[Goanet] Unintended consequences
Rajan says: Manohar-bab did not start this. But he has the chance and the mandate now to permanently kick casinos out of Goa. Comment: If I am not mistaken it was Manohar who was accused of clearing the decks for the off-shore casinos in Goa. I am not sure who started on-shore casinos. I would also like to recall that it was Manohar who was toying with the idea of making beer available on gaddas just before his mighty fall in 2004. I just cannot accept that Manohar does not understood the seriousness of breeding these vices in the state. I believe there is much more to all this. Only time will reveal the truth. -- - Soter --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---

Ah-ha. Thank you for bringing the underw*rld up Senor Parrikar. For those Goichis who sleep well... In Goa would be difficult to distinguish the over-world from the underworld; Goichis take easily to crime and the minor m@tke is religion these days. The shop was set up long long time ago..near the airportwaddya think the Green in the port town thrives on..all interlinked, and the Sakarams are clueless. There are so many different branches present in Goi, it would be easier keeping track of five generations of relatives than. To give you an example, the deadly Tam*l lot have a toe-hold here.one has to read in between the lines. Do listening to Misha Glenny on Do-buy as the new capital of *nderworld (old story). During one of his talks one attended, he mentioned Goi as possible the No2 (the centre of the uw of the old days was NYC and Lund-on). Glenny's talks are most fascinating and if you happen to be in a city where he is talking, don't miss. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esRT1QdlW0w http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misha_Glenny Ah, before I go, this will help you sleep better...love the swimsuits no? http://www.flickr.com/photos/limbic/3640887760/in/photostream/ Glenny has a slide show with his talk on how it all started in the Eastern block (post communism) and the picture becomes clear on rusky presence in North Goa, and why they are here to stay. [Goanet] Unintended consequences
To Goanet - The problem with making Goa a hub for casinos and gaming is that it will attract the worst and most criminal elements to it. (If it hasn't already - why is Mr Mody walking around with gun-toting bodyguards?) Had it been one or two land-based casinos buried in some corner of a 5-star hotel, that would have been one thing. But Goa seems well on its way to becoming a hub, supporting multiple floating as well as land-based operations. We are playing with fire. The Indian underworld has most likely already set up shop. If not, it will soon come in, rest assured. And once this casino monster becomes big and powerful, there will be no stopping it. There will also be space opening up for auxiliary industries (think escort services, high end call girls etc). Recall how the mob took over Las Vegas once (see Casino, starring Robert de Niro, for one adaptation of the story). It took a major FBI operation to put these guys out of business and to clean up Vegas. No such clean-up will every happen in Goa/India. Manohar-bab did not start this. But he has the chance and the mandate now to permanently kick casinos out of Goa. The most charitable spin I can put on his latest sops for casinos is that he wants to quickly generate revenue and put it to work on the other goodies he has promised Goans. My response to that: you cannot think of revenue in isolation. You have to think about the consequences, especially long-term effects of short-term expedients. This is a losing gamble (pun intended). My hope is that Goans will call or write to him with their views. r --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---
