David A. Hastings wrote in "The Geographic Information Systems: GRASS
HOWTO" (Nov. 1997) the following description on p. 10:

"The Spearfish data base covers two 7.5 minute topographic sheets in
the northern Black Hills
of South Dakota, USA. It is in the Universal Transverse Mercator
Projection. It was
originally created by Larry Batten (now of the Environmental Systems
Research Institute's
office in Boulder, Colorado) while he was with the U. S. Geological
Survey's EROS Data
Center in South Dakota. The data base was enhanced by USA/CERL and cooperators."

So: Larry Batten , USGS EROS Data Center in South Dakota and USA/CERL
and cooperators.

Here the PDF

but it is also at bottom of this page:

Hi Markus, Vaclav, all,

who were the original authors of the Spearfish dataset in 1993 (3 decades ago!)
?

Best,
Peter

Happy to assist here (we can do preparations off-list):

- Spearfish:
  https://grass.osgeo.org/download/data/#SpearFishDataset
  --> Original documentation from 1993:
https://grass.osgeo.org/sampledata/spearDB.pdf

- North Carolina: see e.g.
  https://grassbook.org/datasets/datasets-1st-edition/
  https://grassbook.org/datasets/datasets-2nd-edition/
  https://grassbook.org/datasets/datasets-3rd-edition/
There are different versions available starting from 2002 (GRASS GIS
5, 6, 7) which IMHO should all be tracked.

Best,
Markus

[GRASS-PSC] DOI for GRASS reference data sets

2023-03-26 Thread Peter Löwe
Hello PSC,

I would like to suggest to register persistent DOI for GRASS GIS related
reference data sets such as Spearfish and North Carolina by preserving them in
the Open Access repository Zenodo (www.zenodo.org).

There are already several GRASS-related datasets on Zenodo:
https://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/DOI#GRASS_GIS

One indicator of their relevance for science are the access- and download
numbers from Zenodo, e.g. https://zenodo.org/record/3359632#.ZCBTjXZBxD8

Kind regards,
Peter
