[Goanet] Gomes Named Tanzania Golf Team Captain

2014-08-21 Thread Mervyn Lobo
By Mbonile Burton
Aug. 21, 2014 (All Africa Global Media) -- ARUSHA Gymkhana
Club (AGC) outstanding golfer Richard Gomes will captain the
national team for the 16th edition of East Africa Golf Challenge
tournament scheduled for August 27-31 at the par-71 Entebbe Golf
Club in Uganda.

The team enters residential training camp in Arusha today
ready for the prestigious annual tournament. National team coach
Olais Mollel told the 'Daily News' from Arusha yesterday that
all is set for the camp.

"The Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) has set up camp in Arusha
which will resume tomorrow and all preparations are in top
gear," he said.

Mollel confirmed to this paper that Gomes will be new team
captain, taking over from Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club (DGC)
youngster Victor Joseph, who led the team to third place in
Nairobi, Kenya last year.

However, Joseph is among eight players in the national team
representing the country at the event which brings together
regional top players. Other players in the squad are Nuru
Mollel, Abbas Adam, John Saidi, John Leonce, George Sembi and
Julius Francis.

Gomes is in tremendous form this year and he has so far
collected six trophies at his club. Mollel said Gomes, Francis
and Leonce missed last year's event but are now in the team
going to Uganda.

Folks,
Richard started of as a (good) hockey player for the Dar Institute. I guess he
was able to transfer some of those skills to the links.

[Goanet] Mayem Custodian Issue: Act abolishing land titles notified

PANJIM: In a major victory to Mayem villagers, who were fighting for
land, on which their homes stood, since Liberation, the government on
Wednesday notified the Goa ( Abolition of Proprietorships, Titles and
Grants of Lands) Act, 2014 following assent being given by Governor Om
Prakash Kohli.

Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar informed the Goa Assembly that
government has notified the Act and the same has been sent to printing
and stationary department for printing in the gazette. He said that
the Goa Governor on August 15 gave its assent to the bill, which was
sent back to government by former Governor B V Wanchoo.

“ On August 15, Governor gave freedom to people of Mayem,” Parrikar
said assuring that within next one year all the issues would be
settled.

Government had introduced the Goa ( Abolition of proprietorships,
titles and grants of lands) bill, 2014, in the Goa assembly, on March
5, 2014, for abolishing the rights of landlords over the evacuee
properties that were acquired from the Portuguese government.

Wanchoo had in July returned the bill stating that it was drafted in a
“ hurry” and sounded “ cut and paste” job with certain sections taken
from similar laws pertaining to other parts of the country.

The bill seeks to allow compensation to persons whose property rights
will be abolished but are not regranted to them.

But, exact compensation payable therefore cannot be quantified at this
stage, the bill mentioned. Importantly, the bill states that all such
lands which are presently vested in the custodian of evacuee property,
as ' evacuee property' under the Goa, Daman and Diu Administration of
Evacuee Property Act, 1964, including properties and lands in Mayem,
Bicholim, Cuncolim, Siolim or in any part of Goa shall stand
transferred to and vest in the government of Goa, free from all
encumbrances, mortgage, debt, or charge of any kind.

The Act transfers to and vests in the Government of Goa all lands
previously vested in the custodian of evacuee properties MAYEM LAND

[Goanet] Outlook Article: Stop the Undermining of Reservations in Goa University: An Open Letter

It has been 4 days since the posting of the Open Letter which I among many
others had signed, on how discrimination is practiced at Goa University and
the response to this article on Goanet has been overwhelming:

Silence! Deafening silence!!
No denial! No contest! Nothing!!!
Just silence! Deafening silence!!

Why are all the 'stalwarts' of Goanet so silent of this subject?

Does anyone realize what it means when 90 % of Goa University's faculty are
drawn from what is the top 10% of its population. (By Goa's population I
refer to those Goans who stay here now irrespective of when or where they
migrated here)

Why is it that Goaneters who are alleged to be so interested about matters
in Goa so silent about the rights of clearly over the 70% of Goans?

