[Goanet] Book Discussion with Sonia Faleiro

2021-01-29 Thread Leonard Fernandes
Our next conversation is with Sonia Faleiro, whose new book, "The Good
Girls: An Ordinary Killing", a masterly inquest into how the mysterious
deaths of two teenage girls shone a light into the darkest corners of a
nation. This was a complex case that involved a large number of people, and
was forced to take into account issues of family structure, tradition,
poverty, caste, religion, and political corruption to explain both its
origin and its development.

This discussion will be the eighth in our series "What Next? The Identity
Dialogues" where we delve into the questions of identity and belonging as
they are examined by the authors in their respective books. Vivek Menezes,
writer, photographer, and co-founder/co-curator of the Goa Arts and
Literature Festival will be in conversation with Ms. Faleiro.

[Goanet] Conversation with Dr. Shashi Tharoor

2020-12-10 Thread Leonard Fernandes
Hello,

On Saturday, 12 December, after six unprecedented online sessions, which
have featured a range of popular writers from around India and their
acclaimed new releases, the Dogears bookshop discussion series 'What Next'
will feature Dr. Shashi Tharoor, the third-term Member of Parliament for
Thiruvananthapuram, and a bestselling author of twenty-two books - both
fiction and non-fiction - and his new *The Battle of Belonging: On
Nationalism, Patriotism, And What it Means to Be Indian*.

Dr. Tharoor will be in conversation with Vivek Menezes, writer,
photographer, and co-founder and co-curator of the Goa Arts and Literature
Festival.

It is the latest unexpected, pandemic-times literary discussion highlight
for a series that has also featured the acclaimed and award-winning authors
Annie Zaidi, Jane Borges, Yogesh Maitreya, Parmesh Shahani, and Goa's own
Jason Keith Fernandes. The previous session, with the eminent 89-year-old
historian Dr. Romila Thapar was attended by audience members from
Australia, the USA and UK, Portugal, Brazil and all across India.

Divided into six sections, The Battle of Belonging starts off by exploring
historical and contemporary ideas of nationalism, patriotism, liberalism,
democracy, and humanism, many of which emerged in the West in the
eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and quickly spread throughout the
world. The author then summarizes India’s liberal constitutionalism,
exploring the enlightened values that towering leaders and thinkers like
Gandhi, Nehru, Tagore, Ambedkar, Patel, Azad, and others invested the
nation with.

This conversation, scheduled for Saturday 12th December at 7pm IST, will be
held online over Airmeet. "What Next? The Identity Dialogues" explores the
ideas of identity and belonging as interpreted by various writers in their
books.

Those wishing to join this conversation can use this link:

[Goanet] Book Discussion with Parmesh Shahani

2020-11-05 Thread Leonard Fernandes
Hello,

For 2 weeks now we have engaged with authors for a series of book
discussions we have called "What Next? The Identity Dialogues". These
conversations are moderated by Vivek Menezes, and involve books that speak
to the themes of identity and belonging. We started with Annie Zaidi's
Bread. Cement, Cactus, and last week we discussed the book Bombay Balchao,
with its author, Jane Borges.

This Saturday, we will be in conversation with Parmesh Shahani, whose
latest book, Queeristan is categorized as a business book but it is more of
a memoir and a prescription. Through personal anecdotes, he outlines how
companies could address and change the office culture in India where
homosexuality has been reduced to taunts and jokesm whether borne out of
ignorance or prejudice.

Join us this Saturday 7th November, at 7pm (via Zoom)

To join the Zoom conversation, use this link: http://bit.ly/convowithps

To purchase a signed copy, use this link: https://rzp.io/l/buyqueeristan

This series of discussions is brought to you by The Dogears Bookshop, in
association with Thus.

I am adding the poster for tomorrow's conversation, as also details of the
other sessions we have planned for November.

Looking forward to having you join in.

Warm Regards,
Leonard

[Goanet] Monsoon - Vimala Devi/ Paul Melo e Castro

2020-02-03 Thread Leonard Fernandes
Hello,

This is to inform you that copies of Monsoon are now available at The
Dogears Bookshop in Margao.

First published in 1963, two years after the Portuguese colony became part
of India, Monsoon (original title: Monção) is a cycle of twelve stories
that vary in tone. By turns satirical, desolate, tender, humorous and
dramatic, they come together through a subtle interplay of echoes,
parallels and cross-references to form a composite picture of a world gone
by. They delve into divisions of caste, religion, language and material
privilege, setting them off against a common historical experience and
deeply felt attachment to the land.

