[Goanet] Yet another Tanzanian in the news

2021-10-08 Thread Anita Dias
Aliya Mawani has been appointed by PM Justin Trudeau as Canada's Ambassador to
the State of Kuwait. Born in Dodoma.
But...Her parents Nurjehan and Nizar Mawani are originally from Zanzibar. Moved
to the mainland in the late 60s...

Btw all---there is a beautiful clip of Tanzania circulating. It was selected as
Country of the Month.
I presume Stephen has placed a restriction on sharing these types of clips

You would be amazed at how many times TZ is mentioned on CBC on various
interesting aspects and topics; also, in TV movies, thriller series, and docs
etc etc...inc Murder She Wrote!
Many years ago, I came across an interview article on people traversing the
globe - vacation, exploring, anthropology, work assignments, volunteering. A
fascinating list. Some were young families.
The country favoured by majority of them was Tanzania. Not only for its
wildlife/scenery/ecology/the rift valley which continues to widen albeit slowly
- but its people!

Sad to hear about Richard Leakey's death.
He certainly put the then Tanganyika in the spotlight.
May he rest in peace.

Even their daughter is involved in the field.
Surely though Mel - you must have met Richard Leakey and wife Meave. Either at
the 'dig' or the Uni of Nairobi?

The Leakeys made their way into our history book at St Joe's in Dar..
Too bad I never kept it.
A slim book - orange coloured cover with a giraffe painted on it. Packed with
so much info.

It's a thought to ponder:-that life did indeed start in what is now TZ millions
of years ago.

Imagine. The white man began life in that basin of 'TZ' and was possibly very
dark! Maybe black.
I wonder if the late Richard Leakey wondered about that.
What do you think?

Yes, that was a lucky break that the Falklands was not considered seriously,
just as turn of the 19th century British offer to exiled European Jews to give

Luckily the bookish Jews researched Uganda, and refused it on the basis that

[Goanet] Writing with Fire...on Independent Lens (PBS)

2022-04-04 Thread Anita Dias
Hi All

The documentary by Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh (they are a husband-wife team
who live in Delhi) that was the underdog nominee at this year's Oscars was
screened last night on PBS (Public Broadcasting Service). 11pm.
Hope those in the Buffalo-Toronto area watched it.
It may be repeated this evening at 10 pm???
Under the program title of Independent Lens.

The filming crew were only 3. Rintu and Sushmit and another camera man.
Highlights the 3 Dalit women journalists- Meera, Suneeta, Shyamkali. How they
go into hostile spaces yet determinedly get what they are seeking with their
interviews; and probing questions (why do you think a cow means more than a
woman? a question to a young man fervently entrenched in Hindu nationalism; his
reply was mind boggling).
Their gentleness and firmness with introducing the digital experience ie
smartphones to other Dalit women.
It is a loaded documentary:- powerful/ poignant/ humourous/ full of
bravado/nerve and charm/ a stillness unlike seen among many present-day
journalists/ determination/ unafraid to push back or leap-frog boundaries.
They have such lovely smiles.

Slightly less than 1 1/2 hour.

(Btw --Their paper is called Khabar Lahariya (News Wave); apparently available
on YouTube).

2022-01-14 Thread Anita Dias
That's good to hear Eddie. I have heard and know about him but immaterial if he
- Rishi Sunak was present at the BYOB party.
His integrity will come into play if he was at it.
That is what I am focusing on.
If he is in the line-up for being the next PM; it is an important aspect.

A shameful incident that took place in May 2020 is only now being revealed!!
Therefore--Would it not be better to know now then later?
WHO was at it???

We know his dad ( an MD) is from Kenya...AND his mum Usha ( a pharmacist) is
from Tanzania ie Dar; that she went to Shaaban Roberts Sec School.
Parents with integrity!

Goans - whether in Portugal or India or anywhere in the world were literally
falling over themselves/drooling when Antonio Costa was elected.
After all you too had many clippings on him on Goan Voice-didn't you?

I have no idea why you are bringing Costa into this conversation.
He has no bearing on it. On Brit politics!

I think there is a change developing ---where integrity is the name of the game
in politics.
As sooner or later the true colours show.

Re: [Goanet] Odds In Favor Of Indian-Origin Chancellor Rishi Sunak As Pressure Mounts On British Prime Minister Boris Johnson To Resign

2022-01-16 Thread Anita Dias
Hi. Thx
Oh wow.
Good to know that fact finding is done.

It depends on how it is all perceived and time lines.
What is also actually going on behind the scenes.
Once the Portuguese opened up trading routes/sea faring lanes to India
-interest was generated within other European powers. (The land route was held
by the Ottoman empire for the longest time- an alternative route had to be
found ie sea to the countries of the East -not only India)
The 1st way to go about checking out a country of course is through trade.
That opens windows not only on the materials available, but also the people and
its rulers. Religions involved. The behaviour. The langauges. More interest if
fragmented. I think India's population was well over 200 mill...let alone it
had existed since well over the BCE...India is quoted in the Bible btw;
purchase of its elephants and the mahouts! Britain's pop was a mere 2 million
or so.

There were all these nawabs, different empires etc ...warring with each other.
But also the 2 main faith groups- Muslims and Hindus---sometimes at peace with
each other; but quite often at loggerheads. All this was noted by the British
East India Trading company officials. Reported back to Britain.
Though a few on the ground---they were handpicked for perceptive skills.
Britain was not going to send shiploads of its army without strategies.
Britain had not fared well with its North American expeditions. It began to
look eastwards.
The Brits have an interesting way of thinking--insular being an island nation
but also subtle strategies mixed with protective, predatory skills.

