[Goanet] Bandra

2017-05-19 Thread Marshall Mendonza
That was a very interesting article Eric. Thanks for enriching our
knowledge. However, I could not figure out one of the statements. viz. that
the local Christian population in Bandra were called 'East Indians" due to
their close relationship with the East India Company. Local Christians all
over Bombay, whether in Mazagaon or Andheri or Sahar or Kurla or Chembur
and even in Vasai (Bassein), Uttan, Bhayandar, Nala Sopara etc are all
generically called "East Indians'.

[Goanet] Someone Analyzed the Bible and Quran

2017-05-19 Thread Fidibus

Someone Analyzed the Bible and Quran to See Which is More Violent

/Sponsored Links/
byOrganic & Healthy

*Software engineer Tom Anderson had long heard individuals debate
whether or not terrorism was related to Islam being a fundamentally
violent religion - so he decided to look more closely.*

In particular, he used text analytics software he had developed to
compare the Bible and Quran, looking in particular at words categorized
in eight different categories: Anger, anticipation, disgust,
fear/anxiety, joy, sadness, surprise, and trust.

In a blog post,Anderson explains
: "The project was
inspired by the ongoing public debate around whether or not terrorism
connected with Islamic fundamentalism reflects something inherently and
distinctly violent about Islam compared to other major religions."

The analysis of all three books - the Old Testament, New Testament, and
Quran - took just two minutes.

An analysis into whether the Quran is more violent than the Bible found
killing and destruction occur more frequently in the Christian texts
than the Islamic.

The results? The bible scored much higher on anger and much lower on
trust than the Quran.

Further analysis found the Old Testament was more violent than the New
Testament, and more than twice as violent as the Quran.

As Andersonsummarized :
"Of the three texts, the content in the Old Testament appears to be the
most violent.

"Killing and destruction are referenced slightly more often in the New
Testament (2.8%) than in the Quran (2.1%), but the Old Testament clearly
leads—more than twice that of the Quran—in mentions of destruction and
killing (5.3%)."

However, he adds: "First, I want to make very clear that we have not set
out to prove or disprove that Islam is more violent than other religions.

"Moreover, we realize that the Old and New Testaments and the Quran are
neither the only literature in Islam, Christianity and Judaism, nor do
they constitute the sum of these religions’ teachings and protocols.

"I must also reemphasize that this analysis is superficial and the
findings are by no means intended to be conclusive. Ours is a 30,000-ft,
cursory view of three texts: the Quran and the Old and New Testaments,
respectively."

[Goanet] When Indian media blamed the Portuguese for a bridge collapse in Goa Like any good data entry operator, the scribe is typing out whatever is being fed by the administration.

2017-05-19 Thread Frederick FN Noronha फ्रेड्रिक नोरोन्या *فريدريك نورونيا
When Indian media blamed the Portuguese for a bridge collapse in Goa

Like any good data entry operator, the scribe is typing out whatever is
being fed by the administration.

Conspiracy theories are easy to build, especially when the atmosphere is so
conducive that it seems to be almost begging for it. It is like when
humidity is at its peak someone reporting rain is believed unquestioningly.
But what is ignored is that the high level of humidity can be indicative of
diametrically-opposing pieces of information.

High humidity makes it plausible for it to rain - so reports of rain must
be true

or

High humidity makes it plausible for it to rain - so untrue reports of rain
can easily be passed of as being true.

So the lacuna in the logic, that when humidity is high - rain is expected,
would be that the news of rain could be equally as true as untrue. Likewise
conspiracy theories flourish when the atmosphere is conducive, meaning a
theory has a 50 per cent chance of being baseless as half a chance of being
justified.

A bridge collapsed in Goa at around 6.30pm on Thursday, May 18, 2017... the
news began to hit newsrooms by 7.30pm or 8pm. The initial report coming in
sounded like this:

Goa: Around 50 people fall into river after footbridge collapses in South
Goa's Curchorem, rescue operations underway, more details awaited...
According to sources people had gathered near the river when one person was
attempting suicide. As people of area came to know about the suicide
attempt more people started gathering. However the bridge could not hold
and the bridge collapsed. Sources said that bridge is over decade old. The
rescue operation is underway. Several managed to swim out. The water level
was not very high. The incident took place around 6.30 in the evening.

With in a couple of hours, the narrative had changed: it was no longer
about a bridge that collapsed in Goa but about a Portuguese-era bridge that
had collapsed in Goa. Every report and every follow-up on the story began
with the words Portuguese-era bridge. The difference, to the uninitiated,
is so subtle that it goes unnoticed.

