[Goanet-News] BBC: The orphans of Angola's secret massacre seek the truth

2020-09-08 Thread Frederick Noronha
A massacre in Angola that followed a split in the governing MPLA party not
long after independence has been shrouded in secrecy and fear for more than
four decades. But some of those affected are coming together to demand
answers and have been speaking to the BBC's Mary Harper, some for the first
time in public.
"My parents were last seen walking into the Ministry of Defence, hand in
hand."
That was more than 40 years ago, when João Ernesto Van Dunem was a
three-month-old baby. He never saw his mother and father again.
He does not know where or how they were killed. He does not know where they
are buried.
His parents - José Van Dunem, 27, and Sita Valles, 26 - together with other
young Angolans, had accused the ruling elite of prioritising personal
wealth and power over the good of the country.
IMAGE COPYRIGHTVAN DUNEM FAMILY
image captionJoão Ernesto Van Dunem was three months old when his parents
disappeared
José Van Dunem, who was a senior military official, and a fellow MPLA
central committee member, Nito Alves, who had been a government minister,
led the criticism from within. This led to their expulsion.
There are many versions of what happened next.
The authorities accused what they described as the "fractionistas" or
"splitters" of staging an attempted coup on 27 May 1977.
Members of the group said they did no such thing; rather they had organised
a mass demonstration and a takeover of the radio station to call people on
to the streets of the capital, Luanda, in order to pressurise President
António Agostinho Neto to clean up his government.
IMAGE COPYRIGHTGETTY IMAGES
image captionPresident Neto, who had a close relationship with Fidel
Castro, used Cuban troops during the purge
The result was bloodshed.
Mr Neto called in loyal sections of the army, supported by Cuban troops,
and the massacre began.
Thousands, including many of the country's young intellectuals and party
activists, were imprisoned, tortured and killed.
Those in authority at the time, including Defence Minister Gen Henrique
Teles Carreira, known as Iko Carreira, put the number at 300.
Amnesty International says 30,000 died in the purge. Some say as many as
90,000 were killed.

 Hello,

What baffles me is that even if one or more were outraged at the violence in
daylight, how exactly does anyone respond against persons with a gun and knife
(knives) and risk being implicated despite being innocent helpers?
Here we have Mao's philosophy being played out in broad daylight, "power

Another recent example has been Sri Lanka where the rebel group LTTE first
completely eliminated other groups also fighting the same cause of Tamil
autonomy in a huge purge of fellow Tamils.

On the other side the Sinhala Rajapakshas did a similar thing. Ending in
victory they became Sr Lanka’s “old crocodiles” tolerating no dissent
whether from the Tamils or their own kind, the Singhalese.

Re: [Goanet] [Goanet-News] Dinesh D'Souza on Kamala Harris

2020-09-08 Thread Frederick Nazareth
I personally don't think Dinesh D'Souza is in any position to denigrate Kamala
Harris and her mother. His manipulative past (not to mention his sexual
exploits) and his treatment of his wife obviously disqualify him from any kind
of judgement about "renting" partners. And as for his derogatory remarks about
Brahmanism, I am in a good position (his grandmother was my sister's godmother
and my mother was his uncle's godmother) to know that he was raised with the
same reverence for his own family's Brahman caste as he is imputing to Shyamala
Gopalan. That puts him in the category of "hypocrite par excellence" (and
perhaps closely connected to a bowl of green cheese)!

Fortunately, most of his Bombay Goan family do not share his extreme views or
his cynical disregard of the truth. And I happen to know that from the
proverbial "horse's mouth", which is far better and more reliable than a bowl
of green cheese.

Sincerely,
Frederick Nazareth

Letters of Blessed Joseph Vaz

Apostle of Goa Canara and Sri Lanka

Pilar Goa – 224 pp

There are several reasons why Saint Joseph Vaz (SJV) has ,made a deep
impression on me. SJV is an exceptional Goan, one of the handful of
saints who did not have to await for the second miracle. Fr. Cosma J.V
Costa still working in Pilar, was the, miracle when his mother suddenly
stopped hemorrhaging after her husband appealed to SJV.

:::I accidently met Fr. Cosma in Pilar around 2008, when I was taken to the
Library and introduced to a priest who was an authority on the Iranian
Cross, a cross within a cross and Schism in the church

Personally SJV is special to me because of his miracles during
disasters a drought and his work on disease in Ceylon. Seventy seven years
ago, I rushed from our garden in Morogoro and offered a slice of bread to
this apparition wrapped in a white shroud. Famines and Nutrition and
related illness have enabled me to teach Geography with new perspectives,
an invitation to teach in the Faculty of Medicine at DSM,

:::Despite being a Goan Saint, despite centuries of discrimination, few
Goans actually know of him. In Tanzania out of 1000 adult Catholics in Dar
es Salaam perhaps 10 have heard of SJV. The equivalent figure is 100% for
SFX the patron Saint of Goa.