Does caste and class become an issue for these alleged lovers of Goa only
when perpetuating the wars of privileges between rich Bamon and rich Chardo
and rich Saraswat and rich Migrant who form the base of Goanet? Otherwise
is it that all these people close ranks and cover each others backs and
pretend they don't know who are the underprivileged of Goa.

BTW just in case someone wants to know who are the backward classes of Goa,

[Goanet] Fwd: The Jesuits in Korea: Influence without Presence

2014-08-21 Thread Luis Vas
The Jesuits in Korea: Influence without Presence *Franklin D. Rausch *

Studies on the Society of Jesus in East Asia tend to focus on China
and Japan. There is good reason for this—the Jesuits were not present and
active in significant numbers in Korea until after the Korean War
(1950–1953). However, this article will show that despite not being
physically present in Korea, Jesuits had a significant influence in Korea
through their "apostleship of the pen." Korean scholars were exposed to
European culture, science, and technology through Jesuit texts written in
Classical Chinese, the reading language of Korea's educated elite.
Moreover, Jesuit-authored books introduced Catholicism to one group of
Korean scholars, one of whom went to China to receive baptism. He then
returned home and began baptizing others, leading to the establishment of a
Catholic community on the Korean peninsula *before* missionary work began
there. While the Catholic missionaries who did travel to Korea in the early
nineteenth century were not Jesuits, books by members of that order would
continue to be read and copied by Koreans, helping to sustain the infant
church during the many persecutions it suffered. Even once the period of
persecution was over, the image of the still-absent Jesuits shaped how
Protestant missionaries understood the history of Christianity in Korea and
spurred on their own efforts. Today, a province of the Society of Jesus has
been established on the peninsula with Jesuits focusing on educational and
social work.

*Apostolate of the Pen*

The Jesuits first came to East Asia in the middle of the sixteenth century
when they accompanied Portuguese traders to Japan. They conducted
missionary work in that country and converted a large number of samurai.
Many of those Catholic samurai took part in the 1592 invasion of Korea
launched by Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536–1598), the general who had united much
of Japan after two centuries of civil war.1

While
some Jesuits did come to Korea in the wake of the invasion, they focused on
seeing to the pastoral needs of Japanese Christians, not on evangelizing
Koreans.2

However,
as the invasion wound down and Hideyoshi was forced to withdraw, Jesuits
and their Japanese coworkers did conduct mission work among Koreans who
were taken hostage back to Japan. These Koreans established a thriving
Catholic congregation in 1610 when they built and dedicated a parish to St.
Lawrence. Koreans, like their Japanese co-religionalists, would suffer
martyrdom in the violent suppressions of the seventeenth century. 9 of the
205 martyr saints of Japan are ethnic Koreans, and of those 9, two were
Jesuit brothers.3

While there was an attempt to prepare some Korean Catholics to return
to their homes and carry out mission work there, the suppression of
Catholicism in Japan put an end to such ambitions. This meant that it would
be from China that the Korean Catholic community would trace its roots. The
first efforts of Chinese Christians to gain a foothold in Korea were
initiated by Paul Hsu Guangqi (1562–1633), Matteo Ricci's (1552–1610)
famous convert and a high government official. Facing growing threats from
the Manchus in the north, the Chinese Ming Dynasty (1368–1644) sought aid
from Chosŏn Korea. Paul requested to be sent to Korea in order to help
negotiate this alliance and, while there he hoped to spread Catholicism.
His plans came to naught as a different, non-Catholic official was chosen
in his stead.

