[Goanet] What next after vote is cast

2024-05-06 Thread Nelson Lopes
What after vote is cast

Pre election, voter king filled with pride
It is sacred duty emphatically chide
enamoured with right ,duty vote is cast
Importance and worth of citizen is last.

The right for errant electors to recall
Forfeit ,ban, reelction not order tall
Representatives must have experience qualification to serve
Tax free ,huge monetary gains do not deserve

No legislator beyond 2 terms serve .
Women as per reservation representation deserve
Candidates with criminal records find place
Representatives with such cases is disgrace

Elections must focus on progress done with plans for more
Stinging character assassination alone comes to fore
Election campaigns are at all time low
Position and status not issues provide the glow.

Voter has absolute no say after vote is cast
It is your privilege ,right last
Wait for long 5 years to vent your ire
Boiling with discontent under fire.

Representatives power ,privileges reap
As demagogues, orators seek publicity cheap
Prostrate, genuflect at their feet
An appointment to greet or meet.

Representatives then bask in glory
Forgetting promises as past story.
Voters alone propelled them to power
Some crumbs here and there they shower.

[Goanet] What Child Is This (O Heraldo, 24/12/2023)

2023-12-24 Thread V M
https://www.heraldgoa.in/Edit/By-invitation/What-Child-is-This/215628

Today of all days we cannot turn away. This evening at midnight, countless
millions of people in every part of the world will celebrate the birth of
“whom shepherds guard and angels sing.” That is Palestine, where there will
be no Christmas celebrations in the original Manger Square in front of the
nearly 2000-year-old Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. “People are
grieving and sad about what is happening in Gaza,” the parish priest
told *Deutsche
Welle *earlier this week. “This is the first time that the place where
Jesus was born, I see it empty like this.”

Father Issa Taljieh is a Bethlehem native who has served the famous
pilgrimage site for 12 years, where he’s responsible for the Greek Orthodox
premises (by ancient agreement, the church is shared with the Catholics and
Armenian Apostolic Church). Today, it is under the loose administrative
control of the Palestinian National Authority headed by Mahmoud Abbas, at
the heart of an envelope of territory hemmed in by two bypass roads and 37
separate enclaves for the exclusive use of Israeli settlers. Just like
every other part of the occupied West Bank, these are tense environs
shrouded in an atmosphere of violence, and it has remained that way for a
very long time.

I had the opportunity to experience this fraught “holy land” way back in
1984, when my family was granted special permissions to visit Israel that
came printed on little slips of paper that were meant to be discarded after
we left Ben Gurion Airport on the way home. In those years, like all other
Indians, our passports carried this prominent proscription: “Not Valid for
Travel to Israel, South Africa and Southern Rhodesia”. Since then, it has
become relatively common for many of us to make similar trips, and tens of
thousands of Goans have undertaken pilgrimage tours to all the iconic
Biblical sites: Jerusalem, Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee. But that was not
the case 40 years ago, and we had known no one else from our backgrounds
who had made it out there for the apex event that is Midnight Mass in
Bethlehem, in what is most likely the oldest Christian site of worship in
the world.

Unbeknownst to us, that very same Christmas Eve turned out to be an
important turning point for Palestine and the Palestinians. The territories
of the West Bank had been originally seized from Jordan in 1967, after the
so-called Six-Day War, when Israel decisively defeated an Arab coalition
(and simultaneously occupied the Golan Heights from Syria, and the Gaza
Strip and Sinai Peninsula from Egypt), but were left relatively alone and
handled comparatively gingerly until Midnight Mass in 1984, when my family
and everyone else was entirely shocked when Shimon Peres suddenly showed up
– the first Israeli leader to ever visit the iconic shrine – and popped up
onstage in Manger Square to exhort us: “I bring a greeting of peace to all
those who seek peace.” It’s an indelible memory: Peres delivering promises
that sounded like threats, with an army of snipers standing out against
cloudless dark skies on all the surrounding rooftops. The holy night became
tinged with menace.

What happened since then – the massive expansion of settlements, Intifadas,
constant violence and the steady devolution of Israel into an apartheid
state – has directly led to the war of extermination being waged against
the Palestinians in Gaza, enabled by an increasingly obviously
ethnonationalist coalition of the west led by the USA. To the stark horror
of yet another generation of young people who expected better from the
world, we are seeing exactly how the “rules-based international order”
applies only selectively, with some lives valued more than others.
Arundhati Roy described this terrible moment in time at an award function
in Kerala earlier this month: “Something in our moral selves will be
altered forever. Are we going to simply stand by and watch while homes,
hospitals, refugee camps, schools, universities, archives are bombed, a
million people displaced, and dead children pulled out from under the
rubble? The borders of Gaza are sealed. People have nowhere to go. They
have no shelter, no food, no water. The United Nations says more than half
the population is starving. And still they are being bombed relentlessly.
Are we going to once again watch a whole people being dehumanised to the
point where their annihilation does not matter?”

