[Goanet-News] The state of Goa's magazine market: Impressive or depressing? (IPP)
The state of Goa's magazine market: Impressive or depressing? - A former Portuguese colony, busy tourist destination and India's smallest state, Goa has a lively and growing magazine scenario. From a rare, unsustainable magazine or two not very long ago, the region on the west coast of India now has a diversity of niche magazines. However, in spite of the recent growth, questions and concerns continue to be raised. - PHOTO: Different niche magazines published in Goa When Goa's transformation began in the 1960s, from being a sleepy outmigration-prone region to witnessing fast growth, the former colony of Lisbon for 451 years had little happening on the periodical front. Not surprising, for Goa's economy then was sluggish and the region had just emerged after decades of media censorship. Although spells of Portuguese rule were liberal (Goa even had its own members of parliament in the 19th century), for a large part of the 20th century, the strict dictatorship of Antonio Oliveira Salazar imposed censorship in the Portuguese empire, including Goa. Today, magazines have sprouted like mushrooms in a torrential Goan monsoon. Although still a long distance away from competing with the nearby Indian commercial capital of Mumbai, it's already clear that vendors are finding it tough to display all the mastheads on their racks, outlets and display spaces. A visit to Goa's plush new, Rs 36-crore Krishnadas Shama Central Library Complex at Pato Plaza in the state-capital Panjim, shows over a hundred magazines (plus many newspapers too) awaiting readers in its first-floor reading section open to all -- without membership requirements or charge. Of course, many of these magazines are sourced from across the country; readership interest is strong here for material coming in from outside Goa, specially in languages like English and Marathi. Smaller diaspora communities from other states (and even abroad) settled here or visiting as tourists, also bring their reading preferences to Goa. For instance, the magazine *Goa Streets* recently converted between one-quarter to a third of its pages into Russian! Russians are the largest single group of foreign tourists (of whom almost half a million visit Goa each year). But the numbers in Goa are clearly growing. Take a look at the diversity. *Goa Today* is the grand-daddy of all monthly magazines in Goa, and an English language publication that has been around from the 1960s. It was started by ex-editor Lambert Mascarenhas (who, incidentally, completed his 99th birthday last year) and was bought by the mining house of the Salgaocars in the 1980s. Lawyer-artist turned publisher Harshvardhan Bhatkuly says growing up next door to a journalist made him want to be a journalist. In the last four years he has started three magazines -- *Business Goa*, a monthly glossy dedicated to commerce and the entrepreneurial class of Goa, is his flagship. *My Goa*, a general purpose magazine describes itself as Goa's only social magazine embodying the true essence of Goa -- her people, culture, traditions, folklore, politics, celebrations and issues. To complete the trio, Bhatkuly launched a Marathi monthly too. Other players in the general magazine space include *Viva Goa*, a monthly glossy run by Kedar Dhume, whose background in commercial advertising obviously gives the publication a head start, at least in financial terms. *Planet-Goa* is a tourist-focused magazine promising to let you discover (a world of) entertainment, wine, dine, shopping, real estate, adventure and is now in its fourth year of publication. It is published by Gautam Mukerjea, formerly of the Indian Express, whose brother Peter Mukerjea made news nationally in the TV space. Then there are others too. From the village of Parra, near the town of Mapusa in North Goa, comes *Homes Estates*, a property and building trade guide published quarterly, and the monthly *FindAll Goa*, an officially-sponsored Goa tourism guide to events and entertainment in the state of 1.5 million which draws an estimated 2 million tourists each year. *Goenkar* (Konkani for 'The Goan') claims to be Goa’s largest circulated socio-economic, business, lifestyle magazine, and is part of the 1998-launched Hello Group. Till it became an all-color monthly with a cover price of Rs 60 in 2013, it catered to regional intra-Goa urban business markets, with its *Hello* roughly A5-sized free magazines offering advertising and coverage to local businesses of the area. *Evescape* is Goa's first woman's magazine, now in its second volume describes itself as a read for the woman in command of change. [Goanet] Photographingi the King: Visual (and Other) Experiences of the Cobra Kind -- Rahul Alvares
Photographingi the King: Visual (and Other) Experiences of the Cobra Kind By Rahul Alvares rahulalva...@gmail.com The trouble with most camera equipment is that it gets outdated very quickly. Photography equipment is evolving so rapidly these days that many professional photographers simply change their cameras altogether every couple of years (if not sooner!). Newer cameras are lighter, have more pixels, focus faster, have a higher frame rate, and show much less noise with higher ISO settings. Translated this means that if you took a great picture of an animal some years ago it might still not hold a candle to a very average picture taken by Mr. Technology today since he owns the latest gadgetry on the block! The grudging solution: get a new camera and simply reshoot most of your subjects if you want to stay in the game. The first time I ever saw a King Cobra up close was in 1995. It was at the time Rom Whitaker was filming to shoot the movie 'King Cobra' at the Madras Crocodile Bank. Back then I was the geeky kid running around hoping to be useful just so no one would tell me off for getting in their way. At the time I did not even own a camera! Seven years later I got my first chance to handle a King Cobra at the Queen Savobha institute in Thailand. Getting permission to handle one of these giant snakes wasn't easy. King Cobras can pack quite a punch with their venom and it took a fair amount of pestering on my part and a death disclaimer written in my own handwriting before the handlers would even let me get close to the Kings. This time I carried my dad's film camera and despite my frugal knowledge of photography then the pictures I took fortunately came out quite okay. For that time that is! But by 2008 when I purchased my very own Digital SLR camera my satisfactory pictures taken in 2002 had began to look very unsatisfactory. I simply had to get another shot at photographing a King Cobra with my new equipment. Trouble is that