[Goanet-News] Sonia Gomes: Os Cus De Judas by António Lobo Antunes
http://portlingoa.blogspot.in/ Thursday, October 30, 2014 Os Cus De Judas by António Lobo Antunes http://portlingoa.blogspot.in/2014/10/os-cus-de-judas-by-antonio-lobo-antunes.html By Sonia Gomes rgso...@gmail.com Children stretch out their matchstick thin arms, a rusty tin can in the palms of their hands, through the barbed wire surrounding the Camp, just for a morsel, a morsel of just about anything to eat. People sit on their haunches around the camp, starving, waiting just waiting for a scrap of food. Women turn prostitutes for a morsel to feed their children. Their eyes reflect patience, endless patience. There is nothing, absolutely nothing. No medicines. No food for anyone. This is what Antonio Lobo Antunes sees every day in Angola, he fights a war he just does not want to fight, he has left his pregnant wife back home in Portugal for a war which has absolutely no meaning for him or for that matter for anyone else. Antonio Lobo Antunes is brutal. And why not? The colonial war for Independence turned civil war was ferocious. Seen through the tired eyes of the doctor António Lobo Antunes this bloody Colonial War is savage. What is there about this vicious War? Every sordid detail is placed before you. Take the terrible, terrible loneliness sapping you of your will to live, add to it the lack of camaraderie between the soldiers, compounded by the utter hopelessness of the War. They just want to go home. What are they fighting for? What is all this bloody War about? They all wonder, there seems to be absolutely no escape, shall we commit suicide, or shall we wait for a nice coffin. There are no answers. Who are the Victorious? Doesn't seem to be any, in fact all of them are losers. Everyone a victim. The people of Angola are in a vacuum, what the hell is going on? There the Colonisers, the Portuguese, and then some other Outside Forces urging them to get rid of the regime, purify your country evict the Colonisers. Where are they heading? Such a colossal waste this war is, such terrible consequences, one moment the people of Angola are fighting a war of Independence, throwing the Colonisers out of their country and the next thing they know the war for Independence has turned into a Civil war. How could it have happened? That is the way Colonisers operate. They are the Masters. They take what they want, they use, they abuse, and when they can use no more they leave. It really is very simple. Good news for Portugal overnight it had turned into a Democracy. They were free without shedding a drop of blood. Why take care of countries which now are a burden? What can they get from a war torn Nation? Abandon the Africans to their own fate. The Colonisers owe these illiterates nothing. Take care of yourselves; you are now Independent, you are now Free, Isn’t that what you wanted anyway? Black brother fought Black brother, aided by powerful 'Democratic countries'. Black brothers killed Black brothers. Oh yes, terrible, terrible consequences. But who for God’s sake cares for a bunch of illiterate, black people? The white, democratic people know these Blacks do not amount to much anyway. Eventually when Lobo Antunes does return to Portugal, life is never the same for him, nobody in Portugal respects these soldiers who were embroiled in a meaningless war. Slowly and steadily he loses everything. His marriage just meanders and falls apart. His beloved daughters, he sees them once a week. He begins drinking; you see he hopes that 'it will never be morning again'. He has encounters with strange women in bars. He is just a sad beaten man. Once upon a time, a very long time ago he had been a Doctor but now he is a sad, beaten and humiliated man. A husk of a man, he is a person who has no substance, no personality, not even character, his dreams and hopes long gone, an empty shell of a human that once was. Oh yes, war does that to you. Brutal though the book is, there are those moments of utter sadness permeated by a luminosity, which lifts the book out of being just a book of utter brutality and makes it a beautiful story. António Lobo Antunes was born in Lisbon, the eldest of six sons of João Alfredo de Figueiredo Lobo Antunes. At the age of seven he decided to be a writer, but when he was 16, his father sent him to the medical school at the University of Lisbon. He graduated as a medical doctor specializing in psychiatry. All through this time he never stopped writing. By the end of his education, Lobo Antunes had to serve in the Portuguese Army and participate in the Portuguese Colonial War, which lasted from 1961 to 1974. Lobo Antunes returned from Africa in 1973. The Angolan war for independence was the subject of many of his novels. In 1979, Lobo Antunes published his first novel, Memória de Elefante – The Memory of an Elephant,
[Goanet-News] NEWS: Black Money trail: Radha Timblo - Goa miner and hotelier (Business Standard)