A couple of days ago on Twitter, the outstanding writer and public
intellectual Priyamvada Gopal (she is a professor at Cambridge University
in the UK) posted that “I’m dreading the evening we think about a baby born
in Bethlehem. Too painful to contemplate.” I agreed at first, but now it
seems to me this Christmas Eve is perfectly timed precisely because we are
firmly enjoined – via scripture, tradition and historical circumstance too
– to think and talk about Palestine. And of course, it’s not only about
Palestine but the future

[Goanet] What does ChatGPT "think" of Goanet?

2023-03-02 Thread Frederick Noronha
ChatGPT on Goanet:

How efficient has Goanet been as a source of sharing news and views related
to Goa?

As an AI language model, I don't have access to real-time data on the
efficiency of Goanet as a source of sharing news and views related to Goa.
However, based on my knowledge of Goanet, I can provide some insights.

Goanet is an email-based network that was established in 1994 to share news
and views related to Goa and Goans. It is a platform for individuals and
organizations to exchange information, opinions, and ideas on various
topics related to Goa, including culture, politics, environment, and
development.

Over the years, Goanet has played an important role in bringing together
people from different backgrounds and providing a space for them to share
their perspectives on various issues. It has also been instrumental in
raising awareness about important issues affecting Goans, such as the
impact of mining on the environment and the preservation of Goa's cultural
heritage.

However, like any other platform, Goanet has its limitations. As an
email-based network, it may not be as accessible or user-friendly as some
of the more modern social media platforms. Additionally, since it is a
closed network, it may not reach a wider audience outside of its subscriber
base.

Overall, while it is difficult to measure the efficiency of Goanet as a
source of sharing news and views related to Goa, it has undoubtedly played
a significant role

Re: [Goanet] What Goa Lost, For No Good Reason (O Heraldo, 12/11/2022)

2022-11-12 Thread Rajan Parrikar
Contrary to what is claimed in the header and in the dribble under it, Goa
won and for a very good reason. The "Festival of Filth" got canned.

The people who lost are the anti-Hindu muckrakers pretending to be
scholars, and their local Leftwing handmaidens who got caught trying to
sneak one in. It was supposed to be a group crap session on Hindus but they
got caught and hence all this whining. RSS! Hindutva fascists! Modi! This,
that, the usual Leftwing piss.

Note the pulling of rank - Harvard! As if anyone today gives a sh!t. The
old Harvard with its distinguished roster of classical scholars is long
dead. It is the Woke Harvard now, populated by Marxist/progressive gits and
BLM grifters.

Imagine the howls of protest from the same crew if the subjects were
reversed - if they had brought in people to speak on the historical
brutality Hindus were subjected to by the Portuguese Christians (all of
which a matter of historical record). They would have gone postal on social
media, Herald would have come out with a supplement. You can unload your
bowels on Hindus without consequences. In fact, it has been a profitable
metier and a path to career advancement. Until now, that is. The new Hindu
has finally decided she has had enough.

Predictably, 'House Negro' and useful idiot Mauzo (the "good bamon") is
quoted. The impression conveyed that Yengde is some kind of intellectual
giant is risible. In truth, the fella is a cretin, his bile reserved
especially for bamons.

Here is an introduction to Mr. Yeng-effing-de:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wxf39NVOv6g

Why this crew would want to inflame social tension under the cover of
"ideas" I don't know and I don't care. True scholarly exchange of ideas
this was never going to be given the abysmal intellectual quality of the
speakers. They scraped the bottom of their Leftwing excrement barrel and
came up with this smelly pile.

What I know is, all middle-of-the-road Goan Hindus are going to oppose this
tooth and nail.

You can have your hatefest with your own coin. Just not with taxpayer money.

PS: Goanet and Herald, with their predominantly Catholic audience already
primed against RSS/Hindutva/BJP is the perfect target for this agitprop.
Sometimes I wonder why I even bother. Any pushback such as mine is not
going to convince anyone who is already convinced that the other side is
evil. I write here because I want to place the counter view on record.

[Goanet] What Next After Goanet?

2022-09-10 Thread Roland Francis
Are there any plans to sustain the idea of Goanet after it collapses, a
possibility that looks likely.

Goanet served an excellent purpose - to use FN’s phrase: Creating Social
Capital - but now as Gabe Menezes says “It is going kaput”.

I have greatly benefited from Goanet. I made contacts with people from the Goan
Diaspora and for those beyond Canada, without meeting them a single time, they
have become good friends.

Like a train journey seeing people alighting, some of those friends have left.
A few this life, others just the bulletin board. I miss them all.

