[Goanet] Goa liberation day
Instead of Liberation it should be renamed as forced incorporation of Goa. Those who registered in Portugal are facing a tough time, not knowing their future. Portugal continues the registration because of the events of 1961, which many Goans do not know. If it was liberation Goans would not have this privilege. [Goanet] GOA LIBERATION DAY 59th anniversary
- On 31st December, 1974 i.e over 45 years ago the Indo-Portuguese treaty was signed. Portugal recognised the full sovereignity of India over then Goa Daman & Diu besides Dadra Nagar Haveli . Hence whether Goa, Daman & Diu besides Dadra Nagar Haveli was annexed, liberated, conquered on 19th December, 1961 after 451 years of Portuguese rule commencing on 25th November 1510 is akin to a freedom fighter in one country being labelled a terrorist by the other - The visit of President of India R Venkatraman to Portugal in 1990 and visit of his counter part Mario Soares to India in 1992 has further sealed the distrust between the two nations - The only valid point which in the humble opinion of this writer can continue as a point for arm chair debate is how could a country like India adopt armed intervention over the Portuguese dominions which existed 440 years before India became a Republic in 1950. - Thus before the emergence of the NEW INDIA on 15th August, 2022 lets us usher in a new era in Goa with a changed mindset. - History will always be recorded at various foras but thats all Godfrey J. Re: [Goanet] GOA LIBERATION DAY 2015 ALERT
The Goa Su-Raj party questions Goa's Liberation whether the state i "truly liberated or re-colonized." The issue of Liberation is different today as it was at the time during the time in 1961 and during the freedom movement. What happens after a nation is set free of political subjugation is a different matter. Many nations, including South Africa, has gone into economic and political trouble. As for India, many may hold the view that India isn't actually "free". Those who cherish freedom, no matter what the cost, are sad in a way that things don't look rosy. The leaders of freedom movement paid heavy price, and most of these frontline leaders are gone. Their work cannot be forgotten. One recollects what Winston Churchill said about India seeking freedom from the British: “Power will go to the hands of rascals, rogues, freebooters; all Indian leaders will be of low calibre & men of straw. They will have sweet tongues and silly hearts. They will fight amongst themselves for power and India will be lost in political squabbles. A day would come when even air and water would be taxed in India.” However, India survives in whatever form it's today. In a similar vein, Goa will survive. One can talk about the Liberation issues, but for a party that wants to represent the people, particularly the new generation of post-Liberation Goans, it must serious rework its platform. No point in having a roadmap that could lead Goa back to its sad part of history. History cannot be remade, and the party must win votes -- and hearts -- of people by new strategy that can take Goa into the future. Fighting corruption is a MUST. Fighting history is a vain exercise. As much as the British won't be back in Goa, the Portuguese episode is over. Fighting freedom fighters cannot gain votes. It's a sideshow, and should remain at that. A silent protest by two of them holding black flags doesn't convey much. It's like straws in the wind. Some will blow hot air. Like rising ballons they will go up first and come down somewhere. We were Liberated, per se. One cannot bring the issue of Liberation to relate to current condition of Goa. Goans themselves are responsible for it. He still believes that 1961 was liberation and not annexation. He denotes only a part of what Nerhu had said and conveniently forgets that he had promised special status for Goa to protect our Identity and our culture. What has he and his party done to get for Goa and Goans, he is just trying to get some popularity before the elections, nothing less nothing more. Goa and India is suffering because we elect such spineless politicians. [Goanet] Goa Liberation Day be celebrated as Svatantryapurti Divas at National Level
Goa Liberation Day be celebrated as Svatantryapurti Divas at National Level Mr Shantaram Naik M.P. has demanded that 19th December, which is Goa’s liberation Day, should be celebrated, at the National level, as Svatantryapurti Divas as it is with Goa’s liberation only, that India’s freedom was complete. Making a special mention in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, Mr Naik said that when India was liberated on 15th August 1947, the territories of Goa, Daman Diu were under Portuguese rule. We could see the dawn of freedom in the country except on our land for there was no Mahatma Gandhi in Goa, he said. Besides, Goa was under Portuguese Rule while rest of the part of the country was under British regime which collapsed under Mahatma Gandhi's non-violent non-cooperation movement, he said. Mr Naik said, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was kind and gracious enough to say that India's freedom became complete only when Goa was liberated. In a letter written by him to late Shri Chandrakant Keni, a Goan writer, on 20th December 1961, Nehruji said It may be said that with the freedom of Goa, India herself is more free. Thus far India's freedom was incomplete. When Nehruji visited Goa in May 1963, he repeated his views that it is with Goa's freedom only that India's freedom was complete and rightfully so. How could anyone say that India has achieved freedom when a part of it, however small it may be, was under foreign domination, Mr Naik said in his special mention. Goa has entered this year in the 50th year of it's independence and programes and functions are arranged by the State Government on the occasion of its Golden Jubilee year to be held throughout the year, Mr Naik said. Dear Mr. Naik, Greetings. Requesting this bit of info from you. 1. Goa Legislative Assembly is on record to have passed an unanimous resolution on August 30, 2008 that Goa should get Special Status to save its land, ethos and culcuture just like Mizoram et al. Is this a fact??? ... motions having been moved by Reginald Lourence (Curtorim) and Francis D'Souza (Mapusa) 2. Has this resolution been conveyed to the Center?? If so, when?? Re: [Goanet] Goa Liberation Day
Dear Arwin, The real Goan freedom fighters are still waiting for a liberation day: A true Goan Liberation Day. What some of us call liberation cannot be considered liberation in the eyes of international law. Regarding the events of 18 Dec 1961, both the Republic of India and Portugal were members of the UN. The Republic of India had recognized the Portuguese State in the Indian subcontinent as a neighboring country administered by Portugal and even held a general consulate of India there up to early 1955. So there is no doubt that the Portuguese presence in the Indian subcontinent was accepted and recognized by the Republic of India. The Portuguese State (Goa, Damao, Diu, Dadra and Nagar-Aveli) in the Indian subcontinent became in * 1951 * a province of Portugal in an integral part of Portugal (no longer a colony) and was listed in the official UN list of internationally recognized provinces that both Portugal and the Republic of India were signatories. The events of 18th December 1961 will always be recorded in the history books as an illegal invasion, an act of aggression, a clear violation of UN resolutions and International Law. No doubt, a very dark episode in Nehru’s life which damaged his reputation and his international image forever, for which Nehru still receives criticism today from some of his fellow Indian colleagues that worked under him. Those who know and understand the truth do not hesitate in criticizing Nehru for his illegal actions even today. The Republic of India calls it: an act of conquest. This is what the Supreme Court of India determined. Yes, the Supreme Court of India has determined that Goa was conquered from the Portuguese on the 19th Dec 1961. So you see, what really happened according to the Republic of India was a conquest. Not a liberation. Liberation is the term used (*wrongly!*) by some of us Goans because we would really like to think we have been liberated. But anyone who would care to do some research on this subject would easily find out that the reality is far from that. Conquest was the only way to make it legal from the Indian Union point of view. And they did it through a Supreme Court of India determination. Of course they forgot that we were already in the XX century and conquests just do not make any sense anymore. Especially after the foundation of the United Nations. So, you see, we Goans have been conquered by the Portuguese centuries ago and remain today conquered! The only difference is that we changed masters and our new conquerors are the Republic of India - a country that is in existence for little more than 60 years or so. A country that may perhaps only have ethnicity in common with us Goans. Yes it could have been liberation. It could have! But it was not! Kuwait was liberated from Iraq in the 1990s. But Goa was not liberated. In my opinion, 19th Dec 1961 could have been a liberation only and only if Nehru had allowed Goans to hold a plebiscite to decide the future of Goa and if Goans had chosen to allow accession to India via that democratic plebiscite. But Nehru did not allow us to hold a plebiscite and we will never know if the majority of us Goans wanted to go down the route of accession or not. True, Goa is today a state of India and has some degree of independence but it remains one of the only states of India that did not officially agree to accession to India. There was no instrument of accession signed and there was no instrument of merger signed. Annexation was imposed on us Goans. Goa * did not * sign any instrument of accession. But every other state did in 1947 or in the years after 1947. Of course any discussion about this today will always be purely academic… But it is sad that some of