Re: [Goanet] Odds In Favour Of Indian-Origin Chancellor Rishi Sunak As Pressure Mounts On British Prime Minister Boris Johnson To Resign

2022-01-14 Thread Anita Dias
That's good to hear Eddie. I have heard and know about him but immaterial if he
- Rishi Sunak was present at the BYOB party.
His integrity will come into play if he was at it.
That is what I am focusing on.
If he is in the line-up for being the next PM; it is an important aspect.

A shameful incident that took place in May 2020 is only now being revealed!!
Therefore--Would it not be better to know now then later?
WHO was at it???

We know his dad ( an MD) is from Kenya...AND his mum Usha ( a pharmacist) is
from Tanzania ie Dar; that she went to Shaaban Roberts Sec School.
Parents with integrity!

Goans - whether in Portugal or India or anywhere in the world were literally
falling over themselves/drooling when Antonio Costa was elected.
After all you too had many clippings on him on Goan Voice-didn't you?

I have no idea why you are bringing Costa into this conversation.
He has no bearing on it. On Brit politics!

I think there is a change developing ---where integrity is the name of the game
in politics.
As sooner or later the true colours show.

Early life[edit source]

Couto's family hails from the Roman Catholic Goan community,
and her family grew up in times when the region was part of
the Portuguese-ruled Estado da India.

Family and schooling[edit source]

Her parents, António Caetano Francisco (Chico) de Figueiredo
and Maria Quitéria Filomena Borges, were both from the
coastal, mainly Catholic region or sub-district of Salcete.
She moved as a child to the neighbouring city of Dharwad,
then in Mysore, and a centre of education and opportunity for
Goans, with her parents and six siblings -- including
Francisco Xavier, Emma, Lilia Teresa, Luis de Figueiredo,
Marise.

She left Goa at 8, studied in a Catholic primary, Protestant
high school, and the Karnatak College, later a university --
which had students from all over the then region of Mysore as
only Bangalore had colleges then, she said in a 2021
interview. She said her life was centered around her
identity as an Indian, as a Goan, and as a Catholic. college

Marriage and migration[edit source]

She married a prominent Indian civil administrator of Goan
origin, Alban Couto (Albano Francisco Couto), and spent time
outside of India, and returned back to shape the literature
of the region in her latter years.

Career, literature and writing[edit source]

She taught English both in Goa, at the then-fledging Dhempe
College, and later outside the State at some prominent
institutions in Delhi.

Couto's writing career began with her 1986 book about Graham
Greene.[1] Her 2004 book, Goa: A Daughter's Story, covers the
history of Goa along with being an autobiography. The book
discusses Goa, from the prehistoric times to its Portuguese
colonialism to its Liberation and subsequent loss of
culture.[2] In 2014, Couto released her book Filomena's
Journeys, which delves into the life of her mother, Filomena
Borges, covering "Goa’s dying Catholic elite" as it shows the
shift of society and culture in Goa.[1]

In her first and well-received Goa-focussed book she
describes her father's battles with alcoholism, life in the
changing times, and growing up in multicultural India.[3][4]
Couto went on to teach English literature in colleges[1] like
Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi and Dhempe College, Panaji[5]
and has contributed to periodicals in India and the United
Kingdom.

Role in Goa[edit source]

As the Chairperson of the DD Kosambi Centenary Committee in
2008, Couto helped initiate the DD Kosambi Festival of Ideas,
a lecture series sponsored by the Department of Culture, Govt
of Goa.[6] Couto has also been actively involved with the Goa
University.[5]

Personal life and death[edit source]

Her husband, Albano Francisco Couto (better known as Alban
Couto), belonged to the Indian Administrative Service. She
met him in Mumbai and they had three children together[5],
Vinay, Veena (Pinto de Andrade) and Vivek Victor Due to the
nature of his work, they would travel and stay across the
country. They almost settled in Chennai, before finally
choosing to live in Aldona, Goa,[7] in his ancestral house.
She enjoyed listening to South African jazz and was
passionate about films, having started a film club when she
was a teacher.[5] Albano Couto died in June 2009.[8]

Maria Couto died on 14 January 2022 after a brief illness.[9]
She received wide tributes from writers, politicians and
other quarters.

