Dear Mr Menezes What about my village of Borda in Salcete what does it mean a border in Portuguese, and what was it called before the Portuguese i am not saying the original name was changed. And what about my Mum's village of Comba or Mungul or Seraulim near Colva. Any explanation would be most welcome. Thanking you in advance' Ignatius Fernandes. _ Imagine a life without walls. Dear Ignatius, Your query (Dec 18) is most welcome. I do not claim to possess knowledge of the Sanskrit language, leave alone of Kanada but I shall answer you to the best of knowledge. Seraulim is known as Sural'le in konkani language but the Konkan railway station has already been sanskritized as Suravalli.Mungul is a hamlet but is part of Margao and so are Borda and Comba, wards of Margao. Borda as you have already stated could possibly have been derived from the Portuguese border and Comba appears to be a genuine konkani name. By the way Comba is the ancestral home of today's Margao moneybags. Thinking of borders, I believe , old Margao's southernmost border was the road in front of the Post Office. All areas beyond it were parts of the Navelim village which were appropriated or misappropriated by the then colonial authorities in order to make way for Margao's new market area called Novo Mercado. So Margao Municipal Garden, Municipal Building,Fazenda or Collector's Office ,Grace Church,Police Hdqtrs (South) ,Loyola H.School, Fatima Convent,State Bank of India old Railway Station, not to speak of the bustling market area itself, were in olden times parts of the Navelim village. Gilbert Lawrence ( Dec 13 ) asks:: ''Do we know the original names of the villages prior to the arrival of the Portuguese and the changes in their names ? '' Response: It is quite a valid point. I think I should not have used the word 'change' though I had subsequently corrected myself by saying they altered village names. Here is a story I had heard during my school days.In the nineteen or the eighteen century a primitive survey of Goa was carried out by the Portuguese surveyors with the assistance from mestisso subordinates for whom konkani was a strange language. When a survey team reached Guirim they asked local villagers for the name of their village to which they replied Girvod`dea. The mestisso subordinate wrote down Guir but was at loss to understand 'vod`dea' so he simply said Sim,Sim, Guirim i.e. yes, yes it is Guirim' The following are a few examples how konkani names were twisted by the Portuguese surveyors. Salcete: Benaulim ( Banavle), Betalbalim ( Berpatte)l Cavelossim (Kelshe), Sernabatim (Shirbatte).Loutulim ( Lotle or Rotre)Telaulim ( Torale),Seraulim (Surale) Colva ( Kolleam). Ilhas : Agassaim ( Agashe ), Chorao ( Chodnea ) Jua (Zumvear) Ribandar (Raibondra) Bardez: Aldona ( Oidonnea) Arpora ( Adfaddea) Assonora ( Asnodea) Bastora (Bostodde) Calangute (Kongotte) Antonio PS.Please Goanetters do correct konkani versions where necessary and please come out with more konkani village names for the benefit of other Goanetters.

Dear Antonio, The book written by Fr Joseph Vellinkar (he's at St Xavier's College Bombay), on the origin of Goan village names, makes for an interesting read. From the little I remember, the 'lim' ending you mention, is the abbreviated form of the Sanskrit 'halli', meaning hamlet. -- Forwarded message -- Dears, It is said that Siolim was Shiva halli or Shivoli Benaulim was Bann-a- halli Vanelim was Vana halli while Panjim was Panjak halli. Halli is a current Kannada word meaning village or hamlet. Dravidian language though the Devanagri Konkani lobby may callit,Kannada has more Sanskrit roots than Marathi. The word Angodd is also derived fromn the current Kannada wardAngddi meaning shopping place or even a ghaddo Goa , for most part of its pre-colonial era was a part of Karnataka-based Kingdoms from Vijaynagar, Bahamani, Bijapur, Sonde or evenKadambas of Banavasi, near Sirsi.