us Goans cannot recognize the truth. Just to finish, in response to your question, there was no instrument of accession to India. There was no plebiscite on that matter despite several requests to hold one and there were no options given to Goans. We were conquered by India on the 19th Dec 1961. I know, the truth hurts but how anyone can call it “liberation” is beyond my understanding. Many are now calling it conquest, which is quite correct. That is what the Republic of India says it happened on the 19th Dec 1961 and only some of the stubborn ones amongst us continue to believe we have been liberated! The real freedom fighters were betrayed by both India and Portugal. By India because it refused to hold a plebiscite and by Portugal because it closed the issue in 1975 by recognizing the illegal annexation of Goa by the Republic of India despite several complaints from Goans and requests to continue the de facto administrative power in Goa until a resolution could be achieved in the UN for the future of Goa (as it happened few years ago in East Timor where Portugal did not recognize the illegal annexation by Indonesia and remained the administrative power in East Timor according to the UN until the territory was handed
[Goanet] Goa Liberation Day
December 19th is celebrated as Goa's Liberation Day. I no longer want to celebrate the latter; because with every passing day, it looks more like the Liberation of Goa from the Goans; rather than from the Portuguese. With all due respect to all freedom fighters, I would really request to know, what really happened in 1961? With key strong factors on our side (A) The United Nations behind Goa, stating self-determination (B) Goans being aware of constitutional provisions to states like Kashmir etc. I really can't digest the fact that, Goans so easily agreed to accession, without any safeguards. Apologies, if I missed something or not aware of certain facts: In which case, please can someone enlighten me? Arwin Mesquita, Abu Dhabi.
Re: [Goanet] Goa Liberation Day
Dear Arwin, Remember Dr. Jose Francisco Martins of Paitona, Salvador do Mundo?. He was the Freedom Fighter and he had given his life sort of to see that Goa got liberated from the Portuguese. You know what he wished before he died? First off, he died of a very broken heart and of downright humiliation at the hand of Goa Government and especially the Goa Police. These are he very words which were said to me when I went to see him after his 'nightmare' with the police. If you have not heard of it, he was dragged to the police station at some ungodly hour in his underpants, not even giving him the time to wear his clothes. The PI who did that is now masquerading as the Dy.Sp. If I had anything to do with it, I would have sacked this brute outright. I would do it if I have anything to do with it in the future. It is a promise. And it will be good for you to find out who was in the hottest seat in Goa at that time. I did a mistake of my life having fought the Portuguese and helped to send them away, he had said to me with tears rolling down his eyes I wish I had the strength to fight to bring the Portuguese back. And I know very well that it is not the Portuguese that Dr. Jose Francisco Martins wanted back. The regrets for what he had fought for were eating him up. I wrote about this when he died. The piece I wrote is somewhere on our website under 'comments on news reports'. The past reports are not accessible but will be soon, a technical problem. Our so called freedom fighters were only happy to hand over Goa to the hypocrites who gave tall promises without having the sense to extract written down safe-guards. Why? The were only happy to be listed for life pension for a job well done? Of course, I am not painting all freedom fighters with the same brush but I would like to see the existing list of freedom fighters culled to such an extent that all false freedom fighters including the 'fakes' removed from the list and all the pension collected by them taken back retrospectively. In reality, the actual freedom fighters will be only a handful but the list is full of hypocrites going down as freedom fighters. The priority agenda for GOA is to liberate Goa from these hypocrites and chamchas who are taking Goa down down down. And this is the sole mission of the Goa Su-Raj Party. floriano goasuraj - Original Message - From: Arwin Mesquita [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Goanet [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, April 15, 2008 10:22 PM Subject: [Goanet] Goa Liberation Day December 19th is celebrated as Goa's Liberation Day. [Goanet] Goa Liberation day, mining and Police threats in Goa
