[Goanet] Fwd: Draft Press Release
Dear All, Goans for Dabolim only a group which has been opposing the proposed unrealistic new Airport at Mopa in north of Goa, A press conference was held at institute piedade today 11am in panaji. Sending herewith the press note , please do needful thanking you regards sidharth *PRESS RELEASE* GFDO has been repeatedly warning all Goans that Mopa Airport is nothing but a massive land scam that will destroy Goa irreversibly. While the Government continues to fool the people by saying that Mopa airport is necessary and feasible, its decision to gift 381 acres of land under acquisition to the private Airport developer for commercial use at 4 FAR proves us right - that the proposed Airport is nothing but a massive land scam. The same Government which claims that Goa has a severe scarcity of land is now offering a gift of 381 acres of prime land to a private company for free. This is indeed a cruel joke on the poor unsuspecting residents of Pernem taluka, who are being sentenced to large-scale displacement under the false promise of development, and on the rest of us Goans, who are being forcibly converted into desperate refugees in our own land. Our Government has announced that an unknown private “investor” is being gifted land with permissions for commercial use valued at over 12,000 crores. While the Mopa Airport is being paraded as a necessity and economically viable project, a gift of over 12,000 crores is being offered to private parties, revealing that speculative windfall profits are all that matters to our decision makers. GFDO reminds all Goans that the scam over land under acquisition is just a tip of the iceberg, and that a much greater land scam is awaiting the rest of Pernem Taluka. Unsuspecting local residents in all parts of Pernem are in for a nasty surprise when hordes of developers are going to claim the vast tracts of lands that have charged hands in anticipation of speculative profits in the name of Mopa Airport. The oppressed sections of the feudal society of Pernem, who form the silent majority, remain unaware and clueless about the tidal wave of immigration and resultant large-scale displacement that awaits them in the future. The blind pursuit of short-term profits from speculative land use change has reached epic proportions with the Mopa Airport project, which threatens to destroy Goa’s economy, society and environment for private profits. The real fight for special status for Goa is the fight against the Mopa Airport project and the underlying greed that threatens to consume all of us. All Goans must open their eyes to this bitter truth, before it is too late.
Re: [Goanet] Dev borem Korum - Need word in Konkani
Ixttano, The native Konkani word for beach is "vell", a feminine noun in which the sound of e is open. Hence the plural (beaches) is "vello" (the e is open but the o is closed.) "Doryadeg" is not an apt synonym. "Dorya" = sea and "deg" = margin/border/edge as in "kapddadeg" = border/margin/edge of a sari. Hence this means sea-coast, which is not necessarily a beach. "SamudraKinari" does mean beach in Marathi, but not in Konkani. According to Dalgado, the Konkani words "samudra/som'dir" = sea, ocean and "kinari" = margin, brink, border, side; hence "samudrakinari" means seaside (or even seafront) in Konkani. Perhaps this is what prompted Reis Falcao to pose his query, although he did not specify the context. The Portuguese word "pao" (with a tilde on the a that Goanet does not support), pronounced "panv" in Konkani and "pav" in Marathi, is one of the Konkani words for bread. Konkani has many words each of which refers to a specific variety of bread. "Panv" is used for the baker's loaf; the rustic Saxttikar has his own native term "unddo" for the same. Other specific terms (which are not synonyms of each other) are "bhakri", "polli", "pollo", "sandonn", "koilolli", "kailolli" the list is almost endless. But in European usage bread/pao have wide meanings like, for instance, earning one's bread. In Our Father we say "Give us this day our daily bread" (ENG) or "Pao nosso de cada dia" (PORT). But in the translation of this prayer in Doutrina Christam, Fr. Thomas Stephens (an English Jesuit) does not use "unddo" or "panv" for bread, since,in the context of the prayer bread stands for food/sustenance; hence "unddo" would be inappropriate. He used the Konkani word "gras" instead. But while translating "loaves" in KristPurann he does use "undde". Not only does "pau" mean quarter in Konkani, but it also means stick in Portuguese! [Goanet] AN ASSAULT ON THE JUDICIARY
In a very brazen attack on the independence of the Judiciary, the Goa Government in a sudden and swift move has divested Judge PV Sawaikar of the Goa CBI Court from hearing matters under the Prevention of Corruption Act. Judge Sawaikar who had heard the disproportionate assets case against Goa Speaker Rajendra Arlekar was scheduled to pronounce his order on 17th October. All corruption cases will now be heard by the North Goa Principal District Judge B.P. Deshpande. This runs contrary to the mandate of the Supreme Court that corruption cases should be fast tracked. [Goanet] CCP OFFICE IS IN TROUBLE FOR DISUNITY BETWEEN MAYOR AND COMMISSIONER
Dear Francis D’Sousa Dy. Chief Minister of Goa and Urban Minister Govt of Goa Hon. Sir, Activists and citizens of Panjim have been sending various mails to Mayor and Commissioner of CCP on various complaints such on heritage violation areas as well as a number of illegal constructions which includes CRZ violations, unfortunately these officers does seem to take note of it, neither they acknowledge our letters even it is sent by Registered A/D post with the photos as proofs. I believe there is no coordination between both these officers in CCP which comes under your control. Whenever a person approaches the CCP office for Sanjit Rodrigues, Commissioner of CCP, the answer from the PA at the desk counter tells people that he is out of office. Probably he has been entrusted another portfolio at GSIDC which makes him busy and not to clear the files at CCP office at all. Could you intervene and ask for his explanation or else please see that a new Commissioner is appointed so that the work is taken up expeditiously so that the Panjimites are not put in inconvenience. None of our e-mails are answered by both these officers. An early action is requested, Sir. Thanks Stephen Dias D.Paula Date; 15th October, 2014

[Goanet] Let Only the Experts Speak on Mopa!
