2017-07-07 Thread Roland Francis
Interesting article on Mrs Fernandes, Eric.

Unlike Mervyn Maciel's and Patrice Riemens's experiences, mine was not so
positive with her product.

Since a variety of other makers was available to me both in Bombay and in the
Gulf with the brinjal, lime, mango and mixed pickle varieties, the only
products I used from Fernandes pickles was the balchao. On a scale of one to
ten, hers was no more than a four, but when no other was available in the
stores, I used to buy it. The packaging was unattractive, sometimes leaky and
of little taste. Dried shrimp were used (compared to non-commercial balchaos
using fresh shrimp. But her products ruled in the days when she had no
competition.

Today in Canada medium sized Indian grocery stores carry no less than 20 brands
manufactured mostly in Maharashtra, Goa and Gujarat and even the Pathaks brand
from the UK. The Goan ones include fish pickles like molho, balchao and parra.
All come well packaged and attractive to the eye, though the sodium content
varies considerably. Some will be 300mg for a 50g portion while the other
extreme owns up to 900mg for a 10g portion, the latter enough to keep your
family doctor awake at nights.

The real gourmet pickles that tickle the palate are:
Prawn balchao made in Salcete Catholic homes.
Stuffed mango masala miscut made by Saraswat families in Margao.
Aachar made in the Vidarbha and Konkan regions of Maharashtra and even by a
small spice seller in Bombay's Lalbaugh that eventually became the famous
Bedekars pickle factory.
Punjabi homemakers in Toronto who make carrot, chilli and onion pickles which
they sell unbranded for a song to the Indian grocery who then marks it up
considerably.

The draw revealed that hosts India will take on USA in their opening match of

Perhaps the most intriguing quartet of teams can be found in Group D, where
FIFA tournament debutants Niger were drawn with Korea DPR, Brazil, and Spain.

The draw ceremony was held in the presence of Sunil Gulati, FIFA Council

One of the highlights of the ceremony was the performance of the tournament's

*THERE IS NOTHING IMPOSSIBLE IN FOOTBALL: MATOS*

*AIFF Media Team*

*MUMBAI: *Moments after India were drawn in the Group A of the FIFA U-17
World Cup 2017 India alongside United States of America, Colombia and
Ghana, Head Coach Luis Norton de Matos said, “that India are ready to make
an impression in the FIFA U-17 World Cup.”

“In Football, the word impossible does not exist and we are going to fight
in every game, in every moment to give it our best on the pitch,” he said.

“The boys are not afraid of any team and that is a very positive notion. If
we have 20 percent chance of winning a game, we will ensure that we make it
a cent percent,” Matos added.

India will clash against USA in their opening match of the FIFA U-17 World
Cup India 2017 on October 06, 2017 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in the
Capital, before taking on Colombia on October 09 and Ghana on October 12
respectively.

AIFF President Mr. Praful Patel sitting besides Matos said: “All games
which India play will have a large audience and we will ensure to give
India all the support it can get from the fans.”

“The AIFF along with the Government of India will ensure that maximum
number of schools and colleges come over to the Stadium to cheer for the
Nation,” Mr. Patel stated.

Reflecting on India’s opponents in the FIFA U-17 World Cup Matos said, “USA
have only missed one FIFA World Cup in this category and they will pose a
tough challenge for us, we have to be on our toes to give them a tough
fight.”

“The Teams in the FIFA U-17 World Cup will have at least 10 years of
experience but we are not afraid to play our game. All the three teams we
will face will be very strong”

“Colombia are one of the best South American teams and they will be very
tough and very strong on the pitch. So will be USA and Ghana,” Matos
reflected.

Indian U-17 Team defender Sanjeev Stalin thanked AIFF for giving them the
opportunity to play in a World Cup.

“To play a FIFA World Cup is a moment which a Player reveres all his life,”
Stalin pronounced. “I need to thank the AIFF for bringing the World Cup to
India and giving us an opportunity to play in the Tournament,” he added.

The Indian U-17 World Cup Squad had been on an exposure trip to Europe and
had faced National Teams of Serbia, Macedonia and Hungary, which according
to Coach Matos “aided in the development of the Team, both physically and
technically.”

“The most important thing right now is to prepare for the future and work
for the development of football in the country”

“It is possible to play against any team in World Football all you need is
support from the fans and time to develop as a team,” he informed.

*GROUP A: *India, USA, Colombia, Ghana

*India’s fixtures in the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2017 India:*

*October 06: *India vs USA

*October 09: *India vs Colombia

... and it is from reading Salman Rushdie's Midnight Children that I got
the inspiration to make pickles myself.

A further anecdote: one day, back in the previous millenium, the former
captain of SCI's passenger ship TSS Nancowry came to my house. I let him
see a small jar of pickles I had just made, and he said "oh yeah, you, a
non-Indian, think you can make pickles?". Then I went shopping for
dinner, when I came back, the jar was empty. "Quite good actually", he
declared. Captain (...) Singh must have been very hungry ...

Gallery Gitanjali is Delighted to Announce *Exploring Memory : Personal and

Alakananda Nag and BIND Collective* This Exhibition will be open for the
public from 12th July 2017 5.00 pm to 26th July 2017 6.00 pm.

