[Goanet-News] Plans Firm Up (Part 22, Valmiki Faleiro)

Following the SS Sabarmati incident on 17 November
1961 and firing on Karwar fishermen on the night of
24/25 November 1961, the Government of India issued
definitive instructions to the armed forces on 29
November 1961 to begin preparations for action.
The order put HQ Southern Command under Lieutenant
General JN Chaudhuri in charge of the action.

India's 17 Infantry Division would be the Special Task Force
for Operation Vijay. Its GOC, Major General MM Khanna, was
due to proceed for a course at the UK's Royal College of
Defence Studies. Brigadier KP ("Unni") Candeth at the
Directorate of Artillery at Army HQ was quickly promoted to
Major General and appointed GOC 17 Infantry Division.

The Task Force would be deployed less a brigade (with one
operational brigade and one reserve brigade) but another
brigade would fill in. On the same day, Major General DK
Palit, Director of Military Operations, left a message for
Brigadier Sagat Singh, Commander 50 Independent Parachute
Brigade at Agra, to rush to Delhi.

In the words of Major General VK Singh, "Sagat commandeered a
Dakota of the Paratroopers' Training School, and was in
Palit's office in less than an hour. It was here that he
learnt about the planned operation for the liberation of Goa
and his own role in it. Later in the day, there was a
conference in the office of the Chief of General Staff,
General Kaul, where the plans were finalized The Warning
Order for the operation was issued [as a flash signal under
the signature of Lt Gen BM Kaul, Chief of General Staff] at
1530 hours on 29 November in the form of a 'Personal For'
signal from the Chief of Army Staff to the Army Commanders,
with copies being endorsed to Major General M.M. Khanna and
Brigadier Sagat Singh" (History of the Corps of Signals,
Volume III, Chapter 3).

Portugal was aware of India's naval deployment as
well as plans for ground attack. Portuguese
Brigadier António Leitão and the Goa
  Governor-General, Major General Manuel António
Vassalo e Silva, himself pleaded with Lisbon for
  reinforcements: armaments, munitions, transporters,
communication equipment. The little that was there
  was old and obsolete.

To Salazar, there was no war, hence no need of
reinforcements.

The Portuguese military command in Goa could only improvise
the Plano Sentinela (sentry plan). The plan was to first
delay entry of the enemy at the borders, with the use of
guerilla tactics if necessary.

When aggression could no longer be resisted at the
borders, the bridges were to be blown up and the
enemy held back on the opposite bank of the rivers.
Essence of the plan was to delay enemy advance.
Finally, when no longer possible to resist,
defenders were to resort to a gradual fallback to
the Mormugao peninsula, the last redoubt, and once
there, defend it at all costs -- until UN
  intervention arrived.

Portuguese Cavalry Captain (later General) Carlos de Azeredo,
who was posted in Goa at the time, said the Sentry plan "was
totally unrealistic and unachievable". For the plan to work,
"portable communication equipment was necessary. There was
none available."

Alluding to the 17 November 1961 event at Anjediva Island,
Nehru said on 1 December 1961, "We cannot tolerate such acts.
We will take the necessary steps at the right time." Krishna
Menon assured a Goan delegation from Bombay that "force would
be used if necessary to liberate Goa at the right time". As
we now know, India had already decided to use force in August
1961.

On the same day (1 December 1961), India approved the ground
assault plan. It would be a two-pronged attack. 17 Infantry
Division less a brigade under GOC Major General (later
Lieutenant General and Army Commander) KP Candeth would be
the main task force to enter Goa from the east and capture
Panjim, Mormugao and other key objectives.

A subsidiary thrust from the north was assigned to the 50
Independent Parachute Brigade under Brigadier (later
Lieutenant General and Corps Commander) Sagat Singh, in order
to divide Portuguese forces that would otherwise put up a
concerted resistance to 17 Infantry Division.

It was the first time that all three arms of India's defence
services -- land, water and air -- would be used in the ops.

On 2 December 1961, troops began to move to the concentration
area (pre-commencement of war position), Belgaum. All were
in place by 9 December 1961. D-day (alliteration for 'day'
of attack) was 14 December 1961.

On 3 December 1961, BBC reported Portugal saying that India
planned an invasion of Goa. Police oppression mounted in
Goa. Freedom fighter and future labour leader George Vaz
cabled Nehru on searches, arrests and torture of freedom
fighters in Goa.

Another great take on the story!

I must admit I’d forgotten the progeny of the East African Asians became
shopkeepers, much like Margaret Thatcher’s parents, and became as right
wing as her. They took over the Conservative Party.

Mervyn, far-seeing as usual! You are not much for that ‘he’s a right
winger, but he’s our right winger’ philosophy.

Thank you for bringing us up to our senses, Mervyn. Dishi Rishi is not only
the richest man in the British Parliament, but his father in law is one of
those Indian billionaires!

Oh vey!

