A video has recently been circulating on social media with absolute fake
and spiteful allegations made against learned judges of Goa by an
individual. The very irresponsible accuser fails to present any evidence to
back up his spurious and unfounded allegations against the Judges. The
contents of the video is absolute thrash.

Shooting the messenger because you do not like the message should never be
the basis for making a video while attempting to tarnish the reputation of
judges and the judiciary that people depend on for justice.

Trial by media with malicious videos or throwing stones from a distance
maybe the new norm on social media for some. However, this form of cyber
abuse always backfires on the maker of the video and discredits his own
reputation. The integrity of the people falsely accused will always remain
intact. If the accuser had any evidence he should have placed it before the
appropriate authority.

I hope our High Court will not remain a mere spectator but initiate
suo-motu contempt proceedings against the author of that malicious video
and investigate whether it was a criminal conspiracy. He must be brought to
book.A bully won?t stop until he is punished.

[Goanet] Love in the time of Orchata!

2020-06-30 Thread Francis Rodrigues
Last night I dreamt I traipsed down to Fontainhas again
that beautiful Latin corner of Panjim, that is still old Portugal,
complete with faint strains of the fado emanating from the
pretty yellow houses, lining the quaint, narrow streets.

A light staccato Portuguese chatter in the air accompanies
a piano or two from the upstairs Academia da Musica. What
is it now - five decades, yet it lives in my river of dreams?

My best friend had a crush on Eunice Lima Fernandes. She was
very pretty, gorgeous lips, and he was besotted. He lived not too
far from her in Fontainhas, but as far as I was aware, worshipped
from afar. We had all joined Dhempe College in Miramar that year
of the Indo-Pakistan war in 1971. We had both begun Science.

Eunice was in the same year. Her brother Angelo was our hero's
good friend, though I doubt he knew lover boy was smitten. Just
me - and Ivo Guia-Furtado who played superb violin next to the San
Sebastian Chapel, naughty Carlos Albert opposite, 'Piqun' Armand
Aquino next door, and 'Baba' Servulo, the young guitarist enmeshed
daily in the pangs of his own unrequited love, even as nightly his
'Vandals' beat group tripped the light fantastic.

Fontainhas has changed since I dined there a few years ago. The
Academia moved to Campal, as the Kala Akademy. Hordes of
tourists trudge the narrow streets. The pretty young 'mistis' girl
pharmacist Jesuina is gone - I lost count of the number of razor
blades and toothpaste tubes we infatuated lads wastefully bought,
just to catch a flash of her eyes, and a hint of her dimpled smile. Of
course the rustic little bridge still straddles the creek like it does in
Alfama, Lisbon. And you can still hear the faint whisper of Portuguese.

Five decades have come and gone. The beautiful young damsel now
produces an original 'orchata', smooth as a summer breeze. How have
the years treated her? Memory illuminates beauty like an Old Master's
painting. The poet Robert Frost had a crush on a pretty thing called
Sabra, which went nowhere. He married his high school sweetheart.
Many decades later in a strange twist his secretary came across the
poet's letters, and found Sabra. I leave you to find out what happened
next. Who is lucky enough to marry their childhood crush? I did - that's
another story! What about our own hero? Well, he married another!

A dozen years ago, we met up abroad after almost four decades.
Of course, he remembered Eunice! But between us the mists of time
had drawn up an invisible curtain. From best friends, we carried on
a sporadic relationship, which stumbled on a petty disagreement one
cold winter evening, and we have not seen each other since. We
are just too different now. Still our carefree days in lilting Fontainhas
come alive again in my dreams. Elegant belles sip Eunice's creamy
orchata on the roofed gallery steps as gentle Ivo Guia-Furtado (it was
he who introduced me to Remo) still plys a haunting fiddle, the notes
dancing in the moonlight, "Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa, men have named you!"

[Goanet] Re. Carmo Mascarenhas - The Lone Viscount

2020-06-28 Thread Francis Rodrigues
Hi Linken,
I was in and out of India as a student in the '70's, toured much
of the country. I spent quite a bit of time in Mumbai, and of course
many of the Goan enclaves from Nariman Point to Karjat. It's three
decades since I visited Matharpacady (quaint then and now), where
I knew a few folk, and where distant relatives once lived. The late Lt.
Cmdr Henry Azevedo's family also were musical saw virtuosi, I guess
the late Trilby mentioned in the article was possibly their relative.

