That's very well put. In elections, what choices do we have? Between bad
and worse. So let us go for the bad :-) But, as Miguel says, the job is
not now but post-elections, pre-elections and all the time.

Of course, Parrikar would not agree with this. His fascist streak was
clearly present in one of his statements that I remember (in response to
the IFFI and mega-project protests): The people have elected me and if
they don't like what I am doing, they can vote against me in the next
elections. This is the man's understanding of democracy -- a once every
five years ritual at the hustings!

Dears,

Mr. Manohar Parrikar accepted the proposal of K3 and invited me to a private
audition with him at the Assembly Complex on 01 March, 2007. By 'private' I
mean PRIVATE..just he and me. It was 01 March, not April Fool. I am neither
Churchill's brother nor joking. I am really serious...fortunately not 'dead'
serious.

A week ago, an interview of Mr. Manohar Parrikar was published in the
Navhind Times. It contained a reference to 'judgement of error'. He told me
that the VCD was perhaps an 'error of judgement'. He implied that I had also
made an error of judgement in branding him 'communal' after I detected the
goddamned VCD on 18 December, 2004 in a school and raised Kane. He told me
that he is not communal at all, that most BJP party workers in Goa were not
communal, either.

He told me that the VCD was shown to the press at Hotel Mandovi in December,
2002. It was telecast on Doordarshan [National TV] on 19 December, 2002. It
was based on a history book in Marathi published during Pratapsingh Rane's
previous term as CM. Its script was scrutinised by Comrade Flaviano Dias and
Libia Lobo Sardessai. They are not communal [just anti-church, if one may
grant]. All that is TRUE, I told him. However, it is also true that the VCD
,in one burst of sudden Government efficiency, was delivered personally by
the Asst.Dist Education Inspectors [ADEI] or senior officials on 17 or 18
December, 2004 with instructions to show it to the students after flag
hoisting on 19 December, 2004. He DENIED that. The VCD was sent to the
schools for their LIBRARY RECORDSby peronal delivery. I do not know if
you can believe that. It does not go down well with me.

19 Dec. is one day in the year when the nationalist feeling[
anti-Portuguese, if one would call it] runs rife in Goa. It is a wonderful
day to criticise the missionaries. Most of us are familiar with the
missionary position. It brings one down on one's knees. that happened to the
BJP in January, 2005.

I supported Mr. Manohar Parrikar as a man of integrity, even though he was
part and parcel of the BJP. Today that is tough. As Mark Twain once
wrote. It is easier to find a woman who has never sinned than one who has
sinned just once. Ditto for a man.

Jose wrote I believe that Goans today are faced with three choices ... (1)
a Rock (2) A Hard Place and (3) a third choice that Fred Noronha is
threatening to come up with ...but hasn't. The third choice is very, very
difficult to find in most constituencies. The MGP and the UGDP may offer
some alternatives in some. I doubt the Congress and NCP can give us anyone
but the 'rejects' and the 'veterans' of yesteryears...and Churchill does not
even know how to say, Where's the Party tonight? Charisma without
intelligence is like advertising without a product...what can one profit if
there is no saleable product? We will have to 'weigh' our choices...and
choose the lightweight...he is ithe easier burden to bear for five years.
The heavy-weights have given us spondylitis just keeping track of their
actions on the internet!

Roland Francis wrote: With regard to the recent international markets

sudden plunges in the Shanghai and other Chinese Stock Markets...

Now if the same program could somehow forecast the Manohar Parrikar win in
the Goa May 2007 elections, the D'Cruz sofware would be as widely
distributed in Goan schools as the infamous Parrikar VCD

Rajan Parrikar wrote thus about Fred Noronha:

[FN]wrote that intellectually dishonest screed in EPW on the VCD for which
I issued a rebuttal on scig (and didn't hear a peep from you about it).

=== jc's response ===

re: the Roland Francis post:

I hope that, some day, we will resolve not to involve children in our
cyber-rants - esp when these children are not personally part of the rave
and rant club.

Just because K3 behaves in the sad way he does, does not mean that we have
to join him by behaving like him.

