Fuel cost is only the tip of the iceberg. Indian aviation is not at all energy efficient because of airspace restrictions due to military controls and and airport restrictions such as at Dabolim. Fifty percent of Indian airspace is restricted causing airlines to fly circuitous routes and there are over 25 civil enclaves which have slot restrictions causing congestion and hovering of planes. The biggest of these (Hyderabad and Bangalore and Kochi even earlier) have been shut inviting a high cost airport structure in the country. Dabolim, Pune, Vizag and Agra are next in line aggravating the whole matter. The need of the hour is for the government at all levels to seriously attack the cost structure of aviation (due to defence, taxes, AAI inefficiencies etc) to make low-cost no-frills aviation widespread in India including Goa without compromising security and state finances.

Alemao of course (well, off and on) wants Mopa to be a nonstarter. So what is Amarnath all about? Here is a primer of sorts in ET: Cultural nationalism at work 14 Aug, 2008, hrs IST,TK Arun, ET Bureau Kashmir is raging against India. Jammu is raging against Kashmir. Two sets of political formations are happy with all this rage. One set comprises the separatists in Kashmir and Islamic fundamentalists who want all Muslims to see themselves primarily as members of a religion under siege around the world and only thereafter as normal human beings with worldly goals, affinities and affiliations. The other political formation smacking its lips at the communal wash spewing out from Jammu and Kashmir's turbulence is the Sangh Parivar...What is the agitation in Jammu all about? The issue at stake is not a few acres of land. Rather, at stake is a syncretic tradition of Kashmir, of Muslims facilitating a Hindu pilgrimage. Pilgrimage, let us be clear, is as much tourism as it is piety. Tourism is a modern-day phenomenon, when material prosperity makes travel for pleasure seem an entirely legitimate undertaking. In pre-industrial times when bare subsistence was the norm for the bulk of the population, it was immoral, if not impractical, for people to abandon their normal occupation of eking out a living just to travel. But travel is in the human gene. Otherwise, Homo Sapiens sapiens would not have moved out her home in Africa to spread out over the expanse of the planet. So, travel people did, even those who could barely make both ends meet, and justified it as pilgrimage, that is, travel in pursuit of piety. Tourism generates jobs and incomes, whether the said tourism is dressed up in sacred garb or unrobes to show off its hedonist core. It is no different with the Amarnath yatra... The sangh parivar ... seeks to rid Hinduism of traditional non-hostility to other faiths and convert all non-Hindus into second class citizens, living in India on Hindu forbearance. In Amarnath, Hindus and Muslims are mutually engaged, even in a Hindu pilgrimage. This is abhorrent to the sangh parivar, as well as to Islamic fundamentalists. Both kinds of exclusivists are inimical to the idea of India as envisaged in our liberal democratic Constitution, a plural state where people of different faiths can live together in harmony and dignity. The violence in Jammu and Kashmir is a good sampling of what the BJP's exclusionary goal holds in store for the country. It poses the biggest threat to India's internal security and economic prosperity. Irreconcilable differences, tourism, livelihoods, economic betterment etc etc. Anyone want to attempt a similar linkage between the opponents and proponents of Mopa in Goa?

When Times Of India (TOI) was starting operations in Goa,our local Press scared the readers with negative publicity like TOI would pursue the agenda of builders, news for sale etc.Now we find TOI giving more balanced and better copy on local issues. The local dailies are trying to copy format with page three news, instead of bettering the information on local issues. Investigative journalism is too much trouble. Not to mention todays public interest slant.Speaking to various letter writers, we have a common grouse of editing/censoring our main points.This valuable source of feedback appears to be treated with scant respect both by the Establishment and the local dailies. Just take one recent example: Reference Great Goan Illusion ( NT 12Aug), the whole expostulation could be summarised as All Five Fingers Are Not The Same. However the article by no lesser person than the Editor,was trying to show the CM as mum who cannot satisfy the childrens different menu requirements, who tell her how to cut the Bhaji etc. Rebuff to goans and those protesting present state of affairs in Goa! I sent a brief letter with reference ,stating that uncles(MLAs and Vested Interests) are busy trying to dispossess her and also trying disowning the children from their assets. Children are already deprived of enough potable water, cooking infrastructure, cannot study/ access the internet and TV due power failures etc.The children also sorely miss their Papa! Not one of my letters,however brief disagreeing/ holding a different view from the Editorials/ newspaper expostulations have so far been published.If this one was, I would have fired crackers with joy that our Press has some sense of humour, can take criticism, and are not biased! Thank God for the Internet and Goanet.