But you enquired of the late Carmo Mascarenhas, or "Carm" as he
preferred to be called. Born in the late 1940's, his family was from
Arossim (Cansaulim) in Goa, though he grew up in Matharpacady,
where music became a passion. Like many young Goan hopefuls
of the time he started music early on with the harmonica, but gave
it up at the age of 15, due to a lung weakness. Luckily his sea-faring
father bought him an electric guitar, which he took to with gusto!

"Day by day I grew to love music more than anything else, and I
found it to be my only source of joy and happiness," he once said.
In the India of the late '60's, Carmo found playing Western pop music
a hard gig, and lamented the lack of encouragement and opportunity.
He formed his first pop 'beat group' with friends, calling themselves
the "Easy Beats". But he only ever achieved success as a solo artiste.

He performed with a drummer accompanist, giving rise to his nickname
the "Lone Viscount". He snatched every opportunity to perform solo,
particularly over All India Radio for the Young Musicians Series, and the
Cadbury Amateur Hour, then re-broadcast over the very popular Radio
Ceylon of the time. Visiting Goa, he was locally accompanied by drummer
Steve Sequeira (part of Remo's "Beat 4"). Here are very grainy pics of both:

http://2008goanconvention.com/media/carmo_mascarenhas_steve_sequeira.jpg

His first pop composition was called "Loving Word". His influences were the
icons of the time - the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Tom Jones; Peter, Paul and Mary.
Despairing of his folksy style succeeding in India, he emigrated to Canada in
the early 70's. He found some success here, recording a seminal album of
his original compositions in 1975, in Winnipeg, called "Someday Soon". The
style is of the time - lyrical, mildly introspective, outwardly non-commercial.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GJpWgbgfuQ=84s

Carmo met Chrystle, a young Canadian some years his junior, at University
where both were taking Asian Studies. They married, had a son and daughter.
En route a trip to Goa in 2003, Carmo unfortunately drowned in the deep end
of a pool in the Far East, attempting to save his son - fortunately rescued by
his daughter. The Lone Viscount now plays his guitar to the celestial spheres.

Subject: [Goanet] Meet the Ghosts of Matharpacady Past -
Matharpacady Village

An important omission, to my mind, in the ghosts of Matharpacady web page
are a mention of the eight or so Goan residential clubs and the Goan
families (mine being one) in the lane that I like to call Club Lane. It is
these residences which staged those little candle-lit processions which
took a round of the village's two main lanes to hymns sung loudly in
Konkani whenever Our Lady visited. I don't know about now, but as recently
as twenty years ago there were no less than ten clubs in and around
Matharpacady. Some clubs staged tiatrs in the lane adjacent to Cross lane
and there were occasional dances and feast celebrations too. Christmas
gained that special silver-golden glow from the parade of paper stars the
clubs hung jutting out into the lane.
As for music, the loudest noise, apart from Joe Perry's bongos perhaps, may
have come from Carmo Mascarenhas in the Arossim Club, up a flight of
stairs opposite our house. (That is, much before he took off for Canada and
his tragic death later -- about which I would appreciate some detail from
people here who may know more). Carmo may have been the first to get an
electric guitar into the village (thanks to his seafarer Dad, of course)
and rock the wooden beams and rafters in the houses in and around Club
lane. As Olinda, a fellow-tenant in 31 Matharpacady, would laugh and say,
"Carmon start kelem, rang-tang korunk!" I, of course, all ten-years-old of
me, would have already bounded up those wooden stairs to watch at close
quarters, as Carmo, with his Elvis Presley puff, strummed the strings and
crooned in an impossible-sounding, Westernised falsetto, which impressed me
no end!!

Re: [Goanet] Dear Elsie's passing

2020-04-24 Thread Francis Rodrigues
Dear Mervyn,

If I don't write you now, I never will!
First of all, my deepest condolences on the passing
of your darling Elsie! She was a treasure beyond words.

You cannot imagine the number of times I've read and re-read
"Bwana Karani", and every time I went out with my (Scots)
sister-in-law to tend to her allotment in Cambridge (UK, not
Massachusetts - I live in N. America:), I remembered yours,
and said I must write Mervyn, I must, I must. but never did!