This rendition of Monsoon, which includes a critical and contextualizing
introduction by Jason Keith Fernandes, allows contemporary readers a rare
glimpse into a colonial society significantly different from the British
Indian mainstream, filtered through a language and mindset that barely
survives.

An article by the translator, Paul Melo e Castro, in the JRLJ can be read
here:
https://www.joaoroqueliteraryjournal.com/nonfiction-1/2019/5/14/vimala-devi-mono-and-me

For those unable to visit the store the book is available on our webstore:

worldwide.

[Goanet] Another reminder - PublishingNext @ GALF

2018-11-26 Thread Leonard Fernandes
Hello,

Goa-based Publishing Next in association with the Goa Art and Literature
Festival is organizing a series of panel discussions on topics that concern
the publishing industry in India. Established in 2011, Publishing Next has,
over the years, organized annual conferences that include panel
discussions, workshops, and masterclasses. It has been its effort to get
the best practitioners in the Indian publishing industry to sit together
and lay bare the problems and challenges faced by Indian publishers and
allied service providers. This latest round of panel discussions, scheduled
for 7th December 2018, at the International Centre, Goa, is another step in
that direction.

The two panel discussions focus on topics that have, of late, been on
everyone's minds. The first, titled "To Tell or Not To Tell : Dealing with
the ‘difficult’ in books for young readers" wil discuss if books published
for children and young adults empower them with the knowledge that they are
not alone in their battles, and encourage them to develop an empathetic
understanding of the world. In a complex society like ours, the panel will
discuss, how do we tell these stories. And how do we deal with the
consequent challenges of publishing and reaching the books to wider
audiences? The panel, moderated by Radhika Menon (Publisher, Tulika Books),
will include authors Paro Anand and Jerry Pinto, Sayoni Basu (Publisher,
Duckbill Books) and and (Goa's very own) Sujata Noronha (educator who
directs the work of Bookworm Trust - a library based organisation in Goa).

The second panel titled "Indian Language Literature at the Global Table"
will explore whether recent successes like Ghachar Ghochar and One Part
Woman suggest that the world is waking up to the riches of Indian
literature. Or if there is still a missing piece that needs attention. The
panel will discuss if Indian publishers are equipped to make the most of
the opportunity that this interest in Indian literature presents, and what,
if anything it will take for other Indian language books in translation to
find a larger acceptance globally, and replicate these recent successes.
Vinutha Mallya, presently Assistant Features Editor at Bennett Coleman and
Co. Ltd., and an advisor to the Publishing Next conference, will moderate
the panel. The other members of the panel include Shruti Debi, a literary
agent based in New Delhi; Maitreyi Karnoor, a poet and translator; Anurag
Basnet, Managing Editor at Speaking Tiger Books, and Vasudhendra, who runs
his own publication house, Chanda Pustaka, which publishes and encourages
new writing in Kannada.

The panel discussions, like most of the programme at the Festival is open
to all. There is no entry fee.

We sincerely hope you will be able to attend these sessions, and look
forward to seeing you there.

Warm Regards,

Leonard

[Goanet] Konkani translation of Jacob e Dulce

Apostle of the Indies). Does anyone here know where I might find a copy of
the Konkani translation?

Thank you.

With best wishes,

Leonard

[Goanet] Events at The Dogears Bookshop Next Month

2016-12-28 Thread Leonard Fernandes
Hello

We have a few events lined up for you next month, and hope you will find
the time to attend one or all of them.

*3rd Jan 2017*

Rana Ayyub will be reading and discussing from her book 'Gujarat Files'. It
is an eight month undercover investigation on the fake encounters and
Gujarat riots exposing the complicity of Politicians. In 2010, her
investigation on fake encounters landed the first serving Home Minister
Amit Shah behind bars. Posing as Maithili Tyagi, a student of the American
Film Institute Conservatory along with a French intern, she did a sting
operation on some of the top officials and bureaucrats in Gujarat. Tehelka,
the organisation for which she did this investigation refused to publish it
citing political pressure. Further two publication houses with whom she had
a contract eased out of it. When the mainstream media too looked the other
way, she self published the book in May 2016. From 500 copies to 4
copies, Gujarat Files is one of the success of the year 2016. In a review,
Business Standard called it India's entry to the Pulitzer.

