nbsp;Hi Gabriel,
FYI, I currently live in Dubai. I don't think that I have my head in the sand.
I am aware of the good and bad sides of my country. But fortunately for me I
have been able to visit many different countries, including Australia, and have
only just returned from Canadanbsp; There is good and bad in all countries,
maybe more in mine but there is no point in pointing out the warts if you can't
do something about it. I was not referring to the commonwealth games per se,
but, if you look at posts from Ruby, you will notice that most of them are
links to bad press about India. Is there nothing good that ever happens in
India? Ruby does not seem to find them. For those who live in India on a
permanent basis, they don't need a prophet of doom waving black flags at them,
if you can do something to help, then go ahead. Do something! There are many
who do. I don't need to publish the names, they are all well known. If
Australia is Utopia! Well good for you! India is for me! All those who
  can
migrate to other countries, don't necessarily do! I have a lovely home in Goa,
I am happy to return there. With best regards

Ruby, you are like a vulture scouring sites for bad press about India. It
appears you are not a happy person. Why don't you enjoy your life and forget
about the problems that India has. Let your hair down, enjoy! Listen to some
good music, block all sites that show you how badly India is doing, the small
joys that you get when you read of their suffering will not bring you real joy,
so avoid them.

[Goanet] Jaago Re Jairam Ramesh

2010-05-15 Thread kaleon
Hi,

The Dhamra port in Orissa is not only threatening the Olive Ridley sea turtles,
it is also being constructed on forest land without permission from the Central
government.

Based on letters issued by its own officials, a case was filed against the
Ministry of Environment and Forest and the Orissa government in October last
year for violating the Forest Conservation Act, 1980. Till now neither have
filed a response before the Supreme Courtâs Central Empowered Committee.

Greenpeace is taking a petition asking environment minister Jairam Ramesh to
take a stand and the violation of the Forest Conservation Act.

I have already signed this petition. You can also sign it and ensure that
Jairam Ramesh takes necessary action.

[Goanet] Information regarding composters!

Hi Somebody was looking for composters, see message below!

Dirt cheap ways to grow green gold

By: Kasmin Fernandes
Date: 2009-05-06

Two new green initiatives help you grow your own organic food and keep garbage
out of landfills

The seed and peel of that delicious Alphonso mango you just gobbled up, is not
garbage. It is, in fact, fodder for growing organic veggies and herbs. Through
the simple and dirt-cheap process of composting with wet waste from your
kitchen, you could produce nutrient-rich compost every month that helps fruits
and herbs grow lush. Besides, you will end up reducing food miles (the distance
food travels from where it grows to where it is ultimately consumed), cutting
down on garbage crowding the landfills, and contributing to a cleaner city.

To aide eco-conscious urban dwellers in the process, eco-trailblazer Kishore
Karale from Wadala has come up with a vermicompost-cum-vermiwash starter kit.
The 47 kg drum, 3 ft tall and 1.5 ft in diameter uses earthworms and cowdung
and matka water. It turns raw green waste from the home and kitchen into rich
vermicompost in 15 days.

You can use the compost as a growing medium to support and nourish your garden
and indoor plants. quot;I began growing rosemary, thyme, oregano, lettuce and
three types of basil with the vermicompost. I've never seen herbs grow faster.
Plus, the food is organic and tastes great, quot; says businessman Hemant
Chhabra who distributes Karale's kit around Mumbai.

The vermiwash is another highlight of the kit. A brown-coloured liquid
fertiliser collected after passing water through a column of worm culture, is
rich in enzymes, hormones and vitamins and useful as a stimulating foliar
spray.

quot; The kit generates 750 ml of vermiwash and 100 to 200 gm of vermicompost
daily. You can start growing your own organic veggies at home. It works so well
with sufficient sunlight, you won't need a gardener, quot; vows Chhabra. To
order a vermicompost-vermiwash starter kit priced at Rs 1,400, e-mail

