Re: [Goanet] Help A Fellow Goan (Giese)
To me as a Rationalist and Godless Goan the two sides of the José Vaz argument should be irrelevant. I agree with both sides. That the contribution of Browns and Blacks to the Catholic Church have been totally ignored even in this age when the whites are outnumbered but not outgunned in Church affairs. On the other hand I support the efforts of Filomena, her sister, George and the countless nameless people who have made the Catholic Church acknowledge that there were many of the other colour who though have sacrificed much, have been acknowledged little, except in the hearts of their own faithful. When George posted, without a second thought I rushed to add my name to the petition. With Filomena’s post I am glad I did. She told my thinking side it was not about victimhood of which I have seen a lot in North America, but about doing something about it. Roland. Toronto

[Goanet] Tito’s and The Great Calungute Movie
Not too long ago the news was full of the iconic Tito’s restaurant and night club, and even though the sale deed had not been signed, diehard fans in Goa and India, and internationally, were showing their disappointment one way or other. Now, let us take a peek at the great Calungute movie which has been going on for decades and which older people can recall well. Tito’s is an important part of the story. When the hippies came to Goa the village of Calungute was a village and not a town which means there was little development. The hippies who were nature loving children got off the boat and headed straight for the villages. Too many hippies, too few houses, and too few rooms made our fishermen rent all their huts and houses to foreigners while they - the fishermen - slept under the open sky for a while. , Over the years, more hippies more houses, yes, more hippies more ILLEGAL houses. The village economy was a reality with money trickling steadily and more often flowing into the houses and pockets of the local Calungutians. Calungutian locals of importance now included sarpanches, panchas and MLAs who were more than glad to shut one eye and close the other to all the illegalities going round and round - a lovely merry go round for all. Something for everyone, rooms and more rooms and more illegal rooms and houses was the way to go! Goan identity? Everyone was happy, and Goa and Calungute in particular was Paradise on Earth. No need to die to go to heaven. The cake got bigger and people got organized to get a larger serving of the cake. And mafias of a variety were born: motorcycles, taxis, drugs soft and hard, prostitution and dance places with booze flowing in great quantities. People from other states had their tongues hanging out and looked real thirsty for booze, and more. Goa was highlighted in magazines and Bollywood as a place to have fun and where anything goes! No feat of the imagination this - only holding up a mirror to reality. Now covid has given everyone a nice shake up, people cannot travel easily and it is a time not of hedonistic living, more to do with tightening our belts. Businesses are trying to survive. The tourists footfalls are few and far between in Goa nowadays. With the historic CZMP meeting having taken place even though students are still studying online due to the pandemic, the meeting to finalize CRZ lines and protect the environment was a must notwithstanding. Our ministers need to be congratulated for their doggedness and commitment to protecting the ecology of our state. When the CRZ lines are drawn it will be a great achievement as it it will be clear to see which structures in Calungute and other places are illegal. The demarcation of zones are not decoration on the map but legal lines that clearly show what can be done within each zone. Even if structures will not be shown on the maps, illegal structures on the ground can easily be identified and should be demolished as CRZ is not a new law, and the presence of illegal structures is breaking the law. The government must not support or appear to support and reward illegal activities in Calungute or anywhere else in Goa or our government will become a laughingstock everywhere in the world. If old illegal structures can be easily identified and are not demolished - can we tell people not to build new illegal structures in future in Goa? On what grounds?