Please gather by 6 pm for food, beverages and seats. The event is presented
in association with 6 Assagao.

*6th Jan 2017*

We continue with our monthly open mic poetry slam sessions, held on the
first Friday of each month. The session on the 6th begins at 5pm.

*14th Jan 2017*
*The Art of Translation: Practicalities, Pitfalls and Pratfalls*, a
workshop by Paul Melo e Castro, author and translator, will be held on 14th
January, 2017, at 4pm.

During this workshop, Dr. Castro will discuss his general translation
practice in terms of the compromises that must be made in shifting between
languages and the potential slip-ups that can occur when mediating between
languages, cultures and historical periods.

He will also discuss his translation of 'O Genro Comensal', a short story
by the Goan author, Vimala Devi. A copy of the translation will be shared
with the registered participants prior to the workshop, which will be
useful for anyone interested in translation as an idea or wanting to start
out publishing translations him or herself.

Those interested for the workshop may register with their email id and
telephone number by calling 88056 46643 / 98503 98530. A registration fee
of Rs. 100 per person will be charged.

We invite you to attend these events at the bookshop. Your continued

Re: [Goanet] [GOABOOKCLUB] Where is Goa in India's Internet Big Bang?

2014-08-16 Thread Leonard Fernandes
This is such a load of nonsense. For the last two weeks now, BSNL's
internet service in Margao has been erratic. The linesman is quick to point
out that the line is not to blame while the people manning the phones at
the Internet desk (don't know why they have separated the functions)
conveniently decide to ignore the phones.

This is not a one-off case either. Like everything else, everyone takes
things lying. Or perhaps no one has the time to chase the authorities and
get this done.

All the grandstanding aside, the situation on the ground (pun unintended)
is quite different. There is no value for either the time or productivity
lost. To begin with, India has classified 512kbps as high-speed internet
broadband, while the world over it 2Mbps or more.

The bills, though, come on time.

[Before someone complains that this is out-of-topic, I am quite sure it
isn't. Almost everyone, whether she is writing, editing, or translating, is
connected to the Internet these days and is equally at the mercy of this
erratic service. I am glad you brought this up, Vivek.]

 http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Where-is-Goa-in-Indias-internet-Big-Bang/articleshow/40311761.cms

2014 has already seen a cataclysmic shift in Indian politics with the
rise of Narendra Modi's BJP, but even that milestone takes second
place to another, related phenomenon—by the end of this year, there
will be more internet users in India than in the USA, a paradigmatic
 change of incalculable significance.

After many years trailing China and the developed world in web
connectivity—there were just 10 million Indians online as recently as
2005—the tsunami of affordable smartphones flooding the country is now
bringing 5 million new Indian users onto the internet every month.

In New Delhi earlier this week, managing director of Google India,
Rajan Anandan said by 2018, India will have twice the number of
internet users as the US. Almost half the country will be connected
through the internet. A lot of people talk about the last elections
and how urban India was mobilized. We have seen nothing yet in terms
of what the internet can do to every aspect of life, of society and of
governance. By the next elections almost half-a-billion Indians will
be connected. In terms of the kind of mobilization, can you imagine
 what it can do?

In the West, and other Asian countries like China, Japan and
especially South Korea, mass access to the internet has completely
remade the economic, cultural and social landscape. Tiny start-up
companies have become value juggernauts, vaulting far upstream to
surpass heavyweights that have been around for generations. There are
now clear signs that the same historic cycle is taking place in India.

Flipkart started operations just six years ago. Though it has become
India's largest internet retailer, it was founded by Sachin Bansal and
Binny Bansal (they are not related) as a small online bookstore.
Today, the company employs almost 10,000 people, including hundreds of
brand new 'crorepatis.' That is because Flipkart is now valued between
six and seven billion dollars—even India's biggest real estate company
DLF can't compete—and just days ago announced a billion dollars in new
funding, one of the largest rounds in world financial history.

That's very big news. But it was immediately overshadowed the very
next day by an announcement from Amazon.com (where the Bansals once
worked). Although the global leader entered India late, its chief
executive Jeff Bezos said India is on track to be our fastest country
ever to a billion dollars in gross sales. He confirmed plans to
double storage capacity and open five more warehouses. Amazon will
invest two billion dollars in India so our team can continue to think
big, innovate, and raise the bar for customers in India.

Beyond the presence of these instant behemoths, a vista of golden
opportunities faces every single Indian coming onto the internet in
this wide-open time of unlimited potential.