[Goanet] Politics is the best career

2022-01-15 Thread Nelson Lopes
Politics is the best career

All and sundry political candidates rush and clamour ,
Social work as their tag and best armour
Rise in social status ,embracec politician's life of glamour
Yearning seriously to focus and acquire this honour.

No qualifications ,experience do require,
The most rewarding profession to acquire ,
Pensioners benefits, in office even for a day ,
Tax free emoluments are not designated As pay..

Industrialist, businessmen work for years,
To amass their fortunes with toil and tears,
One wonders how in a short time legislators gather wealth
The answer is dishonesty , cheating and stealth.

Envy free travel, treatment, water, and power,
Postage, fuel, interest free loans rain in a shower
Paid attendants , security , driver, festive allowances ,subsidised
food to eat, ,
DA , travel allowances , only sign presence rules to beat.

Commissions on projects, jobs ,liaison are overtime perks to secure ,
Defections, support at a huge cost does largasse ensure,
Loyalty to party ,voters dissent a silent voice,
Self development albeit is avowed choice.

Benefits for generations ,focus and gain,
Make hay while sun shines ,opportunity not to repeat again.,
Politicians swallow any insults,in power to remain ,
Efforts to dig in ,stay perpetually, never in vain.

Shortest route , best profession millions to earn,
No gestation period, skills or qualifications to learn,
By being in power, position, enormous influence they vield,
Courts, police, I Tax, ED to any authority need to yield.

In power mostly safe from any adverse touch,
Reigning kings and rulers they vouch,
Ensure their wives, sons daughters relatives find a place ,
Children follow professions of parents is no dynasty or disgrace.

How politicians amass, accumulate wealth you ponder ,
It is in line with the world's next wonder,
Any doubts why politicians want to die with boots on ,
Monuments, projects , perpetuate memories after they are gone.

People sweat, toil over years to build empires and fame,
Politicians in office are apt in this dubious game,
Industrialist, businessmen , stars enter the fray now ,
Actively participate in the process that benefits somehow.

No need on regulations , policies rules on politicians to depend ,
Pampering, bribing , be in good books ,not to offend ,
Wife, son ,daughter a relative fill his place
Sympathy, empathy, to incumbent voters gladly embrace.

Parties find to bet on winable, ,guaranteed , safe choice,
Continuation of legacy of departed a matter of just rejoice,
As and when politician is forced to vacate , ,retreat,
As an untouchable, with disdain voters treat.

Out of power, influence, loses position and post,
No more a chief guest or welcomed honoured host,
Politician with fame, privileges, tend to drown,
The position is temporary glorification, power and crown .

Devoid of qualification self worth and profession ,
Prudent to invest in business, create assets to absorb the shock and
cushion ,
The role of politicians is to bring, discuss participate in New laws ,
Not to go hamer and tongs about flaws.

Govt has various Depts to care for development and growth need ,
Resorting to naugurations , foundations, raising toasts a pitable task
indeed
In waking life concentrating on personal greed,
Selfishly striving for next generation of family to feed .

Involve with local bodies organisations , problems to solve ,
Not to impose might on institutions to align and dissolve ,
Regularly listen to the voters woes and meet
Raise issues loud and clear and keep Depts on their toes and feet

Politics to day gives enormous power influence and fame,
No need of education ,experience or capital in this game,
If you win redouble energies ,first to ensure loss to recover .
If you lose, will drown in an ocean of debt to discover

