Matthew 19:23-24

23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Amen, I say to you, it will be hard
for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven.

24 Again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of
a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

By the way, couldn't help noticing this, the entire of Portugal has fewer
Covid cases each day than Goa itself!

TODAY'S PUBLICO:

Covid-19. More than 300 people "potentially involved" in the Mora outbreak
- which may have reached Montemor-o-Novo

Another death, 132 infections and 103 recovered in Portugal. China approves
patent for vaccine that can "be mass produced in a short period of time".
There are more than 21 million confirmed cases worldwide and 13 million
have already been recovered. India has exceeded the 50,000 deaths caused by
the new coronavirus.

Marcos Gomes Catao was a lovely person, I liked his stories about Africa.
Having come to Goa as a very young person my memories are usually those of
other people. So Marcos regaled me with so many stories and anecdotes.

I will miss his very optimistic attitude, his infectious energy and of
course his jokes. I am glad I got in touch with him.

My deepest condolences to his wife Jean and his children.

Just one of his pieces can be read on my Blog @

[Goanet] GOA RAVE PARTIES

2020-08-17 Thread John Eric Gomes
POLICE UNABLE PREVENT RAVE PARTIES EVEN DURING COVID DANGER
Despit the scuffle at a party held in Arpora earlier this month, where
reportedly only the caretaker of the private villa was booked, presumably due
to the influence of the participants, another rave party was held with 3 women
foreign nationals, 23 including a former bollywood actor participants and drugs
worth 9 lakhs were ceased at Vagator! These are not all outsiders but many of
our youth taking part with possibility of violence and perhaps leading to other
illegal activities! Such illegal activity is common knowledge to most residents
and police in the Calangute belt since long back. The present DGP M.K.Meena
says police are monitoring, took immediate action as soon as they received
information etc. The question is why has not these drug related activities been
stamped out to date? Why is there no deterrent action with intelligence, police
informers etc to prevent this, especially during Covid rules in
force?Politicians keep blaming each other and influential people, the law and
the police are unable to stop this menace in public interest. Says a lot for
present state of affairs!

[Goanet] Aspects of Life in the Goa of Yore: The First Mass (Marcos Gomes-Catao)

2020-08-17 Thread Bernado Colaco
RIP Sr. Marcos Gomes-Catao. He would personally share his poems and articles
about Goa since 2016. Here is one on Calangute:
Ode to CalanguteOf the 40’s
The shimmering landscape of BAGA far awayAlmost lost in the curve of the baySo
recalls a picturesque MONET tableau

HAIL! Brightest Belle  of all GOAN shores.Manifold the variety of your
folks:That old lady seeking solace for her rheumatismRubs shoulders with the
matron eyeing lasses for her lad,And yonder comely damsel in seeming
distressVain looks for the philanderer faithlessTo whom last year  her heart
she pledgedWhereas the svelte demoiselle from KarachiBanters her beaux with
coquetish repartee.
HAIL! Fairest of all GOAN shoresIn the quiet of your serene eveningsThe soft
caressing whisper of the windRustling through your swaying palmsWorks like a
potent, soothing balmAs dulcet sounds float in the air:“Crying Suzanna” or
“Darling Clementine”,“Coming down the mountains” or othersWhich the virtuoso
coaxes from his guitarTo the accompanying bystanders' delight.
HAIL!B rlightest Belle of all GOAN shoresBehind trellised screens in the
balconyOf the palm-thatched hoary innThe loud tittle-tattle of jaunty
ramblersDowning “St.PAULI” 2 or a swig of “MACIEIRA” 3,With Africanders
clinging to their Scotcha,Rises into the depths of the eveningAs raucous voices
join in with 'mando'To the accords of violin and 'gumot'4
HAIL! Fairest of all GOAN shores.Time passes taking with it all we love.Is it
alright to have a moment's regretThat the magnificent old pageantIs now subdued
by monstrous cement boxesAnd the old graciousness replaced by obnoxiousnessOf
gauche 'outsider “nouveau riches”And jobless dregs of Western society?
HAIL! Brightest Belle of all GOAN shores. How they have killed the core of your
soulBringing to mind those oracular wordsOf the song   we sang not too long
ago:“Bye, beauteous, gracious shoresAdieu, land of my loveWhat aching nostalgia
thou leavestIn the deepest recesses of my heart”.5

[Goanet] In the seventies we lost our play area

2020-08-17 Thread Bernado Colaco
In the early seventies Goa,Daman and Diu witnessed the sudden death of its
first chief minister Dayananda Balcrisna Bandodcar under the new rule (1961).
This CM was at the forefront of the Maharastra wadi Gomantak party and was
seeking the merger of Goa with its northern neighbour Maharastra, which
fortunately did not happen. He was famous among the bahujan samaj or the
downtrodden from the novas conquistas.
After his death they built a memorial for him at the Gaspar Dias or Miramar
beach. For many years the taxpayers had to pay for the policemen who used to
keep vigil at the memorial around the clock. As 12 years old this area was our
playground. It had a rocket slide, see saws and what we called a jantar mantar
in fact was a maze and a giant fish. Unfortunately one fine evening  we saw the
destruction of the jantar mantar and the end of fun in that playing area.
If Aires Rodrigues catagorizes Bandodcar as a great leader, one wonders why
till today Goa lies in third world. Just yesterday tried to make phone
call(landline) to Goa but the calls were not going through. I heard that the
linesman were holding the wires (poor chap) as he tried to connect the calls.