One of the most popular technology writers, Kevin Kelly of Wired says
there has never been a better time in the whole history of the world
to invent something. There has never been a better time with more
opportunities, more openings, lower barriers, higher benefit/risk
ratios, better returns, greater upside, than now. Right now, this
 minute.

That spirit of trying something new on the Net is everywhere in Goa.
New in-state retailers like urbanration.com and cooldukan.com have
many loyal customers, and most restaurants and bars handle most of
their marketing and advertising via Facebook.

There are other unique efforts, such as the spirited, 365

[Goanet] The focus on Indian languages at Publishing Next

2013-08-13 Thread Leonard Fernandes
http://www.indianprinterpublisher.com/news/Publishing_Next_in_3973.html

Publishing is as much about sub-cultures as it is about culture. Last
Sunday’s (11 August 2013) edition of the Indian Express described the
results of a survey that looked at and measured the linguistic landscape of
the country. In an article titled ‘India Speaks . . . 780 Ways,” it
reported on the Bhasha Research and Publication Centre’s recently published
Linguistic Survey of India. The Vadodara based centre, which has done
pioneering work in documenting both written and spoken languages in India
is headed by an unassuming Dr. Ganesh Devy who, in his own words, set out
“to celebrate and admire the finest of languages that India has.”

Ganesh Devy was a speaker at the Publishing Next 20l2 conference a year ago
where he shared his insights (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wgaf4kpgTJ0)
on the linguistic diversity of the country. He exhorted publishers to
incorporate the variety of Indian languages of India in their publishing
programmes instead of ignoring them and choosing to print in only a few
languages. India’s linguistic diversity needed not just protection, he
said, but also encouragement. He felt publishers alone were in a unique
position to do this. Dr. Devy further enunciated his ideas in a panel
discussion at the same conference, titled ‘Preservation of Oral Traditions
in India.’ Here he said that the local or native speakers of a language
must be given the freedom to develop their languages themselves instead of
a regiment of correctness being imposed. Languages, he implied, thrived in
a free environment giving the example of Argentina, where there are
probably more languages than in India but where a government edict has
suppressed the use of languages other than Spanish.

While conceptualizing Publishing Next, we understood that any conference
‘on the future of publishing in India’ was incomplete without the
discussion of Indian language publishing (for want of a better term). We
also understood that Indian language publishing was too broad a stroke
because each language and culture (or subculture) brings along its own set
of challenges and successes. However, there had to be a start and Indian
language publishing had to be discussed, no matter how small the space
given to it and how limited the discussion.

The first edition of the conference, in 2011, had a single panel discussion
on ‘India in Translation.’ (See it here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZBcx6Eyjfc). Moderated by Arshia Sattar,
the panel some of the challenges requiring addressal for a more meaningful
translation programme that captured the essence of the country’s literary
treasures in the current idiom. The panel agreed that it wasn’t enough only
to translate from Indian languages into English but that it was necessary
to also translate from one Indian language or vernacular to another.

At the second edition of Publishing Next in 2012, several sessions were
committed to Indian language publishing. K Satyanarayan, director of the
Chennai-based New Horizon Media and an advisor to Publishing Next,
suggested that since ‘Indian language publishing’ was too big a territory
to cover we should address the issue in small steps. In a panel session
quite ambiguously called ‘Indian Language Publishing’ (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7gr9S9yz44) speakers representing Konkani,
Hindi children’s literature, as well as Bengali, Marathi and Tamil
publishing gave the audience a snapshot of the trends and challenges in
these languages. Other sessions too addressed language -- such as a
workshop on the use of metadata in electronic books and the above-mentioned
panel on oral traditions.

In the third edition this year, we will continue this focus on Indian
languages. The panel on Indian language publishing will have speakers
representing Gujarati, Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada and Odiya publishing.
There will also be a panelists session ‘On cultivating readership in Indian
languages’ while the panel discussions on ‘ePublishing issues’ and
‘developing Indian content for global audiences’ will also explore the
impact of Indian languages on these pathways.

The continued focus of Indian languages has attracted publishers of
regional and vernacular languages to attend the Publishing Next conference
in large numbers. This can only mean huge opportunities for service
providers such as those who can provide ePublishing and other professional
and production services for Indian language publishers. The conference
intends to catalyze the creation of an ecosystem where publishers and
service providers of all hues can network and develop business associations.