Though huge tracts of land were seized in 1757 (War of Plassey)...much work,
speculation, reporting and planning among BEITCo/British officials/ the govt
had been occurring since 1600. Could have been much earlier. On how to decimate
the richest country in the world at the time...ie India.
(To change the Indian economy to a colonial economy.
To pit Muslims v Hindus)
Hence my calculation of 400---give or take a few years!

They could not be bothered with Goa. It was already held by another Eurpoean
power!
Britain did observe much though.
BUT
Britain had decided it was going after the rest of India! To make it ---its
Jewel in the Crown!

Anita...mea culpa! But impressed with the interest generated- I don't mind
being corrected either. I am always on a learning curve

Comment:

The Brits ruled in India for 200 years . From the war of Plassey in 1757 to
1947 Independence of India.
The British East India (Tea) Company was created in 1600, so there were few
Brits in India after that.

Now when it comes to 400 year rule, the Romans ruled Britannia for about 400
years from 43 AD to 410 AD although Julius Cesar was in Britain with his army
in 55BC. When the Romans left, Britain was invaded by the Saxons and in 1106
the Normans under William The Conqueror took over after the Battle of Hastings.

The Portuguese on the other hand were in India over 400 years from 1505 to 1961
although Vasco Da Gama visited some Indian ports in 1498.

I thought you might like to know.

Many Catholics /Christians tend to forget that Christ was a Jew.

1938---as per the link. Just before WW2! How could he possibly have known to

Re: [Goanet] Why the West is reckoning with caste bias now: Caste raises its ugly head in the USA!

2022-04-28 Thread Anita Dias
The West should not give in to idiocy like this...
The West should tell them to take a hike
No matter how well educated a person is or how intelligent- it is still
befuddling that stupidity exists.
Hindus believe in reincarnation; death is the equalizer.
I doubt there are specific animals (or worms) for reincarnated Dalits,
Brahmins etc.
So why can they not just get on with life. What and why then was the purpose of
migration?
Oh alas, stupid me---I thought it was to better one's life and the family. For
safety and security. To throw off manmade barriers.
But no---the caste system gets packed along in the baggage...
And after years, the rot in the baggage manifests itself!

True But 'Real time' images can be biased too.
Ukranian soldiers demonstrated racial biases against the Africans and
Indians...acc to some reports pushing/shoving them with their weapons and being
very unpleasant. Threatening them too.
Treating them like animals..herding them in various directions. We will never
know the truth until after all this is over...for fear of other threats to
non-white racial groups.
Mankind does not learn from its past errors.

Wars do bring out many variables in emotive behaviour!

"A picture is worth a thousand words" has never been more true than what we see
everyday of the Russian/Ukraine war.
All wars have wanton death and destruction, immeasurable pain and suffering,
unfairness and hypocrisy. I think this war is different because of the
unprecedented coverage of 'real time' images that haves a visceral effect on us.

My take on Russian “invasion” of Ukraine

Since time immemorial, invasions/devouring has been happening and will continue
in the future, so why so much uproar of present Russian “invasion” of Ukraine

It has always happened/will happen that the stronger will invade/devour the
weaker

Larger Animals will devour the weaker animals - Lions,Tigers, Cheetahs etc will
devour deer, lambs, cows, buffaloes etc
Bigger fish will devour smaller fish etc

Stronger countries will invade weaker countries - stronger empires will invade
weaker empires

Many of the present NATO countries (British, France, Germany, Portugal, Spain,
Dutch etc.) have “invaded” ENTIRE CONTINENTS like The Americas, Africa,
Australia, & large parts of Asia

Present day America has “invaded” many countries like Vietnam, Iraq, Syria etc
& installed US friendly regimes with immeasurable collateral damage to
civilians & property

Also India “invaded” & dismembered east Pakistan & created an India friendly
Bangladesh

It is customary that if you are powerful you can create boundaries & define
democracy, rebels/terrorists or freedom fighters

Hope you enjoyed reading my take on the recent buzz on Russia/Ukraine conflict

[Goanet] Release of the September 2022 issue of The Global Goan magazine

For the first time since the launch of The Global Goan, this issue has been
released with a delay, and you have my apologies – my fault, but totally out of
my control.

It has been three years since we launched, and with each passing issue, we have
been growing, and growing to our little over half a million readers each month
– and you are one of these treasured readers of ours who have taken the trouble
to not just read, but to also share our link to all your contacts.

Personally, I am overwhelmed by your support. As of this morning, I already
had more than 14000 emails in my inbox, all asking what happened!! Well, the
truth of the matter is that I am sick, and had to undergo major surgery on the
30th of August. And unfortunately, I could not work on the magazine for the
whole of that fortnight, mainly due to this AND the fact that I decided to give
priority time to my grandchildren when they are around.

Please do enjoy this lovely issue of the magazine which has come out really
well after the delay. Also remember to remind your friends to share the link
when you share it with them.

Re: [Goanet] Stephen Lobo: actor in new series Allegiance on CBC on Wednesdays.

2024-03-04 Thread Anita Dias
Hi Mervyn et al

I knew there was a Stephen Lobo in the cast of Little Mosque...
But I could never figure out 'who' as the credits rolled too fast.
J J looked so Iranian.
( I had several Iranian friends in the UK).
I googled him as I watched Episode 2 of Allegiance as I remembered I had seen
him before.

Btw Allegiance is a very edgy Canadian drama- well acted, credible, great
script.
A mix of 4 Ps- policing, politics, power, personal lives...and throw in the
justice system for good measure!

Doc,
His relatives are on this forum.

I remember watching Little Mosque on the Prairie when I was in Toronto.

I did not know then that there was a Goan in the cast.