Black Money trail: Radha Timblo - Goa miner and hotelier Will offer proper explanation BS Reporter | Mumbai October 28, 2014 Last Updated at 00:39 IST Till recently, Radha Satish Timblo, owner of mining firm Timblo Enterprises, was leading a quiet life in Goa. The government's revelation on Monday that she is one of those to have stashed black money in Switzerland has surprised everyone in the state, including those from the Timblo family. That's because only a few years ago, Timblo was one of the highest taxpayers in the state and charges of tax evasion were seldom associated with the group. The group owns the luxurious Cidade De Goa resort in Goa. It was also a bottler for Pepsi in the state and had switched sides after Coke tried to buy it out in 1997. Asked about her account in Switzerland, Timblo, well known for her political connections in the Goa Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), told reporters she would offer a proper explanation and issue a press note after studying the government's affidavit to the Supreme Court. In a statement late Monday evening, the Association of Democratic Reforms said its analysis of donations by individuals and companies to national political parties between 2004-05 and 2011-12 showed Timblo Pvt Ltd, led by its managing director Radha Timblo, had made donations to BJP on nine occasions and thrice to the Congress. An email sent to Timblo did not elicit any response. Her office said it would respond to the email, in case there was a reply from her. The family is, like the Dempos and the Salgoakars, which made their fortunes with mining, one of the old, rich ones in Goa. The family is close to the Congress and its net worth will easily be more than Rs 1,000 crore, said a Mumbai-based chief executive, on condition of anonymity. Like most of Goa's business families, the Timblos owned mines, resorts, hotels and football clubs in the state, he added. This isn't the first time Timblo is making news for the wrong reasons. According to a centrally empowered committee (CEC) report on illegal mining in Goa, in December 2012, Timblo had taken ownership of a mining lease in Goa illegally, by using power of attorney from a certain Badrudin Hussain Bhai Mavani, a resident of Pakistan. Mavani is alleged to have died in Karachi. The CEC report said Mavani's signature doesn't match the signature on another power of attorney document signed in 1979. The mining lease has been allowed to be operated illegally, by a partnership firm comprising Timblo Pvt Ltd, Radha S Timblo and others. The mining lease has been renewed … by disregarding and in blatant violation of rule 37, MCR, 1960, and on the basis of an unregistered power of attorney, stated to have been executed by the lessee while staying in Pakistan and whose genuineness and validity were highly dubious and doubtful, the report said. Soon after, the Supreme Court shut mines in Goa and asked the state government to auction those. http://www.business-standard.com/article/current-affairs/black-money-trail-radha-timblo-goa-miner-and-hotelier-114102800032_1.html

[Goanet] COURT DIRECTS FORMER DoP SHOBHA DHUMASKAR TO BE IN COURT ON NOV 7TH IN CORRUPTION CASE
Special Judge under the Prevention of Corruption Act B.P.Deshpande today directed Goa’s former Director of Prosecution Shobha Dhumaskar to remain present in Court on November 7th at 2.30 pm. Shobha Dhumaskar who is facing corruption charges under Section 13 (2) read with Sections 13 (1) (d) (i) (ii) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 had failed to remain present in Court despite having been summoned as an accused two months ago. Today her lawyer submitted a medical certificate issued by Mapusa based orthopedic surgeon Dr Harish Tople that Shobha Dhumaskar has been advised three weeks complete bed rest but when Judge Deshpande stated that the doctor would be summoned to ascertain the veracity of the medical certificate the lawyer for Shobha Dhumaskar quickly agreed to keep her present in Court on November 7th. Earlier the Court’s attention was drawn that Shobha Dhumaskar had been evading to attend Court on fabricated medical certificates while she was seen all over except in Court. The accused Shobha Dhumaskar more so having been the Director of Prosecution should have respectfully submitted to the Court’s jurisdiction instead of making a mockery of the Justice delivery system. On 6th September the CBI Court while rejecting the plea by the Anti– Corruption branch (ACB) to close the corruption case against Shobha Dhumaskar directed her to face trial as there was sufficient material to prima facie establish commission of an offences by the former Director of Prosecution punishable under section 13(2) read with Sections 13(1) (d) (i) and (ii) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. Meanwhile the Special Judge under the Prevention of Corruption B.P Deshpande today adjourned to November 7th hearing of the final arguments on the petition filed against Rajendra Arlekar Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly in the disproportionate assets case. After hearing final arguments in the case against Rajendra Arlekar the Judge PV Sawaikar of the CBI Court had fixed the case for judgment on October 17th but just a day earlier on 16th October he was divested of his powers to hear matters under the Prevention of Corruption Act. [Goanet] Complaint to Goa Union of Journalists over denial of maternity leave to a young woman employee in her last stage of pregnancy
