Re: [Goanet] Mr Braganza of Ajmer(e) - Frederick’s Link.

2021-09-15 Thread Roland Francis
The 1889 postcard sent by someone in Goa to Mr Braganza in Ajmer, a British
India railway town is being sold on eBay.

Who wrote that postcard and what did it contain? Let’s speculate.

While it could be any relative or friend seeking a job in the Railways,
assuming Braganza was a man of some substance, let’s confine ourselves to
assuming it was his elder brother petitioning Braganza from Goa.

Could it have been joyous news that the mangoes and coconuts had come in and he
wanted to send some to him. Let’s write off mangoes since Ajmer would have had
plenty of nearby Ratlam mangoes. Perhaps it was feni.

Was it sad news that the neighbour had died of liver trouble and that they must
help the family with some funeral expenses (which please brother, send).

Was it a touch for money which elder brothers managing the ancestral house and
property always seemed to need from family who had gone elsewhere for
employment. Even if they didn’t need it, the prevailing sentiment would have
been “let the fellow pay, he’s making enough”.

Would the elder brother think it was time for Braganza to divest himself of his
legacy portion since he probably wouldn’t return to settle back in Goa and
therefore an opportune moment for the elder brother to get sole title. No
bothering with sisters, they were given some paltry dowry.

Was it a request to be allowed to collect his accumulated jonn and make a false
promise to say masses for their parents while in reality that money needed to
be paid to the local publican (taverna).

Braganza received such postcards and other communications from home with
equanimity. He was earning a good salary and he had bought a home in Ajmer for
after retirement. He was living in the spacious Railway Quarters now. He felt
for his elder brother. He always failed at school and therefore had no job
prospects. He was blood and it was his duty to help him.

So Braganza took that postcard and added it to the many others he had stacked
in an old cigar humidor. Somehow, all the others got misplaced when he moved
house and only this remained, finally to land on eBay 125 odd years after his
death.

But meanwhile Braganza was living and happy and dressed to go to the post
office to send off that cash to his elder brother.

[Goanet] UNCARING GOVT PULLS THE RUG FROM UNDER ITS EMPLOYEES FEET

2021-09-15 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The Goa government has heartlessly played with the lives and wellbeing of
all and sundry. Injustice galore not sparing even its own employees.

In a drastic step having far reaching financial implications on hundreds of
its employees an order was issued suddenly last year withdrawing the
Housing Building Advance (HBA) Scheme given to Government employees

The loan which was availed at an interest rate of 2% now requires the
employees to suddenly pay the current prevailing rate of over 10%. This
skewed decision of winding up HBA Scheme is most arbitrary, unfair,
capricious and done in a very hasty manner violating fundamental Rights of
those who had availed of the scheme.

It has caused extreme financial hardship and a lot of stress as benefits
given at the time of employment cannot be taken away in this manner to
their detriment. This sudden withdrawal of the HBA Scheme has resulted in
very high financial burdens due to which employees are unable to repay
their now enhanced loan installments.

The least the government could have done was to stop accepting new
applications thus avoiding needless economic havoc by upsetting existing
loans thereby impacting its employees and their families with such
unbelievable distress and that too in a pandemic.

Dr. Bob Nelson, the world’s leading authority on employee recognition
advises Governments to take time to appreciate employees and that they will
reciprocate positively in a thousand ways. Time the Goa Government heeded
his advice!

[Goanet] Vision and mission to save our planet

2021-09-15 Thread Pratapananda Naik
This poem just blew me away. India needs thinkers like this.

TAKING SIDES

When we grew up as children, did we even know

Who prays standing up or who prays bending low?

Did we care who scored the goal when India won

Was he a Hindu or a Muslim or a Christian's son

Did we care if our sweets came from north or south

No we did not as long as it tasted good in our mouth

We held on to each other and considered them friend

With arm around shoulder, should this friendship end?

We did not divide each other then, why should we now?

Just ‘cause politicians value people less than a cow?

Recapture those years of innocence, follow our own hearts

Don't be forced to take sides, that's how the trouble starts

Turn a deaf ear to their calls for war, turn a blind eye to their views

Will we murder our brothers now like Hitler killed those Jews?