[Goanet] Bishop Franco Mulakkal

2022-01-14 Thread Roland Francis
The system has worked and a man declared innocent. We must assume the judgement
was fair and untainted as much as we must assume that the instances of rape of
nuns by the church hierarchies in various Kerala churches and convents were
irrelevant to the personal behaviour of Bishop Mulakkal.

As the Indian Express concludes, this incident should be a lesson to the
Churches in Kerala to put in a grievance process that should provide an easy
resolution to complaints and avoid the circumstances of the whole Franco
Mulakkal incident. After all, the many outpourings of nuns in Kerala cannot be

[Goanet] Deep Fake

2022-01-14 Thread Roland Francis
A very useful article from DW that explains what is a deep fake and how to
detect it.

I always suspected some local Bombay amateur singers producing output that is
so comparable to the real thing.

Now I need not wonder.

[Goanet] WITH IT’S NOW DOUBLE STANDARDS, BJP GROPING IN THE DARK

2022-01-14 Thread Aires Rodrigues
It is now very clear that the BJP which is out of control has miserably
lost its way.

Its weird diktat to Manohar Parrikar’s son that he should first work some
years for the Party before seeking a nomination to contest the Assembly
polls is clear double standards. If in 2019 late Francis D’Souza’s son
could be selected why not Utpal now. There can be no selective deviation in
party policy.

The BJP should realize that the young of today are better equipped to
perform and deliver rather than the grey horns.

On family Raj it also cannot be pick and choose. The policy has to be
uniform with no exceptions whatsoever. If family Raj is unacceptable to the
BJP, how is that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had gone overboard in
lobbying for the Mayem seat for his wife Sulakshana. That her fate was
forecast is another issue.

While in the Opposition the BJP had managed to get the then Minister
Dayanand Narvekar to resign after he being charge-sheeted, but is now
allowing awfully tainted persons like Babush Monserrate and Mauvin Godinho
to contest despite them facing much more serious criminal charges. Is this
not also clear double standards?

[Goanet] ONE SIDED PATRONAGE OF HATE SPEECH

2022-01-14 Thread John Eric Gomes
*PATRONAGE OF GENOCIDE AND VIOLENCE*
The proponents of a Hindu Rashtra are emboldened by the PM and ruling
party's silence on the violence and hate speeches by politicians and even
Seers clearly communal and will destroy the secular fabric of our nation if
it continues unchecked! Reportedly Jayesh Naik leader of the Bagrang Dal
and his group threatened to disrupt celebrations of the annual feast of St
Joseph at the ruins of an old church of the village of Sancoale to be held
on Jan 16th. In all of India many Christian and Muslim minority people and
their institutions are being targetted by such vigilantes with State
patronage! Goa is showing the way by the villagers of Sancoale led by
Hindus lodging a police complaint standing by their Catholic community,
where keeping aside religious differences they have been living together in
harmony and Jayesh, not even a Sancoale resident for the last one year has
been inciting religious disharmony! The police have submitted a report to
the Deputy Collector. We also have videos of a Dharma Sansad in Haridwar of
hate speeches by Hindu Seers going viral, even calling for genocide against
Muslims! The lack of action by the police with no immediate arrests and
no condemnation by the administration is shocking. The matter has reached
the Supreme Court which is moving cautiously. Hate speeches unchecked are
dangerous. History clearly shows all genocidal movements were started by
hate speeches. The Holocaust for extermination of Jews is a grim reminder
and our Hindu Seers calling for genocide against Muslims as in National
interest must be nipped in the bud with strict and exemplary action called
for by all law abiding Indians!

Re: [Goanet] The Road To Perdition!

2022-01-14 Thread Joao Barros-Pereira
yes, of course, what you say is true.
I try not to use the scooter at night and seldom go on a busy road.

Anyway, life goes on and i go on with it as always in an uncertain future ...
thanks, anyway
