2014-02-16 Thread Angela Ferrao
I'm not sure if it was me who voiced this issue, but I have noticed this,
and it is disturbing. It does not matter that I don't have anyone working
in the shipping line.

On a flight to Goa recently, an exhausted looking man was sitting next to
us. It turned out that he was a shippie returning home after a marathon
journey, long lay overs, convoluted routes, forgotten mobile at one of the
numerous security checks. The poor man had sat in the wrong seat because he
had read the wrong boarding pass; he had a handful of them.
He told us that the company rejected any request to book him on a better
route.

He was headed to Quepem and was supposed to call his brother. He didn't
mind losing his phone of course but he was supposed to call his brother,
who was to meet him. That was my brush with a Goan shippie returning home.

[Goanet] Goan Shippies Deaths

2014-02-16 Thread Marshall Mendonza
Roland Francis:
Anybody know how Goan crew on cruiseliners are dying in droves??

What is the cause of death of so many young men?

Response:
A few years ago while flying from Goa to Bombay, I got into a casual
conversation with my neighbour who happened to be a shippie. This is his
story.

Hailing from Candolim, he worked earlier as a Roomboy at Taj Fort Aguada.
The job was seasonal from October to April coinciding with the peak foreign
tourist arrivals. Thereafter he was laid off with no compensation. He heard
from other shippies about the Caribbean Cruises and the grand pay and so
decided to apply for a job. He was called for an interview which he
attended at his own expense and was selected for the job.

He joined the cruise at Miami at his own cost. He was made to sign a
contract to work for 9 months with no holidays, including Sundays, no
off-days, no leave. Working hours were of 16 hours per day. The base salary
was low and the bulk was variable pay mainly made up of tips/ incentives.
In a good month, the gross salary could go up to Rs 150,000. With food free
and on the house, this was pure savings.

Life aboard the Cruise Liner was tough. He had to clean and tidy up 30
rooms every day, twice, spread over two decks. Many of the passengers were
filthy rich, selfish, arrogant and demanding. Any mistake or error would
result in a complaint made against him, for which a part of his incentives
would be deducted. He was on beck and call all day long. He had to pander
to the whims and fancies of the passengers who would ask him to clean and
tidy up their rooms at odd times. And so he had to go back and forth
without rest. He was trained to accept that the customer was always right,
even when he was wrong, and so had to endure their temper tantrums.

His sole companions were fellow goans who worked in the kitchen. Fed up of
eating the same rich food daily, his fellow goans would rustle up some goan
homemade stuff which they enjoyed and relished.

Emotionally and psychologically he was scarred with no family member close
by in whom he could confide or share his troubles or difficulties. With no
break even for a single day, even when the ship berthed at a port, it was
nothing short of slave working conditions. He could not even go to Church
to hear Mass during his period of contract.

He had to keep his employers and passengers in good humour at all times as
otherwise his contract would not get renewed after he enjoyed his break.
After working for a few years and enduring the hardships, he got married
and constructed a big, beautiful house in Candolim, and in the process
exhausted all his savings.

Just then misfortune struck. While climbing down the stairs aboard the
ship, he missed a step and came tumbling down, in the process breaking the
bone of his leg. He was given first aid and laid up in bed as there was no
Orthopedic doctor on board. On reaching port after some days, he was taken
to a doctor. The doctor attended to him and he was back on the ship. During
the days when he was invalid, he received no wages. Once he was back on his
feet, he realised that the surgery was not done properly. The bones were
not set right and he was left with one leg short and a permanent limp. This
made his work more difficult as now his speed and mobility was restricted.
On completion of his contract, he flew down to India and immediately went
to consult an Orthopedic surgeon.

Unfortunately, by then the bones had set permanently, and the Orthopedic
surgeon could do nothing. He was left scarred for life with a limp. In this
condition he found it very difficult to work, but had no choice as his wife
was now pregnant with their first child and he had little savings. So back
he was on the ship living a life which he now hated. With no skills or
education he was left with little choice.

This is the kind of life shippies on cruise liners lead. Is it any wonder
that many of them commit suicide?

Regards,

Marshall

Let me phrase it in a way that helps some reach into your own minds,
instead of providing direct auxiliary support: proof. Also if you
folks do not have people on ships then why screw around with these
topics, unless it is plain curiosity. Just take care of your families.
Now that would be showing concern, which perhaps is on tap: in
abundance.