In the 25 odd years I have kept a presence here, I have been actively posting.
It started out with FN encouraging me to post on Goanet Reader which led me to
discover that writing helped me in many ways. It organized my thoughts, it
revived my memories and it aided me in walking back to my lanes and roads
through which I might have never walked again. Surprisingly writing did some
other thing for me: it allowed me to use words and phrases dwelling in the
recesses of my mind that I hesitated to access. It helped me in my work where I
was able to counter hesitation and objection with a thought or turn of the
phrase that suddenly became facile but to the deal, effective. It taught me
that even with full disclosure, there are certain things that must not be said.
It taught me to ponder before I write else I would place Sabre Toothed Tigers
in Siberia. The mind like everything else, is a muscle or a machine that
performs best when oiled and used often.

Will I mourn Goanet when she is gone? Despite younger more vigorous and active
channels that are now accessible, of course I will. How do you not cherish an
old song or an old friendship?

But I mourn too soon. Maybe Goanet like the late Queen will rule for many more
years even after her ‘mobility issues’ creep up.

[Goanet] What Filipinas Fear

2022-06-16 Thread Roland Francis
A humorous video without the creator intending it to be.

Watch it in the context of old and sometimes a little rich American men running
off to the Philippines to live their retired lives with the monthly Social
Security they receive from the US Govt.

Why you will ask. For the same reason you will see white haired men driving off
in a convertible Porsche, Lamborghini or Mercedes Benz, imagining they are
attractive to younger women - a mid life crisis.

Another reason is Filipinas are caring, devoted, gentle and polite (they make
great nurses and healthcare workers) while western women are brash,
argumentative and don’t believe the man is the centre of their lives. So after
death of the partner, separation, divorce or desertion, the American man rather
than seeking another American woman of his age, sees an opportunity not only to
get a younger model but also a caring, devoted one.

So they take off to South East Asia to find themselves one or more women 30 or
40 years younger than they are, more often than not preferring Filipinas to
Thais, Cambodians or Vietnamese because of the English language proficiency.
Word on their vine is that they are better off going to the provinces rather
than Manila or other cities, just as an older, Goan lecherous man would prefer
a little educated but attractive woman from Canacona instead of a Margao or
Panjim sophisticate.

With Goa as a destination becoming less and less ideal for the single, older
Diaspora Goan man you will see hanging out with his pals on beaches or the more
upper class pubs in Goa, it is only a matter of time before they discover the
charms of the Philippines for themselves - a surfeit of young, pretty available
women not just for temporary pleasure but to keep, cheap living, beautiful
beaches, a Catholic and Spanish-American hospitable society, streets much
cleaner than Goa and traditions and feasts just like Goa.

All in all you will enjoy this video from the Filipina Pea. She is articulate,
forward and tackles the subject well.

[Goanet] What constitutes idea of Goa

2022-03-26 Thread Nelson Lopes
What constitutes Goan identity
A flash back of 450 years of repressive rule of Portuguese did not bend the
will of the people for unity. That is the identity that is the idea of
Goa.Fear and brutality, inquisition, did not deter people against common
goal for freedom.Religion did neither divide or unite Goans. They stood as
one block. It was neither preservation of culture, traditions or customs
which were not the forces of unity.Languages were not the focus of Goan
identity.Communal harmony was the hall mark.Kon as a language was degraded
as lingua of cooks and butlers and attending Teatro was considered as
demeaning the status of attendees.Land again was not considered precious
to confine boundaries. It is now sold by land sharks for self
enrichment. The communal harmony ,social cultural life that , western
influence had that is an attraction to outsiders..Goans never bothered to
selectively preserve cultural identity as to merger with motherland and
for economic aspects.None wanted to enforce any specific identity
associated with majority and minority nor religious denominations
The common civil code which is praised by India is another valuable factor
that constitutes idea of Goa.The opinion poll was the first wedge to bring
into focus religious differences, but unitedly and side by side Goans
worked to preserve its unique identity English was prevalent but
Portuguese flourished as language of elite and for jobs and higher

What is the idea of Goa can be best visualized by Goans settled abroad

North and South divided on religion
TOP functionaries of BJP do not show their presence in the South by any

