Born in the 7th century in Ireland to the pagan king of Oriel and a devout mother remarkable for her piety and beauty. This forgotten saint on account of her spotless virtue and glorious martyrdom is also known as the ‘Lily of Fire’.Dympna being filled with the fervor and love for Jesus Christ chose him for her Divine spouse and was consecrated to a vow of chastity An unexpected cloud overshadowed Dimpna’s happiness with her mother’s death at the age of 14 and her father too greatly mourned the death as well and continued to prostrate with grief till at length he was persuaded by his counselors to seek solace in a 2nd marriage so he commissioned from his court to seek him a lady in beauty and character like his earlier spouse , after visiting many countries in vain the messengers returned back stating that there was none so charming and amiable as his own lovely daughter giving ear to their suggestion Damon dympna’s father conceived an evil design of marrying her . With persuasive words he manifested his purpose to her and Dympna was horrified by this suggestion and asked for a period of 40 days to consider the proposal . She immediately on the advise of Fr. Gerberan fled to Antwerp and then to the village of Gheel . Her father on hearing this set out in search of her and persuaded her to return back but Fr.Gerberan rebuked him for his wicked intentions, whereby he gave orders to Fr.Gereberan to be put to death ,Dympna’s father inducement to return with him proved futile ans she spurned his enticing promises , infuriated by her resistance Damon drew a dagger and struck the head of his own child ,recommending her soul to the mercy of God ,she fell prostrate at the feet of her insanely raving father and the crown of martyrdom came to her at the age of 15 and on the 15th of May between 620 to 640 .her feast day. This saint is depicted in various forms such as being beheaded by the king, kneeling at mass ehile her father murders the priest Gerebernus ,lamp, praying in a cloud surrounded by a group of lunatics bound with golden chains, princess with a sword holding the devil on a leash, young woman with Saint Gerebernus . Dimpna is a patron saint for sleepwalking, epilepsy, insanity, mental illnesses and disorders, insanity, epilepsy,Incest victims, possessed, mental health givers and professionals, princesses, psychiatrists, rape victims, runaway brides, sleepwalkers, therapists, nervous and neurological disorders, mental hospitals and asylums., The feast day is celebrated on May 15 th and on this day the image is kept open to the people to pay their obeisance or for those who wish to have a glimpse of this forgotten saint at the ancestral house of Lida Joao at ;Casa de Almeida’s at Bainfol Assolna , Salcete .Every year there is a service wherein the relic is kissed by the faithful irrespective of their religious backgrounds and the devotees are anointed with the holy oil.At the end of the ceremony always proceeds the traditional meal to commemorate the feast of this unfamiliar saint .It is attended by hundreds of faithfuls. The nine days novena constitutes 9 different intentions starting from faith, hope, charity, piety, prudence, justice, fortitude, temperance, and lastly chastity. There lies the church in Gheel inhonour of St.Dymphna at the site of the original tombs which were white as snow one of Fr.Gereberanus and when the coffin of the saint was opened there was found lying on her chest a red tile with the inscription ‘Here lies the holy virgin and Martyr Dymhna’.Here miracles and cures continually occur in increasing numbers. In Gheel the insane are treated in a peculiar manner, wherebythey are placed in an institution for observation and thereafter sheltered in the homes of the inhabitants there , and are allowed to lead a normal life ,by taking part in agricultural activities etc. and are being watched without being conscious of it,and are also treated very kindly wherein the treatment proves effective. The old church in Gheel was destroyed by fire in 1489 and the new church was built in 1532 which stands till date. . There also exists a church in America at Masilon Ohio the first in honour of this saint, there