Another attempt to introduce Catholicism to Korea came later, after
the Manchu-controlled Qing Dynasty of China overcame Korean resistance to
its imperial aspirations in 1636 following two invasions. As part of a long
standing tradition, King Injo (r. 1623–1649) sent two of his sons to China
as hostages. One of these, Crown Prince Sohyŏn (1612–1645) took an interest
in Western science, and befriended the Jesuit Father Adam Schall
(1592–1666). When he was finally allowed to return to Korea he brought with
him books on both Western science and Catholicism. Schall wanted the Prince
to bring Catholic religious paintings but Sohyŏn declined to accept them,
saying that they might not receive the respect they deserved, perhaps
because they appeared too Buddhist, and therefore were something that the
staunchly Neo-Confucian Chosŏn state would have looked askance at. The
prince invited Schall to come along with him, but the missionary declined,
stating he did not have the time to travel to Korea. Instead, he sent
several Catholic eunuchs and court ladies. However, Sohyŏn would die of
illness only two months after returning from China and all but one of the
Catholic party was to be sent back to China, effectively ending any
Catholic influence for the time b

[Goanet] Fwd: “An early modern Portuguese recipe book of pharmaceutical “secrets””

2014-08-21 Thread Luis Vas
The *Collection of various recipes of unique secrets from the most
important pharmacies of our Society in Portugal, India, Macao, and Brazil,
1766, *also known as *Opp. NN. 17* is a Jesuit manuscript of medical
recipes today housed in the Archivum Romanus Societatis Iesu
(ARSI), the central Jesuit archive in Rome.
Of interest to scholars of the Society of Jesus and to historians of
colonial medicine alike, the 603-page compilation of recipes offers
scholars a glimpse into the process of gathering medicinal knowledge
from local healers in missionary settings, and then disseminating it via a
systematized volume of indexed recipes for the Jesuit’s Portuguese-speaking
unit. Among the highlights of the collection are its various recipes for
compounding *theriacs*, medicaments against snake-bites and other poisons.

Though dated to 1766, the volume probably collates recipes collected over
the previous two centuries within the “Portuguese Assistancy,” the
oldest of the four territorial and linguistic administrative units of the
Jesuit Order, and its most powerful in the early modern period due to
strong patronage by the Portuguese Crown. In principle, the Society of
Jesus was organized as a centralized command structure in which all data
flowed to and from Rome. In practice, however, information and
objects from the Portuguese missions in Brazil, India, Macao (including
letters detailing local life, medicinal recipes, natural historical
knowledge, maps, and indigenous art) circulated semi-autonomously units,
often bypassing the hub of Rome.[1]
 These internal,
Portuguese-language based networks thus offer scholars fascinating insight
into how locally-specific medical knowledge moved into wider, global
circuits of the early modern world, and how the Jesuit Order’s Portuguese
Assistancy acted as a surrogate to the Portuguese Empire.

I am at work on a translation and critical edition of *Opp. NN. 17*, which
will be published with an Introduction, and three accompanying contextual
essays by historians of medicine of early modern India, Brazil, and Macao.
The aim is to make available to historians of the early modern period not
just the particular recipes, but also an exemplary case study of how
botanical ingredients entered the market, and how technical and
experimental knowledge shaped medical practice within the ambit of the
Portuguese Assistancy. Of particular interest to me personally is the
discussion within the manuscript about profit-making, which reminds us
that *materia
medica* and pharmacies were very much seen as money-making concerns for the
Jesuit order. These issues show up in suggestions about omitting
particularly effective but very costly ingredients from recipes and the
necessity for protecting pharmaceutical secrets so as to maximize the
revenue stream. The more things change, the more they stay the same!

In these blog postings I hope to provide some musings on both the process
of creating a translation and critical edition, and on the Jesuit process
of “building” a Portuguese-language recipe book of secrets.

10 Life Changing Tips Inspired By B.K.S. Iyengar
BY ROBERT PIPER

Here are ten of my favorite life changing tips, inspired by quotes
from the legendary yogi, B.K.S. Iyengar:

1. Breathe as if you're divine

"When you inhale, you are taking the strength from God. When you
exhale, it represents the service you are giving to the world."

2. Go inward

"The rhythm of the body, the melody of the mind, and the harmony of
the soul create the symphony of life."

3. Connect to something greater then yourself

"The supreme adventure in a man’s life is his journey back to his

BKS Iyengar: Body and soul

The yoga guru most followed in the world, turns 95.