Inter religious marriages and discussions try to mend the gulf of

Kon could be a uniting force but those who profess their support of Kon
educate their children in English mediums and even knowledge of Kon
relaxed for employment purposes.Unity alone, economic progress facilities
for education, employment opportunities, remained idea of Goa
Special status to put restrictions on limited source of land is a
regressive demand today. In many countries the native population is in
minority, but that has not dismissed the idea of national
identity.Migration emigration is purely fir economic reasons and not
create identity between identity
Goa of the day is home and residential settlement for all Indians and
hence will be home to many cultures and traditions. One cannot expect that
Govt give thrust to promote preserve any specific culture ot
tradtions.Accept, be tolerant to each other and superiority of any cultural
practice cannot be focussed to represent Goan idea
Promotion of way of life without conflicts or competitions ,will unify
all to live in peace and harmony..It is proud privilege that Goa had no
religious riots and politicians have not been able to engineer one.Avoid
hatred indifference or emphasize superiority of any particular
culture.Carnival as traditions is a big draw and Goa is entertaining
capital of India.Tourism promotes Goa, so also cuisine, hospitality that
makes a Goan idea
Idea of Goa is live and let live, accepting and respecting all cultures and
traditions
Customs like dashra Sigmo and those of Rajasthan ,Kerela Guerat Bihar
etc are enhancing idea of new Goa .Festivals, celebrations do not make
idea of Goa
When we assimilate other cultures, as Goa has over the centuries western

WHAT THE STARS FORETELL FOR PANAJI

BY Stephen Dias
   Social Activist
  Dona Paula
  9422443110
  13 th December 2021

The election to Goa Assembly will be done by February 2022. There are
various aspirants for the post of Panjim MLA in the various political
parties of Goa. Panjim being the capital city is important to all the
political parties. Winning Panjim is a matter of prestige in Goa and any
party which wins Goa would aim and expect to go to win the parliamentary
elections of 2024.

Issues before Panjim are many;
1. We don't have a proper garbage management plant in place.
2. The sewage released from Casinos is dumped in the Sewage Treatment plant
(STP) at Tonca despite exceeding its capacity resulting in pollution of the
St. Inez Creek and the river Mandovi.
3. The garbage of Panjim is not scientifically treated and the garbage
plant planned at Bainguinim is so far a non-starter.

Now, we have a long time patron in charge of Panjim vying for the Panjim
seat on a BJP ticket but the court case of the stoning of the Panjim Police
station is like a sword over his head. The hard-core BJP party workers want
Utpal Parrikar to be the Panjim candidate. Time only will tell what will
happen.

Interestingly the Congress is fighting hard to win Panjim which they lost
when Babush won on the Congress ticket and defected to BJP. At the moment
Congress have many aspirants for Panjim -- Some of which I can count are
Babush Monserrate, Utpall Parrikar, Uday Madkaikar, Surendra Furtado,
Menino de Cruz among others.

Among the other parties the Aam Aadmi Party has got the very well educated
and clean politician Valmiki Naik. It is not known yet if the TMC and MGP
union which is just formed is going to fill a common candidate for Panjim.

What is very important for the residents of Panjim to consider is who among
these candidates will be best suited to meet the most critical challenges:

1. Will the Casinos from River Mandovi be removed.
2. Will the candidate be able to give a Garbage Treatment plant for Panjim.
3. Whether the St Inez creek and Mandovi will be desilted and sewage
pollution in the river would be stopped.
4. Whether the construction of the monstrous and environmentally dangerous
terminal building on the jetty near the existing Captain of Ports will be
stopped.
5. Will he or she address the parking woes of the city as Casino vehicles,
scooters, tourists, tempos, tankers, tour buses are choking all the
arteries of Panjim streets and making loud noises not allowing the nearby
residents to sleep and to move due to traffic congestion on pavements and
roads. There is heavy dust pollution and buses moving without Pollution
certificates thus they too emitting black smoke throughout their journey
with impunity in front of traffic policemen who fail to issue Challans. All
the above are causing respiratory ailments which can have far reaching
consequences, specially with Covid infections starting to spike again, and
must not be neglected by those seeking votes from Panjimites.
5. MIRAMAR beach has turned into an eye sore where you can see number of
illegal construction including a huge Samadi construction is in progress.
To shut People's mouth a recreation facility and garden has been made.
Those who frequent from Miramar to Dona Paula know the whole stretch of
road is smelling of sewage and bad smell at certain pockets specially near
the new Vivanta hotel and also near the Goa Science Centre area.

We have already seen the BJP has no interest in removing the Casinos. In
fact since they have been in power for more than 10 years we have to
acknowledge they are incapable of doing any of the things on this list. All
they can do is promise a Smart City. Notice I said 'promise'. That's all
our Goan politicians can typically do. Make promises they can't deliver.

Only our government could have the nerve to talk about Panjim as a Smart
City while you have multiple illegalities going on and even basics like the
number of huge trees fallen down are unattended. Our roads are in a
dilapidated condition with a number of pot holes all over Panjim. Even
their pride and joy - the Atal Sethu - can't be used half the time.

I think the best symbol of the plight we are in is one of the streetlights
put up with great fanfare costing lakhs each, which stands broken and
destroyed for some years now... Abandoned to be consumed by the elements.
Not even worthy of being removed apparently.