Daily Dump needs more clones
For Bangalore-based quot;compost waliquot; Poonam Bir Kasturi, keeping waste
off the streets was the goal behind creating Daily Dump, a range of aesthetic
terracotta composters available across the country through quot;clonesquot;.
quot; The model is open source. 'Clone' refers to anybody who sets up a
business of selling terracotta composters designed by Daily Dump, in their
locality. The person gets free knowledge and support from the 'Clone' community
and from Daily Dump. In return s/he will nurture and help create more 'clones'
in the region, quot; explains Kasturi. Bandra-based businessman Anil Ranglani
is a clone for Mumbai. At a gathering in Bandra to hone would-be clones from
Surat, Ranglani said, quot; You don't need to know everything before you decide
to start. All you have to do is start; you can learn along the way.quot;

[Goanet] No Criminals in Politics

2009-02-24 Thread kaleon

Enough of politicking, speeches and boring lectures. A new campaign against
criminalisation of politics will be fighting the menace with the new age
weapons of blogs, social networking sites like Orkut and Facebook and SMSes.

The campaign launched by Forum for Clean Politics under the Public Interest
Foundation will have a three-pronged strategy to ban the entry of criminals in
our political system.

In the first step, it will urge political parties not to give ticket to
candidates with criminal antecedents. Then, it will apprise voters about the
criminal history of candidates from their constituency through blogs,
advertisements, social networking sites and SMSes. In the third step, the
voters will be requested not to support any political party, which will field
candidates with criminal background.

Dr Bimal Jalan, Chairman, Public Interest Foundation and former RBI governor
said, quot;Criminals are the safest bet because they have higher winnability.
But it's time that we make wrong people feel that they are wrong and they don't
deserve to be a part of the government.quot;

quot; The cynicism against politics among the general masses has further
deepened the problem, quot; Dr Jalan said.
nbsp;
Speaking on the occasion, Rajya Sabha MP and auto tycoon Rahul Bajaj said:
quot;Governments are just the reflection of the people they rule because
ultimately they elect their representatives.quot;

quot;Let's not prevaricate. I have never heard any politician saying we want
to give ticket to a criminal. Yes, there have been cases but you cannot
generalise that all politicians are criminals, quot; Bajaj said.

quot;Being public figures politicians are easy targets. It's very easy to get
an FIR registered against a politician, quot; the eminent industrialist said.

According to the data provided by National Election Watch, of the 543 MPs in
the Lok Sabha, 128 have quot;confessedquot; to cases pending against them in
various courts of the country. There are 24 charges of murder or attempted
murder among various accusations.

quot; The country never deserved the government it had. We must make sure that
people who are running the government must not have a single person among them
who doesn't deserve to be there, quot; said legal luminary Fali S Nariman.

In its endeavour, the campaign has already partnered with several NGOs,
intelligentsia, academicians and industry bodies. Association for Democratic
Reforms and National Election Watch will provide data.

Subject: FW: A Dreaded Forest Act
The Scheduled Tribes and Other Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights)
Act, passed in Parliament in Dec 2006 is in the process of formally becoming
a law. Upto 4 hectares of forest land is proposed to be given to all those
who had occupied forest land before the 13th of December, 2005.

This Act is applicable to forest across the country - including wildlife
sanctuaries, national parks and tiger reserves. There are no provisions in
the Act to ensure forest protection / conservation. The Act opens forests to
dangerous privatization even though they are public property. A group of us,
ordinary folk with no political leanings, have got together to create
awareness of this issue. That's how Vanashakti was born. We want to protect
Man amp; Nature from destruction by power hungry, vote seeking politicians.

If you want to help, please sign the petition on

Really Selma!!! I have lived most of my life in the Gulf, i.e. Bahrain,
Muscat, Doha and now in Dubai, but I cannot claim to knowing the Arabs and
their forklifts very well, perhaps you could educate us??? ;-))

Dear Judaline,
I'm sorry I upset you. No excuses only apologies.

By the way, I do know the Arabs well. Lived my entire
life in Dubai and loved every second of it. Hope
you're having fun too.

Selma

I realise that you have a problem, but I have not seen any solutions coming
up so far on Goanet, so..

I wish you all the very best in your future endeavours.