We look at how Iyengar Yoga evolved as a brand, in a non-brand way

Sanjukta Sharma

With arms around the shoulders of his granddaughter Abhijata, B.K.S.
(Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja) Iyengar walks up a flight of stairs
in small, brisk steps, not for a moment resting both feet on one
stair. Pune has a semblance of winter, and the yoga guru, in a flimsy
kurta and veshti, proceeds to survey a “medical class” in the
cavernous first-floor practice hall at his home and establishment, the
Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (Rimyi).

His famous style of prodding and admonishing students is as sharp as
ever. In crisp Marathi, he pulls up a teacher who does not place the
correctly-measured prop under a student’s back. He intermittently
smacks the backs of those who appear sluggish. A good-humoured man
outside of class, here he is similar to what, he has himself said, his
own guru (and brother-in-law Sri Krishnamacharya) was like. The frail
and sickly teenager Iyengar was knocked cold by the guru if he could
not master an asana. Iyengar turns 95 today. A class in progress at
the institute in Pune. Photographs courtesy Namas Bhojani for SC

This is, by no means, a professionally-run yoga studio, the kind
ubiquitous in most cities around the world today. This is a
therapeutic class, meant for people of all ages, suffering from
ailments such as cervical spondylitis, osteoporosis, post-stroke
trauma and clinical depression. The guru moves from case to case,
adding and removing props, pulling and aligning limbs, avoiding the
crescent-shaped pulpit as much as possible. Abhijata, in her 20s, and
daughter of Geeta, Iyengar’s daughter, who teaches and manages the
institute along with her brother Prashant, is an apparent heir. She
says she spends most of her days with the guru, learning from him, as
her mother and uncle did—not by being a shishya (student) or through a
structured syllabus, but by being around him, imitating him. As a
revered exponent of this ancient discipline, or as a “sadhak”, as he
calls himself, the nonagenarian is unmatched in his pursuit. Every
morning, he practises for 2-3 hours, trying to perfect the stretches
he has devised, combining and cementing the eight-fold path to
enlightenment in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra.

He can still do the sirsasana, or head stand, for half an hour at a
go.At 80, the guru suffered a heart attack, but he bounced back to
health soon. His diet is basic Tamil vegetarian, with curd, rice,
sambhar and cooked vegetables. This is the longest a yoga guru has
sustained his or her practice to perfect more and more. Pattabhi Jois,

The embarrassed guy PASKU returned the umbrella and apologized, before getting

In the evening PASKU picked up all his umbrellas repaired, put them under his

I did read Asian Voice where Mohan has written. Obviously, he was given the
details by someone in the organizing committee. Maybe, Bishop Neri was
supposed to come but couldn't.
I saw the video and saw Fr. Lucas, who is a distrant relative of mine. It's
been years I haven't seen him in person. He replaced his cousin, Fr. Joseph
Rodrigues who moved to Canada and is now parish priest at St,. Anthony's
Church, in Brampton. There are lot of Goans belonging to this parish.
Fr. Lucas is active in the thiatr field, but I haven't seen any. I wanted
to buy one CD from his bother's shop but he had none.
I also saw the video. As before, the video is unprofessionally done. Worst
is the host, Menino de Valpoi who has no idea on doing interviews and
round-ups. His oral commentary is terrible, worst than his writing. I hope
he should have stayed in Goa as a cop.
The festival is a routine thing, just as Toronto had its Viva Goa but
discontinued because the space is either become too costly or is not rent
out. First two years the crowds were encouraging but dwindled down the
years. People get used to the same stuff but the organisers can't help.
People want song-and-dance stuff and the even is an occasion for social
meeting.
As long as people enjoy the evening and are coming in large numbers to the
event, so be it. The quality is not important for such people. They come to
enjoy the evening and be part of the crowd.
I hop someone better equipped to do the job than Menino de Valpoi (also
diding behind the name Tulsidas Shirodkar, thanks it isn't Tukaram