Re: [Goanet] 76th Anniversary of Hiroshima & Nagasaki
The person responsible for the murder of innocent lives in Hiroshima and Nagasaki was President Truman. Japan's barbaric past acts neither justified the dropping of the bombs or made the Japanese govt. responsible for dropping the bombs. President Truman made the decision knowing Japan was on the verge of surrender, President Truman did not have to use the bombs. The Oped from the LA Times (see link below) points out a number of historical facts, including then General Eisenhower and several US generals advocating against the use of the bomb, the same General Eisenhower who went on to warn of the military industrial complex which is today's war profit machine (which partly explains so many conflicts around the world - war is profitable, peace is not - at least in the sense of making money). Lots of companies and arms dealers make billions with the war mongering, if only peace was as profitable. Unfortunately, more conflicts equals more profits, and the vast majority of citizens go along especially when war is cloaked in nationalism, jingoism, militarism and waving the flag. https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2020-08-05/hiroshima-anniversary-japan-atomic-bombs Excerpt: "Generals Dwight Eisenhower, Douglas MacArthur and Henry “Hap” Arnold and Admirals William Leahy, Chester Nimitz, Ernest King, and William Halsey are on record stating that the atomic bombs were either militarily unnecessary, morally reprehensible, or both." By the way, the atom bomb was tested in July 1945, by which time WW II was over and Hitler had committed suicide in April 1945. Although President Truman may have been a racist, he did not have the bomb ready prior to the war being over to drop on Germany. Hence the statement that the bomb was dropped on Japan and not on Germany as evidence of Truman's racism does not hold. Best regards, George

As you may know, the Joseph Naik Vaz Institute has sent letters and Petitions to the Popes and the Sacred Congregation for the Causes of the Saints since 1978, asking for action on the Cause of first Venerable Fr. Joseph Vaz, then Blessed Joseph Vaz. Finally, those of us who signed those letters and Petitions lived to see him become Saint Joseph Vaz because of our combined support of those signature drives. The Postulator for his Canonization, Rev. Thomas Klosterkamp O.M.I, told us that one of the factors that led to the decision by H.H. Pope Francis and the Sacred Causes of the Saints to canonize St. Joseph Vaz was the Petition and signatures from around the world that we collected in 2014 for his canonization. He recorded our work in the historical document the "Positio Historica" that he submitted for the Canonization. [Goanet] OUR BATTLE AGAINST CORRUPTION AND INJUSTICE CAN NEVER STOP
It should always be our firm resolve with added vigour to carry on highlighting any injustice that we see and nothing should deter us and our commitment in this regard. Fighting injustice is no easy task but nothing and nobody should be able to intimidate us. We should never be cowed down by any threats of consequences that we may have to face for speaking out fearlessly. We should never hesitate in public interest to take on even the powerful and mighty over issues that concern the well being of Goa. Any attempt to intimidate must only make us stronger and embolden our resolve to stand up against the powers to be. At times one pays a heavy price fighting public causes but we need to maintain that spirit and keep on battling. When highlighting an issue, it is bound to hurt some individuals but one has to have the spine to speak out against anything that is wrong while believing what the Sufi mystic Kabir said* “Jako rakhe Sai, maar sake na koi” *(None can harm him who is looked after by higher Powers). Life is a very short voyage, a journey, the end of which we know not. So let’s keep up the fight. We owe it to our Goa, or else posterity may never forgive us for having silently allowed what remains of our once beautiful State to just pass away. Adv. [Goanet] Cyrus Sanches Writes...
About his work with the Aldona Asilo. A tale of selflessness, inspiration and Goan village ingratitude. Many years ago I was President of the Managing Committee of the Old Age home Aldona, Till recently no one asked us what work we did and what we accomplished till recently. Finally, someone did ask as I am giving my reply, Very concise. Thank you for finally asking “what did I do for the old people”. In all these years people only spread rumors, insults and destroyed our good names without care. Not one came to the home to ask us about the work we had done. How many of those who gleefully spread the rumors even spent an hour at the home visiting the residents? Why am I being targeted, when I was the president and all decisions were arrived at by the committee? Why was Sr Perpetua Fernandes, The manager targeted, she who worked hard to improve the lives of the residents? I was told the word was “Who is the guy to come to Aldona and teach us” The rest of the Committee, Roland Melo, Honorato Sequeira, Monica, Damascene, Maria, and Jose Caridade were always present when decisions were taken and worked very hard together with Sr Perpetua and the nuns to make the lives of the residents as comfortable as possible. They can and will vouch for everything that follows. We should have spoken earlier but had decided to let it pass. We were ready to let all our hard work remain unspoken for peace in the village. So what did we do? When I was first elected as President, it was not of my choosing, but I accepted it as it was an opportunity to help others. I was immediately warned by many people