[Goanet] TBA condemns sabotage of Gram Sabha
*TBA condemns sabotage of Gram Sabha of Taleigao Village* The Taleigao Bachao Abhiyan on behalf of the citizens of Taleigao expresses its shock and moral outrage at the manner in which the Sarpanch of the Village Panchayat of Taleigao made a mockery of the Gram Sabha of Taleigao and did not allow genuine concerns of the villagers to be raised. The TBA points out that the gram sabha held on the 17th of August was in fact required by law to be conducted in the month of July. The TBA brought this lapse to the attention of the BDO, subsequent to which the Panchayat was directed to comply with the law by the BDO. This conforms to a pattern where for at least the past three trimesters the gram sabha has not been held as per schedule, but only after the direction by the BDO. In light of experiences of citizens at the earlier Gram Sabha, that was marked by verbal assault and intimidation, the TBA requested that the Panchayat make provisions for police presence to enable peaceful conduct of the Gram Sabha. However, the Sarpanch, indicated in his opening remarks at the Gram Sabha, that he did not feel the need for the same. He was almost immediately proved wrong, by the presence of the same group of unruly elements that have continuously heckled and disrupted the proceedings in earlier Gram Sabhas. Owing to the absence of police, the Sarpanch was unable to control these elements and used these disruptions as an excuse to dissolve the meeting. The TBA also points out that items submitted for discussion at the gram sabha four working days prior to the same in conformity with the rules of the Goa Panchayat Raj Act were not specifically included in the agenda for the meeting as required by law. Instead, they were raised as per the arbitrary discretion of the Sarpanch. The items submitted included the discussion on action taken on the Gram Sabha's resolution to denotify the IT Park, issues regarding the ODP, formation of ward committees in the village as per directives from the Directorate of Panchayats, information regarding road projects to be undertaken by the Panchayat. The Sarpanch's discretionary conduct ensured that he did not allow valid points to be raised and dismissed these without hearing. Discussion, for instance, on action taken regarding the Gram Sabha's demand for denotification on the IT Park was summarily dismissed by him stating without substantiation that the issue was sub-judice. The Gram Sabha was eventually disrupted when a resolution seeking the repeal of the amendments Section 16 and 16 A to the TCP Act were sought to be passed. Given that there was no unanimity on the issue, it was demanded that it be put to vote. At this point, the Sarpanch began what can only be described as a complete mockery of regular voting procedures. Engaging in a partisan counting exercise, the Sarpanch counted only those in favour of the resolution opposing the amendments. Their numbers were also misrepresented. He then proceeded to indicate that all those within the hall who had not voted for, and those outside of the hall, were 'logically' against the resolution. When points of order were sought to be raised, the unruly elements stepped up their commotion, giving opportunity to the Sarpanch to dissolve the meeting. Rather than reconvene the meeting subsequent to calming down the situation with police assistance, as should have been done, the Sarpanch remained adamant about dissolving the meeting. He, along with the rest of the Panchas, left the premises after locking up the Panchayat office within ten minutes of this occurrence. This left members of the Gram Sabha in a vulnerable position where their lives and property were threatened by the same unruly elements. In face of all the evidence, the TBA asserts that this action of the Sarpanch and the unruly elements were part of a pre-meditated strategy to sabotage the Gram Sabha and suppress the genuine concerns regarding developments in the village. This suppression of genuine concerns, the TBA points out, will only leave scope for vested interests to hold the interests of the people of Taleigao to ransom. The TBA condemns these pre-meditated attempts by the Panchayat to sabotage the democratic processes of the Gram Sabha. CHENNAI IS THE VENUE FOR PRAVASI BHARATIYA DIVAS 2009 Parvasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) is the annual flagship event of the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) which aims to connect more 25 Million Indians with India's Economic and Social development. The Ministry is organizing Seventh edition of the PBD on 7-9 January, 2009 in Chennai, the South Indian city in Tamilnadu. The role of overseas Indians in the country's emergence as a global power will be the main theme. The event will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Pratibha Patil will address the concluding session of the three-day meet. During the annual meet, the Diaspora's role in India's emergence as a global power will be the focus of deliberations. The congregation of Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) will also dwell upon aspects like preservation of language and culture and health concerns of Indian Diaspora. Regional working sessions of the Diaspora residing in the Gulf, Asia-Pacific, Africa, USA, Europe, Caribbean and Canada will be organized. A special trade and industry exhibition during the event with corporate, state governments, NGOs and financial institutions as participants will also be held as part of the convention, an official statement said. Early this year, more than 1,500 participants from 50 countries had attended the PBD 2008 meet.