My folks are 4th generation Africa hands - my grandfather (EA
Railways) went to East Africa in 1896, my mother (in her '90's,
in Panjim now) was born there. So was I, siblings, wife and kids.

I'm not sure you knew my parents - my dad ran Nyeri General
Hospital with Dr. Ross, then to Nairobi with Dr. Phillips at the
King George VI Hospital (now Kenyatta Hospital). My mother
served in the British Army, and founded the Nyeri Commercial
College (all white secretaries!), in 1956. Our house was in the
gorgeous highlands at the foothills of Mt. Kenya, nights resounded
to the blood-curdling cries of the Mau Mau in the caves below!

Why I meant to write all this time was two-fold. My folks were
friends with a T.A. Dos Santos, who served in Lodwar - over the
years we received the annual Christmas card, since died out.
My dad passed on 25 years ago - but my Mom (still going
powerfully at 94 - ex-Brit Army, haha), always asks if I have
any news of Mr. Santos. I know you served in the far north,
did you know of him? I know he spent time with the Turkana.

I left Kenya in 1970 for further studies abroad, and returned
twice, the first time with a law degree, in the midst of the chaos
of the 1982 attempted coup. Those were interesting times!

I used to receive a lot of British newspapers in the mail in the
'80's (including the Catholic "The Universe"), and on one
occasion (at the Tom Mboya Street Post Office) was accosted
by an Asian gentleman, who asked what I was doing with all
the 'foreign newspapers' after reading. I actually distributed
them to elder-care homes, etc., but was delighted to pass
them on to this gentleman - who apparently did similar work,
and went under the name of "Brother Francis!"

Long story short, we became great friends, and he turned out
to be a Wilfred Maciel - your brother! He was an advertising
(and enterprising!) man, and of course, a journalist! He came
over many times, with various 'foreign brochures' and advised
us to move back abroad - though he said he never would.

I saw less of him as his health deteriorated, and in this infirm
state, he was often robbed and mugged on the streets of
Nairobi. Eventually he told me was moving for his own safety
to the outskirts of Nairobi in Kasarani - to the Nyumba ya
Wazee, run by the Little Sisters of the Poor. I was shocked
to hear he was struck down in a road accident in 1994 on
the Thika-Muranga road, a few metres away from his home.

>From the many who attended his funeral, I understood I was
not the only one to benefit from the wonderful friendship of
this wise and beautiful man. Just thought I'd let you know!

Above Dabolim airport flies a windsock - a red rooster labelled
'AR'. Blows hot, blow cold. When the wind blows east the rooster
crows AAP, when it blows north, the rooster screams Congress,
west it cackles BJP, and south it roars CPI!

At night, it goes home to Ribandar dreaming of the day all the
politicians and casino-owners will wake up to wish it a happy
birthday in all the newspapers, TV, what have you. Can't look
you straight in the eye - for fear of being recognised as a todoki -
technology now used at airports the world over - aires recognition!

Only Goan politicians who do not take bribes and do not benefit by illegally
obtained land should be felicitated. So the question is: which Goan politician
is clean and should be extended birthday wishes?

Dear Goan friends worldwide,

We would like to echo the invitation for Sunday Dec. 30, at the Clube Gaspar

I've received quite a few confirmations - when you write in next, tell me a
teeny bit about yourselves,
and if you would like to contribute in word or kind - spoken contributions
should not be more than
3 min (speech or song); anything else, take account there will be around 50
people in attendance.
I'm a great believer in variety, and moderation, and will edit your
contributions for maximum effect.

Welcome!

Dear Goan friends worldwide,

We would like to echo the invitation for Sunday Dec. 30, at the Clube Gaspar
Dias in Panjim,
with a gentle request for all of you to try and make this a meaningful
celebration - perhaps a
little poem, a delightful skit (3-5 min), funny incidents from the diaspora -
share and entertain!

If you produce anything Goan, here's your chance to bring samples for the
diaspora - produce,
or leaflets, writings, CD's, music - our core idea is networking, and joyous
fellowship. Unfortunately
you cannot contribute towards the catered meal itself (as it's mandatory
inhouse), and we're glad
to sponsor it - but you can contribute in other, and as innovative ways you can
think of.

