Lesser number of Carnaval Khell groups this year..Carnival 2021 Some 10 years ago, there were upto 45 Khell groups (see list below) but now, this year just about 25 (list posted earlier or see link below) There could be various reasons for lesser number of Khell groups particularly this year due to Pandemic situation. At least 2 groups missing this time due to their group leaders no longer alive viz Com Marcus, Philipe de Orlim etc At least 3 groups due to their group leaders’ migration to UK etc and got held up there e.g. Socorro, Reginald etc At least 2-3 not sure of whether khell will be allowed this year due to Corona scare. Yet there may be some groups missing out due to their cast members migration and got held up there due to flights restrictions etc Viva Carnaval!! Khell groups in 2011 1. Febri fest Villagers including us never missed this feast, we used to walk through the fields and under the hot sun covering distance of 7- 8kms to attend the feast at Consua via Cuelim, Xendo, Temba, Borsulem, Osoilem, Kumsar etc. We did not have vehicles not even cycle at that time till early 80s. We simply said 'Febri fest'. Our Lady of Livra Febres. ‘Livra Febres’ literally means ‘relief from fevers’ Bishop Alwyn Baretto was the main celebrant (Bishop of Sindhudhurg) was preaching on family values Feast choir, music was too good Feast Video including festa muzg, feri and Cheuris pao "The name ‘Livra Febres’ literally means ‘relief from fevers’. It is believed that the church was built as the sponsor of the church had attained relief from sever fevers he would be suffering from. Ever since then, petitions are placed to the patron of the Church ‘ Our Lady of Livra Febres’ to gain relief from ill health, especially fevers.' Update: 18.10.19 and 19.10.19 The train continues to get step-motherly treatment. e.g. stopping at stations for one hour only to give way to other trains coming from behind etc Who would like to travel by this train if it takes 8.5hrs to reach Vasco from Belgaum? Those travelled by this train more than once said 'never again, had enough'. At Dudhsagar waterfalls, there is always rush and panic not knowing how long the train will stop there.. There is no sign board to say 'Dudhsagar waterfall' nor there are announcements to say so, if they announce, they could also say the exact time it will stop there thus avoiding fear and panic amongst the passengers or tourists. Just five coach train (121.4m + 2 engines 35m) , it can take 2+2 minutes to walk up to the point and the train stops 5 minutes only and that too is not very sure or clear. Read details below with pics and videos A suggestion: I think they should convert this train to Vasco - Mumbai Express with limited stops via Londa, Belgaum, Miraj etc It may be reminded that we had two daily trains on this route to then Bombay VT viz Mandovi Express and Mahalaxmi Express, both are withdrawn since Mid 1990s at the time of gauge conversion. Mandovi Express now with Konkan Railways route. Train leaves Vasco station Fri/Sat at 06:05 but ticket booking window opening timing is 06:00, they will open at 05:45 but you may see a long migrants Q already not of Belgaum bound passengers but Howrah Amravati Train (pic). You may jump the Q once ticket window is opened for Belgaum ticket because their train leaving 1 hr after yours. There I saw the act of bringing down Lord Jesus Christ from the Cross and believe me or not I thought this was happening only in Rachol. Bearing this in mind I went there in 2008 with my video camera, video available in youtube. It was only around 2012 I realized that it was happening in almost all Churches except Cansaulim Church. Well, it was happening there too but stopped in 1950s due to the egos of the gauncars or the casteists. I remember there were three types of comfrad with three different colour opmus (opa mussa) viz Red (Gauncars, Bamon, Chaddies), Blue (Sudras) White (Kunnbi gauddi etc) According to a source Traditionally, it was Red Opa Mussa comfrad who took dead Jesus in the procession but in late 50’s other comfrad members started demanding that they too be allowed in the procession to carry the casket and that’s where the problem started. Since then, there is no act of bringing Jesus down the cross nor any procession on the day Many Parish priests, Bishops come and gone but the situation remain unresolved till today Shame!! Convento do Carmo - Ruined Church 1619, Old Goa For us, ruined Church at Old Goa means St. Augustine (near Santa Monica). It was only last year (2018) I heard of another ruined Church of Carmelites known as Convento de Carmo but had no idea where exactly it is located in Old Goa. Did make lot of queries, even googled it out but no mention of exact location or direction to the site. This year too (Jan/Feb 2019) we saw or read many news items in the form of press notes and press conferences but none told us the exact location as if they wanted to celebrate privately. Reference was made in TOI articles, one saying to the east of Basilica and second time saying the east/west of Se cathedral. Even put a query on Facebook but no help. It was only when I saw a pic posted in FB page Memórias da India Portuguesa asked the post to give me direction as to how to get there to which Neenad Neo promptly replied saying its behind Old Goa Petrol Pump, Road by the side of a housing colony and then climbing involved etc. That's how I managed to get there today.. There is a tarred road now (raw) and one can go up there with car or bike or