Complaint to Goa Union of Journalists over denial of maternity leave to a young woman employee in her last stage of pregnancy To, Kishor Naik Gaonkar President: Goa Union of Journalists. Dear Kishor Naik Gaonkar On Friday (October 31), via Facebook post I had written about a woman employee at the Herald was denied maternity leave during her last stage of pregnancy. I had also uploaded copies of communication between Herald's Editor (Features) and the general manager Michael Pereira to corroborate the content in the post. This is an inhuman, debased action, which deserves sternest condemnation. My request to you as an organisation which is supposed to look after the welfare of the journalist community is to pursue the case to its logical conclusion. As far as I know agencies like the state Human rights commission, State Women's Commission, Labour department are the agencies which need to be complained to. You could also verify if this amounts to a criminal violation. As a collective I am sure you better disposed to follow the complaint to its logical conclusion. Kindly treat this as a formal complaint from my end. warm regards Mayabhushan -++--++--+-- Communication between Devika Sequiera and Michael Pereira -- Forwarded message -- From: Devika Sequeira devikaseque...@gmail.com Date: 18 October 2014 11:58 Subject: Re: temporary replacement To: GM Operations g...@herald-goa.com, Brand Mentor brandment...@gmail.com Mr Michael Pereira GM Herald Publications Oct 18, 2014 Dear Mr Pereira ??? has applied for leave without pay (since you insisted the organisation does not have maternity leave) and followed all the official procedures in consultation with the HR department who told her how to go about taking leave for the delivery of her baby. [Goanet] Entry tax in Goa
Entry Tax in Goa When Goa C.M tried to augment revenues he imposed this tax, Initially there was vociferous reaction from traders and even states to block supplies. Goa is a lucrative market for their goods and products, C.M did not succumb to pressures and threats and continued with it, Goa Govt, might be legitimately happy for collecting a few crores .The transporters and manufacturers passed on the increase to consumers reaping twice over and the good became very costly as a result. In the final analysis it is the Goan consumers who paid for it A travel in Sept. to Valakani from Goa traversed through Karnataka, Tamilnadu The Goa road is pathetic, took much time negotiating the badly pot holed road, At 17 toll plazas the car cost Rs1000= approximately one way. The roads are immaculately maintained and smooth. No rumblers or speed breakers on highways but only sparsely, removable barricades , wherever necessary, Both the states have huge tracts of waste, available land area , but have only 4 lanes. This is sufficient and does not hamper smooth flow of traffic. Why Goa needs 6 lanes is not understandable in spite of the fact, that we have very limited land in comparison. When the land was acquired in 1986 there is very little progress even clearing the stretch, .Many illegal structures have come up in spite of regular checks by NHAI turning blind eye and putting the onus temporarily on violators. Have`nt our legislators ever traveled by these roads any time in the past or recent times? Nelson Lopes. Chinchinim
[Goanet] Fwd: Sporting Clube de Goa look to qualify for Semi’s
*Sporting Clube de Goa look to qualify for Semi’s * Sporting Clube de Goa will look to qualify for the semi-finals when they take on Air India in the final match in group B, of the Durand Cup at Raia Panchayat ground, Goa, on Sunday. The kick off time is 3.45pm and entry is free. Sporting Goa won their opening match against United Sports Club 3-2. In the other match United Sports Club defeated Air India 2-1. Only one team from each group qualifies for a semi-final berth. Sporting Goa would only need a draw to qualify for the semi-finals, while Air India would need to win by a two goal margin to qualify and prevent USC’s chances of progressing. With all three teams still in contention for moving into the next round this final group game will be watched with keen interest. Despite only needing a point, there is only one thing on the Sporting Goa Coach Oscar Bruzon’s mind and that is winning the game. “We are not thinking about the next phase at this moment and are only fully focussed on victory against Air India,” remarked Oscar. Oscar took his squad to watch the USC/Air India encounter as part of the preparation for the final game. “Air India plays very compact and is a physical side, but I feel technically we have the players in every department to come away with the desired result,” reasoned Oscar. Oscar believes that this is the most high profile match of the season so far and that his players are charged up to deliver. “This is for sure the most important game of the season and my players are ready to put up a strong performance,” signed off Oscar. [Goanet] Either EPIC or Aadar card to open bankaccount