* * * * *http://www.goanet.org* * * * * Stage Play: ON THE HOLY TRAIL Staged By: The Mustard Seed Art Company Where: Kala Academy - Mini Open-air Auditorium When: Dec 20 21, 2007 @ 7pm Read a Review at: http://lists.goanet.org/pipermail/goanet-goanet.org/2007-December/066558.html Even while Goa celebrated its Liberation day yesterday with various flags hosting in various parts of Goa, for the villagers of Cavrem in Quepem and Colamb in Sanguem it was different story; they faced police threats for protesting against the open cast mining threats. Ever since Gawada Kunbi Velip and Dhangar Federation (GAKUVED) organised its Human Rights Day Rally in Quepem town, mining industry is at the receiving end with number of villages gearing to battle mining industry. In Caurem village in Pirla Panchayat limit villagers stormed three mining sites of different mining companies such as Fomentos, Dinar Tarcar, and brought the entire process of operation to the grinding halt since December 11 2007. In Colamb group of villagers entered Fomentos mining site operated in lease area of Khodidas Hiralal forced the company to the work on December 19 2007. Police from Quepem Police station came searching the villagers at 11.50 am on December 19 2007. However they were forced to beat hasty retreat away by the angry village women of Colamb. In Cavrem village, Fomento mining company throw its contractor Ashok Naik threatened the villagers led by Kushali Velip with forcibly starting this illegal mining activity with the deployment of 600 Personnel from Goa Police force. According the reports received late last evening, Fomento mining company was busy coercing the villagers to enter into the agreement to start mining activity again with the promise that it will finance renovation of existing temple in Cavrem village at the cost of Rs.2 Crores, a promise that company had given to the villagers during past three and half years. It is now remains to be seen if this carrot and stick policy of the mining company works on the villagers. If Fomento mining company succeeds in getting 600 police personnel for Goa Police and re-start its illegal mining activity then it would be understood that Avdooth Timblo is Goa's de facto Home Minister that posseses such a command to violate human rights of Cavrem adivasi villagers and s lit open pristine green mountains of Maina-Cavrem. Time is going to be the greatest witness as to how things are going to unfold in near future. In the meanwhile GAKUVED organised Public interactive meeting in Cavrem, Quepem to asses the fruits of Goa Liberation for the adivasis of Goa on December 19 2007. Durgadas Gaonkar, GAKUVED Presedent, highlighted the role of Colamb Communidade is marginalizing and ultimately eliminating Velips from the Communidade records of the village. Kushali Velip from Cavrem village explained the problems faced by the villagers due to open cast iron mining and how the villagers united to assert thier rights. Rama Velip from Colamb shared his views about tackling mining industry of Goa and need to creat inter village solidarity to stop official government machinery and mining industry harrasing the villagers. Ulhas Gaonkar from Morpilla shared about the ongoing struggle of his villagers against proposed Bauxite mining on Quepem-Salcete border covering 300 hactares of fertile land. He aslo shared about struggle against Vijay Mallya's proposal to set beer factory and villagers opposition to the same. Advocate John Fernanades from Ambaulim explained that most of the people who took money from mining companies and sold thier land have suffered in thier lives. He also touched upon the depletion of water table due to mining that is going to cause in the Cavrem village in case mining begins again. Devidas Gaonkar from Khotigao explained about harrasment meted out to the adivasis inside Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary and registered his protest about the same. Anand Velip dealt on the great suffering of agriculture caused because of mining in Sanguem Taluka. He also shared his experience in fighting mining company in his village of Valkini in Sanguem taluka. Motesh Antao of Colamb stressed need for mining truck drivers to engage in protest against mining industry as the drivers job as well as life of their truck is short term while the agriculture that is being destryed by mining industry is a sustainer for generations together. Sebastian Rodrigues, Cordinator of MAND explained how Portugues colonial legacy in Goa is being perpetuated through mining industry and congratulated the villagers for opposing mining in thier village though various means including by

How did people react to the bombings of the AIR and the borim bridge? They have received the type of representation they got paid or fed to vote for. 3: I do not inderstand why so many people are jumping up and down because non Goans are buying up stuff...in Goa. Do they not have the right to do so? 4: As far as I know, AIR (Goa) was never bombed by anyone. I do know that the Emissora Radio station was bombed and its quite powerful radio transmittor removed - possible for use as an external services transmitter. 5: I notice that the Navy has the title for Dabolim...Hanh!? 6: Talking about Land titles May I ask how the title of the land near Grace Church in Margao changed hands about 6 years ago? Perhaps Adv Aires Rodrigues will care to advise us. Does he know anything about that case?