The government only knows how to spend our money on the facade. The house
may be falling down but they will pay a huge amount to cover it in poor
quality paint and pretend all is well.

Let's wait and watch if any candidate will care enough to solve the
structural issues that face Panjim instead of only putting on a show before
the elections.

Re: [Goanet] What Is the Price of the Modi Years?: In Conversation with Aakar Patel

2021-12-03 Thread Roland Francis
An excellent 33 minute interview by two intelligent people who break down their
discussion to understandable issues, making it easily digestible.

Aakar Patel the author has detached himself from any bias in his views as well
he should and Mitali Mukherjee does likewise. It’s people like these two to
whom Modi should listen and not to his own overblown authoritarian ego.

Here is how Patel, also a Gujarati like Narendra Modi, is best described:

“Aakar Patel has courted trouble for a long time. The temporary suspension of
his Twitter account was only the latest. Through all his identities as
reporter, editor, podcaster, Gujarati, Amnesty International’s India chief,
Patel has always been a mischief maker. While his latest tweets, saying that
Muslims, Dalits, and Adivasis should stage their own form of Black Lives Matter
protest in India, have left many angry and entertained, the Indian State is not
amused.

What’s going on with Aakar Patel appears to be a frequent question among
India’s commentariat. Has he just been reduced to a Modi-Shah baiter today?

On closer inspection, Aakar Patel is like any other writer, thinker,
journalist, or activist who refuses to turn a blind eye to the State’s
excesses, and does not mince his words. Some of his critique, be it of the
Narendra Modi government at the Centre or of other governments in states, has
been through his writing, or through reports he oversaw while helming human
rights watchdog Amnesty International.”

In those days, when Konkani and Marathi were competing for space in Goa,
the late Dr Wilfred "Willy" de Souza FRCS (Lon) and FRCS (Edin), Chief

Recently, I did a search, mainly through dictionaries in my collection and

2021-09-16 Thread eric pinto

Africans crossed the Sinai around sixty thousand years ago. They evolved into
three broad physical types,  Turkcic, Coptic and Keltic in the plains and hills
aroundthe Black Sea. The Copts were further refined into today's Europeans in
the Kavkas mountains ofArmenia, Georgia and the lesser republics now swallowed
by Russia. Feel free to say Caucasians.   Turkey, then known as Asea/Asia, sent
waves of Kaltic and the related Atrusi (Etruscans) into Europeand the Balkans.
There is a Atrusi Museum in Croatia.   Kaltik mummies in Uzbekistan feature pig
tails and tartan skirts. Kaltik types live in Nepal and Tibet.   It was the
expansion of Germanic types that pushed the Celts into Scotland and Wales.
French Normandy is home to their remnants on Europe's mainland.    The
relentless Turkcic move east gave us the peopling of Oriental Asia, Siberia and
the the American continents. A few herd reindeer in Sweden and Norway.     Your
DNA test will label you Asian. That implies the early Coptic land of
Turkey/Asea.      Because 'Oriental' is derogatory today, the people of the
East have borrowed the moniker 'Asian'

He also brings up an interesting concept that China pushes - governing

Coming closer to home in Goa, imagine the Chinese concept of selection and then

[Goanet] WHAT KIND OF NEW INDIA?

2021-05-01 Thread John Eric Gomes
JUSTICE LINGERS
The laws and rules do not seem to apply to our elected representatives who are
expected to lead by example. We are now in a massive Covid Tsunami crisis.
Lockdowns again, people behaved like sheep and are now dying like flies. Health
system on verge of collapse! Whose fault is this? Government will not stop
grandoise plans (buildngs, mandirs, statues) and first urgently subsidise the
vaccine manufacturers. There are lots of crorepatti MPs/MLAs, plenty of money
for roadshows and EC has seized crores of illegal cash! More chaos in purchase
and distribution of vaccines/medical goods and mess being created where common
man is out of reckoning as ususal! Today the High courts are leading the way .
Madras HC to EC " You have been singularly lacking any kind of exercise of
authority.should be put up on murder charges". A Delhi city court termed
police action on Deep Sidhu vicious! When there were attempts to defeat a bail
order ".The arrest and incarseration since october last year of journalist
Siddique Kapan on way to investigate Hatras case shocked the Editors Guild. The
Guild says " It is further shocking that the SC has not so far intervened to
ensure a fair trial". The habeas corpus challenging his arrest has been before
the SC for the last six months! Police arrested journalistTejpal in 2013 for
investigative stories against the government, he had to close down his
newspaper since they arrested him for an alleged misbhavior with a female
staff, and slapped many separate charges against him from wrongful restraint,
wrongful confinement, criminal assault with attempt to disrobe, rape, person of
trust, authority etc, brought up umpteen times before courts and seven years
later judgement keeps being postponed! The Mapusa court final judgement due on
27th April 2021 has reportedly again adjourned the date to May 12th , without
giving any reason! The latest shocking televised incident is a DM arrogantly
tearing a permission obtained letter produced and throwing it in the face
whilst manhandling and arresting those at a marriage party, pushing the married
couple, priest, decent citizens and rudely bossing all around! Three MLAs
have reportedly brought this to the notice of Chief Secretary, Government of
Tripura and I wonder what political action will follow. Nobody acts on shocking
blatant lawlessness without a complaint either! And now the Ex CEC who the HC
remarked considered murderer for holding extended elections ones in Bengal, not
implementing Covid protocal and apparently doing the governments biding is
omniously appointed as Governor of Goa! Is this dangerously prejudiced
arrogantly ruled democratic India our cup of tea?