Pan card for account opening Some Nationalised Banks are compulsorily demanding Pan Card or declaration to that effect. The public notice at some Bank premises reads that failure to give Pan card will automatically result in deduction at source, if the interest payable exceeds Rs10.000= annually. It also needed for withdrawal or deposits above one lakh rupees. Then why are the banks insisting on production of Pan Cards for opening of accounts? The P.M. Jan Dan scheme is facing purposive road blocks to derail the scheme .Crores of rupees in deposits are collected, a target number of accounts are to be opened, but account holder under the scheme is yet to receive the Ru Card, forget about deriving the benefits attached to it How long it will take to obtain the Ru card? It is clear instruction that only one photo identity and one address proof from the list mentioned are needed. Those staying in rented premises have no House number and address proof becomes a burden, Besides the Aadar Card has both the requirements, but Banks opine that they have not received any circular to consider Aadar Card as sufficient photo identity and address proof .For the moment it serves as only one proof. The EPIC too has address proof and is a photo identity .These are Govt. recognized documents but the obstinate Bank officers create impediments and harass the would be customers. A clear directive is needed so that the poor, illiterate people are not wrongfully denied the right to open bank accounts with either Aaadar card or EPIC card without harassment Nelson Lopes Chinchinim
[Goanet] This pope means business - Fortune
From: bcsabha.kal...@gmail.com To: http://fortune.com/2014/08/14/this-pope-means-business/ The wildly popular Francis is more than a pontiff of the people. He’s an elite manager who’s reforming the Vatican’s troubled finances. The new pope wanted to talk about money. That was the message that went out to a group of seven prominent financiers—major Catholics all—from around the world in the summer of 2013. Barely five months after the shocking resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, Pope Francis had summoned them to assemble at the seat of holy power, the Vatican. They knew their general assignment: to create a plan to restructure the Vatican’s scandal-plagued finances. And like Catholics everywhere, they knew that Francis had already signaled that he was a new kind of pontiff, a “people’s pope” who championed charity and tolerance over dogma. Still, they didn’t know what to expect when they arrived at the Vatican for a meeting with the pope on the first Saturday in August. How interested was he in finance, really? And how serious was he about changing business as usual inside the Vatican?A major hint came from a change in tradition upon their arrival: The visitors didn’t report to the Apostolic Palace, the Renaissance showplace where for centuries past popes had received visitors in high style. Instead they entered Vatican City on the other side of the colonnade of St. Peter’s Square and took a 150-yard stroll through the hilly enclave to the new pope’s place of business—Casa Santa Marta, a five-story limestone guesthouse that could be mistaken for a newish hotel. There they were ushered into a nondescript meeting room on the first floor with no paintings or religious ornaments and took their seats around a conference table. The members—including Jean-Baptiste de Franssu, ex-chief of asset-management giant Invesco in Europe; Jochen Messemer, a top executive at ERGO, a large German insurer; and George Yeo, former foreign minister of Singapore—chatted nervously as they waited. After 15 minutes, Pope Francis entered the room—and got right down to business. Attired in a simple white cassock and plain metal cross, he took his place standing at the head of the table. With little preamble, he began outlining his strategic vision, in an approach described by one participant as “highly managerial.” Speaking in fluent Italian and taking frequent pauses while a translator repeated his words in English, the pope explained to the group that for his spiritual message to be credible, the Vatican’s finances must be credible as well. After centuries of secrecy and intrigue, it was time to open the books to the faithful. Strict rules and protocols must be adopted to end the cycle of scandals that had plagued the Vatican in recent years. An aerial view of St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican, a sovereign nation ruled by the Pope and located on 110 acres in the heart of RomePHOTOGRAPH BY MASSIMO SESTINI/POLIZIA DI STATO—REUTERSFrancis declared that sound financial management was a pillar of his greatest mission: aiding the poor and underprivileged. That mission was endangered by volatile, unpredictable budgets that careened from modest surpluses to steep deficits. The Vatican’s inept practices had inhibited giving, he explained, and had to stop. “When the administration is fat, it’s unhealthy,” he said. Francis wanted a leaner, more efficient Vatican administration that would be solidly “self-sustaining.” That, he said, would free up more money for his charities. “You are the experts,” the pope said, “and I trust you. Now I want solutions to these problems, and I want them as soon as possible.” With that, Francis left the group to figure out the details. There was no ambiguity about the job ahead. “The Holy Father’s message was crystal clear: ‘Let us make money to go to the poor,’” recalls Joseph Zahra, chief of the panel, a pontifical commission known by its acronym, COSEA. Zahra, a former chairman of the Bank of Valletta, Malta’s largest bank, says of Francis: “In finances, he’s not a micromanager