Panaji: In his zeal to resolve Goa's iron-ore mining crisis, Chief Minister
Manohar Parrikar may well have chosen to throw both, BJP's Lok Sabha 2014
manifesto and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's advise on the need for
auctioning of "natural resources" to the wind.
And in doing so, Parrikar, as minister for mines, who is charting out a
potential course of action for the revival of Goa's multi-billion dollar
mining sector, could have just allowed the same mining companies accused of
a Rs 35,000 crore illegal mining scam back into the big game. Nearly all
mining companies in Goa including big names like the Vedanta
Resources-owned Sesa Goa and others owned by local mining magnates like the
Salgaocars, Timblo's, etc. have been accused of committing illegalities by
the Shah Commission.
Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. PTIGoa Chief Minister Manohar
Parrikar. PTI
In a six-page written statement tabled in the Goa state legislative
assembly on Monday, Parrikar, has suggested that it would prefer to allow
27 existing lease holders to operate renewed mining leases, instead of
choosing other more profitable routes for harvesting iron ore like setting
up a state mining corporation or auctioning the 70 odd available leases to
the highest bidder.
Several of the 27 mining companies have been indicted for mining related
illegalities and irregularities by the Justice MB Shah Commission of
enquiry. Justice Shah also recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation
(CBI) probe into key aspects of the mining scam, masterminded according to
the Commission by a nexus of politicians, bureaucrats mining magnates.
Parrikar claims, his intent to renew the mining leases is directed by an 13
August judgement of the Bombay High Court bench in Panaji, but in reality
by choosing to not appeal against the order and follow the renewal of
leases route, the chief minister may have just gone back on his Modi's 2014
poll manifesto.
"The judgment and order of the Honourable High Court virtually leaves no
choice to the state government, thereby to completely abandon the process
of competitive bidding for earning the best revenue to the State
government," Parrikar told the state legislative assembly Monday.
The 13 August high court order was delivered several months after the
mining companies petitioned the court to allow them to avail of the renewed
mining leases claiming they had paid a stamp duty prescribed by the
government.
Mining in Goa was banned by the Supreme Court in September 2013 on the
heels of a Rs 35,000 crore illegal mining scam exposed by the Shah
Commission appointed by the union ministry of mines. The order lifting the
ban was passed by the apex court in April this year, before which the state
government raised Rs 435 crore in form of stamp duty paid by the 27 mining
lease operators.
While lifting the ban in April, the apex court had ruled that nearly all
mining leases in Goa were not valid and had asked the state government to
initiate a process of issuing fresh leases. But the 13 August High Court
order, which has directed the government to renew the leases of the 27
mining lease holders who have paid the requisite stamp duty, has now
queered the pitch.
Interestingly, Parrikar, who has been accused by the Opposition as well as
civil society of being close to the powerful mining lobby, told PTI a few
days after the High Court order, that the government will not challenge it.
The chief minister also went on to extoll to the news agency the trust
which the mine owners had for his government.
"The mining lease owners trusted government when no one else did it. I
don't need to challenge the high court judgement as it clearly says that
the lease deeds can be executed subject to the conditions laid down by the
Apex court in the writ petition," said Parrikar, whose main poll plank in
2012 was incidentally bringing the accused in the mining scam to book and a
government with zero tolerance to corruption.
Parrikar's trust for the mining stakeholders however appears to override
the basic tenets of poll manifesto on the basis which Prime Minister
Narendra Modi won an unprecedented mandate during the 2014 general election.
Under the 'Natural and National Resources' header in the BJP's poll
manifesto, the party quotes Gandhian virtue and cautions against the
culture of usurping natural resources and mismanagement.
"We will implement auction of precious resources through efficient
mechanisms including e-auction," it reads.
It's not just the manifesto alone which Parrikar appears to be defying, in
favour of the 'trusted' mining lease holders, but Modi's words of caution
too spoken during his Vijay Sankalp rally held in Goa in January.
Modi, who shared dais with Parrikar as well as a galaxy of BJP leaders,
both state and Central,

[Goanet] SALVAGING THE JUDICIARY

2014-08-21 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar besides being an IIT has also mastery in
trying to fish in troubled waters. He must be longing to carve and create
an occasion to corner me. Much as he may have liked, but I have done
absolutely nothing wrong in writing to the Chief Justice of the Bombay High
Court and to the Chief Justice of India that Justice U.V. Bakre had
committed a grave judicial impropriety by having along with his wife as
‘Dampatya’ graced a puja performed at the private office of Advocate
General Atmaram Nadkarni.

