[Goanet] Goa Diary, November 11, 2022: Soter, Bhates, & Prakash

2022-11-10 Thread Rajan Parrikar
Yesterday I went to Caritas in Panjim to see my old friend Soter D'Souza.
They don't make men like Soter anymore: scrupulous to a fault, gentle, and
with the constitution of a yogi. And very, very Goan.

If you seriously want to probe the roots of the current disaster that Goa
has become, then you need to have a sit-down with Soter. He has all the
goods. He knows where the bodies are buried, where the skeletons are
stashed away, who did what and when. More important, he calls it like it
is, sparing neither friend nor foe.

I can see why there are no puff pieces on Soter in the Goan media
(correction: there are no pieces on Soter, puff or otherwise). What he has
to say about the people at the helm of Goan politics and society - and he
doesn't shy away from naming names - is unpublishable. No writer would want
to stick his or her neck out and run afoul of Goa's power players. Far
easier to preen and offer anodyne. Those 'Likes' on Instagram and Facebook
are more precious.

We both had a chuckle of the revisionism we encounter these days. Expect
more of this in the future. Outsiders of no relevance will be elevated and
projected as Goa's saviours. Never mind that there's nothing left to "save."

After I bade Soter goodbye, I followed my typical locus, the short walk
around the Hotel Mandovi bend to Varsha Book Stall to pick up copies of the
Hindu calendars - the 'panchang' and Kalnirnaya. Pleasantries were
exchanged with the Bhate brothers, owners of this Panjim icon. The story of
Varsha Book Stall deserves a longer treatment.

Next stop was a few feet away - Café Prakash. Now, alas, a pale shadow of
its glory days when Goa's worthless 'patracars' (journalists) would gather
here and shoot the breeze over chao and bhaji. Metabolizing bhaji and
samosas was their true calling. Reporting on news and events an
afterthought.

I met Prakash-bab Sakhalkar, the owner, who turned emotional upon seeing
me. I could tell he feels weighed down by the change in tide. As the years
roll by, he is one of many I knew in Goa when they were in their prime, but
now depleted with age and in some instances, by an adverse turn of events.
To those of us closing in on 60, this decline of the body and spirit serves
as a preview to our own conclusion.

[Goanet] PANAJI TRAFFIC COPS A FIASCO

2022-11-10 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Panaji Traffic cops trying to take cover about the traffic chaos in the
city due to their mismanagement claiming that it has only 59 staff is
indefensible. Panaji is a very small city and can be well managed if the
cops dutifully perform their duty with honesty and commitment within a well
thought out traffic management system and with a zero tolerance to
corruption and traffic abuses.

In any task it is not just the number of staff but its proper deployment
that matters. Quality always prevails over Quantity. In Panaji, the major
traffic mayhem is on three of its main roads. Dayanand Bandodkar Marg, 18th
June Road and Atmaram Borkar Road. We all know that the traffic cops have
conveniently not been acting against all the Casino related vehicles which
are parked on the Dayanand Bandodkar Marg around the clock despite it being
a no stopping – no parking road. Is corruption or external interference
holding the cops from cracking on these obvious traffic abuses on this very
busy road?

If the Panaji Traffic cops cannot manage to ensure free flow of traffic and
reduce the daily inconvenience to people, which they have now proved, heads
must roll to make room for new brooms to sweep clean and effectively.

We needed the Andhra Police to step into Goa and guide us crack the rampant
drug trade in our State. Would we need a team of traffic cops from there or
possibly even from neighboring Karnataka to cruise into Goa to fix the
traffic mess in our capital city? It seems inconceivable that a capital
city striving to be a smart city does not have smart city traffic
management solutions to battle the traffic mayhem in our capital city!

[Goanet] Dr Freddie closes his last chapter

2022-11-10 Thread Nelson Lopes
Dr Freddie ending his last chapter

A curtain has come down on an illustrious career of the medical
practioner. He was a very popular medical officer at Govt Primary health
centre at Chinchinim. His mild and understanding nature won him patience and
friends. He was approachable to all alike ; no airs or pride and thus
remained a simple, humble person.
I often spend time at his clinic at Chinchinim He was not happy with the
environment and its surrounding and could not secure a better premises
.In a goodwill gesture, he met the local practioners and informed them
about his intending plans He was most sought after for guidance and
treatment of diabetes..As he was not very happy about his practice he then
shifted to Varca, where he was quite content with his flourishing
practice. It was limited to morning session only.In the evenings he was
avaiable to his neighbours and close friends
I first met him in connection with concessions for senior citizens with
Govt cards. His response was very encouraging.Once again we shared company
on the felicitation of Sir Dcruz .His wife was an educator at GAHS
Curchorem where Sir Dcruz taught and joined enthusiastically in
instituting an award in his honour IN the school for Science at SSC of
GBSHSE
On several ocassions I met him at his Sirlim residence and exchanged
pleasantries. He seemed to be hale and hearty and not the one to complain
and seek attention
A warm and friendly person to be associated with. His patients speak highly
about his concerns for them
His actions and behaviour as a humane doctor will reverberate for long.He
has earned a niche in the hearts and minds of his grateful patients. He
lived a purposeful life as a medical practtioner and as a social worker. His
practice after retirement was service not for financial gains as it is to
my knowledge that he waived off fees in many a deserving cases
Long live Dr FREDDIE he will be truelly missed
. MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE
