[Goanet] Matheran and the Holy Cross Feast
From: bcsabha.kal...@gmail.com To: From: aguiar...@gmail.com Good Morning, Below is an article in the latest issue of the SECULAR CITIZEN that will be on the stands this – 4th May Do comment / respond on the article – Matheran and the Holy Cross Feast Happy Reading Don Aguiar Mob - +91 9820603927. Matheran and the Holy Cross Feast Don Aguiar. In our younger days when we travelled to Matheran for the HOLY CROSS FEAST, which falls either on the first or second Sunday in May, we always looked forward to the “toy” train and the vendors shouting – “Aaay, col' drrrinks, fofcorn, chiffsss... Sometimes a vendor flashes a grin at us through the window bars of our toy train as it pants resolutely over the winding narrow-gauge track. Snack tray slung over his neck, he is swinging adroitly from one carriage to the next along the foot-boards. We level out, travelling through a glade of spreading trees. The soil is now rust colored and pathways meander through the forest. As groups of holiday-makers pause to wave and shout greetings, the train, in a burst of confidence, puts on a terrific show of speed. We steam into Matheran station with aplomb. As youngsters we suck on popsicles or play hand-made paper-windmills against the breeze, Later during our teenage years we boys girls used to start from Neral after a customary breakfast at the hotel opposite the station with Rava Idlis and Misal Pau and trek our way up on the hill opposite the great Matheran Mountain. Surprisingly the girls used to take the lead throughout which they later explained: they feared the idea of being left far behind. First half hour is always ok. Not many fellow trekkers on this route as most tourists zoomed past in the cars, private taxis and Mobikes. We used to stop three times once on a bend once at Ganesh mandir where we have cold drink and one in a wayside restaurant to relieve and have lemon juice. The road I recollect was never a tar road, not even one that goes to Karjat. Even 20 years back this was a pretty dangerous road with steep curves where marutis would fail in summer due to intense heat and there were instances when cars have fallen in the ravines. Matheran, means forest on the forehead (of the mountains), is an eco-sensitive region, declared by the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Government of India. It is Asia's only automobile-free hill station. It is the smallest hill station in the world. It is also the cleanest hill station. No vehicles are allowed inside the town including bicycles. You have to walk the whole place or get a horse. Wildlife includes monkeys (lots of them) and horses trotting along the path as the local means of transport. Jokes apart, Matheran is known as being an abode for various exotic birds. I would probably attribute that to the pollution free air and lack of vehicle sound. You can ramble through the woods to various lookout points, or maybe go horseback riding or Browse through the market. Or just laze around! So as one can imagine, Matheran, a tiny hill station in Maharashtra was known for scenic beauty and wilderness alone. Yet, time has taken its toll and those who have not been to Matheran for many years will be pleasantly surprised. Much indeed has changed. Several multi-storied hotels have sprung up, and with their garishly painted modern architecture, they are hideously incongruous among the gently forested glades. They offer the same amenities you have in a Mumbai hotel and play loud music disturbing the calm, quite and scenic surroundings. Unlike our younger days where the population of the monkeys was more than that of humans and the Victorian styled cottages and hotels gave you the feeling of being in the wilderness and entwined in the calm, quite and scenic beauty this beautiful place offers. It also had a small, but affluent, resident population. Retirees, mainly, who lived in sprawling bungalows with winding pathways and curlicued, iron-wrought gates, reminiscent of the days of the Raj. Most of these homes are hidden within forest glades, but some flank the pathways. Not any more as most of these bungalows have given way to multi-storied hotels accommodating tourists who are more glued to their mobiles and TV’s and only move in and around their hotel or nearby restaurants rather than rambling through the woods to various lookout points in order to appreciate the calm, quite and scenic beauty this beautiful place offers. As usual my dad, mom, brother and I use to go for a morning stroll. The pathways are deserted at this hour, but the morning is alive with movement and sound. A couple of hens pecking busily in the dust, flutter agitatedly at our approach, and a defiant cockerel stretches his neck into a long koo-koo-roo-ko before strutting off. Parrots, dawn-flashed into emerald bursts of colour, screech
[Goanet] Indonesia: Condemned men sing 'Amazing Grace' before execution
