Perhaps Mr. Souza had been residing in Calcutta but as far as my knowledge goes
he hailed from Pilerne where his house still stands. If I am not mistaken his
son is in the Middle East and his daughter is a doctor.

As per my information the mines were owned by a gentleman from
Calcutta called Souza. Dempos were then into trading and shipping,
possibly barges.Ore was dug out by human labour, no machinery. The
Dempos entered the Souza company as managers and later became partners
to form Dempo-Souza. The story is that they encouraged Souza to drink
to his ruin, without getting drunk themselves.

My Grandfather Mr. M.M.P. deSouza owner of Souza mines that were then
divided by two Dempo brothers and changed to Dempo Souza was NOT sold to the
Dempos they were ROBBED from my grandfather.

Yes it is true he was born in Pilerne and the family house is still there.
He was sent to Calcutta to be educated. He then returned to Goa in 1958 and
started the mining industry with Salgaoncar. They were the founders of the
mining industry of Goa. My grandfather went on to creating business ties
with Japan which are maintained till today. Mitsui is one of them.

My grandfather died on November 8 1985. My dad never went to the Middle East
and neither of his two sisters were doctors. Neither of them ever lived in
India after 1960. They were all educated abroad. My aunts continued living
abroad and my dad (Micky deSouza) lived here and helped my grandfather with
the mines till the Dempos robbed us of it. NO! They never paid us. They
embezzled the company, tried to frame my grandfather and just took over the
mines. The court cases were lost because they bribed my Grandfather's lawyer
and the judge.

This is the accurate story. My grandfather NEVER drank to his ruin as quoted
by Eric BUT the Dempos would go to his house every evening to drink Scotch
because they were not allowed to have alcohol in their house and they were
forbidden to drink alcohol outside as well.

Any further information that you need on this subject can be provided. Being
the granddaughter of the mine owner I should be able to provide you with all
the details you require.

Regards,
Charmaine deSouza

[Goanet] Reporting on Villages in Goa

2010-02-09 Thread M DESOUZA
Hi All

This is also something that is well overdue.  How we could get people
preferably youngsters from our villages to report about the village, what
happens in our village, history etc lets see how we can take this forward.

It would be good to start with Saligao as  already taken steps to change the
way our village feast should function.  Frederick did also suggest this.

All the best

[Goanet] Snow pictures. By Jessica Desouza.

2010-01-27 Thread M DESOUZA
Hello All.
I'm Jessica de Souza, I'm 13 years old. I have some pictures of the snow in
England which I took myself. The snow carried on for about two weeks. It was so
bad schools were closed because the buses had stopped running! My sister,
brothers and myself had much fun in the snow. It was 7/9cm deep! First it
snowed on the 21st December 2009. Then when we thought the snow would thaw out,
it snowed again on the 6th January 2010. For about 2 weeks, the snow didn't
melt and it continuously kept on snowing. But finally it thawed out by the
21st. Now it is raining and the temperature is well above freezing. There is no
sign of further snow. The roads have been treated with salt and they are
currently free from ice. I recently was in Goa for Christmas with my dad and I
enjoyed it very much!
From Jessica.

[Goanet] Goan Indian Community UK

2010-01-18 Thread M DESOUZA
Hi Frederick - Please post this on the Net and try and spread this throughout
the Goan Community - something to think about.  In the UK the only thing that
Roque can say on the issue is that Goan Community in today's UK means Goan,
Indian and maybe religion. (What have Goans got in common with each other).

1.  If we asked you the meaning of 'Community' what would your answer be?

2.  If we asked you what the meaning of 'Goan Community' what would
     your answer be?

If you see the fundamental issue especially today is understanding
what the word Community is.  Without this everything else is irrelevant.
All the best to all