Those who have gone through these two pieces must be rather confused to understand what the writer wanted to say. Yes, he has made his point, but by taking a very long route. I want to simplify those two pieces in a few lines. 1. Religious or no religious, when people pay the voters Rs. 500 notes to vote for them in the panchayat elections, then the end results are transparent. At least one of the panch member Nazar is talking about has done what is mentioned above. Going to Church and getting involved in Church related activities is just a front for bigger things to come. Public acceptance. 2. Jesus had his last supper like any ordinary man would have when he knew his end was coming nigh. He washed the feet of his friends and shared the bread and wine with them with a difference. What he told them was Here is the cup of wine I am raising in a toast for this last meal. To your health and resilience. You see, this bread is like my flesh which will be torn apart come tomorrow and this cup of wine is like my blood that will be spilled in the bargain. But do not be afread to shed your flesh or spill your blood for TRUTH. You have an example in me. What Nazar wants to say is that today's panch members of the panchayats will even sell Jesus Christ in the open market for some under the table gratification. For my good friend of Peaceful Society shri. Soter D'Souza, I like to pose this question. Tell me, out of 189 panchayats in Goa, how many Sarpanches he can vouch for, who will not deal in illegalities and whether any one sarpanch, if he/she exists who does not tolerate illegalities will survive in office for more than 3 months. Therefore, if as the Director of Peaceful Society's Panchayati Raj, Soter must work towards these two things, if his Society wants to stay peaceful at all and not be tormented. (1) Do away with No Confidence Motions in the Panchayat Act. (2) Put adequate fool-proof sections that will send the Sarpanch and the Secretary behind bars for any illegality. Hi Lisette, At the outset let me thank you and the other committee members for the yeomen task of holding the recent Goan convention in Toronto. I think you should be proud of yourselves for being part of the effort. Two decades from now, as one reviews the Goan history in Canada, your names will certainly be mentioned. To me the issue is: Two decades from now will someone be writing well about Goans in Canada (and North America); as a positive successful community? Or will it be a history of a community that will be lamented for lack of growth, divisiveness and petty mindedness? As individuals we likely will be doing pretty well. One of the crux is as you put: Should this be a convention for 100 people, even as the Toronto population (alone) is in excess of 20,000? I view this convention to serve the Goan community of North America; just as the Bengali convention in downtown Toronto, held a few weeks earlier, served their community, with 6,000+ attendees, paying a registration fee of hundred dollars ($100:00), compared to the Goan registration of two hundred and fifty. I think this is a take home message to all organizers. Please do not spin the attendance numbers. I heard at a recent medical presentation, One can come to any conclusion, if one beats the data hard enough. I think the above are fundamental issues of Goan conventions that we should be engaged in dialog, instead of the mudslinging that some view is occurring. I do not see much mudslinging, but I am not on the committee, and I do not read all the posts. By the same token as a committee member you and others should not take it personally any discussion / post-mortem on the convention. Your reproach with a 'velvet glove' will moderate a few - some of whom are your admirers, as seen from their recent posts. Do you not think we should apply the same standards and yard-stick? Perhaps a good topic for the next Goan convention is reviewing the art of communication on Goanet with regard and respect; and focusing on the idea / topic; rather than the individual. It would have been impossible to achieve the level of interaction and intimacy the convention provided if we had larger groups. Quite frankly I cannot imagine any room that could have housed 10,000 people for an effective presentation even 20 years ago. Should the next Convention's goals be to have a much larger crowd, than their organizational plans and goals will have to be different from the Toronto group.We had a 100-110 people, 80 were paid registrants and the rest were volunteers, observers, presenters.