Mind games are at play because by the morning after the collapse, the idea
has been firmly but subtly planted in people's minds that the bridge was
from the Portuguese times - meaning - it was not built by India; it was
old; it is not the fault of the present administration and that it was
destined to fall.

The matter and blame has been beautifully deflected because ignored is the
fact that Goa ceased to be part of Portugal in 1960. 57 years the bridge
has been Indian, but when it collapsed it was the fault of its Portuguese
pedigree.

It is totally understandable, though certainly not justifiable, on the part
of the administration to try and get absolved of the mishap. The
administration, in this case in the form of Assistant Information Officer
Siddhesh Samant of the Goa government, said: "A person had attempted
suicide in the river. The local fire brigade reached the spot and rescue
operation was going on. Locals came in numbers to watch the rescue
operation... however they climbed the foot bridge which is Portuguese era
old. It had been declared dilapidated and not in use for several years. At
around 6.30 the foot bridge collapsed when the rescue operation was going
on and all the people fell in the river."

It is the journalist's job to sift through the material and report events
objectively. Most of the reports in print and almost all reports on TV
began with the line that a Portuguese-era bridge has collapsed. The real
news, in this instance, was that a bridge in Goa had collapsed killing one
and injuring several others.

The age and pedigree of the bridge comes as a secondary point to be taken
up after the main thrust of the news and towards the end of the report
questions needed to be asked as to why so unstable an old bridge, which, as
per the administration's own admission, was declared dilapidated, was still
left standing?

The real news, in this instance, was that a bridge in Goa had collapsed
killing one and injuring several others.Photo: AP

Many people, if many people do read this, would wonder why such a big deal
is being made out of such a small innocuous event? The event may certainly
be innocuous because with a population of a billion and a quarter, in a
country that records more than 22,500 deaths every day, one additional
death and one old collapsed bridge is hardly of any consequence, but like
in any murder investigation the emphasis has to be on intent.

The intent in this case is to mislead and to deflect, the intent is to
fudge understanding — to keep the public from trying to or wanting to look
beyond the obvious. The ploy on the part of the dispensation is working
because the journalists and the editors of news organisations have stopped
thinking.

Like any good data entry operator, the journalist is typing out whatever is
being fed by the administration. No questions are being asked as the media

[Goanet] Bandra

2017-05-19 Thread eric pinto

: Bandra Of The Past

This is culled from various sources and received via email. Makes interesting
reading.

Bandra was a tiny fishing village inhabited by the Koli fishermen. There were
also farmers.
It was acquired by the British East India Company even while the rest of Bombay
belonged to the Portuguese.
There was a 18 hole golf course in Bandra and it was called Danda Green with an
English style Club House on the top of the hill, surrounded by trees.
Membership was only for the British who lived in Pali Hill. Each cottage had a
stable for horses.

Bandra consisted of villages Sherly, Malla, Rajan, Kantwady, Waroda, Ranwar,
Boran and Pali besides Chuim. Ranwar also had a tennis court and the famous
Ranwar Club famous for Christmas and New Year eve dances.
Most of the elder of Bandra worked for the East India Company and hence called
East Indians. In the Bandra of the forties and before, large cottages with
large gardens were available for rent at Rs 30/- a month. Marriages were held
with an 8 day celebration from Thursday to Thursday for a Sunday wedding and
the whole village was invited.

Thursday was the pig slaughter day and Friday to make pappads for drinks,
Saturday to make fugias and bring water from the village well to bathe the
bride or groom. Sunday was the wedding ceremony and long reception.
Monday was day of rest and to finish remaining food and on Tuesday the feet of
guests were washed in exchange for cash. Then farewell dinner on Wed and guests
left on Thursday by which time honeymoon was over.

Tradition has it that the suburb was originally known as Vandra or Ape as it
was the home of monkeys, then Bandor as the Portuguese called it in 1505, then
called Bandera, Bandura, Bandore, Pandara, Bandorah, Bandara and finally Bandra
till a railway sign board finalized it at the end of the last century.
Salsette was originally separated by a tidal creek which Portuguese called
Bandora creek. English changed it to Mahim creek.

Bandra had 2 hills, the Mount Mary hill and the Pail hill. On 12th Apr 1867 the
first railway service was inaugurated of one train per day between Virar and
Bombay .
Bandra at one time was peopled mainly by East Indians (original residents of
Bombay Salsette, Bassein, and Thana ), a few Goans and Manglorian immigrants,
Parsis, Muslims, Europeans and Hindu Kolis. Till as late as the 30's Bandra had
only one bus service from Pali Naka, Hill road to the Rly stn. Other people
just walked to the nearest Rly stn. After World War II the building boom
started to accommodate immigrants.