King are very rare snakes. Living in thick leech infested rainforests they definitely don't make themselves readily available. Besides even if you do get lucky and find one I can assure you it wouldn't at all be amused to have a camera repeatedly thrust into its face. Getting bitten by a King Cobra isn't an option: they have enough venom to flatten an adult elephant. It also doesn't help that there isn’t any King Cobra anti-venin available in India. With odds like these I had virtually no chance of safely getting a great shot of a wild King Cobra. But then I've always been more lucky than lucky with snakes. One of the advantages of being a snake handler is that you make acquaintances with other snake handlers. One of my acquaintances is Amrut Singh who lives in Bicholim Goa. Amrut, who runs Animal Rescue Squad, is renowed in Goa for rescuing over a dozen King Cobras from human habitations in the last few years. All the King Cobras he rescues are released back into the wild very close to where they were found (so as not to disorient them). It was for one such release of a King Cobra that I was invited. The concerned King Cobra, at nine a half feet in length, was 'not very big' in Amrut's own words! To me it seemed big enough and, judging by the way it charged at Amrut, wild enough too! But Amrut is an utterly fearless snake handler. He handled the snake which was twice his height effectively and relatively effortlessly. I on the other hand wasn't doing very well at all. For starters it was the middle of the day (bad lighting for photography). Then there was the added issue of the constantly moving King Cobra which had the autofocus on my macro lens running bezerk trying to lock onto it. About a hundred and twenty shots later I began to relax a bit. I still hadn't got the perfect shot but I had a feeling that I must have managed atleast some very good pictures. But that's just how wildlife photography works. And when Amrut calls again I will be back in business, perhaps with even better luck next time, and just maybe with a better camera too! Facts about King Cobras * At a record length of eighteen feet eight inches a King Cobra holds the world record for being the longest venomous snake in the world. * King Cobras are also the only snakes in the world to build a nest. A female King Cobra piles dry leaves into a huge mound using only her coils. She lays her eggs inside the mound and then stands guard over them until they hatch. * True to its Latin name Ophiophagus hannah a King Cobra only eats other snakes. They generally feed on ratsnakes but will also eat venomous snakes,

[Goanet] AND NOW A THIRD GENDER
Has the Supreme Court of India created another NOTA by allowing us to say none of the above while opting whether our gender is male or female? Has the Supreme Court travelled way beyond Adam and Eve besides all known religious beliefs? This judgment which has been delivered in the midst of a very hot summer is bound to generate a lot of heat. It is going to be a long drawn debate. We have to only hope for an early monsoon to ensure that frayed tempers may be cooled. We now have a third gender with the Supreme Court also directing that they be considered within the sphere of Other Backward Classes (OBCs). This is highly untenable and very objectionable. Hasn’t the Supreme Court itself earlier laid down that the power to make provision for reservation for the Other Backward Classes was an enabling provision and not a Fundamental Right per se, and only upon the benefit being extended, then it would be a Fundamental Right? Isn’t this power vested within the domain of the Legislature and Government to take such a decision? What was the Supreme Court’s legally tenable basis for arriving to the finding that those from this third gender are OBCs and deserved such special treatment? That a third gender would dawn is something our fore fathers and the founding fathers of the Indian Constitution must have never even dreamt. The Supreme Court is known to review its owns orders. Will the judgment creating this third gender be another to that list? This is going to be an issue that the new government which assumes power at the Centre on May 16th will have on its lap to grapple with and get this judgment *modi-fied.* Aires Rodrigues T1 - B30, Ribandar Retreat Ribandar - Goa - 403006 Mobile: 9822684372
[Goanet] GSRP welcomes SC decision on reservations of jobs for Third Gender
http://www.goasu-raj.org/gen/news/3439.asp GSRP welcomes SC decision on reservations of jobs for Third Gender Goa Su-Raj Party welcomes the decision of the Supreme Court of india that gives recognition to transgenders as the third gender, directs government to provide reservation in jobs and education. Speaking of the path-breaking decision of the Apex Court, Savio Rodrigues, Secretary President (Youth Affairs), said, GSRP is the only party in India to have included the third-gender issues in our Lok Sabha 2014 manifesto. One of our key focused areas was to ensure that there be reservations for the third-gender in jobs and education. It is indeed heartening to note that even the SC agrees to our stand and has passed an order in favor of protecting the rights of the third-gender to be able to earn a living and educate themselves just like any other citizen in the country, Rodrigues further added. The Election Commission of India in the on-going Lok Sabha election had included the option of others (referring to the third-gender to vote. The SC decision will assist organization such a GSRP which believes that every citizen of this country has a legitimate right to be treated as a citizen and must not be discriminated against on basis of their sexuality or sexual preferences. We would put up a requisition to the Goa government to also create reservations in jobs and education for the third-gender in light of the Apex Court\'s decision, Rodrigues asserted. [Goanet] Special Marriage Act 1954 backdoor entrance
This seems to be a backdoor entrance for non-Goan women for Goan jobs. Seems like an opening to the well known sham of “Marriages of convenience”. Can we hear some intellectual feedbacks? Here is a detailed review on the subject: http://www.epaperoheraldo.in/Details.aspx?id=15158boxid=3304828uid=dat=4/13/2014 On January 17 this year, the Manohar Parrikar government issued an extraordinary gazette notification that went largely unnoticed, because the law it intends to enforce was not discussed in government, in the State Assembly or in any public for a. The notification seeks to apply the Special Marriage Act 1954 to Goa which is already governed by the Uniform Civil Code. Legal experts have slammed the move as irrational, uncalled for and maleficent…. Dr. Ferdinando dos Reis Falcão.