And his successor Albuquerque for shifting Portugal's Asian capital from Kochi to Goa. Lisbon's men gave Mario Miranda a great place to grow up and outgrow. They packed into the 16th century Konkan land every sign of a European conquest. Prelates and proctors to tailcoats and trousseaus. Seasoned by the West Coast sun through some 400 years, this was the landscape that greeted the six-year-old when dad, Daman's administrador, retired and the family moved back to the ancestral home in Loutolim. The house itself, then over 250 years old with 30-odd rooms, was a world to explore. A Eurasian galaxy was waiting outside. The boy loved the wicked pencil. He began a diary of doodles that grew into sketches, portraits, caricatures and cartoons. A spread of visual parody the European Empire builder hadn't bargained for. A spread that marks Mario out as our only outdoor cartoonist — a comic artist more than a cartoonist. One who learned firsthand from what he saw around him. Not from the printed cartoons of venerable seniors as is customary. An early influence of Ronald Searle the master himself talked him out of. The acolyte was told to go and find his signature tune. He did and how! Goa gave him enough to look at and a challenge few deadline-dreading cartoonists would touch. To include rather than exclude. Mario is so inclusive that when you step into a café with his wall-scale mural, the comic frame grabs you. Grin like Godbole and bear it. Meticulous detailing of architectural nuances, the irresistible impulse to ink in windswept clotheslines to that odd cat on a bar stool, the graphic wit to convert an accidental drop of black ink into a crow in flight. All of this goes into the Mario backdrop against which is set a carnival of comedy. Dogs jumping out of the frame, men up to no good and women in all shapes and sizes -- unlike Don Martin's, the maddest of Mad magazine's madmen, whose overweight women, editors feared, would crash through the page. This tropicalised Euro idiom travelled as easily as the Miranda couple. To every nook and naughty corner of the world. His hosts apart, we have his editors to thank for. Had they slotted him as a news cartoonist, he would have been reduced to a doodling Dilbert, a cardboard cubicle creature. The political cartoon was never close to his heart. A comic strip must have been a close enough trap. (No dearth of characters -- Fonseca, Bundeldass, Nimboopani….) That would have left him with no leisure either. With a weekday business cartoon and a weekend display, a soft take on the politico, he winds up his journalistic work and turns to what he does best. Create pure fun on paper. Fun that is largely visual, but not entirely. The boy who chose to draw his diary rather than write it isn't text-averse. He christens his characters with easy wordplay and his caption doesn't stare you in the face. It speaks. This is remarkable because there was nothing English about his upbringing. Mario is an Italian name; grandma loved Italian operas. His first language was Portuguese; ancestors had converted to Roman Catholicism in the early days of occupied Goa. He didn't know a word of English till he joined St. Joseph's School in Bangalore. Late-learning worked. As well as it did for Cartoonist Vicky who fled his home in Hungary to land tongue-tied in, of all places, the World War II Fleet Street, where he was soon a rave for his very English humour. A fine array of writers has written for this book -- Manohar Malgonkar, Nissim Ezekiel, Vinod Mehta and Ranjit Hoskote. The sole miss is a peer review. Where are the social cartooning peers? There isn't even a weak clone around. Despite a tradition, one of the best outside the West, our cartooning is almost wholly news-driven. In any case, no Mario successor can emerge from newspapers that stampsize or bury the cartoon. Comics and animation industries could spring a surprise. Meanwhile, let's have more of Mario. He is still young. How young, if I mention, he'll kill me. Buy the book and find out.

Hello Albert, I have been following this debate for a long time, what you said is 100% right, there are people who preach. In todays date to repair an old house is really hard, you just try to even repair the roof, firstly you cannot find people, if you find the people the cash is the problem. We in goa are now getting use to staying in small rooms, where each one has his own privacy, those days are gone where you had one radio and the whole house had to listen to the same, today, every one wants his own space. The families in Goa are too shrinking, its no more 5 kids house it come down to 1 or 2 max 3. Maintaining these houses can take dig a big hole in your pockets, and then in todays world, kids want to seperate and have their own. The best prices in todays times is offered by non-catholics, I think if they dont sell it at the right price then its stupidity. there was another post saying that one should wait for the property to rise, but that person did not say how long, let me tell you that property prices have never come down, if you have sold something today for 80 lacs, then after 5 years the same place will be sold for 100 lac any way. My advice to all is that if you think the price is right for you go ahead and sell, because the cash to in hand means that you can buy something else, day by day the power of buy with a rupee is decreasing. Its time we live peacefully and not bother if our neighbour is catholic or not as long as he is living peacefully in his house. Catholic and non catholic have lived in harmony for over hundred years in goa, why are we today pointing fingers at them, was the state of goa, not hindu, before the portuguese came, and was there no mogul raj on it, my request to all goans is just dont try to dig graves, as there are many skeletons there, which will only escalate things.
