[Goanet] CASINOS SHOULD BE DRIVEN OFFSHORE
While the Leader of the Opposition Manohar Parrikar had branded Casinos as a “social evil” and called them dens of vice. While leading that agitation against Casinos, Manohar Parrikar had vowed to make sure that all Casinos were thrown out of Goa if the BJP came to power. But in a dramatic U turn in March 2012 after coming to power Manohar Parrikar allowed yet another Casino the monstrous ‘M.V. Horseshoe’. The BJP in Goa has since fallen in love with the Casino brigade which is now getting the government’s total patronage and support. While the BJP is feasting and making merry with the abundant funds flowing from the Casinos, Goa has sadly become the country’s gambling hub with the allied vices of prostitution and the narcotics trade also flourishing by the day. On 10th October 2013 then Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had finally assured the Goa Legislative Assembly that all the Casinos would be removed out of the River Mandovi by September 2015. With that date now fast approaching the Government has started through an advertisement released in all the news papers today a so called public consultation process to only fool the people. The Casinos are meant to be off shore and that is where they should be asked to relocate. Does the government have to be told the definition of off shore? While the BJP continues to milk the Casinos nothing will be done to relocate them. The people of Goa can read between the lines. The government should not underestimate the intelligence quotient of Goans who have been patiently enduring the manner in which the people are being taken for a ride. March 2017 is when the BJP will be shown its place for having betrayed on almost every issue the faith the people of Goa had reposed. While Caustic Soda (aka Lye) is NOT an Acid but a very strong Alkali, Floriano is right. It is very corrosive and one has to be careful with it. Considering that the Lye used might affect other matter and plants in the environment, I wonder if it is worth Trying a more gentle combination of Vinegar and Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) to do the needful. jc On 13 August 2015 at 00:58, Floriano Lobo floriano.l...@gmail.com wrote: Get a kg of caustic soda from Pankar, Mapusa. [Goanet] Mayem farmers: govt must force mining companies to pay compensation
-- Samir Umarye BICHOLIM: The Akhil Bhartiya Kisan Sabha, Mayem, has strongly demanded that the government force the mining companies to pay compensation to farmers, failing which they have threatened to block resumption of mining in the village. Addressing a press conference in the city, ABKS Mayem President Kamlakant Gadekar said that they have been fighting with the mining companies since last several years, for compensation. The farmers from Mayem have been given compensation in 2009 and 2010 for the silt that had entered the farms and rendered them useless,” Gadekar said adding “ since then the two companies operating in the village have not given any compensation to the farmers.” The ABKS had approached the Bicholim mamlatdar in 2012, but the mining company in 2013 appealed to the North Goa collector stating that there should be soil testing of the silt from the farms. After about a year the case was transferred to the Bicholim deputy collector. Today was the last day of hearing, but the farmers were in for a rude shock when they were told that the case was referred back to the collector. Threat to block mining If the issue is not resolved before the Ganesh Chaturthi, about 500 plus farmers who are affected by mining silt would not allow mining to resume in the village, Gadekar warned.
[Goanet] The friendly face of corruption in Goa (Devika Sequeira)
The friendly face of corruption in Goa Devika Sequeira devikaseque...@gmail.com Apart from the Congress' defence of Digambar Kamat, and the party's commitment to stand by its former chief minister in the Louis Berger accusations, there've been practically no sound bytes from the political class to either censure or applaud the police action against the two politicians. In Churchill Alemao's case, his legal team, family and hangers-on are the only ones who've been rallying round him, leaving the once weighty politician looking somewhat isolated. Some would argue that Alemao has only himself to blame for his current isolation. His most recent political sojourn had him jumping into -- of all parties -- the Trinamool Congress. That move, prompted by his peeve against the Congress party for not giving in to his demand to field his daughter Valanka for the Lok Sabha poll last year, defines Alemao's maverick three and half decades in politics which have been governed mostly by a self-serving agenda. 'Make me and my brother Joaquim ministers, or we'll bring down your government...'. 