::: What would awaken the Goan Spirit to recognize this outstanding
Oratorian and son of the soil

Kangana Secured, Rhea Mobbed (Anish Esteves)

The Centre has sanctioned ‘Y-plus’ security cover, to be provided by
CRPF, to film actress Kangana Ranaut. The decision to grant her Central
protection was based on a review of her threat perception, according to the
home ministry.

The ‘Y-plus’ protection for Kangana – on par with that extended to top
politicians and industrialists – comes against the backdrop of verbal
tussles with politicians belonging to the ruling camp in Maharashtra, where
she resides and works, in response to her questioning the Mumbai police’s
handling of the probe into Sushant Singh Rajput's death.

Rhea Chakraborty looked like she could use some of that protection, as
she was mobbed by the media when she tried making her way into the
Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) office earlier, despite being escorted by
police personnel.

The media's behavior in the coverage of the case has been almost
universally condemned, with some terming it as harassment bordering on
barbaric, as the questioning continues.

From the Trucial States of the Gulf to Singapore, positions were filled in
two categories: Anglo andEurasian. One was Anglo when born locally to Brit
parents. Eurasians were of multi parentage, looselyapplied often to include
families that had adopted the English language.    Idalina DeSouza, born 1865
in Salvador was clearly Eurasian, going by portraits and the features of
herchildren. She married in Sangolda and died in 1953.  Both her sons stole
Anglo designated jobs, one headed Overseas Cable in the Trucial States and
Sindh, the other with the London owned Bombay Gas Company. Do not report me,
but I own two Midland made ornate cast iron posts that supported pretty gas
lamps in London.  Idalina, now Pinto, had two daughters, Philomena and
Flaviana. Philomena was office clerk of the BritishRailroad in Vasco. She
married the boss, George Clarke an engineer native of Kent. They had six
children, all of whom moved to Britain and Canada where they lived and died.
Descended from them are another threegenerations who number over a hundred.
They invariably call themselves Eurasians on Social sites.  Flaviana had her
own family. A child, Violeta Aria Pinto Durso was born this week to her great
grand daughter.Americo Euro Asian, the tale lingers.

[Goanet] WHAT A DAY IT WAS

2020-09-08 Thread Aires Rodrigues
It was so nice meeting up yesterday with Sister Conrad at the Missionaries
of Charity center in Quepem. Infact, I met Sister Conrad after four long
decades. Despite being in her late 80’s, Sister Conrad recognized me at
first sight.

During the 70s whenever the now Saint Teresa of Calcutta came to Goa along
with Sister Conrad she always made it a point to visit our house in
Ribandar as my father had then accompanied her nuns during their weekly
medical camps at Chimbel and Carambolim. Mother Teresa was the recipient of
the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. Nostalgic memories of my last meeting with
Mother Teresa at her headquarters in Calcutta in 1981, remain always the
most treasured moments of my life, where I witnessed humanity touched by
simplicity and humility.

Now, as Saint Teresa of Calcutta, she was always an immense solace to the
poor and downtrodden. Her Missionaries of Charity across the country and
the world are a shelter for the destitute and homeless.

In her death on 5th September 1997 the poor and impoverished lost their
relentless savior, but the rich legacy and shining example she left behind
has been taken forward by the Missionaries of Charity who are doing a
laudable service in Goa too.

After visiting the reverend nuns at Quepem, it was so nice driving forward
to Don Bosco’s at Sulcorna and interacting with the so very warm hearted
Rector Fr Bernadino and his exceedingly cordial team. As a former student
of Don Bosco, I am very proud of my Alma Mater. In gratitude to them I
shall always remain.

Notwithstanding the current COVID-19 scare, yesterday was a very eventful
day which ended up with a late lunch at Martins Corner at Betalbatim which
has for long been my favorite joint in South Goa. A home away from home.

A Day to remember for all the right reasons. First, the solace and
satisfaction of meeting esteemed friends steeped in humility and simplicity
to help humanity. Then spiritual nourishment was followed by physical
nourishment of the best kind. The best day for both body and soul.

As Mother Teresa famously said ‘Some people come in our life as blessings.
Some come in your life as lessons’. All those I visited yesterday were real
blessings in my life.

I was intrigued by this book. In Chapter 8 – The Konkoni Card – the
outcome is described what happened in a boys’ school. It was run by
Capuchins, the priests evoked rule 23 and its variant and punished pupils
for speaking Konkani. By the time they finished school they were fluent in
English, Portuguese. The book is full of anecdotes including serious
matters like the Caste issues among friends and its impact on Education.
Chapter Nine – Brown Hair Episode is not treated in a dismissive way. A boy
from poor family, a Chardor by caste asks why the author is fair and has
brown hair the answer given is not dismissive. The reply is a
demonstration that it is still possible to be a bamon and have friends of
another caste.