Nunes Wed, 09 Apr 2014 06:35:04 -0700 12th century Kadamba Jayakesi I, Velliapura site in present day Velim, South Goa . There is lot of information translated by Kannada language experts from ancient stone inscriptions on Velliapura of which they themselves don’t know the whereabouts of this place, as this place being under Portuguese for 451 years is almost foreign to them. Very little information about Velliapura is written by world renowned Historian George M. Moraes in Kadamba Kula, the history of Ancient and Medieval Karnataka as he never came across the 'coterie'. This place is very well known to small number of members of the Coterie who come across the ghats to Velliapura Jayakesi site present day Velim every year as pilgrim and link Roque Santana ancestors as the descendant of Hangal section of this ancient family so as a search for this link as to why this pilgrims who come to pay homage to this ancient place call themselves as 'Pilgrims'? and If this site belongs to Jayakesi of Goa, why the family living in it is linked to the descendants of Hangal?. As gathered from the available resource that the Kadamba sovereigns were hailed as 'Kadambarasa' meaning supreme or Gods or Godly or sovereign therefore the members of this coterie call themselves as pilgrims. The inscription stones in kannada found at Velim site tell that descendant of Jayakesi of Goa, Suriya-Deva'1345CE slain-ed sovereign of Chandrapura ' his wife 'Vinomaih-devi' was the daughter of 'Kadambarasa of Hangal', Purandara-Deva, died and was cremated in Velliapura by her nephew Jayesha, grandson of Purandara of Hangal. According to Haliyal stone inscription this same Jayesha founded a small timber business in Haliyal, over the centuries family owned and operated this business which was only source of income for them and their workers by hereditary who call themselves as coterie, was confiscated by the British Governor George Harris in 1840's and most of this pilgrims are the descendants of those workers . According to their resource after the 1345 massacre the surviving Queen 'Vinomaih devi' moved away from the furious Mohammedans in Chandrapura present day Chandor and was taken into hiding in this royal compound by the foothills of Velliapura by the kingdoms blacksmiths, her father and brother joined her sometime thereafter. After their death the descendants were converted to Nazrani Christianity for fear of Muslims from there on they are in possession and actually still lives here on this historical site. therefore they hold that the family living in Velliapura site are the descendants of Purandarai of Hangal. Jayakesi I son of Shashtha-Deva was a very powerful ruler, 12 century copper carvings tell us that princes and lords from neighbouring kingdoms traveled in to Chandrapur present day Chandor to pay homage to Jayakesi who was the Sovereign of Konkan. Velliapura viragal tell that Jayakesi I himself in a battle with his rival to retain this place Velliapura won a decisive victory, which was his southern capital, three horses stables and few officials residences were destroyed in the battle according to the Kannada version the days following the victory the wives of the commanding officers or soldiers celebrated in the royal compound by lighting and floating ‘ponti’ in the royal pond ‘Toloai’ in front of the capital building. According to Portuguese record of 1922, a complaint was filed with the Portuguese ‘Regdor’ by the ancestors of Roque Santana following the excavation of that toloai. The Coterie has always objects to the family members contesting direct elections in present day Democratic setup saying it is of the people, by the people and for the people and this family is not, In1962 they objected to Roque Santan contesting the first ever election in Goa, earlier they hailed his 'Satyagraha' to bring Democracy to the people of Goa. I first visited 12th century Kadamba Jayakesi I, Velliapura, site in Sept of 2006, the compound gates were secured when I inquired with the neighbours they directed me to a man

[Goanet] Trashy talk
when I see trashy talk on Goanet, I ignore it, assuming that it comes from someone under the influence of the spirits (the liquid kind I mean). Some of my less controversial posts have presumably been censored out, but big brother must have asleep at the wheel on this one.
[Goanet] A breezy day in Goa
This afternoon I was lounging on my recliner on the rear porch of my residence, here in Goa overlooking an untilled private rice field, which is ringed by verdant hills. A brisk breeze was blowing; my coconut palm trees were swaying in the breeze and birds of every hue and sound were flitting about and serenading me. What a joy to be in Goa in mid-May. This is the Goa I love !