who said to me “ Don’t become President, they will spoil your name”. This advice proved true beyond any doubt. Some came to me asking me to remove Monica, I refused as she was elected by the General Body, and if they thought she was good enough, we were willing to work with her. When we took over without any handing over, it took us a fortnight to understand the scope of the responsibility we had taken up. The first issue we tackled was the all-pervading smell of urine. Sr Perpetua was given a free hand to purchase and use any cleaners, purifiers, and diffusers to get rid of the smell. Which she did. Sr Perpetua, Roland, and I then made a tour of the other institutions Her orders run and made a list of observations to follow in our institute to improve the quality of life of our residents. The first change was to stop referring to them as inmates but to call them residents. Give them their dignity. To change the Concept from a place where they are waiting to Die, to one where they are alive and enjoying the society of their peers. The residents were living out of bags stuffed under their beds. Where rats were having a field day. We arranged Cupboards for them Sr Perpetua organized bed linen and all the beds had covers. The whole outlook of the dormitories and rooms was changed. The refectory was reorganized by improving the lighting, restructuring the tables, and providing a healthy atmosphere to enjoy their meals. Sr Perpetua ensured They were served fish even during the monsoons when most of us could not afford it. Sr Perpetua herself used to go to market carry the heavy bags to save a few rupees. We arranged for a doctor to visit the home twice a week, We also arranged for the trainee nurses to help out in the home, We had a Physiotherapist visit the home, she was also asked to advise us on the equipment we needed to purchase and set up a rehab center in the home which could also be used by Aldona villagers who would need it. This remained unfulfilled as we were not given the opportunity to complete this plan. Nobody but no one came and asked us what we were doing. Vision Hospital offered to give our residents discounted treatment and if I remember correctly one of our donors offered them spectacles. Also, Dr. Rupa treated them very well and offered to do their teeth, and never refused a call. When we took over the home there was a balance of payment of around Rs 80,000/-. All that money was recovered. We then put in place online payment to make it easy for people to pay their dues. All the money was being deposited and withdrawn from only one account. We immediately opened accounts with HDFC smooth transfer of funds, We restarted our other accounts and each account was used for a particular purpose, All monies coming into the Home were receipted, each carried the Bank account it was deposited into and the use for which it was given. We brought clarity into the finances. Even when people offered meals to the residents they paid the caterer directly. When we realized the nuns were getting only Rs 1500 each as stipend and the worker's Rs 3000 a month We immediately resolved to increase the nun's stipend to Rs 3000/-, Sr Perpetua to be paid Rs 500 more as Superior and given Rs 350 a month for mobile expenses also an amount of Rs 1000 as health benefits. This was the
[Goanet] Alito, and the matter of giving people a voice, rather than just the right, to speak
I've just come out of the online tribute to Alito Sequiera and the release of the book, Hanv Konn. I wanted to make a comment, but the earlier speakers had more than covered the universe of discourse relating to Alito so I spared the patient international audience my reminiscence about the chap, but do let me make it here, for the record. I met Alito in the early eighties when he was based in Margao before he went off to Bombay to do his M.A. I had just come to Goa after a couple of years of journalism in Bombay. What stood out for me was the strictness, the academic rigour, Alito brought to any discussion or piece of writing. I was particularly impressed by a report on mining in Goa that he had written for a research project organised by Claude Alvares. The thing I liked about it was the narrative style. It was written like a conversation between a student of mining and an expert in the field, the student asking questions of the expert and the expert explaining like he was talking to a 5-year-old. (Imagine a play in print). All heavy stuff of course, a lot of statistics, as you can imagine, but delivered in a very accessible, reader-friendly mode. No guff, just plain solid substance. Another thing that impressed me was his obsession with Goa. I didn't recognise it then, of course, but, maybe it was a childhood spent far away in Africa, far from the paradise on earth that his folks kept talking about all the time that stoked his passion for the place. Being a Bombay guy, this seemed a bit strange to me, someone being so mad about a backward place like Goa. But I entirely got the focus he brought to his passion. There was the time he told me about how he had hitchhiked the length of Goa from Pernem to Canacona while in college just so he could get a feel of the place and the people. He thumbed rides from truck drivers and spent nights in people's homes in the villages he passed through. I hope he has left a record of this somewhere. It was this earnestness, this need to get totally inside a subject of his interest, that I related to and found very congenial. My takeaway from the meeting today, as I put it in my comment there (two commas added for clarity): Alito saying that we need to give people a voice, more than just the right to speak, encapsulates what he was about.