'Give Valanka the ticket, or I'll contest against your official candidate and help the BJP...' The Congress Party has been the worst casualty of this constant arm-twisting—and deservedly so, for bending over backward to accommodate him. Though Alemao is being implicated in the current payoffs case for his tenure in a Congress government, the party must be truly relieved it doesn't have to come to his defence as a party man. Perhaps it should thank Valanka Alemao for her overreaching political ambition. Churchill's closest supporters are clutching the hope that there might after all be a positive outcome to his current discomfiture and political low. The unfolding graft case, the manner of his midnight arrest and his being lodged in custody by the police could translate into a sympathy wave for him in the next election, they believe. While a more urban and educated voter might be repulsed by corruption, rural Goa -- constituencies like Benaulim, Navelim, Nuvem, Taleigao -- is often dismissive of it. There's probably some truth in this. How else does one explain the electoral successes of people like Mickky Pacheco, Babush Monserrate, Mauvin Godinho? Digambar Kamat and Churchill Alemao couldn't have been more unalike. Alemao's large personality comes with a grassroots appeal and charisma that has seen him often turn the tables on more educated politicians. Kamat, on the other hand, a backroom player, has used cunning, guile and astute compromise (his Brahmin genes, his critics would say) to get to where he is, and survive a whole term as chief minister. But both pride themselves on being accessible to their constituents and to the public at large. One can walk into Digambar's sitting room in Margao, just as one can with Churchill in Varca. The bonhomie that exudes from such accessibility can often blunt public perception of corruption in politics. This is no sinister Vyapam scandal where scores of witnesses and participants are being bumped off like skittles dropping off a bowling alley. This is the soft and friendly face of an elected representative who might have occasionally put his hand out behind our backs. It is often argued that graft is the necessary evil of politics in this country, and we just have to learn to live with it. But the biting fact is that it is political greed that has impeded development on every front in Goa, putting it on the irreversible path to ruination. It is why we will never resolve such a small matter as getting rid of our garbage, the wilful destruction of our beaches and the deliberate and tedious impediments to everyday living for common people. Worse yet is that worthless progeny of politicians have been brought up to believe that inducements are an entitlement of their political lineage. The corrosion does indeed run deep. The BJP which has been accused of putting the Goa Watergate case on overdrive to deflect attention from the far more serious Vyapam racket has been sitting smugly on the sidelines of the Louis Berger investigations. Its recent move to reward Mauvin Godinho -- who was dragged to the courts by former chief minister Manohar Parrikar over the multi-crore power rebate racket -- with the chairmanship of the South Goa Planning and Development Authority exposes the saffron party's hypocrisy on the issue of corruption. Who's to say Kamat and Alemao will not be absolved in the same cynical manner before the next election? There may actually be a rainbow at the end
[Goanet] Jamshedpur's Plastic Roads
Disposal of waste plastic is no longer a problem in the steel city with Jamshedpur Utility and Services Company (JUSCO) using bitumen technology on waste plastic, ranging from polybags to biscuit packets, for constructing roads. JUSCO, a 100 per cent subsidiary company of Tata Steel which maintains and provides municipal services in Tata command area of the city, has constructed 12-15 kms road in the steel city as well as Tata Steel Works besides widening 22 roads using the environment-friendly technology of utilising waste plastic. As far as we know, Jamshedpur is the only city in eastern India where bitumen technology (Dry Process) patented by Thiagarajar College of Engineering (TCE), Tirupparanku ram, Madurai, has been implemented on accumulated waste plastic for the first time, Gaurav Anand, Senior Manager (Quality Assurance) of JUSCO, said today.Claiming that there is no maintenance cost involved for the first five years, Anand, who is an environment engineer, said that for every stretch of such one km long and four metre wide road, one tonne of bitumen costing Rs 50,000 is saved. The use of bitumen has been reduced by 7 per cent ever since JUSCO began using waste plastic in road construction work, he said, adding that the quality and longevity of roads made of waste plastic-aggregate-bitumen was two times better than bitumen road.Describing plastic tar road as a new pathway, Pratyush Dandpat, Deputy Manager (Quality Assurance) of JUSCO, said that the technology turned out to be successful. Besides being water resistant, it has better binding property, higher softening point, can withstand high temperature and higher load, has lower penetration value, costs less as compared to bitumen road and has no toxic gas emission, Dandpat said. Though there is great demand for the technology, including from Chattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jharkhand governments, but we do not have any plan to commercialise it but to serve society. We have even received a request from Nigeria, which wants to replicate it in their country, Anand said. Due to the JUSCO initiative, the city will now have strong, durable, eco-friendly roads which will also relieve the residents from the ugly frightening sight of heaps of plastic waste!! !--#yiv7368645256 .yiv7368645256hmmessage P{margin:0px;padding:0px;}#yiv7368645256 body.yiv7368645256hmmessage{font-size:12pt;font-family:Calibri;}--