One with the continuous refrain: I have done nothing wrong, why am I being subjected to this should introspect, surely more than one person can not be wrong. Then there are some who can now come and pontificate, but couldn't afford a few pounds, so had to unsubscribe from membership to the G.O.A. (U.K.) Ltd. Now have the audacity to be pompous, take the holier than thous stance. So called supporters of the Goa cause. Then there are some wielding, power, I own the site, I can do what I want. [Goanet] Selma Carvalho's book some unsavoury comments - (Response by Rose Fernandes)
Dear goanet readers Santosh Helekar is the person who deserves high praise, if he says Selma's book is well-researched and well written, one has to presume that he has read it from cover to cover including all research documents, if I may be so bold to ask him did he attend speed reading classes? Please could he kindly share with us his secret of success? Most of us only received The Book at the event that Launched 100 copies just over a week ago. So far I have enjoyed stories of a merry band of Goykars, equivalent to the Oom-Pah-Pah band, who played in Zanzibar and Casablanca style bars (Casablanca as in film not place, where one saw a bar filled with smoke wafting to the ceiling and had that classic line here's looking at you, kid). Just got to the exciting part where one of our fellow Goykar's took out his gun and shot a charging lioness only to become distracted by postings from fellow Goykars on goanet doing just that, taking out blazing guns, this time to save a lioness. There is no point in me asking for advice on speed reading from Melvyn, he's just got one line in his head Goans don't tell the right story. Have now come up with a novel way to gain more reading time - ting meals (Ting is short for microwave). Managed to bag the last one from Marks and Spencer supermarket under their Modern Indian Range NEW (in bold) Goan Chicken. Melvyn's eyes lit up, he thought I cooked him Chicken Cafreal, the instructions on the packet say microwave for 2 minutes not tell your husband so I didn't. Normally at book launches there is plenty of champagne but all our Goykar men appear to have drowned down barrels of 92 per cent proof contrabrands and taken goanet to new dizzy heights. For the moment, at least until most of us have read The Book, let us celebrate and be glad and grateful that with the help of a grant my best friend, Selma bhai, through creative thinking and writing, has penned pictures of our lives in East Africa without living there. After we have read The Book those of us who have lived in East Africa may have comments to make. As has been predicated in the future our community are in danger of falling into a big drainhole and coming out the other side beige. At least our children's children, children, children 200 years from now will know from The Book that there were once Goykars that roamed East Africa and they were originally brown. [Goanet] alcohol, alcohol everywhere in Goa
Alcohol ,alcohol everywhere in Goa When the parivartan Govt. took the reins, it clearly stated that no more bar licences would be issued. In fact the number of bars for person in Goa is alarmingly high. If revenue is all that matters, then the popular resentment of protest must be heard .Leave aside outsiders who drink like fish and proudly display the bottles on a holiday ,coming as they are from parched states .Goans are slowly falling to the evils of alcohol addiction, with rampant proliferation of bars .It is the way the Govt. wants us to drown our sorrows. In some places in Goa bars with shutters down are doing early morning business with impunity, when no bars should be opened before 10 a.m.The exercise department knowingly turns a blind eye in the heart of cities, where the addicted labourers want the brew. The bars that are open till 1 a.m pay Rs 50,000= and those that are open till 4 .a.m. shell out Rs 2 lakhs. Is there a restriction on the sale of hard liquor at this unearthly hours?, Giving in to liquor barons and some influential tourists is outrageous .Night life could easily be continued in Hotels and which would have met the needs .The deadly law and order problems arising out of drunken brawls, even though they may be few should be a concern of revenue hungry Govt, Earlier the mischief to tax serving of liquor at parties and private ceremonies was hastily withdrawn . Alcoholism is fast catching up as the common disease among the Goans and having debilitating effects on family economics The free serving of alcohol at social gatherings is an invitation for drinking GOA is designated as the beer capital of India..Night life anywhere in the world is not hinged on bars and liquor flowing easily, but on entertainment, shows and displays .Open air night parties are exclusive in Goa. The protest of women on late closing of bars should not be brushed aside, because the