[Goanet] WHAT WILL BE CM PRAMOD SAWANT’S MESSAGE FOR RIBANDAR THIS TIME AROUND?

2021-02-27 Thread Aires Rodrigues
The last time Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited Ribandar was in April
2019 during that campaign for Panaji Assembly by-election and he publicly
cautioned the people of Ribandar by saying “Babush Monserrate is facing
Rape charges and if a Rapist becomes your MLA, the ladies and girls of
Ribandar will be so very unsafe”.

We are all eagerly waiting to see what Pramod Sawant will advise the people
of Ribandar when he now visits us during the CCP election campaign. All
that Pramod Sawant can possibly say is that he is sorry for a disgraceful
U-Turn and come clean with the words “It is not me but Babush Monserrate
who aborted that Ribandar Health Centre we had promised you”.

The people of Ribandar and Panjim have a right to understand why an
important, worthwhile and much needed Ribandar Health Centre agreed by all
in principle has been shelved.

For Babush Monserrate and his 30 candidates the writing is on the wall.
Very loud and extremely clear. The people have had enough of the
disgusting cheap and unethical Politriks enveloped with all false and fake
promises.

[Goanet] What Does the Title 'Esquire' Mean, Anyway?

2021-02-10 Thread Roland Francis
An in-depth and well-written article as one typically finds in Atlas Obscura,
this one about about the title Esquire.

In the few decades following British rule in India it was common to use the
title Esquire after a gentleman’s name as in Thomas Fernandes Esq. in letter
and envelope addresses. In Portuguese India such form of address for genteel
folk (read higher Goan classes) was Exmo. Sr., an abbreviation for
Excelentissimo Senhor, meaning Dear Sir, Respecful Mr., or Excellency. Both
forms of addresses have since vanished.

[Goanet] What Religious Belief Sometimes Does.

2021-02-04 Thread Roland Francis

In a horrifying incident, a mother bludgeoned her two daughters in their 20s,
allegedly at the advice of a tantric priest, while their father watched the
grisly act in silence.

A mother killed her two daughters using dumbells on the night of Sunday, Jan.
24th in Andhra Pradesh, India. When police arrived on the scene, they inquired
about the incident. The girls' parents explained that their daughters would
come alive again after the sunrise, as "kalyuga" ends and "satyuga" begins.
Police reached the scene of the incident after a tip-off.

The police identified the victims as 27-year-old Alekhya and 22-year-old Sai
Divya. As police forced themselves into the home, the parents resisted them,
refusing to allow the bodies to be removed, saying that the “girls will come
back by morning.” The hysterical mother later told police, “the Atmas (souls)
left, and they were supposed to come back. But they did not. I have lost my
daughters.”

Police officials reported that the mother was “delusional." But when they
finally forced their way inside, they discovered a shocking crime scene. The
bodies of both girls were covered in long red silk sarees. The police recovered
a trident and the dumbbells used to kill the girls as they placed the couple in
custody.

Defense attorney Ben Brafman clarified the sentence he handed down after

Berman said, later reading out a report from a psychologist who saw
D’Souza and then
ordering him to continue attending weekly sessions. The psychiatrist

So long as D’Souza stays on track with his community service, he will be

D’Souza pleaded guilty last year, which means D’Souza will have to do
over 1,600 hours more

service than he initially thought.
We’re talking about five years of eight hours a week? … This is a very
serious impediment to obtaining full-time employment because you miss
one day of work a
week,” Brafman said in the conference inside Berman’s robing room, as
D’Souza listened in silently via speakerphone. “In my mind it was never
contemplated
that the eight hours only applied to the period of home confinement,”
Berman said, later reading out a report from a psychologist who saw
D’Souza and then
ordering him to continue attending weekly sessions. The psychiatrist
wrote. “The client tends to deny problems and is arrogant and intolerant
of others’ feelings.”