Let Only the Experts Speak on Mopa! A couple of days prior to his death, my friend and neighbor was at my house. I clearly remember asking him, "Mathany, now that you have joined the BJP, what will you say when the issue of Mopa comes up?" "I'll say I'm against it," he answered immediately. Alina Saldhana, his widow and loving wife, has rightly said that we need to take the debate on Mopa beyond Mathany. What I have written is simply to put on record what he said to me a couple of days prior to his death. I owe this much to him as a friend. Fr Eremito Rebello states in no uncertain terms that Mopa is a massive land scam. His opinion is objective as he cites reports of experts who claim Dabolim will have to shut down if Mopa becomes a reality. Also, the traffic for Mopa will not be enough, so it is not viable. He goes on to cite statistics based on reports by experts which maintain Dabolim is capable of handling the projected air traffic until 2045. Calangute MLA Michael Lobo is of the opinion 4-lane roads are necessary if tourists are to arrive from Mopa to Margao in an hour. From Dabolim to Margao, as of now, tourists can arrive within an hour without our losing any more land. As the Chinese say, if the first step is wrong, all steps go wrong. Anyway, it is time for the experts to speak, and only experts! If people have no expertise in this area, then their opinions are not worth much and cannot be taken seriously. The building of an international airport involves a serious study and cannot be reduced to the frivolous level of a social topic at a cocktail party. Our recent space mission was successful because of the hard work and expertise of our scientists. Without their expertise, the mission would have ended in a tragedy. The same is true for something as complex as a mega international airport. Let the experts speak! In view of Fr Eremito Rebello's statements, can the people of Goa allow the politician-businessmen nexus to decide on this all-important issue simply because there is a fortune to be made in this mega project? While it is true we have voted the BJP to power, and I am a supporter of this political party, the fact is the Mopa airport mega project is not listed in its manifesto. As CM Manohar has stated, a manifesto is an attempt to persuade the voters. As far as Mopa is concerned, there is no question of having tried to persuade the voters. Having said that, I need to add the pressure on our well-intentioned Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar is tremendous. No chief minister, and I emphasize, no chief minister will be spared on this issue! The chief minister wants to go ahead with another international airport in our small state which appears by all accounts to be something the people of Goa do not need at all. As this is not my field of expertise, I will not make any comment on the viability of the airport. CM Parrikar has announced that he will hold meetings to clear the air and shed the apprehension of the people on this matter. CM Parrikar is a man of science and has a respect for facts, and so we can look forward to an objective discussion of the issue. Fr Eremito Rebello need not fear. It is not easy to fight vested interests. Pratap Singh Rane, a chief minister of Goa several times over, and a solid rock of the Congress Party, claims that Mopa is his baby. Some baby, this. Meanwhile, Luizinho Faleiro, another former chief minister of Goa and a steel pillar of the Congress Party has stated that the Congress Party does not want the international airport! He has been chosen by none other than Sonia Gandhi to fight the building of the airport. Mopa Maka Naka is his mantra. He has got the lyric right but what about the tune? Let us see how well he can dance to it. Fr Eremito has said that Luizinho Falero was for Mopa, but now he is convinced that Mopa is not a viable airport and so he has changed his mind. Does Fr Eremito Rebello need to worry? On one occasion CM Manohar Parrikar compared Luizinho Falero's overnight increase in his wealth as meteoritic. Luizinho Falero, for his part, speaks of his mission to bring back the pristine glory of the Congress Party. He is perceived as a corrupt politician by CM Parrikar and most Goans, and so I can't understand how a dirty broom will be able to clean the dirt that is the Congress Party? Couldn't they find a single, clean broom? Donna Alice might say the situation in Goa is becoming curiouser and curiouser. Has a Congress Party ghost writer scripted a scenario which might be full of surprises? Is there another agenda which we Goans do not know about? The view from Japan is full of smoke and mirrors, but is it any more clear for Goans who live in Goa? A tragicomedy, perhaps? Will the main character be a sort of Goan Don Quixote, someone who will blow hot and cold for a while as he perceives the holy crosses to be giants, and then throws in the towel as the battle cannot be won? Is it a script whose plot is designed for the fight agains