Anyway since you guys are bent towards thought, here are some.
NOTE: I am not interested at all in providing proof. As they scream
DEFENSE…DEFENSE when the shot clock is running out in Basketball, go
RESEARCH…stand outside those offices in Mumbai, put an ad in a paper
in Goa; start planning that video.

+ + +
I do not know the reasons, know a thing or do, and will proceed now
with my speculatio (Lat. Reflections of a contemplative)

The work is EXHAUSTING, and has become more and more so. Many are
going two shifts at that pace. Most of you do not know what tat means.
Please do not take offense. The salaries are almost entirely made from
tips so very little option. Some get paid as low as $70 a month, the
rest to be made from tips. There is a lot of abuse now than in years
gone by. In epistemological terms, an epidemic:

Emotionally broken, drinking to stay sane, broken hearts, exhaustion,
heart attacks, liver issues, many are overweight and their legs can
hardly support them — much less their hearts, many of them have
varicose veins and many have got operated. Too many cannot see any
light in their lives, hearing of news that even their fathers are
shagging their wives, brothers too, and others including from other
communities leading to smirking, etc., when they make it to shore. I
regret not being a priest. They really need intense support as well as
learning how to provide for themselves This itself could be a shore
mission much like the Jesuits who go on board ships to minster, in
caritas.

More possibilities with women, has led to all kinds of control issues,
loosing entire earnings, other complexities, pressure brought upon to
bear, blackmail, etc. Our boys are snapping.

In India with our own bastards at the Shipping Offices:
Lets just say that, one person I know and who was much liked by his
(UK) Sup. was allowed to appear and passed the qualification for
Bartender. When the fucker in the office in Mumbai, India (AND I DARE
say a South Indian, its SIndians all the way, and I say it sine there
is something sick). saw the certification, he was incensed saying that
Indians are not allowed to tend the bar. Presumably, that has somewhat
changed now. Goans have to deal with the same shit other Goans dealt
with in the Hotel/ Hospitality industry in Goa, of which so much would
be spoken in villages. Forgotten?!

There are Goan women on ships too. We had one in the family.

I have heard of women demanding, and Goan men gifting $500 watches to
their girlfriends on board. Those of you who have had flings, even
with highly intellectual paramours (I hope so) would know a thing or
two about gifts and such.

I am sure there are are other better and more enlightening reasons.

[Goanet] Religious Persecution in India: Are you sure?

2014-02-16 Thread Marshall Mendonza
Santosh Helekar had forwarded a post of Basilio Monteiro under the above
heading. In response I had posed a few questions to him as under:

I had asked him to answer the foll questions:

1. Would he classify or term the violence in the Dangs in December 1998 as
acts of discrimination? ( Incidentally, the mastermind of the violence
Swami Assemanand is in the docks for masterminding several other violent
attacks all over India and in the latest issue of Caravan, has implicated
the RSS top brass. Refer: http://caravanmagazine.in/ )

2. Would he classify or term the violence in Kandhamal in 2007/08 as acts
of discrimination? ( a documentary Kandhamal Unresolved was screened
recently at the Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF). The film is
available on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPu0r01wDlA*

3. Would he classify or term the violence in Karnataka that soon followed
Kandhamal as acts of discrimination? Report of Justice Michael Saldanha
that inquired into the violence is attached. Refer:
http://www.pucl.org/Topics/Religion-communalism/2011/saldanha_report.pdf

4. How would he classify the various Anti-Conversion Acts passed in some of
the states?

5. How would he classify the ideology of the RSS which targets the muslim
and christian minority, out of which flows most of the violence?

Till date there has been no response. Therefore it could mean that he has
no answers or does not wish to engage in a discussion/ debate on what are
essentially his personal perspectives, not necessarily based on facts.

So far as Santosh Helekar is concerned, as a sympathizer/ apologist of the
sangh parivar, who has in the past justified / defended the rapes, killings
and violence against innocent Christians in Kandhamal, his views are on
expected lines and he is the last person we should take seriously on this
subject in this forum.

Marshall

Re: [Goanet] Religious Persecution in India: Are you sure?

2014-02-16 Thread Santosh Helekar
Regarding what Joe Lobo wrote below, I have glossed over nothing in relation to
the subject matter of this thread. Had this thread been about RSS, Modi, BJP,
etc., and I was asked to comment, I would have told you that these
organizations and the personalities associated with them are Hindu extremists
who should never be allowed to come to power. RSS has been from the outset a
martial Hindu chauvinist organization that has espoused religious fervor and
violence as means to achieve political power. Religious activists belonging to
this organization were responsible for the murder of Mahatma Gandhi, even
though Gandhi himself was somewhat of a Hindu nationalist. Indeed, it is a
credit to the vision of our founding fathers that despite these types of
elements and sentiments that have always existed in India, India is a thriving
free secular pluralist democracy.