The five oldest roads in Bandra are: Godbunder Rd , originally ran from Mahim
causeway, then to skirt Bazaar Rd , went past the Bandra talab and continued to
Godbunder. The road was later made straight by cutting through the talab.
Bazaar Rd began at Godbunder Rd opposite the mosque and ran through the market
keeping close to the
coast which is now the reclamation.
Hill Rd
starting fm stn went through middle of Bandra town, past St Andrews to
terminate at the foot of the Mount near Mehboob studio. Pali Rd began at St
Peters cut through Pali village till Danda.
BJ Rd runs from St Andrews to Lands End, was built by Byramjee Jeejebhoy and
opened to public in 1878.

There are over 150 crosses at various places. Many crosses were built to ward
off the plague epidemic (1896-1906).The oldest is the one relocated in St
Andrew's church compound. Stands 17ft high and made of a single stone. It was
originally in the Jesuit seminary of St
Anne built in 1610. The bldg was destroyed in 1739 and the cross was relocated
to St Andrews church. The surface is carved all
over with 39 emblems of the passion of Christ.

Bazaar Rd is only 2 km long but houses a Jain temple, Ram mandir, Hanuman
temple, Khoja mosque, Christian chapel and a Sikh gurduwara.
Main roads in Bandra Perry, Carter, Bullock, Kane, and Bates were named after
British collectors and magistrates. Mr Carter was collector in 1924 and Mr
Bullock was the Chief Magistrate.
Christians in Bandra are mostly of the Koli, Bhandari and Kunbi castes.
The architect of Mount Mary 's church was a Bombay architect Shahpoorjee
Chandabhoy. The basilica was built in 1904 at a cost of Rs.1 lakh. Also the
first time a non catholic was asked to build the church. It was built to serve
the garrison posted at Castella de Aguada-the fort at Land's End road. It was
destroyed in a fire in 1739 and rebuilt in 1761, the year marking beginning of
Bandra feast as it is
celebrated today.

The walls enclosing the compound of St Andrew's church was built by a Parsi,
Manockjee Sorabjee Ashburner in 1862. It is recorded on a slab on the main gate
of the enclosure. In 1879, Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy constructed a flight of steps
from foot of Mt Mary hill to north side of church known as the Degrados de
Bomanjee (steps of Bomanjee).
St Stanislaus started in 1863 as a 'Native Boy's orphanage' became a high

ST INEZ CREEK - FEARS FOR AN EPIDEMIC

By: Stephen Dias, Dona Paula

The restoration of the St Inez Creek lies primarily in the prevention of
the causes of pollution. The most important aspect is to be able to stop
with immediate affect discharge of sewage from all the tenements bordering
the St. Inez Creek which Sidharth took in hand while he was MLA of Panjim,
and did not materialized his dreams since he resigned to give away his seat
to Parrikar for by-election. He also said that the sewage lines have to be
provided to the houses along the creek so as to immediately decrease the
amount of pollution of the creek which we agreed.

Two years back, the condition of the creek was much better, the sheer
negligence by the concerned authorities have led to this pathetic condition
of the creek with authorities trying to blame each other of their
responsibilities towards maintaining the hygiene of the creek. Action
needs to be taken immediately so as to avert a major health outbreak due to
water borne diseases like malaria, dengue and chikunguniya. It is a sorry
state of affair to be given to know that an entire family of an ex-Mayor
and ex-councilor of CCP and other nearby families has been affected by
chickunguniya . The blame game has to stop and immediate measures taken to
avert an epidemic of malaria, dengue, chikunguniya and water borne diseases.

Before commencing work on the bridge over the St Inez creek off Caculo
island to Campal, it was the duty of the GSIDC to at least clean the
surface of the water in the creek which is almost stagnant and then conduct
this work scientifically by releasing into the river. Also the cleaned
surface should have been treated by spraying anti-malarial larvae
disinfectant to prevent breading of mosquitoes. To excavate the accumulated
sewage in the creek, first attempt have to be made to find a suitable
dumping pit or reservoir for the trash and make sure there is no seepage to
the ground water contamination. END

Sir,
If there is a possibility of oil spill from the tilted dry-dock, that vasts
areas of the sea n river coast could be affected, then it is incumpumbent
on GSPCB to cordon off the floating drydock with float barrier to contain
such an oil spill so that it may be cleaned through spray coagulants and
mopping up with tissue paper. Ironically, Goa is a sitting duck for any

[Goanet] GA UK

2017-05-19 Thread Eugene Correia
Glorious past, present tense, uncertain future
Goan Association has battled crisis before, and should overcome current one
by Eugene Correia

Last year, the Goan Overseas Association (UK) passed its half-century mark in
its journey which has seen many ups and downs. Inaugurated in 1966, the
memories of the past years are well captured in the souvenir released to mark
the momentous occasion.