[Goanet] Tokyo 2020
After all the difficulties a rousing Olympics has finally come to an end. The US pipped China on Gold and total medal count. China won 12 more Gold medals than previous Rio 2016 games. Showing that they are a power house in sports. On the other hand there could be a revival in field hockey, besides winning a gold after 100 years in athletics is not too bad. Hope the young stay away from mobile phones, jeans, tshirts and cats and get into all sorts of sports and win medals. BC

George Thank you for your Message I went to the site. Unfortunately 16 minutes later, I found that there were two problems. The site was confusing me with my son and I could not get out of Maple Street MA. Yes our Goan friend needs help in tthis day and age of the Pandemic Pox 21 and all the shameless wars going on in the name of Religion. I will ask my Goan and other friends here in Tanzania to participate I will also read the article which appeared in the earlier part of the year Thank you … George In Issue 410 . You George have a sense of humour you were referring to St Joseph Vaz . Yes he should be the Patron Saint of hFirst Responders. Its critical ...First Responders can be health workers of all status, policemen and religious people I am in full support I admire St.Joseph Vaz, because of my professional interest in famines, disease .I am surprised that at one time when I was at St Joseph Vaz birthplace, a young Goan couple mistook me for a Priest (because of my white beard) and came for my blessing I did but I wonder what I would have done if they decided that I should hear their confession. [Goanet] Help a fellow Goan
Help a fellow Goan, Saint Joseph Vaz, become the "Patron Saint of First Responders" during this pandemic and Covid crisis. If you already signed the petition, thank you. If you have not, only 15 seconds of your time can help a fellow Goan. Please sign the petition to Pope Francis at this link https://josephnaikvaz.org/ (the petition is half-way down the page). Your signature to our Petition - and your help in collecting signatures today by forwarding to others and posting on social media - can make the difference as to whether or not Saint Vaz is made Patron Saint. Saint Vaz risked his life for others, all we are asking now is for a signature. We have petitioned Pope Francis, asking that St. Joseph Vaz be made "Patron Saint of First Responders" because of his care of the abandoned victims of the smallpox epidemic in seventeenth century. Please sign the petition to Pope Francis at this link https://josephnaikvaz.org/ (the petition is half-way down the page) Sincerely, Joseph Naik Vaz Institute California, USA

[Goanet] A Little Byculla, Bombay And Deolali, Nasik School History
CHRIST CHURCH SCHOOL AND BARNES SCHOOL CHRIST CHURCH Located at Byculla area of Mumbai, CHRIST CHURCH School is one of the oldest schools in the city. Over the years, this school has built its reputation of being one of the top schools in South Mumbai. The main aim of Christ Church School is to develop students to their full potential in academics, social and personal life. This school has a heritage of more than 200 years with a lot of notable alumni. With the advancement of latest technologies, the school has revamped itself. Now, it is using the most cutting-edge teaching methodologies for the holistic development of a child. Christ Church School is a private coeducational prep school located in Mumbai, India. It is a Christian school, founded in 1815, under the auspices of the Bombay Education Society. It has close to 3800 students, all of whom are night scholars. The school is twinned with Barnes School, in Deolali, Nashik. Both schools follow the ICSE curriculum. It is located in Byculla, just ahead of the JJ flyover. The school is located on Clare Road, or as it is locally called, Mirza Ghalib Marg. BARNES Barnes School, Deolali, is a boarding school in west India. It was established in 1925, on the basis of a 1718 original foundation. It is a private co-educational prep school. It is an Anglican school, founded in 1925, under the auspices of the Bombay Education Society. The school is twinned with Christ Church School, in Mumbai. Both schools follow the ICSE curriculum and use the same shield as a badge or logo, Barnes in blue and Christ Church in green. Barnes Junior College is affiliated to the Indian School Certificate/ISC. Barnes School and Junior College was started in 2008. HISTORY 200 years of the Bombay Education Society The Bombay Education Society (BES) celebrates the 200th anniversary of its Foundation in 1815 in Mumbai by the Venerable Archdeacon George Barnes, chaplain of the East India Company at the time. Today, it is the oldest society in the city that is dedicated to this vital cause and runs two schools, Barnes School & Junior College, Devlali, and Christ Church School, Byculla, Mumbai. A hundred years after East India Company Chaplain Rev. Richard Cobbe founded a small free school in Mumbai (not far from the present Cathedral of St. Thomas, Fort) to house, feed, cloth and educate twelve poor boys, Archdeacon Barnes realised that the charity school could not meet the education needs of hundreds of children and so he appealed for funds. Consequently, The Society for Promoting the Education of the Poor within the Government of Bombay – now known as the Bombay Education Society (BES) – was formed in 1815 with Sir Evan Nepean, then Governor of Bombay, as its first President, to ensure a value based education and good upbringing for underprivileged children. The first small school was taken over and