God made the earth for each and everyone to equally share

Does the sun shine more on you or on everyone who's there?

Does the breeze blow only on you and leave others alone?

When a good man dies doesn't everybody mourn?

Does the rain fall only on one tree and leave the other dry?

Doesn't everybody live under the same beautiful blue sky?

Should we tell each other what to eat and who to pray to?

Shouldn't we respect their traditions and let them continue?

Can you tell the tiger that it should not eat the lamb?

Then why should you force your will on another man

As children we shared everybody’s food it tasted quite all right

As children for that last piece of cake did we not happily fight?

Did we ask veg or non veg before grabbing the plate?

When we were hungry children everything tasted great

We did not make divisions then why do we do it now

Is not another human more valuable than a cow?

When did we become communal and start taking sides?

Who are we to differentiate between the colour of our hides?

We bonded as school children to people of all faiths

Now we burn their places of worship in some states ?

Hold up a mirror to yourself and tell me what you see

With our fellow Indians did we lose that camaraderie ?

[Goanet] Win Some, Lose Some.

2021-09-15 Thread Roland Francis
That’s what life is all about. Succinctly expressed by a pretty Singaporean
saleswoman when I told her the shirt she was selling me was much lesser in
price than the same one I bought somewhere else.

But this time I am referring to food, specifically pork, not clothes.

In Amboli, Bombay once, it was plentiful. East Indian families would slaughter
their yard-bred animals often, spread the word in the village and sell you
whatever cuts you wanted. Tasty porkies, who knows what they were fed.

If you wanted a leitão, you had only to make a weekend trip to Mount Poinsur,
Borivali and buy the little fellows from the priests and families that bred and
sold them there. 100 bucks for a ten pounder, circa 1970.

Then I went to the Gulf. Initially there was as much pork as you wanted, coming
from Denmark and England. Well packed, presented and sold in the chiller aisles
of big supermarkets. Then all of a sudden the Emir became sanctimonious
(perhaps his new found friendship with the Saudi king made it imperative) and
notice was given that no pork would be sold in Qatar. Those were great days.
The sellers had to get rid of their stock quickly and we had a ball. Towards
the end, good pork was almost given away. After that it was famine for pork.
The only way you could get it was bringing it back from your India trip and
sneaking it past the Doha customs or meet a Filipino seaman from a ship
touching the port who smuggled and sold it to you. The Qatari custom officers
were good then. Depending on their mood, if they knew you were Christian and
carrying a modest amount, they would either wink and let you go or throw it in
a special bin as if for confiscation and when things were quieter, make their
Indian helpers empty the binned pork into the trunk of their Mercedes cars.

Then when I came to Canada, it was back from feast to famine to feast again.
Ontario pork, although not as fine as Goan pork once in taste, was hygienic,
succulent and pleasing to the eye. All at a very good price. The Chinese went
one step further. They sold you all you needed for sorpotel - blood, lungs,
liver, heart. Not to mention brain and tongue.

A similar tale played out, though in dissimilar sequence, with fresh fish and
shrimp. Feasts in Bombay, Goa and Qatar, but famine in Toronto. We do get all
the fish you may want here, but none of it is fresh, all frozen or farmed.

[Goanet] Preserving the legacy of a Goan historical treasure!

2021-09-15 Thread Filomena Giese
>From the Joseph Naik Vaz Institute...

Announcement for the 336th Anniversary of the founding of the Goa branch of the
Oratory of St. Filipe Neri, by St. Joseph Vaz, Apostle of Kanara and Sri Lanka,
on September 25, 1685 at Holy Cross of Miracles Church in Old Goa.

