Re: [PWA API] Uploading albums and photos after May 1?

2016-04-06 Thread Mark Otway
Flickr provide 1TB of photo storage free, so that’s an option. There’s a few
other services too. I guess it depends what you actually use Picasa for.

Personally, I’m leaving my stuff in Google Photos - I can’t be bothered to move
to an alternative service when there seems little point to do so. The current
upload/download APIs will continue to work, even if you can’t modify photos in
Picasa online (but I never did that anyway).

I’ll continue to use the Picasa Desktop app until something better comes along
(I haven’t used its sync facility for around a year now, ever since I wrote my
own background sync app - https://github.com/Webreaper/PicasawebSync
). All my tags are embedded in the
actual JPG files, so if I modify them locally and upload they’ll be persisted
when my photos are uploaded.

It’s unclear from Google’s documentation if the revised API will allow a photo
to be re-uploaded (i.e., over-written), but if not, I’ll just change my Sync
app to delete and then upload a new copy.

At some point, I’m presuming that Google will announce a new set of official
APIs for Google Photos, at which point I’ll update my app to use them.

Aside from uploads, mutation support will be removed from the API. The

Modifying the properties of an album

Updating a photo
Providing your own video thumbnail
Deleting a photo
So this means I will only be able to upload photos but can no longer alter any

Will there be any other API to make these alterations like a Google Photos API?
Or will we be left with a way to only retrieve content created through the

Re: [PWA API] Uploading albums and photos after May 1?

2016-04-06 Thread Mark Otway

So it depends what you’re talking about. If you’re talking about Picasa the
desktop application (where you edit your photos) then it will continue working.
My wife also uses Picasa to view/edit images, and with the Wordpress plugin
uploads images directly to her site. All of this is basically offline stuff.

It doesn’t sound like you actually use Picasaweb - the online version of Picasa
- directly, so perhaps you won’t be impacted at all.

Yes, I do use the desktop application, fun and easy to use for an
amateur... I've been very busy placing all the irreplaceable shots, very
old ones etc into albums and sending them off to Google + ... so no harm
done and I'll just wait and see what transpires... by the way where are
you based... I'm in Australia, I do a great many travel and history blogs
which is where the Picasa ease of use comes in handy...

Thanks again, you've set my mind at rest.

Re: [PWA API] An important update on the Picasa Web Albums Data API

2016-04-06 Thread Teri Brooks
I use the Picasaweb.com API for all of my clients' websites. So they just
log in to picasaweb.com to upload their own photos which appear on their
website immediately. Is that what's going away? If I have them download the
Picasa desktop app instead, will they still be able to do this? If not,
should I ask my clients to save copies of all their photos for when
Picasaweb goes away? I guess I'll have to add their photos to their sites
manually, which will be an enormous amount of work because so many of my
clients use Picasaweb. I've used the Flickr API, and it's terribly slow to
load on the page, so that's not even an option. And I don't think a Google
Photos API exists. Picasaweb has been fantastic. My clients even have free
phone apps where they can take pics with their phones, upload them in one
click to Picasaweb, and they're on the website immediately. Is there
anything else out there that's similar (besides Flickr)?

They already gave several months' notice, I'd be *extremely* surprised if
this had any impact on their decision. The outcry about Google Reader
shuttering was several orders of magnitude louder than this, and it closed
anyway (and the service isn't shutting, it's just migrating and having API
limitations applied).

Re: [PWA API] Uploading albums and photos after May 1?

2016-04-06 Thread Robin van Sloten
I am not sure it will stop working... The way I read the posts is that
retrieving of photos and albums will remain to function as it does now, but
the API will no longer allow us to create or alter any content. But since
all my Picasa photos are in Google photos as well and vice versa, I suppose
if I use Google Photos to upload a photo, I al still able to retrieve it
with the Picasaweb API.
I'd just like to get an official statement that this is true. I use this
for websites as well, and if this becomes a read-only API it is fine with
me. I just want to know how I am supposed to get content into it then.

I might have a look at S3 as well, thanks for the suggestion.
