Even taking into account the typo related to 'is' vs 'was', is there any verifiable evidence that Jose Vaz practised the caste system or even wore the 'Brahmin' label on his forehead? I also find it difficult to accept that the practice of caste is a cardinal sin (whatever that means). The term 'sin' is commonly applicable to Christians. Those who practice the caste system could not be Christians. jc

The fact that Jose Vaz is a Brahmin is a fact. In fact, many, many years I think I wrote somewhere that the case of Vaz preceeded at a much faster rate than that of Fr. Agnelo. Those in the foiefront of the Vaz movement belong to the same caste. The Fr Agmelo was allegedly not promoted with the same vigious. When enquired with people who were aware of the politics behind Fr. Agnelo's case had been stuck because of lack of miracle/s. There was talk that the Pope would be approached to declare him saint without the formal adherence to the process. As we know, the Pope waived the need for a second miracle. The process for canonization is complex. We have to wait and see. Casteism should have no place in religion, and should be avoided from making it big. Those who do so are committing a cardinal sin, and Fr. Jose Vaz must interceed with the Lord. Eugene

Dear Jason, Please do not get hypertensive when Brahmins (ie Hindus) feel proud of Jose Vas or Joseph Vaz. From all accounts, it appears that his forebears were among the Hindu Brahmins who converted to Christianity and with that turned their backs on the caste apartheid and on their surnames. http://www.colaco.net/1/caste.htm I will need to research a bit more ( cannot do that while I am not at home base ) but I believe that at least Sant Gynaneshwar preceded Jose Vaz. jc Brahmin (Brāhmaṇa, ब्राह्मणः) is the class of educators, law makers, scholars and preachers of Dharma in Hinduism http://www.unp.me/f15/brahmin-br-hma-a-64527/#ixzz3EKmdcaNR

[Goanet] Catholic Church and Salcete
The first Indian Cardinal was Valerian Gracias whose father hailed from Dharmapur in Chinchinim village and his mother was from Navelim. The first Goan Saint of the Catholic Church , St Jose Vaz was born in his mother's house near Patrocinio Chapel in Benaulim and his father hailed from Sancoale village which was, at that time ,still in Salcete taluka. May be, when St Jose Vaz was born exactly at noon time, there was an eclipse of the sun because some claim that all stars in the firmament above shone brightly on that fateful noon. St Jose Vaz has a rare distinction of belonging to a Brahmin Catholic family. St. Jose Vaz could be considered as the first Brahmin Saint in the world.