As a citizen and more so being an officer of the Court, have only acted
according to the well-established rules of propriety and decorum in
bringing this very inappropriate and unholy act by Judge Bakre to the
notice of the Chief Justices to ensure purity in the judiciary. While
always upholding the majesty of the Court, have and will continue in
fearlessly high lighting every impropriety committed by any judicial
officer. This has to be done to ensure that the very sacred independence
and sovereignty of the Judiciary is not compromised. Interaction between
Judges and Advocates should be strictly restricted to the Court room.

Besides what a Judge does even in his private life, cannot remain private,
as a Judge is a public man, open to public scrutiny even of his private
life, as any other public servant.

Many in the legal fraternity privately grieve and are very concerned about
the current sad state of the Judiciary in Goa. For obvious reasons many may
not dare to speak openly. But have never and will never compromise on my
freedom of speech and expression to only be in good books with the Judges.
Hosting Judges should never be on any advocate’s menu but sadly arranging
those slanted ‘fishy’ spirited dinners has become an art Senior Advocate
Saresh Lotlikar thrives on. As lawyers we should never manipulate and
extract favourable orders from Judges. All we have to hope is that Justice
and nothing but only Justice will emanate from every Temple of Justice.

At all times we have to ensure that no weapon is used to silence the Voice
of Truth. Would rather go to jail than be a mere spectator to the further
degeneration of the Judiciary which today still remains as the last and
only ray of hope for victims of injustice.

Andrew Jackson the seventh President of the United States of America had
said “All the rights secured to the citizens under the Constitution are
worth nothing, and a mere bubble, except guaranteed to them by an
independent and virtuous Judiciary”

PORVORIM: There's bad news for those who drink alcohol in bars and drive.

Chief minister Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday informed the state assembly
that police would be stationed outside bars and they would use alcometers
to check the alcohol levels of all those coming out of the liquor premises
and riding or driving.

"We will clampdown on drunken driving. Police will be kept with alcometers
outside bars," Parrikar said. There are 12,500 bars and alcohol outlets in
Goa, while only 7,200 policemen.

Parrikar also advised members of the House not to drive their vehicles if
they have consumed alcohol as they may be fined. TOI had recently
highlighted the issue of drunken driving. Parrikar said that 772 drunken
driving cases have been booked this year and the drive would be intensified.

Calangute MLA Michael Lobo said that vehicles ridden by tourists caught for
drunken driving are attached by the police and it is the owner of the
vehicle who has to face the hardship. He suggested that the government
recover money from the tourists and not from the two-wheeler owners who
give it on rent.

Replying to Lobo, Parrikar said the government cannot help as the offence
is compoundable by the magistrate. He advised two-wheeler owners to retain
the passports or take Rs 5,000 deposits from the tourists before renting
them vehicles.

Edelweiss... on strings: "Edelweiss" is a show tune from the 1959 Rodgers
and Hammerstein musical The Sound of Music. It is named after the
edelweiss, a white flower found high in the Alps. It was created for the
1959 Broadway production of The Sound of Music in the role originated by
performer Theodore Bikel as a song for the character of Captain Georg
Ludwig von Trapp. In the musical Captain von Trapp and his family sing this
song during the concert near the end of Act II as a statement of Austrian
patriotism in the face of the pressure put upon him to join the navy of
Nazi Germany following the Anschluss. It is also Captain von Trapp's
subliminal goodbye to his beloved homeland, using the flower as a symbol of
his loyalty to Austria. In the 1965 film adaptation, the song is also sung
by the Captain earlier in the film as he rediscovers music and a love for
his children. The great popularity of the song has led many of its audience
to believe that it is an Austrian folk song or even the official national
anthem. Thirty years later "Edelweiss was widely believed to be an old
Austrian song, though Oscar... composed it for the Sound of Music."