In 1977, a new name, Goan Association (UK) was adopted, though retaining the
acronym, GOA, as its trading name. Many other Goan bodies have mushroomed, as
the diaspora community has grown with the influx of the Portuguese-passport
holders. Shockingly, it hasn’t translated into increase the GA member. In fact,
the GA membership has decreased and, therefore, it’s no surprise that the GOA
is embarrassed to release the figure.

The GA has been in crisis before as it’s facing one now over the resignation of
some of its directors and general secretary. No official explanation is
forthcoming. Even those who resigned have remained silent. A conspiracy of
silence prevails in the management of the association. The GA has been to court
to sort out legal issues and confrontations at least six times in its history,
according to someone in the know.

Some Goan and Manglorean Catholics, who made a trip to neighbouring countries
under the auspices of the Overseas Student Catholic Organisation, felt the need
for a Goan association. The souvenir describes the failed attempt as, “That
freshly-sprung idea of a Goan association wilted no sooner it had come about.”
This failure in 1962 made a handful of Goans to take up the challenge again two
years later, and the East African Catholic Society (EACS) was born. A seed was
sown.

The pair of Camillo de Souza and Amorito Nazareth played leadership roles in
setting up EACS. The far-sightedness and vision of these two, who were well
versed in the club life of Goans in East Africa, resulted in formalizing the
idea that shaped the arrival of GOA.

As one of its objectives, the GA stated that it would like to see its “elders
as members of parliament” and “our part fully in the life of the country.” They
may not be “elders” or members of GA, but there are three Goans MPs, namely the
long-serving brother-and-sister team of Keith and Valerie Vaz, and newcomer
Suella Fernandes. Keith and Valerie’s mother, Merlyn Vaz, was a councillor, and
today Rabi Martins sits as a councillor in Watford.

Playing a vital role in the formative years of GA, Martins showed his penchant
for politics when, writing in the association newsletter in 1975, he forcefully
stated, “What then is the future of the association? Not much, unless the
members awaken immediately to the need to reorganise our body into a radical
political body capable of representing the Goan community in the country.”
Martins headed a Standing Committee on Race Relations and Immigration (SCORR).
As a representative bod, its impact on issues such as immigration, welfare, and
housing is said to have been “minimal.” The GA hasn’t transformed itself into
Martins’ dream and, perhaps, the view of being a “radical political body” is no
longer valid.

No doubt that Goans who came in large numbers from the liberating East African
nations as well as those forced to leave their lands because of political
upheaval, particularly Uganda in 1972, boosted the numbers of Goans in UK.
Goans in the new land wanted to replicate the social life enjoyed by them in
the East African nations that they left behind. The urge to socialize, have
dances and entertainment fuelled the desire to have an association and,
gradually, for a clubhouse of its own.

The reality of owning a piece of land came in September, 1983, when the Goan
Association Sports and Social Club was declared open at Beckenham, Kent. The
playing fields were acquired, making the premises the jewel of the association.
The grounds helped in providing youngsters with facilities to horn their
sporting skills, as well as provide keen matches, particularly in cricket and
field hockey. Few dedicated members worked hard to make the dream come true. A
decade and half later, the dream went up in flames. The clubhouse was burned
down by an arson attack, and, later, the insurance claim was settled, providing
the GOA money to invest in flats.

The will to keep the cultural spirit going was strong. In 1984 came SCOGO
(Standing Committee of Goan Organizations), the brainchild of Marcus D’Souza, a
founding member of the GOA. The new organisation was the coming together of
village associations. One year later, it held its first Goan Exhibition &
Festival. With rising number of Goans, the festival too grew in scope. To
accommodate the crowds, the festival was moved to a bigger arena in 2011, and
today it has become a massive celebration, drawing nearly 20,000 people, of
Goenkarpon, the much-used word in Goa today, in all its forms. But surprising,
profits were low.

He has a healthy phobia for those who work for the Dept of Justice - as he

It now looks like the show piece of the Republican campaign - the Trump

In this audio recording, Dr Celsa Pinto talks about how she entered the
strange field of Indo-Portuguese history (about which she had only a hazy
idea to start with), brushed up her Portuguese-language skills, and spent
the last three decades in the field. Productively and being able to write
quite a few useful books on the subject. Also in this recording: Dr
Nandkumar Kamat (on Panjim, an extract) and campaigner-councillor Patricia
Pinto. Celsa Pinto's talk starts at around 11:00 mins.