student numbers grew until it became apparent that new grounds and school buildings were essential. A large, airy site at Byculla was allocated by the government and new school buildings were opened in 1925. Girls students were also provided for. One of the copper plates commemorating the opening is now on the wall of Evans Hall, Barnes School & Junior College, Devlali. The other remains with Christ Church School, Byculla, Mumbai, which along with the parish church there, stands on part of the land originally given to the BES. Much of the land was later sold to help build Barnes School. The BES schools were primarily boarding schools for Anglo-Indian boys and girls, mainly belonging to the Anglican Church. However, day-scholars from all castes and creeds were also admitted. In the early 20th century, BES amalgamated with the Indo-British Institution, which had been founded in 1837 by Rev. George Candy. By then, Byculla had become crowded and unhealthy and so, Sir Reginald Spence and Mr. Haig-Brown initiated plans to move the boarding part of the schools away from Bombay to the cooler and healthier Deccan Plateau. A site of more than 250 acres was purchased at Devlali and on November 17, 1923, Sir George Lloyd laid the foundation stone of Evans Hall. Less than two years later, on January 29, 1925, a special train brought the first boarders to Devlali and Barnes School was declared open by Sir Leslie Wilson, Governor of Bombay and patron of the Bombay Education Society. The memory of Founders and Benefactors is preserved in the names of the buildings – Barnes, Candy, Spence, Haig-Brown and Lloyd. Other names are also remembered. Greaves House is named after Sir John Greaves, a prominent Bombay businessman of the firm Greaves Cotton who was Director of the Bombay Education Society and Chairman of its Managing Committee. Royal House commemorates Harry Royal, an old boy of the school who became an officer of the Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Honorary Treasurer of the BES for many years. The greatest of them all was the

Thank you. On Sunday, 8 August 2021, 03:54:48 am AEST, Roland Francis wrote: Fantastic article from ABC news in Australia. Thanks for bringing it to us Mervyn. It would have been wonderful if Nehru were living today when the world really needs the lessons he could teach us. Admittedly he failed in advancing India’s economic interests although he did give the country a solid industrial base and and a sound political system in which to grow. Glad you liked the article, Roland. It was sent to me by my daughter who lives and works in Western Australia(Perth). Today's world needs forward thinking and progressive leaders like Nehru, but I sometimes wonder if his vision for a 'just and equitable post-colonial world' will ever be realised if India has leaders like the present incumbent? Nehru's idea was to unite rather than divide people. My comments could apply equally to leaders in Africa, the Middle East, Latin America etc. Mervyn Maciel
[Goanet] MINISTERS & MLA’S MUST BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR DEEDS AND MISDEEDS
Power corrupts and absolute Power corrupts absolutely, is what we are witnessing in Goa. That atrocious and scornful ‘Bhumiputra’ legislation was the biggest affront that this government could have inflicted on the very uniqueness of Goa and Goans. The power inebriated and bigheaded ruling party has obviously lost its marbles and having gone berserk is stooping to inconceivable levels while sinking the remains of Goa down the drain. . Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and the BJP owe an open regret to every Goan on account of that ill-conceived and deceitful ‘Bhumiputra’ legislation that was with ulterior motives recklessly and hurriedly bulldozed through the recent session of the Legislative Assembly. Given the string of foul and tainted decisions taken by the Chief Minister against the interest of the State, whether Goans would even entertain his request for forgiveness is a big question. It is imperative that all those responsible for this entire episode be held accountable. Equally answerable are those officials in the Law department who cleared such a horrendous bill without examining its legal implications as the government is duty bound by the mandate of the Supreme Court to clear all illegal and unauthorized structures. Though we all knew that this appalling move by the government would not withstand the test of law, it did create an unnecessary heartburn and needless panic for a lot of people more particularly Senior Citizens who were so very disturbed over this draconian move. It is an irony that while Goa is officially celebrating 60 years of Liberation, the Government chose to act so high-handedly and recklessly. It was known to all that this illegal and soiled move by the BJP was to try and lure voters as the Assembly elections are round the corner. But the government had to retreat in view of the spontaneous massive backlash it faced from disturbed Goans from all sections of the society. The public rage is not just to the name of that proposed law but to its content and more particularly the vested skewed political intent. The Chief Minister has once again proved his sheer rank political immaturity and if he has any sense of the people’s pulse he requires to outright consign to the bin that devious ‘Bhumiputra Adhikarini bill’ and not even dare to rename and reintroduce it. Pramod Sawant has just a few months remaining, so he would be well advised to enjoy that throne and not rock it while it lasts. As any legislation