consequences are too serious to be ignored., The revenue of Rs 86 Lakhs and not growing due to these relaxed timings is not in the best away to augment Govt. depleting coffers of the state to meet mindless freebies and doles, Besides those serving in these outlets will also face certain problems. Goa is also becoming a thorn in the flesh to the other neighbouring states for smuggling large quantities of cheap and freely available spirits. Govt. nets in revenue also by issuing permits for carrying 2 litres of alcohol outside the states. Fortunately the spurious sale of liquor in the State is generally unheard of The lax policy of the Govt. has led to the proliferation of drugs, though the Govt and the agencies are loath to admit the same officially. Prostitution overtly and covertly is flourishing in many places under the garb of massage parlours. Goa as the tourist’s destinations known to outsiders is synonymous with drugs, liquor and prostitution, pedophilia. Govt must necessarily guard rigorously against the common evils associated with tourism promotion .Only this Parivartan Govt. is encouraging dependence on alcohol, whereas the past Govt. thus far limited to enhancing the price with the aim to reduce consumption It is hoped that prohibition state of BJP Gujerat will learn from the Goa model of alcohol revenue generating policy of BJP ruled state Nelson Lopes Chinchinim. [Goanet] Herd mentality - origins?
Dear readers A link below for you to enjoy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHRAgkd9cR0 Many, many years ago when our ancestors were exported from Goa to seek their fortunes in Africa, it would not have been unusual to hear the sounds of their parents and families wailing at their farewell in our language Baba, Baba or Bhai, Bhai. The Europeans will have cottoned on this Baba, Baba bleating on giving them employment. The revenue collectors in the districts and customs will have filled bags of goodies and money destined for Europe hence the saying Yes Sir, Yes Sir, Three Bags Full. Those who were Uxara (smart) will have filled up four bags on the backs of his colleagues and gone Yes Sir, Yes Sir, I have Four Bags Full Sir. This meant promotion and a journey into the wilderness only to have their pride dented with diseases like malaria shortening their journey back to their maker and had to be brought back for the attention of the pedos (goan welfare funeral arrangers). Our administrative coolies who doubled up as peons became very valuable and expendable as the European advanced in Africa. Peon thinking continues to this day at whatever status or pay grade level. I have witnessed this in the 1970s as a teenager dealing with our many Goan organisations in London, England. It was my belief that it should be an honour to serve our community only to find at meetings in frustration I had to stand up and ask people around me what did they do in their actual jobs as looking back a lot of valuable time was wasted by peon thinking. The people I am talking about were probably excellent Goan administrators who while at work were given peon jobs and their only outlet was to serve on committees, serving our people. This attitude continues to this day hence herd mentality. Our young people in an internet cafe would hardly know the difference between a barista and a barrister. Re: [Goanet] Selma Carvalho's book some unsavoury comments - (Response by Rose Fernandes)
I am not sure what this cross examination is about, but let me tell you why I said Selma's book was well researched and well written. First, I received the book from Selma almost 2 weeks ago. She has signed the copy on April 22, 2014. So if I had the time to read the book completely, I could have read it from cover to cover in 2 weeks, even though I am a slow reader. But I only read a couple of chapters and browsed through the whole book, enough to know that I like the writing style and the flow, and the way Selma has compiled and organized all the interviews in chapters with well-chosen headings. These observations led me to conclude that the book is well-written. Now as far as it being well-researched is concerned, I know a little bit about what a well-researched book is because I have been a researcher for the last three decades. I could tell that Selma's book is well researched because it is heavily referenced with 530 end notes, most of which are citations of high quality sources, including reports and letters in local newspapers from East Africa during the period in question. Finally (actually the first thing I noticed), I noticed that the book was edited and reviewed by an authority on East African British colonial history, Christine Nicholls, whose blurb on the cover is pretty much exactly what my impression was: This fascinating, well-researched book makes the reader turn every page with interest, anxious to find out what happens to this talented community. .C.
