[Goanet-News] No clear majority for BJP in Maharashtra ... the gutter that is politics (Nikhil Wagle)
No clear majority for BJP in Maharashtra: Has the Narendra Modi wave lost steam? Sunday, 19 October 2014 - 9:45pm IST | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA Nikhil Wagle The Bharatiya Janata Party has achieved historic success in the just concluded Maharashtra assembly elections. The party won 122 seats and has garnered over 27% votes. The BJP or its earlier avatar Jan Sangh, has never achieved this number since 1960. Even when the Shiv Sena-BJP government came to power in 1995, BJP had won only 65 seats. This underlines how historic this win has been for the BJP. And yet, the BJP hasn't been able to attain a majority on its own. Prime Minister Narendra Modi held over 25 rallies in the state and appealed for a clear majority for the party. As the assembly elections were held on the back of the Lok Sabha elections, it was being claimed that there was a Modi wave in the state. It cannot be denied that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's popularity has a lion's share in the BJP victory. But this popularity has not been enough to get a clear majority. BJP party president Amit Shah's caste arithmetic too hasn't been entirely successful. BJP got seats in Mumbai-Thane (25), western Maharashtra (24), north Maharashtra (15), Vidarbha (35) and Konkan (1). Except Konkan, BJP is ahead of the Sena in all regions of Maharashtra. But the party must introspect why it could not do exceptionally well in Vidarbha and why it was rejected in Konkan. It is here that the BJP lost seats that could have come in handy for the majority. It could have done better even in north Maharashtra. Had there been a Sena-BJP alliance, it wouldn't have been difficult for them to get 200 seats. We will know how both parties suffered after details emerge on voting, but breaking of alliance is one of the reasons why Sena's strength was reduced in the Mumbai-Thane belt. MNS too damaged Sena here. And yet, we must give credit to Uddhav for the 60 seats Shiv Sena has won. This was the first assembly election in the absence of Bal Thackeray. Uddhav had played the biggest gamble of his life by playing hardball while negotiating with the BJP. The gamble could have proved costly as the alliance eventually broke. But Uddhav led the campaign from the front and managed to take on the Modi wave to a great extent. Now BJP doesn't have an option to go for an alliance with the Shiv Sena. They will enjoy power if they negotiate in a mature manner now. Or else, the Nationalist Congress Party has already expressed willingness to go with the BJP by offering unsolicited support. One expected Congress-NCP to meet their Waterloo in this election. The Congress-NCP government had faced innumerable allegations of corruption, misappropriations and inefficient governance. And yet, together the two parties have scored 85 seats between them (Congress 45, NCP 41). NCP has kind of managed to keep its bastion in western Maharashtra by winning 21 seats there and Congress was saved by the skin of their teeth as the party won 15 seats in Vidarbha. As many as 14 ministers from this government lost in these polls. Defeats for Narayan Rane, Rajendra Darda, Anil Deshmukh, Nitin Raut, Ganesh Naik, Satej Patil, Sachin Ahir and Harshwardhan Patil have been noteworthy. Each of them behaved like a satrap of their constituency. Rane was the chief of Congress' campaign committee. The message from the voter is clear to them - you cannot continue to run your politics based on money and arrogance. The biggest loser this election seems to be the MNS who had 13 legislators in the last assembly. They managed only 1 seat and not even a single one from Mumbai-Thane this time. Raj Thackeray might be pursued by the media, but the voters seem to be totally disenchanted with him. He had shown hope once upon a time. But today he is a living example of what happens when you don't take politics seriously. The biggest peculiarity however is the entry of Asaduddin Owaisi's All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen's into the Maharashtra assembly. This party now has three MLAs in Maharashtra. We had seen how the party was influencing Muslims here in the Nanded municipal corporation. It was a clear indication that the Muslim voter was going away from the Congress. The entry of such religious fanatical parties is going to prove to be a headache in the future. One of the key issues in this election was the criminalisation of politics. Vijaykumar Gavit and Anil Gote won their seats, but Babanrao Pachpute and jail inmates like Sureshdada Jain and Gulabrao Deokar lost. Political parties must learn a lesson from this. We need to figure if Maharashtra politics will ever go beyond elective merit. This election has also underlined both Modi's influence as well as his limitations. It has also

[Goanet] FOR CHIEF MINISTER MANOHAR PARRIKAR CASINOS ARE NOW PRIDE OF GOA