From: bcsabha.kal...@gmail.com To: Condemned men sing 'Amazing Grace' before executionAs they walked to face the firing squad in Indonesia, eight drug traffickers defiantly sang their praise to GodNick Perry for AFP, CilacapIndonesiaApril 29, 2015As they walked to face the firing squad on an Indonesian prison island, eight condemned drug traffickers defiantly sang praise to God, witnesses said, while in a town across the water a group of tearful supporters was also uniting in song. The convicts — two from Australia, one from Brazil, four from Africa and one Indonesian — made the long journey from their prison to clearings on a prison island to meet their fate early Wednesday. But rather than bow their heads in defeat and resignation, the convicts all reportedly refused blindfolds and raised their voices in song, including a rendition of Amazing Grace, until the gunfire from the firing squads rang out.The husband of Pastor Christie Buckingham, who gave spiritual guidance to one of the Australians in his final moments, said his wife told him the men conducted themselves with dignity and strength until the end.She told me the eight of them walked out onto the killing field singing songs of praise, Rob Buckingham told 3AW radio in Australia.Across the water in the town of Cilacap, the final crossing point for inmates destined for death on the high-security Nusakambangan island, a small band of mourners held a candlelight vigil, and also sang Amazing Grace. The haunting sounds filled the night sky, drowning out the sobs of those too distressed to contemplate what was taking place in the jungle-clad hills of the prison island. One man wailed loudly and implored Indonesian President Joko Widodo to have mercy. Another supporter read out the names of each inmate one by one. Owen Pomana, a former convict turned pastor and friend of Australian convicts Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, tried to buoy the spirits of those dwelling on the fate of the prisoners.Fear not, they have nothing to fear! he declared of the condemned inmates.Moments later, the eight inmates were dead, executed by 12-man firing squads after being tied to posts.Just before dawn, their bodies returned from the island in coffins, some covered in embroidery.Family members could be seen crying, ushered away by friends and supporters to begin the long journey to bury their loved ones.Angelita Muxfeldt, the cousin of Brazilian inmate Rodrigo Gularte, wept as she was led through the large throng of onlookers by Father Charlie Burrows. But others shed tears of joy. The family and friends of Filipina convict Mary Jane Veloso — who was moments away from being executed with the others only to be granted a reprieve — rushed to the port to embrace and express their disbelief.Father Harold Toledano, a Filipino priest assisting the Veloso family throughout their plight, had been praying when he heard the good news. This is a miracle for us, he cried, as Veloso's lawyers and supporters celebrated. It's like a resurrection for us. She is alive. For the Chan and Sukumaran families, there was no such solace. They had lost their sons, their brothers, after begging for their lives to be spared at every possible opportunity. They asked for mercy, but there was none, the family said in a statement after the executions. They will bury their loved ones soon, but won't be the first.Barely had the dust settled at Cilacap port when Zainal Abidin — the sole Indonesian prisoner among the group — was laid to rest at a nearby graveyard. President of UGJ, Joe D'Souza, said, Normally we could depend on Mickey Pacheco to say something grammatically bizarre but he has resigned from the cabinet and in fact is in hiding from the police. So that dependable source for sound-bytes has dried up. Chief Minister Parsekar also can be relied upon for a headline by calling disabled children 'God's Mistakes' or to tell girls that a dark skin would hurt their marital prospects. But the CM also is silent recently. Of course there seems to be a lot of 'bureaucratic mistakes' in drafting of Bills and Amendments, but that is considered par for the course with the current dispensation and the media has begun taking that for granted. You must remember it is not just us Goan journalists but the entire nation, and definitely the national press, looks towards Goa for stupid quotes. The Dhavalikar family some days back gave us enough fodder to fill many pages. But how long can we depend on just one family to make doltish statements about bikinis and sarees and kum kums and convent school education. There has to be an equal opportunity and a balanced playing field. Dynasty politics, even in the number of outlandish comments one family can produce should not be a monopoly. For some time Deputy CM Francis D'Souza showed potential with his affirmation that all Christians were born Hindu, and that he was a Christian Hindu etc etc. But that lasted just a few days. Except for the time that Parrikar left for Delhi and D'Souza suddenly decided he was the champion of the minority Catholic community, he has not really given any brainless quotes that could make national headlines. We look forward to the opposition to fill up the gap left by the ruling party. Digambar Kamat's walk in public with a naked sadhu was cool but really we need something more provocative. We need something to restore the nations faith in us as a reliable source for moronic quotes. This week the Goa Cabinet has definitely failed us. Via: Cecil Pinto's Facebook page. [Goanet] Breakthrough Moment for Konkani Literature?