That infamous VCD is another reason that Goans may wish to pause and think.
What was the purpose behind that VCD? Why was such a bogus and communally
spun VCD produced and distributed in the schools? Do Goans wish to return to
the VCD days? Perhaps, they do.

Then again, what choices (read Goveian choices) do Goans have?
===
re: the Rajan Parrikar post:

I'd say that it is unfair to GoaNet readers that Rajan is slamming Fred on
GoaNet about something that was posted somewhere else (SCIG).

I suggest that those FN views and the rebuttal from Rajan be posted on
GoaNet. Let others be the judge. May be Fred was intellectually dishonest.
May be Rajan is being unfair to Fred. May be, both have valid points. May be
...not.

From my point of view, I personally find the 'mirsangh' in the spat these
two are having quite puzzling. After all, Fred is a regular down to earth
and hard working journo with tremendous daily output, and Rajan's photo
essays are crucial to Goan awareness of what is happening to their homeland.

It is possible that both have their minuses (like surely, all of us do) but
on the balance of probabilities it is my opinion that both have a lot
positive to offer. Something which is being obscured with this Ambott-Tikk
in public.

Never mind the 'pretence of having honest difference or public airing of
opinions - so crucial in a vibrant democracyetc etc
just my view

Dear Rajan,

Thank you for the courtesy of your response. As a person who has seen the
VCD, all I say is that it is despicable. No sensible or decent Goan could
have perpetrated that obscenity on one's brother Goan.

You may have gathered by now that I have a very healthy disrespect for
politicians. I admired Manohar Parrikar both because he had intellect and
also because we had dodo heads as alternatives.

A person ( related to my God-child) who I consider my friend called me one
day from the UK inviting me to leave what I am doing here and join him in
helping the BJP throw out the corrupt Congress crooks out of power in Goa.

I almost did.

I however told him that I would think about it - as I do not trust
politicians. In my view, they are different shades of the same crookedness.

Then, I spent a few days reviewing the antecedents of the BJP. I came to
the conclusion that (Whatever they say) the BJP are the public face of
the Hindu Maha Sabha. Growing up in Poona, I had seen enough of them. They
were no better than the Salazarists in Goa, or the Right Wing Christian
bigots in the West. I thought to myself .If I would not even spend one
second of my time to support the Righties that the Goveians support, or the
merciless Thatcherites why would I support these 'neo-incarnations with
gloss' of those very people who spread hate in this world. It would be akin
to supporting the Catholic IRA or the Protestant UDV or the Mugabes,
Pinochets, Castros, Sadaams or os senhores 'Jorges ani Deeks' of this world.

I turned down the invitation of my friend Aires Rodrigues.

He returned to Goa.canvassed heavily for the BJP and the rest is
history.

Even so, I thought Isn't it better to have Parrikar there than Churchill
Alemao ? and I thought ...It is.

I was very disappointed by his 'compromise of principles' when he made
allowances convenient enough to capture the chair. He made deals with the
very same crooks who are presently presenting you with the opportunity to
use your delightful digital camera.

Then came the totally despicable VCD.

I believe that Goans today are faced with three choices ... (1) a Rock (2)
A Hard Place and (3) a third choice that Fred Noronha is threatening to come
up with ...but hasn't.

I will submit that IF you have not seen the despicable VCD . you are
opining about the BJP without having complete background info.

I would have accepted it IF you had seen the despicable VCD and then come
to the same conclusion you now are at.

About the tone of your discussion with Fred Noronha, I'd say this . It
is discouraging that two (out of many) Goan individuals who can be of such
usefulness to the future of Goa are having such a 'picante' discussion
at such base levels.

As my good e-friend Prof Ranjan Sardessai (from Margao and Texas) often
says ... We Goans should not think of ourselves as Hindus or Christians (or
others ... as FN says he thinks like), we should think of ourselves as
Goans.

If not those who are not Goans will come, divide us and destroy the
Goan ethos and communal harmony we now enjoy and ...which might become
extinct along with Amchem Goem.

just my view
