[GRASS-user] Open Jump User survey : OSGeo India
Hi All, at OSGeo the Indian chapter Open Jump is the most used and evangelised software along with GRASS GIS. 1. It is used as a GIS that can be spread to the beginner and expert alike. 2. We have a mock exercise 'Locating a site for a Nuclear power plant', using a set of layers, which endears GIS to the user. 3. Project with OpenJUMP: For the parliamentary constituency of Rajahmundry we have used GRASS, OpenJUMP and ILWIS extensively. This is going to be presented at FOSS4G 2008. 4. OpenJUMP + PostGIS For Geologists we teach 'Mineral Prognostication', with Mock Exercise data which has become very popular. 5. OpenJUMP + Inkscape For Geologists to make cartographic outputs acceptable in standard formats. Thanks to the 'Vertex symbols plugin' and Printer plugin.. OpenJUMP is THE GIS for Geological maps. Mock Exercises: Soon would like to add the mock exercises freely down loadable. Re: [GRASS-user] r.digit. no zoom/pan option while digitizing ?
Hi Nagesh, Options 1. use Qgis for digitisation and then save the finished product in a GRASS data set. Qgis has many tools to help digitisation. 2. You may also use OpenJUMP, for digitisation but it can save the finished vector as a shapele which needs to be imported in GRASS. I remember that a couple of years ago, this (Option 1) was in fact suggested to be by this list. Cheers Ravi Kumar --- On Wed, 9/24/08, Nagesh Bhatkar [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: From: Nagesh Bhatkar [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [GRASS-user] r.digit. no zoom/pan option while digitizing ? To: grass-user@lists.osgeo.org Date: Wednesday, September 24, 2008, 11:27 AM Hello Everyone, I was looking to create a raster mask by hand using r.digit module. The geocoded map is large and zooming is essential. There's no zoom/pan option while digitizing. I have to zoom into part of the raster map prior to running the module r.digit using d.zoom. I have to exit the r.digit module after each segment of the mask is created. And then reset region to fit the entire map. And then display the mask created and then select the next region to be zoomed in. Create many masks and then patch them using r.patch. I have gone through the archives, It says, One can't force a running r.digit program to change the region it uses internally. So one could change the region stored in the WIND file using g.region, but that won't affect r.digit. Is there any other way to create a raster mask! This needs to be done on a daily basis, and it needs to be created by those who have little GIS or GRASS knowledge or experience. The critical aspect is to manually draw/digitize the critical likely or possible areas. And I am struggling with v.digit doing this, but it's not the main problem. (which v.digit do you use?) Perhaps Featureserver would be a good idea here: http://featureserver.org/ http://www.paolocorti.net/2008/02/21/a-day-with-featureserver-1/ (random demo: http://dev.riverchange.org/featureserver/ use the + at top right to activate WMS SHIFT-left-mouse-button to zoom in via box ) Or the new digitizer in GRAS 6.4: http://grass.osgeo.org/screenshots/vector.php - New vector digitizer tool with advanced editing features The key issue is attaching attribute data to the polygonal regions that define the period over which the likely or possible areas apply, as the graphic shows. Both Featureserver and GRASS digitizer support this. ALSO, the boundary data and the attributes (the valid Date period) need to be exported to an ascii text file which is then ftp'ed to a central location (new) v.out.ascii export attributes in point mode. You could export the ASCII data in standard format, then convert centroids to points and in a second run of v.out.ascii export attributes. — the end users use their own software to combine other such files to create a graphic (actually the one I am showing). Now, combining the exported data into the format needed by the end user is not an issue, At this point I would export SHAPE format which includes the attributes in the DBF table. it's really a matter of how to most efficiently (easily) get the Starting and Ending dates into the attributes of the polygons. I would just use two columns in the attribute table. Also, should I try to use a separate vector map for each polygon of the same type (likely or possible) or should they be in different layers? IMHO yes. I'll have to write detailed instructions covering how to do this, but I need to know how to do this first! I'm very open to suggestions… Hope this helps, Markus ___ grass-user mailing list grass-user@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/grass-user ___ grass-user mailing list grass-user@lists.osgeo.org http://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/grass-user