Welcome!

I really enjoyed Aretha, and Ajit.

Both were silky smooth, and a joy to watch.
Aretha soared, bewitched, broke barriers.
Ajit's left-handed mastery was enchanting.

Unforgettable memories of the '60's and '70's...

It is rarely that you hear of 3 deaths of well known people in separate
places within a few hours.

But here are the 3 people who made the world a better place but are no more.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee - A gentleman Prime Minister.

Ajit Wadekar - Once a household name captain of India?s cricket team.

Aretha Franklin - Queen of Soul.

It would be nice to meet up with any other Goanetters in NY,

If so, I can look you up/send me a pic. Moi - here's me most

I had gone to purchase a number of Goa 1556's books for my own

Hey Rico,

I could be tempted, but I ask again -
Could we not try a more upmarket venue this year,
with more ambience and better food? Appreciate the
concept of the annual meet-up, but find it dreary in the
socialist surroundings you choose (communal halls mostly),
ending up with the tired faces slung with '70's jute-bags:)

I know your formulae encourages equitability for the price
of a cup of tea (and maybe a dying bhajia), in keeping with
Rico's SAGE philosophy (Sadha And Gandhian Equality),
but can we do something different this time around?

It was because of Gabe's parents doing this very thing that he himself was
able to be recruited eventually into the RAF. He will tell you it was his own
merit but that is the usual shallow answer he would be capable of. The train
of events that led his parents or grandparents to bow to the British that
led eventually to a brown man being taken in a white air force is something
he would have relegated to that didn't happen.

 From: Frederick FN Noronha fredericknoro...@gmail.com
Subject: Re: [Goanet] When Rajya Sabha nominee of Goa speaks...

The ten levels of debate in a JC argument:

 * Argue decently.
 * Reply with questions.
 * Name-call childishly.
 * Defend friends, if necessarily angrily.
 * Cite Andamans, Daman Bridge, Siddhis, and a few other all-time favourites.
 * Take your debate to other lists, suitably masalafied
 * Remember one comment made 758 days ago.
 * Blast your education, school/college you attended.
 * Proffer advice on ethics of journalism, the subject you teach, the
 culture in agriculture,
   etc, etc, etc...
 * Question your language (English is not an easy language or some such
 logic)

If you 'graduate' to 8, 9 or 10, it means you're doing pretty well in the
debate. On the other hand, get stuck in meaningless papi karma of
 question-replies-question or
 I-said-you-said-that-he-said-but-she-did-not-say means you're getting stuck
somewhere between the Bermuda triangle and the Bahamas cyclones. Definitely
not a good place to be...

Tony,

As a Mapusacar, I find your post extremely upsetting. ?The Mapusa Friday market
is, if I can quote Cecil, world famous, all over Goa. I find it extremely
humorous that you, a resident of Vasco would dare comment about Mapusa. Vasco
is so quaint, it makes a remote village in Bihar look like a bustling
metropolis.?

Yes, we do have a parking problem in Mapusa - this is a reflection of our
higher levels of economic development compared to you lesser Vascoites who
keep?trespassing our haven in your overfilled KTC buses. Regarding your reply
from Reginald Laurenco, my suggestion is that you wait for another few more
years. We Mapusacars have better things to do, than reply to some irrelevant
request from an immigrant from Vasco. In any case, he is quite busy dealing
with very mess being created by your Vasco brothers who keep migrating to
Mapusa in the jam packed KTC buses.??And you have the nerve to talk about
garbage??

As a blue blooded, true son of the soil, I find it very saddening to see my
Mapusa being ruined by the immigrants from Vasco. ?This is written in the hope
that some one like Nasci will hear the cry of agonized?Bardezkars and do
something about preserving Mapusa.?

Marlon

From: Tony de Sa tonyde...@gmail.com

**
Mapusa is a failed city. Sad that the taluka town of Bardez which once had
the best organized market in Goa has been allowed to become a shambles by
the powers that be. More so when the present Chief Minister and his Deputy
are both from Mapusa.

Roland,
It is not difficult to make up/give names to people and think that they are

Thankfully, most people go thru that stage in their teenage years.

There is an old Chinese saying that comes to mind here:
The beginning of wisdom is to call things by their right names.