So long as D’Souza stays on track with his community service, he will be
allowed to visit his daughter in London and his elderly mom in India
later this year (2014), Berman said.
PAMELA GELLER (President of the American Freedom Defense Initiative )
wrote on 15 Jul 2015
"What is being done to Dinesh D’Souza is an outrage, and all Americans

I am no D’Souza fan. Dinesh is being hounded and punished for something
that Democrats do every day – that’s the point.
The idea that Dinesh D’Souza would have to undergo psychological
examination for breaking the rules is a new Stalinist mode of American
politics."

Breitbart News reported in September 2014: “In addition to his five-year
probation sentencing and eight months of confinement in a community
confinement center,

Judge Berman ordered D’Souza to undergo ‘therapeutic counselling.’”

There has been no other unpredictable US President than Trump, in recent memory.
Many Indians in the US are supporting Trump, only because of his anti-Muslim
stance. And Trump coddles up to the rich Saudis, as they have helped his
business interests!
He has not said a word about the Khashoggi murder.

If we believe that he is forever going to support India, they are mistaken. All
he wants is business opportunities in India for him and his family.
He is ready to bury anyone that does not help/support him, as can be seen from
his vindictive actions against the likes of Jeff Sessions.
Jeff Sessions, the first Republican Senator to support him in 2016, refused to
defend him as the Attorney General of the US and he unceremoniously booted him
out.
And legally, no Attorney General can defend the President, like a private
lawyer.

I have received WhatsApp messages and writeups, with concerns on how a
Biden-Harris administration could be detrimental to India, just because they
questioned some of the
happenings in India and more particularly related to Kashmir. It is as if the
US is only focused on India!
In general, no US Administration has ever been anti-India, with perhaps Nixon
being an exception. Indira Gandhi at times foolishly crossed swords with the
US, in the
name of Non-Alignment and support of Muslim nations and her anti-Israel stance.
And look at where India is now, with excellent relations with not just Israel,
but even other
Muslim nations of the Middle East.

Shashi Tharoor's assertions/hopes about Biden-Harris raising the Kashmir and
CAA issues, might simply be a dream.

[Goanet] What will President Joe Biden mean for South Asia? (Dhaka Tribune, 29/10/2020)

2020-10-29 Thread V M
https://www.dhakatribune.com/opinion/op-ed/2020/10/29/op-ed-what-will-president-joe-biden-mean-for-south-asia

Polls have been wrong before, but it’s looking increasingly certain
that Donald Trump and his Republicans will decisively lose next week’s
election. Early next year, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will take over
as president and vice-president, and the US leadership will swing back
into the Democratic ambit.

There’s plenty at stake for South Asian countries, but less than might
seem obvious from the vastly different personal styles of the brash,
bloviating incumbent and his understated, empathetic (and visibly
elderly) challenger.

As the wily imperialist warmonger Lord Palmerston put it, “it is a
narrow policy to suppose that this country or that is to be marked out
as the eternal ally or the perpetual enemy. We have no eternal allies,
and we have no perpetual enemies. Our interests are eternal and
perpetual, and those interests it is our duty to follow.”

When it comes to the United States and South Asia, there are two sets
of permanent interests at play in the superpower’s calculus:
geopolitical power, and internal electoral politics. The former
dominated overwhelmingly until the 21st century, but then South Asian
American voters emerged an increasingly potent force, possessing the
capacity to swing some states, as well as contribute funds far out of
proportion to their numbers.

Here it’s vital to note that Indian Americans (and there is good
reason to believe these trends are equally pronounced amongst other
South Asian diaspora groups) always overwhelmingly support the
Democrats, and close to 80% are expected to vote for Biden/Harris this
year as well.

What is more, this loyal bloc doesn’t really care about the American
government’s positions towards their ancestral homeland. According to
a fascinating survey released earlier this month by the Carnegie
Endowment for International Peace, Johns Hopkins School of Advanced
International Studies and the University of Pennsylvania, only 3% of
Indian American voters listed foreign policy as their number 1 issue.
Everyone else cited the economy, health care, and racial
discrimination.

This is largely to be expected from what is in many ways the richest,
best-educated, and most highly integrated immigrant demographic in US
history.

These are not disaffected people. They think America is already pretty
great. Naturally, they’re alarmed by Trump’s rage, racism, and
extremist supporters. The fact that Joe Biden picked a running mate
with Tamilian roots is a bonus, albeit one that is likely to make a
policy difference.

“In the event of a Biden victory, it's clear India won't be
overlooked, let alone forgotten, in an administration of which Kamala
Harris is a senior member” says Shashi Tharoor, the veteran
international diplomat (he ran for the post of UN Secretary-General in
2006), prolific author, and popular MP who served as India’s Minister
of State for External Affairs under Manmohan Singh.

He told me Harris “is bound to be a strong voice for democracy and
human rights generally, but that could put her at odds with some of
the Modi government's actions, such as on Kashmir, the CAA and the
situation of India's Muslim minority. When you care about a country
you won't be indifferent to it, and are more likely to take a stand on
issues agitating the community.”

Tharoor says, “Mr Trump has not always been ideal for India -- his
stands on trade and tariffs, and on India's environmental policies,
could hardly have been welcome in New Delhi -- but he has been
uncritical of Mr Modi's domestic politics and his divisive Hindutva
agenda.”

He pointed out, “there are always continuities in any country's
foreign policy, all the more so that of a superpower like the US, with
well-defined interests and well-established engagements around the
world. That said, where Trump departed from his predecessors was not
only in his rhetoric, which was often ill-phrased and intemperate; but
also in his resort to 3am tweets on major policy issues, such as to
the "Little Rocket Man" in North Korea; his unpredictability and
tendency to change attitudes at a moment's notice, as with China and
President Xi, which has gone from bromance to Cold War; his extreme
transactionalism, resulting even in a mini-trade war with a country he
was trying to woo, India; and his inability to stay the course (eg
bombing Syria one day in April 2017, and failing to follow through for
the next three and a half years).

The bottom line? Tharoor says, “I believe the US's South Asia policy
has evolved definitively the way it has and there is bipartisan
consensus in both capitals that underpin it, not to mention the
influence of the significant Indian diaspora in the US, which will
ensure India's continued salience in Washington. While I do expect
course correction on global issues like multilateralism (I expect
Biden to reverse Trump's decision to pull the US out of WHO, for
instance) I do not expect

Is the Pope another Donald Trump?

Whenever I visit a website recently someone or the other
is writing on the subject of the Pope’s attitude towards gays.

The reaction has spanned from disbelief to turning some people rabid
after a monsoon shower.

How can you compare the Pope with Donald Trump? they ask.

Actually, it is not so farfetched as both are Heads of States: USA and Vatican.
People tend to forget the Church is also a State and the Pope is the
Head of the Church.

Why all the barking then?

The laity appears to be struck by lightning while priests are busy undertaking
damage management which is suspicious as the clergy is well known for their
liking for boys.

Over the decades priests and boys have made headlines all over the world.
All this we all know too well.

What surprises me is the silent turn off of memory as same sex relations
is strongly opposed in the Holy Bible. Yet there is no mention of the
Holy Bible.

Surely every Christian is aware of this?

Unlike Hindu scriptures which takes a neutral attitude the Holy Bible is
full of condemnation about same sex relations.

Can Roman Catholics pick and choose a la carte from the Holy Bible?
And, the Pope, too?

[Goanet] WHAT A DAY IT WAS

2020-09-08 Thread Aires Rodrigues
It was so nice meeting up yesterday with Sister Conrad at the Missionaries
of Charity center in Quepem. Infact, I met Sister Conrad after four long
decades. Despite being in her late 80’s, Sister Conrad recognized me at
first sight.

During the 70s whenever the now Saint Teresa of Calcutta came to Goa along
with Sister Conrad she always made it a point to visit our house in
Ribandar as my father had then accompanied her nuns during their weekly
medical camps at Chimbel and Carambolim. Mother Teresa was the recipient of
the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. Nostalgic memories of my last meeting with
Mother Teresa at her headquarters in Calcutta in 1981, remain always the
most treasured moments of my life, where I witnessed humanity touched by
simplicity and humility.

Now, as Saint Teresa of Calcutta, she was always an immense solace to the
poor and downtrodden. Her Missionaries of Charity across the country and
the world are a shelter for the destitute and homeless.

In her death on 5th September 1997 the poor and impoverished lost their
relentless savior, but the rich legacy and shining example she left behind
has been taken forward by the Missionaries of Charity who are doing a
laudable service in Goa too.

After visiting the reverend nuns at Quepem, it was so nice driving forward
to Don Bosco’s at Sulcorna and interacting with the so very warm hearted
Rector Fr Bernadino and his exceedingly cordial team. As a former student
of Don Bosco, I am very proud of my Alma Mater. In gratitude to them I
shall always remain.

Notwithstanding the current COVID-19 scare, yesterday was a very eventful
day which ended up with a late lunch at Martins Corner at Betalbatim which
has for long been my favorite joint in South Goa. A home away from home.

A Day to remember for all the right reasons. First, the solace and
satisfaction of meeting esteemed friends steeped in humility and simplicity
to help humanity. Then spiritual nourishment was followed by physical
nourishment of the best kind. The best day for both body and soul.

As Mother Teresa famously said ‘Some people come in our life as blessings.
Some come in your life as lessons’. All those I visited yesterday were real
blessings in my life.