NEWS ANCHOR-CUM-PRINT MEDIA JOURNALIST ACCUSED OF SEXUAL HARASSMENT FOR SECOND TIME IN FOUR MONTHS By Mayabhushan Nagvenkar A top anchor working at a cable news channel, which also runs a popular newspaper, has been accused of sexual harassment, for the second time in the last four months. The victim, a part-time newsreader has complained to the management that she has been bombarded with sexually explicit content, both images and texts, by the very senior editorial staffer, who had in the past been accused of sexual harassment by a maid working in the same organisation. The victim has also accused the anchor and a senior print media journalist of demanding sexual favours. Not at liberty to name the media organisation, because a complaint has not yet been filed by the victim, but a meeting has been called at the news channel's office today evening to 'compromise' the matter. The sexual harassment complaint had been made to the management on Wednesday along with images of the explicit images and texts. The victim had been working at the news channel only for a few weeks. The accused had threatened to sack her if she did not respond to her overtures, she has said in her complaint. EOM

[Goanet] CASINOS MUST GO TO OFFSHORE
Regarding Casinos shifting from Mandovi river as three sites were suggested by the Parsekar Government and the suggestion are invited from the public selecting one of these three sites mentioned below, just to fool the people of Goa: 1) Mouth of River Mandovi 2) Aguada Bay 3) Two locations in River Zuari east and west of the bridge and river Chapora. Suggestion were asked to send to the Home Dept Secretary Porvorim within 15 days time. I have read the notice which appeared in Navhind Times dated 13.8.2015 The public as well as the writers are been telling the government all the time, that NO CASINOS should be seen at the Mandovi River as Goans does not wish to have them. Even if it is shifted to any of these sites/locations mentioned above, Goans will never tolerate and agree this proposal. Best thing is to shift them to OFFSHORE after the monsoon and never to come back again. [Goanet] Mumbai: Human Chain Protest against the proposed Coast Road on 15th Aug 2015
From: bcsabha.kal...@gmail.com To: From: bwra.ban...@gmail.com PRESS NOTEHUMAN CHAIN BY BANDRA AND JUHU-VERSOVA RESIDENTSTO PROTEST AGAINST COAST ROADON INDEPENDENCE DAY MORNING, 15 AUGUST 2015 Residents’ Associations of Bandra are going to hoist the National Flag on 15 August 2015 morning at10:30 am and follow it up with a human chain -- across Carter Road and Bandra Bandstand public promenades -- on Independence Day morning. They are also generating public awareness on the need to send objections to the Coast Road to the BMC before the27 August 2015 deadline. These seafront areas of Mumbai will be directly affected by the 35-km-long coast road from Nariman Point to Kandivali, which will cost a staggering Rs 12,000 crores, or Rs 340 crores per km, only some Rs 20 crores less per km than an overground Metro, which is a far better and equitable form of public transport, as distinct from a private highway solely for cars. A recent transport study by Lea Associates, an international consulting firm, showed that 52% of all trips in Mumbai are by foot. Of trips by all forms of motorised transport, just 5% are by car. Overall, only 2.2% of daily trips in Mumbai are by car. More than half of these are along the eastern and central parts of Mumbai. So less than 1% of daily trips will use the proposed Coast Road. · We say no to the coast road plan.· We strongly oppose this hideous road project.· We fight to save our dear Bandra public promenades, Juhu beach and our lives.· We say no to more roads and no to becoming the world’s most polluted city like Delhi· We will protect and enlarge our meagre open spaces.· We shall hold each other's hands to conserve our environment. [Goanet] Goanet -Re: Slippery moss et al
The caution by Jose and Mervyn on the use of chemicals to remove monsoon moss, should be heeded. The fumes that these chemicals give out, may affect our health, and also the plants in the vicinity. In addition to the moss, what I find more slippery is an almost invisible slime that coats, concrete surfaces, as well tarred roads and laeterite walkways. More than once I have slipped on this slime which is akin to slipping on ice in the winter in the colder countries. Someone had suggested using powdered bleach which also gives out noxious fumes. My solution has been touse a good old fashioned wire brush while covering one's nose and mouth, to scrub the moss, slime and pesky weeds that thrive during the rains. This is a time consuming and oneroustask, but highly effective. The only downside is that it may wear down the surfaces being scrubbed. Despite these travails, I love the monsoons in Goa !

Re: [Goanet] Alex's Acid or What do you do about slippery moss?
1: Floriano Lobo wrote: Get a kg of caustic soda from Pankar, Mapusa. Make a solution ( it is acidic so do not handle it with raw hands). sprinkle and brush it out. 2: Mervyn Lobo mervynal...@yahoo.ca wrote: Floriano,Caustic soda is an alkali. At this point, I would also suggest that you do a little reading on how acids and alkalis effect the human body and ones health COMMENT: While Floriano may have made a slip / error / typo by calling Caustic Soda an Acid instead of an Alkali, he was making a very, very valid and important precautionary point. Strong acids (like Muriatic Acid) and Strong alkalis (like Lye) are very corrosive - and should be handled with extreme care (just as Floriano has rightly cautioned us) As an aside, I am not sure that I would 'roll' my car tires/tyres over an area which has recently been doused with a strong acid or alkali.or even breath in that area. As mentioned earlier: I would first try a weak acid like Household Vinegar + Baking Soda jc