[Goanet] Who can afford to fight elections

Who can afford to fight elections

Look at some of the personalities yearning to represent you and me in Goa
Assembly
Imagine their character .integrity educational merit ,social standing
to understand, participate, suggest, amendments to sometimes motivated
legislation that will affect every one and that should alarm bells. THE
WORK OF LEGISLATORS is to legislate which suggest they should be
specifically qualified and legally too. WE do not need Politicians to
duplicate the work of various Govt Depts, agencies, instituted for
development in every field ,staffed with qualified personnel. You will
retort that ministers occupying the post are sometimes worse, but they have
at least paid , highly qualified secretaries to dissuade them . .what a
travesty of facts that decent and educated voters are represented by
lowly qualified or non qualified persons
No decent person with hard earned income can ever hope to enter the fray
and win
First jostling for ticket need to contribute for parry fund and keep in
good humour others involveled These are unwritten laws and no secrets. The
party in turn will dole out a pittance, bit of your own donations for
expenses. The party bosses make sure of winability which means that
candidates have enough resources to splurge and muscle power to intimidate
othe candidates. The limit recommended by election commission for expenses
is a joke at present times
The publicity material and the army of personnel required for campaigns
distribution, , to manage boots , to ferry and guide voters, their daily
expenses on food ,refreshment, travel and bonus costs a bomb is
untraceable as expenses to compute. Then open bars ,restaurants in places
have fixed quota of amounts as give away in kind. The incentives offered to
selected voters in kind and cash does not figure in the expenses. The
candidates have stocked liquor ,goods and cash for distribution well in
advance ,anticipating the restrictions imposed in different places and
confidants to tap as and when required
The choice of the candidate is forced on you and only recourse left is to
stamp NONE OF THE ABOVE( NOTA) It may ensure your integrity, satisfaction
but will not alter the position on the ground
Candidates are enamoured to flaunt their label of so called social service
as the acceptable qualification . THEY have not excelled themselves
educationally or profesiinaly to make a dent of importance in their own
lives in the first place Sorry to state that some have not even cleared
SSC .Others have procured dubious educational certificates of external
courses and non existing Colleges and defunct universities . The parties
want you to cast your so called valuable and sacred votes to these
scoundrels and fulfill your democratic rights
The perks like Pensionary benefits, Free electricity, inverters, Postage,
fuel, DA and travel allowances, subsidised food, refreshment allowances,
, for days of National importance, Free driver and attendants ,
security, drivers, cars at ridiculous low interests at 2%, housing
allowances upto 30 laks even when they have palatial houses, car loans
every two year period for 2 % ,Free medical facilities in India and
abroad at exchequer costs when same are available locally, Free travel by
air, road , train first class including attendants ,wives and children
reserved at any moment
These official benefits called allowances are totally tax free, when even
medical reimbursement is taxed, including all allowances. The take way for
Ministers, MP, Central Ministers CM,heads of corporation is envy of highly
qualified CEO
Then there are hidden benefits like commissions on projects in respective
constituencies ,on contracts allotted, supplies , over invoicing of
tenders, liaison fees for companies , and legislations tailored to suit
particular concerns , placements etc
which officially cannot be confirmed as it falls in grey arrea
Influence they wield to manipulate and favour their contacts at a price of
course.
The party hopping is at a enormous gain possibly to keep reserves for
elections and also for the benefit of progeny not yet born
An industrialist, businessman toils for years to gather his wealth, then
how do we explain politicians turning crorepotis by dozens in a short
time, from riding cycle to luxurious cars, two wheelers when as ordinary
persons trudged on foot
There is no doubt that profession as politicians is the shortest route to
amass wealth, fame ,position and influence
and is the best career option without qualification, experience , capital
or efforts like an industrialists
No wonder the aspirations and clamour to join politics is increasing
exponentially with respects to parties and candidates
The cry to have minimum qualifications, fixed period ,and strict
conditions for defections ,to tax all income and rethink on pensions will
always fall on deaf ears
Remebered Morarji Dessai who was only dissenting vociferously on pension

[Goanet] DO NOT SQUANDER YOUR VOTE

2022-01-15 Thread Aires Rodrigues
These assembly elections are very crucial for our State as it could well be
the last where the Goan vote would be of any consequence.

Taking into account the importance that the coming elections would have in
defining Goa’s future, it is all the more important that we should not
shirk our fundamental duty of saving our land. So there is no question of
taking an "apolitical" posture at these elections in particular.

One does not have to contest elections but one has to be ready to take a
stand and support the party that could do justice to our State. It is also
very important to be alert and vigilant of those political parties that
have craftily surfaced to ensure that there is division of votes to
deviously benefit the BJP. This we should not allow as everyone after the
last ten years of horrific misrule want to see the BJP driven out of
Power.

It is no secret that politics governs everything in our society, so it
would be pertinent that we see the practical reality and now unitedly work
towards a better Goa.

Leaders need to have a vision and know where they are heading and leading
their flock. Goa is such a small State and could have been well managed.
Remaining mere spectators at election time would only further deteriorate
the pathetic state of governance that we are experiencing.

Let us take a conscientious stand and free this state from the current
alarming levels of corruption and maladministration that Goa is gripped in.
Something we cannot achieve by remaining "apolitical". And the February 14th
electoral battle is one we need to win for the sake of a secular and
progressive Goa.

[Goanet] Rishi Shunak

2022-01-15 Thread patrice riemens
Aloha,

There is not much to be proud about Rishi Shunak. He's for sure the most likely
successor to BoJo the Clown, whose fall will happen when (not if) the ruthless
Torry ruling class decides so. As PM, Shunak will then unlash a new era of
austerity with gusto, as he hates the lower classes in true blue fashion. In
terms of refugees/immigrants/foreigners policy he is only marginally better (or
just simply smarter) than his cabinet colleague Priti Patel who famously
answered when asked about her own refugee (from Idi Amin's Uganda) backgound
that 'now the times are different'. So they are ...

Looks like the Torries are in for a reverse of Marx: from farce to tragedy.

Cheers all the same, p+7D!

Checking on Dr Ashok Varadkar, the father of the former PM of Ireland Dr
Leo Varadkar, see the following, and I wonder if he’s a Goan?

Two of my brothers were decorated as freedom fighters, and my sisters took
part in the liberation of Goa,” says Dr Ashok Varadkar.

Here’s the full article.

Sure, Eddie.
It sounds good to me.
It’s time Indians got their mojo back.

Of course, Ireland had Leo Varadkar as the PM a while back. His father is
from India.

All we need now I’d to have an Indian PM of China.
Then all will be done.