On 21st August which was the last day of the monsoon session of the Goa Legislative Assembly Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had assured that all the Casino advertisements displayed on the police barricades would be removed immediately. It is two long months and those Casinos advertisements have only increased. While as the Leader of the Opposition Manohar Parrikar had consistently and vehemently opposed the Casinos while branding them as a ‘social evil’ and had vowed to throw them out of the River Mandovi if he came to power. Manohar Parrikar had called Casinos as dens of vice, and had even led an agitation to demand their closure. But ever since coming to power on March 9th 2012 Manohar Parrikar is firmly aboard in love and flirting with the Casino brigade. We all know why the Casinos are today enjoying Chief Minister’s total patronage and unstinted support. He is now going out of the way to promote the Casino culture in Goa. A hell of a U Turn by Manohar Parrikar. [Goanet] Press Conference Launch of Alumni Survey by CII Education, Social Development CSR Panel - Tuesday, 21st Oct 2014 at 1600 Hrs at Hotel Mandovi, Panaji
Dear Members of Press Electronic Media, Greetings from CII Goa, In a first of its kind attempt to obtain feedback from its graduates and post graduates, CII in association with Goa University, is launching an Online Survey to obtain feedback from its Alumni. The survey is conducted by Learning Outcomes, Goa and is designed for easy access on the Android mobile platform and also on a desktop using the Chrome browser. In this regard a Press Conference is being scheduled on Tuesday, 21st Oct 2014 at 1600 Hrs at Hotel Mandovi, Panaji which would be addressed by Dr Satish Shetye, Vice Chancellor, Goa University, Chairman CII Goa Council and the Mentor, CII Education, Social Development CSR Panel. The survey seeks to record the career path of the alumni. It will identify how many are seeking jobs, or are pursuing higher studies or are holding a job. Graduates/ post graduates passing after 2010 can opt to provide details of the first 3 significant jobs in their career. The survey will track the time to get the first job, the remuneration, responsibilities and organisation they joined. We seek information on job location, to provide data to the policy makers about out-migration for jobs. The alumnus can further provide inputs on the 3 subjects that he learnt, that helped his career, 3 subjects that should have been covered extensively and would help in the career and of course 3 subjects that did not benefit the career and could be dropped. This would give relevant inputs to the University Board of Studies in framing the syllabus to make it more relevant. It needs to be emphasised that the survey is designed to ensure security of personal information. The database of alumni logging in with their name, graduation details and email ID will be separate from the database of graduate data, career feedback and the inputs for curriculum etc. Personal data and email ID input of the alumnus will generate a link to the database with an encrypted id which will be emailed to the alumnus. This email verification ensures data credibility. May I request you to kindly send in your confirmation for the Press Conference. I look forward to meeting you at the Hotel Mandovi, Panaji on Tuesday, 21st Oct 2014. With warm regards, Gazal Bhambri State Head-Goa Confederation of Indian Industry 502, Unitech City Center, M. G. [Goanet] [JudeSundayReflections] 30th Sunday of the Year
12-Oct-2014 Dear Friend, If you were to do a web search on the word ‘Love’ you might find at least 54,700,000 sites or more! One would think that everybody knows about love and is talking about love. Love is the subject of umpteen films and the Beatles popularized the song “All you need is love.” What is the love we are talking about? Is it that nice warm sentimental feeling, or is it more than that? Is there one love that is the greatest of all? May God’s Word open our minds and hearts to love! Have a caring weekend! Fr. Jude Sunday Ref: 30th Sun “Only one commandment: Love for God and neighbour!” 26-Oct-2014 Readings: Exodus 22: 21-27;1 Thes.1: 5-10; Mt. 22: 34-40; The first reading from the book of Exodus reminded the people of their obligations towards others, especially the widow, the stranger and the orphan. The time of the exile was definitely a very painful and dark part of the history of the people of Israel, during which they experienced what it meant to be weak and dependant on others. Times were better now but they were asked not to forget what they themselves had undergone and be sensitive to the needs of the foreigners among them, the homeless, the helpless and the dependant. Having felt the pain of injustice and oppression themselves, they must never inflict pain on others. The health of a community can be measured by the way it treats such people. “I have broken the commandment of men…” In the time of the desert monks, there was an abbot by the name of Moses who had a great reputation for holiness. Easter was approaching, so the monks met and decided to fast the entire length of Holy Week. Having come to this decision, each monk went off to his cell, to fast and pray. However, about the middle of the week, two wandering monks came to visit the cell of Abbot Moses. Seeing that they were starving, he cooked a little vegetable stew for them. To make them feel at ease he took a little of it himself. Meanwhile the other monks had seen the smoke rising from the abbot’s cell. It could mean only one thing –he had lit a fire to cook some food. In other words, he had broken the solemn fast. They were shocked. And in the eyes of