take a motor-cycle pilot from old Goa Gandhi Circle. Or simple ask to take to Old Goa Steel yard from there new road to the right taking uphill. Saw last float at starting point at 1am. Romtamel were going on till 11.45pm It was to start at 4pm. I see no press or media highlighted this issue. Infact. one newspaper said it ended late Saturday whereas, it actually ended early Sunday. After 11pm, parade streets were almost empty, VIP galleries were empty too - see some pics Migrant vendors/hawkers made brisk business selling water, Kulfi, Ice fruits, Popcorns, Sugar candy, Boiled Groundnuts etc - mainly selling at premium rates. I always wanted visit Dudhsagar (Milk Sea) but never made it except this time which was purely unplanned (We came here, Collem, for some other reason) over 140 pics here http://goa-joegoauk.blogspot.in/2018/02/dudhsagar-waterfall-goa.html Collem is about 75 KMs from Panaji and takes about 1hr 20min to reach by car via Ponda. We left Panaji at 07:30 and arrived at Collem Dudhsagar Ticket booking office at 08:50hrs. Again, we left at 16:00hrs and back at Panaji at 17:20hrs. Like some places have share a taxi, here we have share a jeep, 7 passengers per jeep. Fare is Rs. 400 per person, plus Compulsory renting / hiring of life jackets Rs.30 and Forest Department entry ticket Rs.50 per person (Still camera, Video camera etc extra - see tariff board pic). So, it Rs.480 per person. Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKUjRLmK0TM There are about 431 jeeps but recently the Forest Dept put some restrictions limiting number of jeeps plying to Dudhsager to 225 per day. This could also mean all may not get tickets. It is advisable to visit Wednesday/Thursday where the rush is comparatively lower (acc to our jeep driver advice). CM Parrikar recently said that ticket booking would be done online only so that only those with tickets can come (as sometimes tourists go back without visiting the waterfall due to non availability of tickets) We were lucky, we got tickets, I was in the Q for about 15 mins at around 12:10. After buying ticket, you go to another counter for life-jackets. Our Jeep left around 12:20 and soon after crossing the stream (River) we reach at Forest Gate at 12.25 where we paid for the entry ticket 50 and camera Rs.30 (video camera 150), our driver did the job of buying tickets for us etc. Although we paid cash at 3 different counters i.e. per head Rs. 400 +30+50 none gave us a receipt. The distance from Collem to the Dudhsagar fall is about 12 kms through bumpy road (full of potholes throughout) and our jeep was like ship sailing in the rough sea (Ride may not be suitable for older people). The ride takes about 45 minutes each way at about 20km/h speed limit. We arrived at 13.07 from where there is about 10 minutes Sloppy/rocky walk to the base of the waterfall. You are given 1.5hrs time to spend or return back to the jeep, our time was 14:40. Walking though the streams (temporary bridges) and rocks, again may not be suitable for older people. One can see the waterfall from 4 different locations viz 1. 5 minutes before arrival (from your jeep window, pic), 2. at the arrival point by going up on the watch tower (pic), 3 while walking to the main/base and 4 is the base where one can view it completely from top (peak) to the base where many seen bathing with the bathing zone. Drishti Lifeguards also spotted. Also spotted many monkeys (Hetim) where they even come close to you and may even steal or run away with your bags. We also spotted people on the top (peak) I guess it falls in the State of Karnataka (Castlerock?) see pic We were also lucky to have a beautiful view of a passing train, see pics and another train with 3-4 engines only. We were back at Collem around 15.15 where we had our lunch Fish curry rice thali Rs.70 only cheap and good. See pics Collem or Kulem Rly station (SWR) is about 15 minutes walk via platform footbridge see pics and time table. Sadly, not many trains stop there We are told, during monsoon, there are motor-bike pilots available to take you to the Dudhsagar fall via Railway tracks charging Rs.1000 per head. Jeeps do not ply during monsoon say June to Sept/Oct. We left Collem at 16:00hrs and reached Panaji KTC 17:20hr. Feast of Our Lady of Livra Febres, Consua Verna, Goa, 2012, 2018 2018 Feast: Feast of Our Lady of Livra Febres celebrated on 28.1.2018 'The name ‘Livra Febres’ literally means ‘relief from fevers’. It is believed that the church was built as the sponsor of the church had attained relief from sever fevers he would be suffering from. Ever since then, petitions are placed to the patron of the Church ‘ Our Lady of Livra Febres’ to gain relief from ill health, especially fevers.' We used to attend this feast 'Febri Fest' on foot by covering a distance of 8-9 KMs through fields and creeks/streams. My mother and many others in the locality never missed the feast. Now there is a motorable road from Cansaulim to the Consua Church via Cuelim, Temba, Borsulem, Osoilem, Kumsar. One can also reach there either from Verna-Airport Bypass ( see pic) or Verna Nagoa Road. There is a Konkan Railways tracks / Tunnel just behind / below the Church (see pics trains passing etc) Feast on 28.1.2018 Sorry I was late and arrived only after the Feast Mass and procession got over at 11.30am I thought the feast mass was at 10 and called Taxi at 10 but it came at 10.30. Feast mass was at 9 and not 10. I only got the Feast brass band or festa muzg and q-ing for verneration (Umao).