but an inspirational leader.”As the spiritual shepherd of the world’s 1.2 billion Roman Catholics, Pope Francis, 77, has already done more in 18 months to energize the church and burnish its image than anyone has since the heyday of John Paul II in the mid-1980s. What’s far less appreciated is his intense engagement—and astounding success—in overhauling the Vatican’s finances and pushing the adoption of modern practices it had resisted for decades. “The changes are massive,” says René Brülhart, chief of the AIF, the Vatican equivalent of the Securities and Exchange Commission. “Now a clear game plan has been put in place, and we’re really part of the international community.”The past 15 years have been a time of turmoil and decline for the church. It has suffered blow after blow to its image, from the pedophilia scandals that have plagued it for over a decade to the
[Goanet] THE CULTURE OF DEATH by Fr. Cedric Prakash sj (31 Oct 2014)
From: bcsabha.kal...@gmail.com To: From: cedricprak...@gmail.com To: cedricprak...@gmail.com THE CULTURE OF DEATH October 31st 1984 and the days that followed, will be forever be etched in my psyche and memory,In the wake of the assassination of the Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on that fateful morning,we were witnesses to one of the most violent and bloodiest chapters in the history of modern India. It was unthinkable and totally unacceptable that any human being could be so inhuman! The way innocent Sikhs were butchered; many were hounded out of their houses which were then looted and razed to the ground. Remembering all this make one -even thirty years later -hang our heads down in shame! The total collapse of civil society and the inability of the then Government to deal with the situation with a firm hand-has definitely left not merely several unanswered questions -but make them also complicit in the act. Some of us were involved in a kind of a response: identifying bodies from the Tis Hazari morgue, helping to trace missing persons and even in the running relief camps;besides , we were also engaged in fact-finding: trying to identify persons who were responsible for the actual murderous violence. Very tragically for India, the wheels of justice have hardly moved. The persons behind this genocide were protected and were never brought to justice So when the Gujarat Genocide took place in 2002 -presided over by those who rule us today- the constant reference point has been Delhi 1984..So in more ways than, one the horrendous massacres that took place in Gujarat post -February 27th 2002 , seemed to draw a legitimacy from what took place in Delhi post- October 31st 1984! Two wrongs have NEVER made a right! For years now we seem to permit violence and the culture of death to permeate the very core and fabric of our country. The big guys easily get away with murder;being elected to power or to an office DOES NOT cleanse one of guilt nor absolve one of the crime.History has many examples to demonstrate this. We don't seem to have learnt either from the lessons of 1984 or 2002! It's already very late- but there is still the possibility for us to wake up - to ensure JUSTICE for the victim survivors of 1984 and 2002; and above all,to move from the culture of death towards a culture of life!Fr. [Goanet] Mumbai: Team restoring Thane church stumbles on hidden heritage ....MM 1 Nov pg 7

Known to be the only church with baroquestyle architecture in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region comprising Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane, it is being restored by conservation architect Vikas Dilawari who has worked on prestigious projects like the Bhau Daji Lad museum, Rajabhai clock tower among others. “The restoration work was so elaborate that the architect wanted an empty church to work efficiently. We first thought of shifting the church to a hall above the building, but senior churchgoers would have had trouble climbing them,“ said parish priest Fr Allwyn D'Silva. The prayers are now held in a makeshift church erected inside the campus till the restoration is completed. While Dilawari declined to comment, it is expected to take six months. While working on the Rs 5-crore restoration project, workers came across several hidden facets including a walled opening or passageway on the west side. “The architect asked for our permission to break the wall to explore what lay beyond,“ said D'Silva, adding that a doorway and a small window were discovered. Senior parishioners believe this doorway led to a friary that does not exist now. “We decided to open it mainly for a good breeze inside the church,“ he added. The architects also discovered floral motifs in stone near the sanctuary, concealed under the vault and gilded to highlight the carvings.Workers also discovered beautiful carvings on a wooden door, hidden under several coatings of oil paint. As they began scraping the paint off, the baroque carvings became clearer. Parishioners say the original church was destroyed during the Maratha invasion. This church, earlier known as St Anthony's Church, was saved as it was located away from the Portuguese settlements. The church gradually became the main parish and was renamed as St John The Baptist. In a community magazine article, historian