In an unprecedented international recognition for contemporary Konkani writing, the recent collection of short stories by Damodar Mauzo (translated by Xavier Cota) has made it to the longlist of finalists for the 2015 Frank O'Connor Short Story Award, the single biggest prize in the world for a collection of short stories which carries a purse of 25,000 UKPounds. The Longlist Announcement: http://www.frankoconnor-shortstory-award.net/site/?page_id=5 My review of Teresa's Man from Mint Lounge:http://www.livemint.com/Leisure/vi6WVxfVHD25rcKaU2IINM/Book-Review-Teresas-Man-And-Other-Stories-From-Goa.html No Indian language has been as splintered as Konkani. This “oldest of modern Indo-Aryan tongues”, according to the polymathic scholar Jose Pereira, has undergone extraordinary tribulations—persistent pressure from more powerful regional languages like Marathi and Kannada, a long period of violent suppression during the Inquisition years in Goa (1560-1812), the consequent struggle for survival through waves of diaspora, and then a ferocious postcolonial agitation, which finally resulted in its acceptance in 1992 as an official language under the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. That roller-coaster history has produced a unique situation—native speakers now write the language of the Konkan in five different scripts: Devanagari, Kannada, Malayalam, Perso-Arabic and Roman. And while just over two million speakers of Konkani are distributed along India’s western coastline, they have developed dozens of variant dialects and pronunciation styles, almost to the point of mutual incomprehension. It has taken considerable revivalist energy over a full century in Goa (where it is the official state language) and Mangaluru to restore Konkani’s literary trajectory. Given that bumpy ride back to literature, the 14 stories in translation that comprise Damodar Mauzo’s wonderfully varied compilation, Teresa’s Man And Other Stories From Goa, definitely indicate that contemporary Goan-Konkani writing merits far greater attention than usually comes its way. While Mauzo and his close contemporaries, Pundalik Naik and Mahabaleshwar Sail, have consistently won Sahitya Akademi awards and national recognition, it is only recently that a substantial corpus of their work has begun to appear in English translation. The lively, consistently surprising Teresa’s Man holds out the promise of many more unexpected pleasures in the Goan-Konkani literary storehouse. More than any other writer in contemporary Konkani literature, Mauzo epitomizes the multilayered, profoundly confluent identity of Goans. He grew up in a Hindu family surrounded by Catholic neighbours in the gorgeous seaside village of Majorda, where the sense of community blurred all boundaries. He often recounts that at a particular time in his infancy, he was nursed by his mother’s friend, whose own baby grew up to become “Maestro” Anthony Gonsalves, the legendary musician who helped create “the sound of Bollywood”. Most of Mauzo’s books and short stories are about Goans with Catholic names, but he writes about this world strictly as an insider. Which makes perfect sense in Majorda (and the rest of India’s smallest state) but almost certainly wouldn’t work anywhere else. Then, as though specifically to further confound stereotypical conventions, many of Mauzo’s most important stories have been written from a woman’s perspective. This includes the stellar novel Karmelin, a courageous and tender portrayal of a guest worker in Kuwait that is probably the single greatest achievement in Konkani literature. At the launch of Teresa’s Man in Panaji in October, the acclaimed novelist and writer (and part-time Goa resident) Amitav Ghosh spoke of his admiration forKarmelin, pointing out that Mauzo and he are among an unaccountably small group of Indian writers who write about West Asia and its web of connections to India. Even today, tens of thousands of Goans live and work in West Asia, and Mauzo often returns to that diaspora in his writing. The first story in the new compilation is set in Saudi Arabia. From The Mouths Of Babes is a finely drawn stream of thoughts flowing through the mind of Mithila, a young Goan woman chafing under the strictures of the religious police even as she tries to evoke a more open display of physical affection from her husband. From that very urban setting—with its mention of emails and “netiquette”—Teresa’s Man makes for prismatic reading as Mauzo’s writerly eye perches on a dazzling variety of shoulders. We sit among Goan politicians on a hedonistic break in New Delhi, accompany a Dalit cattle herder across the Karnataka border into Goa—he has been told “you’ll live like a human there”—and drive around the back streets of Margao with enigmatic Baboy, who “knew only one thing: accept everything with a laugh”. Xavier Cota, the translator of Teresa’s Man, mentions in his “Translator’s Note” that these stories were written over four decades. But