that is enacted has far reaching effects on the State and its people, there must be a detailed and thorough debate on the pros and cons of every law that is contemplated. We elect Legislators to debate issues concerning the people and to enact good laws. The Assembly is the democratic forum where elected representatives of the people must hold debates on matters that affect the people. It should afford an opportunity for members to discuss the intricacies of government policy, proposed new laws and topical issues of the day. Debates are designed to assist MLAs to reach an informed decision on a subject. Curtailing to mere three days the duration of that session of the Legislative Assembly was a very overbearing wrong move that did not augur well in the framework of democracy. Besides in this current Pandemic, Goa is grappling with so many very grave issues and the Legislative Assembly should have been a proper and appropriate forum for the MLAs to raise and debate issues pertaining to the public. The sittings of the Legislative Assembly have to be meaningful and fruitful in the interest of the State and not merely a cosmetic exercise aimed at fulfilling that constitutional requirement. It is imperative that there should be a free and fair meaningful debate without bulldozing legislations through. Stifling debate by a lack-lustre, ill-informed Assembly only leads to the current malaise and downward spiral we find ourselves in and it is absolutely anti-democratic. It ignores the aspirations and best interests of the people and leads to a more dictatorial style of government with poor laws, lack of accountability, scrutiny and transparency. It erodes any trust that the public may have in their MLAs. If elected lawmakers can be so uncaring and abdicate their sacred and democratic duties how can they expect other institutions of Government and the people to respect the poorly enacted laws that they legislate? In a way we deserve the political rot because sadly we knowingly elect MLAs who are by the people, of the people but definitely never for the people. But thankfully as a safeguard our Constitution of India provides for a Judiciary that can intervene when the Legislature or Executive exceeds its limits or abdicates in its bounden responsibilities. To: IN Message: 6 of Sat, 7 Aug 2021 12:43:11 +0100 (BST) From: Eddie D'Sa < gdig...@btinternet.com> Eddie noted in GOANET about Adolfo's account of the 75th Hiroshima Anniversary was disappointingly sketchy. Dear Eddie Thank you for the detailed response, from various other authoritative sources. I only hope that others in Goanet respond, The discussion is important. Its interesting how our subject disciplines enslaves us. I am mentioning this because for the last few weeks I accepted to mentor a Botanist undergraduate, She was wondering why I was spending such a long time with a Technician in the Botany Department. What she was unaware of was that Mr Frank Mbago had co-authored a two volume book with a Japanese Professor on valuable plants and shrubs of two parts of Tanzania . She followed me and when I stopped at the massive truck of a Baobab tree and asked her what that plant was …she was surprised when I told her that it was nearly a 100 years old. *BACK TO HIROSHIMA * So back to Heroshima Compared to 60 years ago when only the USA had an Atomic Bomb ready to use ….now there are more than half a dozen countries big and small who have the nuclear weapons and are ready to use them. One such country is Israel, South Africa nearly got there …..(strange I was in a mission with USAID in Nairobi and ready to go to Botswana …the message came that the American Citizen was to go on his own>) Leaving that matter of the Atomic Bomb alone ….even more devastating is the hydrogen bomb , An immediate blast of an atomic bomb destroys everything people including within 1 mile. The bigger faster blast of the hydrogen bombs pulverizes everything within a radius of 5 miles. These calculation were made in the 1940;s by Prof. Edward Morse, of Berkeley. What prompted me to write that sketch piece was that of late I have seen how we have a few allowed a few politicians and warmongers to blatantly misinform .. After several very very busy days I attend the funeral services of ZITA Petronila Christina Fernandes and suddenly I am brought to earth as at every moment in St Peters Church Oyster Bay….the remarkable generosity, humanity of this lady strikes me. The church was packed by Orthodox Muslims, Asians, Africans, Hindus, Sikhs, working class and even the rich and many Goans Many many people and entire families were saddened and even wept, right at the end one teenager just fainted Yes Zita was married to a Hindu, but she helped everybody who sought her help, Lutherns included , young African boys with no hope of going to school and today he was in from of the her coffin giving us testimony to his second “Mum” Father Mario Dias, reminded us that the sixth of August was the Feast of Transformation and my thoughts went to how the world was transformed on the 6th of August 1945. Yes Truman intended to kill as many Asians as possible. Individuals can make a real big difference ...Knowledge Shared is Knowledge multiplied Thank you Eddie I hope we get more responses Grandolfo In a Quiet Makongo Juu PS I went to Tokyo several times as one of the two representatives from Africa on the Board of the United Nations University. Staying in an Hotel on the 22 Floor ...I hate to think of what would happen if a Nuclear bomb was dropped ...When the Bomb was dropped many of the houses were made of wood
