the age of
17-22 years. We call it the College Choir of the Kala
Academy, because its members come from diverse colleges of
Goa," says the 79-year-old live wire Jean Kalgutkar, who
trained the group.

It was initially made up of Kala Academy students. Later,
more were recruited by word of mouth. "We expanded it, and
started meeting other interested people. Some of the
original members dropped out too," says Kalgutkar.

What were the challenges in putting together such an
experiment? Says she: "Out of 18, nine could not read music.
So I would play it on the piano, and they would record it on
their phones and the learnt it at home. The phones were a
great help, most have a recording facility today!"

But Kalgutkar has gratitude for other reasons too: "They
learn very quickly. They're musical kids. They pick up
melodies very fast."

Kalgutkar has been in Goa for the past 12 years, after moving
down from Mumbai. She told this correspondent: "I have no
regrets at all. One of the high point of the stay here has
been the starting of this choir. For the first time in my
life, I'm training a four-part choir. Otherwise, in the last
40 years, I've been teaching a girls school -- first in
Bombay, at the JB Petit School and then I came here it was
the Kala Academy, which had a girls choir with only young
boys who have soprano voices. I've always longed to train a
four-part mixed choir."

Kalgutkar is to be 80 in May 2014, and has been teaching
music from 1968. "Before that, I was a housewife. When my
mother-in-law came to live with us, I felt free to go out of
the house, she completely took over the household duties."

Jean started off as a piano player for a singing teacher, in
Girton High School at Grant Road. Then taught at the Convent
of Jesus & Mary's and St Anns's, both located in Bombay
(Mumbai's) Fort locality. Then came her stint at the J.B.
Petit School. "It was a fantastic school. The principal was
an educationist of the best kind, letting children talk of
everything. A very open and stimulating school. I really
enjoyed my 14 years there," she reminiscences.

Health issues prompted her to come to Goa. "Pollution and
dust got to me. I was on heavy medication," she adds.

Says Kalgutkar, sprightly and with an infectious style of
inspiring her musical students: "I think senior citizens can
contribute more than young people, who are tied down with
children and household duties. We're free, with no
responsibilities, and lots of free time. More senior
citizens should come forward and do something. Like raising
literacy levels in underpriviledged areas." She has also
taught at the Hamara School for the underpriviledged for
awhile, in Panjim government colony, at Sant Inez.

What are her views on musical education in today's Goa?

Says she: "I don't find it satisfactory. I don't find the
Trinity College (of London) syllabus developing the
musicianship of a child. We perhaps need to follow the
continental method, which could offer a better all-round
musical education, than the British."

She rues the demise of the Church's promotion of music
education, that exists in the Goa of the past, and allowed so
many from here to flourish in the field of music. "At the
school level music should be a subject, taking the place of
the old parish musical training that they got," she suggests.

Kalgutkar adds: "But overall, I have a problem about Western
music. It's made out to be the only music in the world.
It's so sad that we faintest idea of what goes on in Indian
music, which is even derided. I feel very strongly that,
specially in Goa, if you're not Westernised you're not
considered cultured. As if Western culture is the only
culture in the world! The wonderful tradition of Indian
music is completely unknown to our [the Catholic] community."

She says: "Children are sometimes so backward where rhythm is
concerned. On the other hand, you seen ten-year-old boys
sitting in the tabla class who can play complex rhythms on
the tabla. Why can't we learn from them?"

  ---
The College Choir performs on Saturday, January 4,
2014 at the Kala Academy Black Box, at 6.30 pm.
The event is unticketed and open to all (priority
for those entering early). This will be followed
by an hour of community Carol singing.

[Goanet] And The Corruption Goes On

2014-01-02 Thread roland.francis
The Indian Armed Forces was once the bastion of everything good about India.
Courage, loyalty, selflessness, equality, discipline, endeavour to excel.

But over the years like every other institution in the country, the qualities
that had made it unique have been corroded.

The latest scandal that has caused the government to cancel the Augusta
Westland helicopter deal reaches up to even a former chief of the air force S P
Tyagi.

In a highly disciplined force where obeying orders can mean laying your life on
the line, it is imperative that the ones giving those orders must be above
moral reproach. Alas, some Indian commanders have not been meeting that high
standard lately.

If India was not prepared for China in 1962 then one can say with all the
corruption scandals unearthed in recent years in the forces,  that should a two
pronged Pakistan-Chinese intrusion occur, India will be humiliated. Already
China has warned of war if India absorbs Bhutan which India has no choice but
to do to prevent China encircling its North East territories. This has been
downplayed in the Indian media.