There is nothing better that those who care about preserving the multi-faceted
world class legacy of Asian Indian-Sri Lankan St. Joseph Vaz can do, than to
sign our Petition and do something public to show our support to make him a
Patron Saint!
So let's do it! Don't complain that the Vatican does not recognize the
achievements of Asians and other people of color when we ourselves do nothing
to ask for recognition and racial justice.  Go to http://www.josephnaikvaz.org
to sign our Petition to the Pope and change history.
We're asking those interested in preserving his story of heroism under
persecution and his taking care of the abandoned victims of smallpox in Kandy
at the risk of infection, to sponsor a Mass for these intentions:1. For the
336th Anniversary of founding of the Goa branch of Oratory of St. Filipe Neri,
by St. Joseph Vaz, Apostle of Kanara and Sri Lanka, on September 25, 1685 at
Holy Cross of Miracles Church in Old Goa.* This is the first fully native
religious Congregation in colonial and modern times.  St. Joseph Vaz and his
Indian-Goan priests smuggled themselves into Sri Lanka, and served the
persecuted Catholics of Sri Lanka who were cut off from Rome and the Catholic
power of Portugal during the 150 years of Dutch rule. * He is the first Asian
to re-found an entire Church and be officially canonized with the title of
"Apostle."2.  For our Petition to the Pope -  now re-named to include victims
of infectious diseases - to make St. Joseph Vaz "Patron Saint of victims of
infectious diseases and their First Responder Caregivers"
Please reply to our email at josephnaik@gmail.com if you would like to find
out how to offer Mass for these intentions, and to send us the name of the
Church, address, time, and name of those offering the Mass.  Pass the word on
through your social media contacts.  We need your help to get 50 Masses offered!
In 2014 we sent a list of Masses offered by our supporters around the world for
the Canonization of St. Joseph Vaz to Rome and we successfully moved the Pope
to act.  Now, we will send details of your Mass to the Vatican to show your
support to make a Goan who has many historical  "firsts" to his credit, a
Patron Saint of the Universal Church. Will you help make him the first Asian
Patron Saint in Church history?

[Goanet] IRISH and Indian Flags and Symbols

2021-09-15 Thread Adolfo Mascarenhas
I still remain puzzled ...why the colour of Indian and Flags have the
saffron colour. I am not colour blind but there is a huge difference
between Yellow and Saffron ...Saffron ...that valuable medicinal and spice
root (see the verdict in the US Court when one multnation tried to patent
the plant) So Saffron is a very distinct colour and if the BJP part also
uses it ...no objections.

But apart from flags, countries have symbols. Tanzania has the TWIGA or in
English Giraffe. I like it but was surprised that it was not the British in
Tanganyika who adopted it. I have pictorial documentary evidence that in
1414 a certain fellow from this part of the world gifted the Chinese
Emperor with an this Majestic and Gentle creature Even more puzzling
was it a Goan who provided the evidence .check the 2nd Edition of
Moffet circa 1956.

Finally, you do not mention the Symbol of Ireland I first realized how
serious this matter was when I was in Boston around St. Patricks Day. Yes
it is an unofficial symbol of Ireland. As most of you all know St Patrick
used the shamrock's three leaves to explain the Holy Trinity to the PAGANS.
Oh yes it was this ENGLISH priest who Christianized Ireland. Mind you
Shamrock is also a symbol of luck, and vaguely I remember a few other
things.

Strange that a little boy on a North African shore should bring this
great philosopher down to earth ..There was no point in him even yo
discpher the Trinity .
So is there a local flag for Goa ..

[Goanet] GOA AT CROSSROADS

2021-09-15 Thread Aires Rodrigues
In a few months Goa will go to the polls to elect its 40 MLAs and a
government for the next five years. Propriety demands that the current
government in its dying days does not initiate any new projects and lay
cosmetic foundation stones to pull the wool over anyone’s eyes.

It would be prudent to just complete the projects underway. It is unfair to
try and hoodwink voters with false and fake promises which never can be a
reality. It is also highly improper to create new financial liabilities at
a time when the economy is in shambles with the State on a borrowing spree.
Anything and everything just for sheer political expediency is just not
acceptable.

Goa’s cash strapped exchequer finds its coffers empty and is debt-ridden.
The next government will find itself with a Herculean task managing the
State’s skewed finances. Having miserably failed on all fronts, this
government has a lot to account for having allowed the decay and
destruction of Goa while having abdicated in its bounden duty to protect
the State and its people. In the run up to the Assembly elections we will
be witnessing a heightened flurry of political activity. Politics makes
strange bedfellows. Over the last few years we have seen Political
Prostitution to the hilt. Even those in the world's oldest profession
struggle to keep up with our politicians.