Regarding what Josebab wrote below, I wish some independent person would find
out the actual facts relevant to the questions raised by him below. From my
knowledge of this issue, I can provide straight answers to some of the
rhetorical questions, but not all.

1: what, Basilio, would make any 'murder of any Catholic priest or nun ( or a
non religious Catholic person) an act of Religious Persecution? (Basilio
probably did not read my question the first time around)

If priests or nuns were murdered in a premeditated manner by a group of
individuals or the state solely because of their religious beliefs or
affiliation.

2: have such events occurred in India ?

Offhand, I cannot think of any events involving Catholic priests or nuns. I
can think of one evangelical Christian priest and his two sons in 2003. This
is a task for an independent and impartial fact-finder (IIFF).

3: are Catholics in certain parts of India being threatened  / assaulted
 because of their faith?

I don't know this regarding Catholics. But I suspect some new evangelical
converts are threatened by Hindu extremists to reconvert in the tribal areas
and some poverty-stricken communities. Another task for an IIFF.

4: are Catholics in certain parts of India being forcibly re-converted?

I think the answer is no with regard to Catholics. But it is most likely yes
with regard to newly converted evangelical Christians. The reason should be
clear from Basilio's post. It is because no Catholic priest has actively tried
to convert anyone for the last 60 years in India. Another task for an IIFF. It
would also be nice to know some hard facts as to what tactics the
fly-by-night evangelical priests that Basilio mentioned were adopting in
their conversion campaigns. There was a millionaire Keralite pastor in Houston
who was caught in some kind of scam some years ago. He used to charter a large
airplane to fly back and forth for his proselytization missions in South India,
and solicit charitable donations to pay for the cost of the aviation fuel for
his trip from a rich Houstonian.

5: is ONE solitary case or Ten or a Hundred cases too few to get worked up
 about ?

I would think that in order to tar an entire nation as a place where religious
persecution is prevalent there needs to be at least a few cases each month in
different parts of the country.

6: are we saying that the Law in some states preventing voluntary conversion
from Hinduism, constitutional or even moral?

Morality is not an issue in laws banning conversions, as long as the law
applies equally to people of all faiths i.e. people are not allowed to convert
to any faith or lack of faith from any other faith or lack of faith. Indeed,
Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, etc. are, I believe, advocating such a
practice, especially, with regard to minors. But all such laws would be
unconstitutional in India, U.S. or any truly secular pluralist country. Some
IIFF needs to examine the laws that have been passed in India in this regard. I
hear that they have weasel words that keep them free of constitutional
challenge.

Cheers,

Santosh

Is the question on disparity in wages inadvertently or intentionally
rhetorical. Given the same job in almost every situation citizens of
certain countries get paid less, or more, or have other attached
emoluments.

There must be other examples to what I said about the salary being $70
and a bit more, but the caveat is that you are expected to boost it up
by tips. Different companies have their own wage bar/scale and
presumably tell you what to expect, strive for, be nice (whatever that
means). That is seen as your salary. And have no doubt that there are
managers who are Goans. They cannot talk since they do need a job and
will do what it takes. Thy will when they retire, retire hurt, etc.
Such is life. Also no point in my using economic terms which I hardly
have interest in defending.

This is true say in the MEast is it not? And often when we benefit, do
we not hold on to our gains. Is that not true? Do we blab around that
Yo, I am making a killing man!! Wooot! Hell No.

Lets us say if I was teaching at a Univ. in the ME. As an American
citizen I am supposed to be paid more. That is sadly the way it and
sadder if the Amcho Goenkar. and Hanv Bhaircho are equal in skills,
etc.

Upon, or following my interjection (it may have across as somewhat harsh) we get
responses with stirring/ disturbing examples from some of the more
thoughtful individuals on Goanet; and which will now be extremely
beneficial to those who wish to know, and know more of such matters.

Job done. Time to move on when the better ones among us weigh in.

[Goanet] REMO AVOID CONTESTING LOK SABHA POLLS?

REMO NOT TO CONTEST LOK SABHA POLLS

Remo's decision for not contesting Lok Sabha polls is a wise decision
since AAP is still indecisive getting a musician in their fleet. All
sorts of qualified person in different fields including medical
doctors are available in the Lok Sabha except musician and probably if
Remo reaches there the whole parliament will start dancing on the
floor of assembly in the tune of our Pop international star.