many of them, he fell from his pinnacle of sanctity. In a body they went over to confront him. Seeing judgement in their eyes, he asked, “What crime have I committed that makes you look at me like this?” “You’ve broken the solemn fast,” they answered. “So I have,” he replied. “I have broken the commandment of men, but in sharing my food with these brothers of ours, I have kept the commandment of God, that we should love one another.” On hearing this, the monks grew silent, and went away humbled and wiser. Flor McCarthy in ‘New Sunday and Holy Day Liturgies’ In the Gospel Jesus is asked the question: “Master, which is the greatest commandment of the law?” Jesus’ answer is plain and simple. “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment.” He adds: “The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself.” What is absolutely certain is that God has to be the top priority of our life. Our lives make sense only when He has the first place. Yet it is a fact that so often God has second place. When we make important decisions about our life do we take into account what God would say about it? The way we structure our time, our energy, our efforts, our lifestyle, all these are realistic indicators pointing to what has priority in our life. The special focus of the Gospel is the fact that Jesus reminds us that the second law is just as important as the first: “You should love your neighbour as yourself.” If I do not love the neighbour whom I can see how can I say I love God? Love is seen in our attitude and actions towards our neighbour. The challenge is to love others just as much as we love ourselves. We all know how we take care of our own needs and wants. When there are decisions to be made is our main consideration: “What’s in it for me?” or “How will my decision/action or inaction affect others?” The yardstick of our action should always be: “In every situation is this action of mine the most loving thing?” Greater love than this... There was an article written in Time magazine years ago, when an airplane suddenly crashed into the sea. The writer claimed that it was one of America’s worst tragedies because of the large number of lives that were lost. It was also America’s hour of heroism. Immediately on hearing of the crash, several rescue operations were set into motion and the rescue workers, saved many survivors. There were several heroes who distinguished themselves that day by their life-saving action. The first heroes were the rescue workers, and when they were later interviewed on TV, they were asked one question: “Why did you risk your life?” They said that it was

The machine can harvest one acre (4,000 sq m) per hour. The harvesting of eight acres can be done in a day. It can save on manual cost (Labour -Men/women, Manai / Kameri) by upto one third. e.g. If traditional manual harvesting was costing say Rs.6,000, the harvester can reduced it to up to Rs.2000 only as the machine does the job of cutting, threshing, winnowing, sorting and even bagging. It’s holding tank capacity is about 12 full sacks or 5 Hundi, or 1,500 L capacity This machine technology necessarily means – No ‘Manai’, No ‘Kamerio’, (labourers) No ‘Bhoum’ No Bullocks (boil / Bulls) for threshing or ‘boum’ etc etc Traditional harvesting is a process of 3-4 days which ends with 'bhoum' ‘Bhoum’ is the traditional final process of paddy threshing which usually done few days after the main harvesting/Threshing. Bhoum involves use of bullocks, drying of hay (tonn) and hay-stacking (Kullem / kuttor ?) etc In Goa, Farmers pays for Harvester Rs.2,200 per hour out as rent of which Rs.1000 paid by the Govt. as subsidy. Note: Mechanised harvesting may mean no or minimum straw / Hay-stack or tonn or kullem which is used as cattle fodder - Cows/Bulls - see last pic Combined harvester costing Rs. 20 - 25 lacs having about 17 motors / belts inside and its one main replacement belt itself cost Rs.1.30 lacs. [Goanet] INDIA IS SET TO HAVE A MODI-FIED JUDICIARY
Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai must be lauded for yesterday being the only MLA having the spine to speak out against Narendra Modi government’s devious National Judicial Appointments Commission Bill which will craftily encroach on and undermine the much needed independence of the judiciary. The current Collegium mode could have been the safest and surest way to preserve the Independence of the Judiciary had it not been reduced to a cabal. The collegium has ended up being a very secret club with the proceedings not being a public record. This veil of secrecy is untenable and cannot go on. The colleguim system should have instead been given a constitutional status with all its deliberations being very transparent and within the purview of the Right to Information Act. There needs to be a reform in the process of judicial appointments by making the judiciary accountable to the public at large while also ensuring it is totally free from political interference. Only then will the Judiciary act as a successful defensive wall against the growing excesses and abuse of power by the executive. But with the government now set to have a say in the selection of judges the awfully dark days are looming for the very Independence and Autonomy of the Judiciary. Modi-fied Judges will soon preside over our Temples of Justice.
