Re: [Goanet] No Cafe Tato website?
http://www.GOANET.org This month's Goanet operations sponsored by Mrs. Daisy Faleiro If you would like to sponsor Goanet's operations contact: Herman Carneiro - [EMAIL PROTECTED] Rajan, you would probably agree with me that part of our collective information poverty in Goa is that most tiny businesses (or even not-so-tiny ones) lack a cyber presence of their own. We need to recognise this, acknowledge it, and prioritise it. To me, being information-poor is worse than facing the fate of corruption or communalism (we can fight these with information!) or even losing control over large tracts of land! Without information, we can't even identify our problems, and would be fighting against windmills instead of real issues. There would be no space for negotiating space, and understanding each other's point of view, either. As they say, it's better to jaw-jaw than to war-war. I've offered a good restauranteur friend to build a website for him. For free. His answer: I'll think about it. Let me see.I'll have to ask I've also booked a domain name for another bookseller friend of mine. No names here; you can easily guess... knowing my biases. Just need a little time to get it up and running. We've used some very simple-to-use and helpful Free Software to build a CMS of sorts (content-management solution). The we here prefers primarily to Derek Cordeiro, a young techie friend, now in second year of GEC, probably sitting on the same benches you sat (as did Ashank Desai) in another day and age. A techie friend in London has given me free webspace to use on his server. If anyone wants to set up a webpresence, we could make this possible. There have been other friends who are generous in giving space online (Goacom.org, Goa-World.net, etc). Please see http://www.goa-india.org But we all need to work to build a solution towards this. Ask our friends at Tatos if they want to get an online presence, at no cost. The .info domains are currently very cheap in India (but it's not clear how much renewal would cost) at about Rs 120 per year or a little more. Space is free. We need volunteers to work on this. We could set up some volunteer network like a GoaCorps to specially work on online volunteer projects like this. After all, any project should be sustainable and scalable. FN On 28/02/07, Rajan P. It is a pity that that great Panjim (and Goan) institution is still without its own space on the web. This seems to have diminished now with the advent of the Cafe Coffee Day manner of establishments. Warm regards, r Be a PS3 game guru. But I may go ahead and book the cafetato.in domain. My focus here is not information for information's sake. The trio of Tato, Bhonsle and Real (Cafe Central, too) is a crucial part of our capital city's heritage and very little is documented (online or otherwise) by way of their history, offerings and their evolution (or not - for instance, the samosa at Cafe Central and the suki bhaji at Tato are invariant under all spacetime coordinate transformations). While some aspects of Goan life have been over-hyped, others have been neglected badly. So those who don't know about them... would never do. What happens inevitably is that those who (often serve poor food) have the best budgets for advertising and PR stuff. So many of the restaurants which get written about the most in Goa are those who are the most lavish with their hospitality... and not necessarily those which offer a good deal or a tasty meal. You'll find a couple of my tongue-in-cheek reviews of absolutely plebian places in Goa at indiamike.com here: Ten great value-for-money places to eat out in Goa 150 km for a rice plate... http://www.indiamike.com/india/archive/index.php/t-9573.html I wonder how Hotel Mangalore is doing. As you could gauge, in this sea of chauvinism, I have a sneaking respect for these so-called non Goans. Food there was yummm... as my three-year-old Aren would say! FN PS: The only area for disagreement -- a dotin domain would cost you four times as much as an .info domain (at least in the first year). Patriotism comes at a price! I would take the more practical/inexpensive option. Even dotorgs are cheaper. On 01/03/07, Rajan P.
