the population is.

Death: Elsie Maciel, wife of Goanetter Mervyn Maciel

Died last weekend at (April 10, 2020) in Britain at Sutton,
in Surrey.  She was ailing for awhile.  She earlier lived in
the the NFD, Kenya, and their life there is featured in the
books of her husband.  Was wife of Mervyn Maciel (for 68
years), mother of Clyde/Marguerite, Andrew/Pam, Josey,
Pollyanna/Geoff.  Grandma of Matthew, Elize, Jordan, April,
Aliya, Yakira, Thomas & Henry and great-grandmother of
Dusharn.  She passed away at Crossways Nursing Home, Sutton.

329 coronavirus cases so far...  A statement released by
Costa Diadema said: "To date, several attempts made with
different solutions have not had a positive outcome with the
Indian authorities."  On April 10, Dammu Ravi, an
official with India's Ministry of External Affairs, said the
return of Indians stranded abroad is "still a work in

Are we talking here about Goanna ?
As all Goanet readers are fully aware, more specifically from our Southern
Continent, that Goanna is reptile found in Australia and South East Asia of
the Veranus species. Bats, pangolins and goannas may be repositories of
corona viruses, but not Goa or for that matter Goans to be labelled as  "
Goanvirus".
It simply does disservice to Goa and to all Goans. It may serve all
humanity well if we reign in our flights of imagination.

Sometime two years or so I purchased on Being A Goan Christian. The
Politics of Identity, Rift and Synthesis.  Catchy title and I have no idea
how I forgot it in my room in Quepem.  It is an easy to read book double
spaced and all that. The author is Father Victor Ferrao.  It is as if this
Philosopher Priest was reading our minds



The Preface was written by Dr Thedore Mascarenhas SFX, (Not a relative)
What is very important was that he in in the Pontifical Council for Culture
in the Vatican (the smallest and probably power ful State in the World.
Please don’t, ask me like one of the Russian Presidents’, how big is his
Army !!



Why is patient Asolfo so excited.  The Contents only 6 chapters cover 86
pages. Some are long some brief.

This book is not written by Catholic Priest with no reference to the laity.
The reference stretches all the way from Toronto to Near and remote
villages in Goa. Even our dear friend Frederick Noronoha is mention as is
Hartman.  If a new edition should come out it badly needs and *Index* .  I
could even volunteer to do it. I do read foot notes some of them are long.
On page 55 the footnote is 30 lines approximately 450 words



OK Vivian you were henind the move for me to head the Commission. I see
Nyet because these fellows are incredibly good.  There is room for hundreds
of us to participate but lets not be enslaved that Christianity is a
western religion.  There is a footnote about St Thomas and Bartholomew .

The recent advisory issued by the Goa Police on social media posts
including Whatsapp is conveniently and deviously misconstrued by some.

That police advisory very rightly says that fake news, hate speech or
misinformation should not be posted on Whatsapp groups and to also not
forward such news without verifying the same. The advisory further
correctly says not to share any content that is violent, pornographic and
discriminative against any religion or community. These are infact
commonsense fundamentals that anyone using social media should strictly
adhere to at all times.

Instead of deleting any posts that are objectionable, some Whatsapp group
Admins while sneakily taking shelter of that police Advisory have changed
the settings of the group to only allow Admins to post which is violative
of Freedom of speech. The Admin is either conniving with the establishment
to suppress the voices of the group members or they are possibly morons
wrongly interpreting the police Advisory. If the Admin is incompetent to
manage the group, winding it up would be the right option.

Whether on COVID-19 or any other issue that concerns society we all are
entitled to fairly express our opinion and suggestions if any. Freedom of
Speech and Expression is fundamental to a democracy while a free and
fearless Press is also sacrosanct. The power to dissent and the right to
hold a different viewpoint is vital to the very functioning of democracy.
Everyone needs to take personal responsibility for what they write and not
allow any misinterpretation on social media to persist.

Ironically in the run up to the 2014 Lok Sabha elections the BJP made
extensive use of the RTI Act and social media to ride to power. But once in
the saddle they find the social media a stumbling block in masking and
covering up the follies of the faltering government.

Social media has transformed and drastically enhanced our power to
communicate instantly with the world. Through Whatsapp, Twitter, the
various groups on Facebook besides other global networking sites that I am
enrolled with, I am able to communicate within minutes by sharing a message
or a thought with lakhs of people worldwide while leaving it to anyone who
differs to express his own point of view.

Social media is not about an exploitation of technology but service to
community. It engages and drives peoples’ minds literally. In this
technological age we don’t have a choice on whether we DO social media; the
question is how well we do it. Thank you Social Media. It’s an amazing
world!