About The Exhibition :

This selection of photo books focuses on artists exploring memory and the
interweaving of its personal and collective dimensions.

In any society, individuals have always found their own identity and
trajectory shaped by the hazards of politics, conflict and war. The
accounts emanating from these experiences often embody the interplay
between personal remembrances and the collective consciousness projected by
traditions, myths and contemporary media representations.

The works presented here offer new paths of documenting events and ponders
the power memory has over photography. The authors take us through a myriad
of forms of expression, from blurring the line between documentary and
fiction to revisiting existing narratives ; from discovering personal and
scientific archives to exploring mythology through a contemporary lens.
This BINDbox will hold landscapes, objects and chronicles from around the
world serving as testimonials to historical events.

[Goanet] Modi Costa Bhai-Bhai (Times of India, 07/7/2017)

2017-07-07 Thread V M
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/modi-costa-bhai-bhai/articleshow/59479980.cms

Major stakes for Goa in last week's historic diplomatic breakthrough,
when Prime Minister Narendra Modi became the first Indian head of
state to visit Portugal for a bilateral trip (Atal Bihari Vajpayee
briefly stopped over in 2000 to attend a European Union conference).
New ground was broken in multiple ways for both countries, most
remarkably when Modi handed his counterpart, Antonio Costa, his
official Overseas Citizen of India card, saying "Prime Minister Costa
represents the best of the Indian diaspora across the world."

The evident personal warmth between the European and Indian prime
ministers heralds a stunning twist to the very long history that
connects Portugal and India with Goa its centrepiece. Less than six
decades have expired since Jawaharlal Nehru authorised the military
takeover of the last enclave of European colonialism in the
subcontinent, saying "Goa is an ugly pimple on the fair face of
India." It was a crushing blow for the dictator, Salazar, whose final
orders (thankfully disobeyed) were to destroy the state's
infrastructure, and fight till the last Portuguese soldier was
sacrificed.

It was only after Portugal itself was liberated from authoritarianism
by the whirlwind 1974 Carnation Revolution that a slow rapprochement
with India could begin. That connection has now risen to an altogether
unforeseen degree of partnership, thanks to the rise of Antonio Costa,
in tandem with Narendra Modi's avid pursuit of new diplomatic
engagements.

Carnegie India's Constantino Xavier explains, "For India, the need to
balance China means that it must craft tailored strategies for small
states like Portugal, in order to explore its advantage in Africa and
the Portuguese-speaking world. This is Modi's new 'niche diplomacy'
reaching out to small states that have heretofore been absent from
Delhi's foreign policy horizon."

It is hard to predict how personal chemistry will spark on the
international stage. On paper, it might seem that the committed
socialist Costa would not have much in common with corporate-friendly
rightist Modi. But the two men have clearly hit it off, beaming with
evident pleasure in each other's company. It is understood they speak
freely with each other in accented English, without the inconvenience
of interpreters. But it's not just words, in Antonio Costa the Indian
prime minister has finally met his equal as champion hugger. The two
men clinch often, with feeling.

Of course these individual sparks only matter because India and
Portugal have powerful allied interests. India needs to build strong
ties with the EU to maintain vital economic growth - and Portugal
under Costa is one readymade bridge to help that happen. The flip side
of the equation is equally compelling. Carnegie's Xavier says,
"Portugal's interest is to attract Indian investments in order to
overcome years of recession, and an economy that remains structurally
unable to compete with the new emerging powers." Thus, the highly
skilled Modi and Costa are only recognising the obvious. Huge
advantages could accrue to their countries - and their own political
careers - via close 21st century ties between Delhi and Lisbon.

In many ways, this new chapter in Indo-Portuguese relations is long
overdue, because it is being built anew on such tenacious roots. Goa
is living evidence of the consequential impact of 451 years of
Lusitanian presence in India, which generated a beautiful and unique
syncretic culture with profound expression in music, architecture,
cuisine and the arts. And Portugal itself was entirely remade in
contact with India, an experience that still throbs at the very heart
of its national identity. The greatest national heroes, Vasco da Gama
and Luis de Camoes, both gained their reputations due to India's
centrality in the 'Age of Discoveries'.

Even as New Delhi and Lisbon accelerate into a brave new world of
close ties, there is the possibility Goa will be left outside, despite
every advantage and immense suitability, as the locus for bilateral
co-operation. This is because of understandable ambivalence and unease
from Goans who can easily recall the considerable negative effects of
Portuguese colonial dictatorship in their homeland. Many freedom
fighters are still alive, who suffered jail and vicious beatings in
retaliation for brave acts of conscience. Their sacrifices deserve
lasting respect and recognition, and no one should take them for
granted

But times do change, and eventually, so can nations. Here it is
important to note the prime minister of Portugal's father, the
ferociously anti-colonial (and Goa's own) novelist Orlando da Costa
was himself repeatedly arrested and jailed by the Salazar government.
This is a reminder that the country which jailed him is quite
different from the country that voted his son into power. The Konkani
aphorism 'Te poder gele, ani te unde gele' is highly apt here.