What you people see all these days is the dance without a guitar or
flute but if a musician REMO reaches the floor than the chairs and
mikes will have a real musical chair.

?Padrinchem naum uboun naye?
?
During our ?dotorn? time (Catecheses) we learnt..
?Devachem naum ghorjebhair tonddar gheun naye?
(do not swear upon God, unnecessarily)
This could mean ?one may take God?s name only when there
is absolute necessity?
?
But my mother..
?
My mother always said ?Padrinchem naum uboun naye? (even
if they are wrong)
(Do not tarnish image of the priests, come what may)
?
Look, she has very cunningly omitted the word ?Ghorjebhair?
(unnecessarily)
By not saying ?Padrinchem naum ghorjebhair uboun naye?
?
When asked ?what if when there is an absolute truth in
it??
She replied ?God will take care of it..?
?
Well, that was then and was about you and me (Laity) v/s
the priests.

Now, how about the Priests v/s priests?
I mean, Priest tarnishing image of another priest.

Now, why I am telling you all this?
Few days ago, I heard a similar episode around Velsao.
I am also told a nun is also involved along with a priest
and few others.
?
I really don?t know the truth, people seems divided over
this issue.
Defamatory leaflets also distributed in the people homes
it seems.
?
Even if someone is wrong, where is the forgiveness?
Even if they are wrong, who are we to punish them?
Can?t we just leave them to God?s justice or to the law
of the land?
?
Padri Devachea fattlean Dev, not any longer?

We listen to Xermao after Xermao
But Padrimche Xermao Vhoniek nhuim, muntat ti khobor sot

[Goanet] JUDGING THE JUDGES

2014-02-16 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Knocking those doors of the Temples of Justice should have ordinarily been
one's last resort. Unfortunately in Goa it has become the first stop. With
so many faulty government decisions and a state of utter mal administration
the judiciary has to play a very crucial role in delivering justice. To
ensure this, it is imperative that the politicians should have no direct or
indirect role whatsoever in the selection, promotion and posting of Judges.

Judges should judge every case on merit and should never ever be swayed by
the status of the parties to the case or the faces of the advocates
representing the parties. A good judge has to be extremely fair and never
be ever influenced by any factor other than the rule of law. Justice has to
be dispensed with proper application of mind, cautiously yet promptly.

Judges cannot please everyone. Justice can sometimes taste unpleasant but
has to be swallowed like a bitter pill. Justice is one of the few
commodities that should never be bargained for over the counter. Judges
have their own personalities and style of functioning. Like all of us, they
too are bound to err but as long as the real intent is to deliver justice,
no judge can be faulted.

Accepting the position of a judge is a very big challenge. One has to
sacrifice one's personal liberty to a great extent. As justice has to be
meted out even at the grass roots, it is very essential that persons with
sound knowledge of law be selected for this noble job even at the entry
level at the lower Judiciary. The selection of subordinate court judges
has to be very meticulous as persons who cannot construe the law, only do
damage to the justice delivery system. In times when money and muscle power
is solely determining the heights our Politicians can peak, the task
of the Judiciary
becomes all the more pertinent, crucial and vital.

Only persons with good knowledge of law and with a good insight to
interpret and dispense it should take responsibility as Judges. This noble
task may not be monetarily satisfying but it must definitely give one the
mental satisfaction of having done a noble job. The pecuniary benefits of
the judicial officers must be enhanced so that the Judiciary attracts
nothing less than the best and the brightest. Over the years we have
witnessed some extremely good judges. We have also seen some from the other
end of the spectrum and on them less said the better.

Judges should be ready to fearlessly take on the government for its illegal
actions. Judges should be also consistent in the way they dispense justice.
Courts cannot end up being Casinos. The bedrock of our democracy is the
rule of law and an independent judiciary, which is truly independent. A
judiciary that is accountable to the Rule of law.

[Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] 7th Sunday of the Year

2014-02-16 Thread Jude Botelho
17-Feb-2014

Dear friend,

Can we say that as people of faith we are different from people who do not have
faith? Of course our actions and lives should reveal the type of faith we have.
However, when it comes to daily practice we tend to follow the crowd. People
generally like to mix with people of their own kind and avoid those who rub
them the wrong way. The dictum followed is: 'You be nice to me and I'll be nice
to you'. Conversely, if people hurt us we feel we have every right to
retaliate. Novels and movies suggest revenge is the right way to get even.
Jesus asks us to go beyond - love those who hurt us!
That's difficult if not impossible! May his Spirit make us imitate his
lifestyle! Fr. Jude

Sunday Reflections: Seventh Sunday-You therefore must be perfect, as your
heavenly Father is perfect!23rd Feb. 2014

Leviticus 19: 1-2, 17-18;          1Corinthians 3: 16-23;          Matthew 5:
38-48;

In the Book of Leviticus the word used for God is synonymous with 'Perfect'
'Blameless' and 'Holy'. Be Holy as I your God am Holy. In today's first
reading God instructs Moses to tell the people to imitate the holiness of God
and be kind and charitable in their lives because God does not want his people
to exact vengeance or bear a grudge against one another. Holiness not only
extends to our relationship with God but also with our brothers and sisters. To
be holy is to live blameless lives, not bearing revenge and hatred towards
others.

Be Holy for I your God am holy!
Lutz Long was one of the best German athletes and a favourite of Adolf Hitler.
During the long jump trial he broke several Olympic records. The only other
person who could beat him was Jesse Owens. Hitler hated the black athlete and
moved out of the pavilion when Jesse recorded his trial. Jesse was upset with
the treatment of Hitler. He fouled his first trial and failed to qualify in the
second trial. There was only one last chance to redeem himself. At that moment
Jesse felt a tap on his shoulder. It was Lutz Long his competitor. He advised
him to draw a line a few inches short of the take off. Jesse followed the
advice of his opponent. He succeeded and qualified for the event. From that
moment onwards a bond of friendship developed between the two athletes.  Later
on Jesse had to compete with Lutz and won against his advisor. Jesse went on to
win three gold medals. Hitler looked at the black athlete with anger and
contempt but Lutz held his hand and
praised him for his achievement. Lutz, an ordinary athlete not only followed
the law but went beyond the law. He practiced the law of love against his
opponent. - All of us need a transformation! The world needs to change. Only
true charity and forgiveness can bring about this change. That was what Jesus
meant when he prayed, Father forgive them for they do not know what they do.
The speciality of Christian love is not mere forgiveness but love that
transforms enemies.
Elias Dias in 'Divine Stories for Families'

The Sermon on the Mount is both a challenge and a source of inspiration at the
same time. Today's gospel invites us to be always the first movers in
forgiveness, to be generous beyond measure in being reconciled to the one who
has wronged us. We are challenged to go beyond what the law requires of us.
What are we to do with those who seek to impose themselves upon us through some
form of violence? Are we to react and respond in the same way, as common sense
suggests? Jesus proposes three strong examples: offering the other striking to
one who strikes us on one cheek; offering your cloak to one who takes your
coat, and going the extra mile with one who forces you to  go one mile;- which
are apparently renouncing any kind of resistance, but in reality they are
attitudes inviting reflection on the part of those involved in those
situations. As in the entire Sermon on the Mount, the question is to go one
step farther, with a new orientation. Every one,
including the aggressor, must be a temple of God and we must recognize that.
What gives meaning to our response is the motivation which follows: love. The
last prescriptions bring to culmination the teachings of Jesus on love.
Ordinary logic would have us love those who are good to us and keep our
distance from those who dislike us. But Jesus challenges us to love our enemies
and pray for those who mistreat us. This requirement is based on the very
example of God the Father, who considers everyone, the good and the evil, as
his children. Quite simply we are asked to be perfect and merciful like the
Father. Only God can help us to do so daily. He will.

Re: [Goanet] Goan Shippies Deaths

2014-02-16 Thread Jose Colaco
EDeSouza makes a very interesting and valid argument.

For most of us, life is a daily struggle. We have to work hard and face our
daily set of stresses.

Without agreeing or disagreeing with the 'shippies dying in droves bit', I
imagine that long periods of time away from home + possible smoking, loneliness
and drinking would take their toll.

I meet a good number of folks you call shippies, I call seamen. They come to
church on Saturday evenings when the cruise liners dock here. They do not
appear stressed or otherwise troubled. But, they are mainly young lads from
Salcete.

They appear to make a good income (mainly on tips) and almost all of it goes
into savings. What happens to those funds when they reach Goa is another story.

What happens to these (once young) lads when they are no longer working - is
probably the time when 'all appears to crumble'.

A good lesson from all this: Educate the kids so that they can stand up on
their own two feet and do not always look for handouts.

Back to the original point: which droves?