Re: [Goanet] Agenda Setting: The Evils of Mining Were Buried by the Media
The media is commercial and knows where its bread and butter lies! The headlines are atrocious and although the truth is mentioned in the write ups below and so we cannot report them for action to the Press Council/ take them to court etc to haul them up for false reporting. People only read headlines in today's busy world. They also censor letter to the editor and only print those in line with their stand etc.The powerful electronic media builds up false news sometimes by repetition, or asking wrong leading questions for expected answers and so on . We have to shift through the chaff and this is becoming more and more difficult! On Mon, Apr 14, 2014 at 7:50 PM, augusto pinto pinto...@gmail.com wrote: The media coverage of the Goa elections ensured that the ill-effects of mining which are many, starting with the destruction of our water sources, was completely ignored by the media commentators, interviewers and the election candidates too. Even when some candidates did make a point that there were other stakeholders in the mining controversy who were being affected it was either drowned out or I suspect edited out. I can understand the mining and media barons who want to project this line but I would have thought that the journalists and at least some of the candidates who are also Goans would have understood the danger of what they were doing. [Goanet] Charles Sobhraj and Chicken Cafreal
Regarding Vivek Menezes' BBC article transcribed on Goanet Reader, describing Charles Sobhraj the famous international drug smuggler as a regular at O Coqueiro, he Sobhraj, may have come for the late Gines Viegas' fare, but he is more likely to have been there for the easy international calls that place facilitated. Those were early days of telephone service in Goa and overseas calls had to be booked through a post and telegraphs operator in Panjim. Calls would normally come through after several hours. Viegas, clever businessman that he was, in collusion with a connecting operator arranged for his patrons to get their calls instantaneously, for a fee of course. This was quite a big reason for the restaurant's success. Every Gulfie, Africander, hippie, politician or other notable, could be found there. Not to detract from the reputation of the food itself, but my own dining experience at Coqieiro was middling, not exceptional like were a couple of restaurants in Goa of that day. Mandovi's was a timeless classic, Tito's was up and coming and Gordon's (or was it George's) pork chops in central Panjim were indeed more menu-enticing. I went to O Coqueiro once and ordered wild boar for which he was famous then. It was so heavily spiced (I didn't mind that) but tasteless, that it could have been beef or rabbit I was eating, for all I knew. No gamy taste at all. After that once, I had no special menu item incentive to go there again. Sometimes popularity and the ensuing success has little to do with the main line or purpose of that business. In Coqueiro's case it was due to Porvorim just developing as a satellite of Panjim and therefore easy accessibility, Viegas' business nose and friendliness, the variety of liquors and of course the international phone calls. He was from Assagao. Roland. Sent from Samsung Mobile
[Goanet] Press Release: CII on WPI inflation statement
Dear Esteemed Members of the Media, Kindly find appended below the press release on the Statement of Mr Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, CII on Revival of Inflation. His photo has been placed as an attachment for your ready reference. May I request you to kindly carry the same in your esteemed Media With warm regards, Geetika Geetika Goyal State Head-Goa Confederation of Indian Industry 502, Unitech City Center, M. G. The Rupee has also strengthened, which has prompted the government to start reducing retail prices of petrol. Therefore, this rise in WPI inflation has to be attributed to supply side constraints in the agricultural side. Food inflation is on account of a rise in price of potato, fruits and vegetables, onions and milk and eggs. The revival of inflation, especially of food prices, calls for supply side initiatives to raise agriculture productivity, including augmenting investment in agri infrastructure and improving supply side management, delisting perishables from APMC, encouraging FDI in retail which would boost agriculture production, etc. While CII has been raising these points for some time, we are yet to see significant actions on this front. Knowing how deep the impact of inflation goes in slowing down the economy, CII would urge that policy actions are swift and decisive on this front. It would be unfortunate if the RBI decides to address supply side created inflation through demand constriction by using interest rate as a tool.
