US President-elect Barack Obama may have cultivated a left-of-center image
for himself, but Sonal Shah, the Indian-American advisor in his transition
team, has well established rightwing leanings.

The 40-year-old economist has been associated with the overseas activities
of the Sangh Parivar. She was a national coordinator of the Vishwa Hindu
Parishad of America campaign to raise funds for Gujarat earthquake victims
 in 2001.

Her father Ramesh Shah, a vice-president of the Overseas Friends of the
Bharatiya Janata Party (OFBJP), had campaigned for LK Advani in Gandhinagar
during the 2004 Lok Sabha elections. He had also briefly traveled with
Advani during his Bharat Udaya Yatra, countrywide election tour.

Sonal's brother Amit and sister Rupal are now based in Ahmedabad, running a
voluntary organisation, indicorps. Its website says its aim is to engage
the most talented young Indians from around the world on the frontlines of
 India's most pressing challenges.

I returned to India eight years ago, Amit told *HT* before suddenly
deciding not to talk any further. An SMS from Rupal said no comments from
here, and added that Sonal be contacted through email for any queries.

A senior functionary of the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), involved in
the global activities of the Parivar, said only Ramesh is associated with
its activities. He works with the OFBJP and supports, among other things,
the Ekal Vidyalayas, the functionary said. Ekal Vidyalayas are
single-teacher primary schools run by the RSS with the aim of inculcating
Hindu values in children, mostly in tribal regions.

The Shah family hails from Sabarkantha in Gujarat but Sonal was born in
Mumbai. Ramesh Shah moved to the US in 1970. Two years later, Sonal, Rupal
and their mother joined him in New York. The family later moved to Houston.
Sonal has worked as vice-president with Goldman Sachs and also in the US
Department of Treasury. Currently, she is with the global development team
 of Google.org.

Volunteers at the indicorps office in Ahmedabad were under instructions not
 to speak anything.

[GreenYouth] press statement from university community regarding abvp vandalism

2008-11-08 Thread hany

Press Statement

9th November 2008.

A protest march against the ABVP's fascist assault and vandalism was
held by the University Community on the on 7th November, starting from
Vivekananda statue, Arts Faculty of Delhi University. A large number
of students and teachers from Delhi University were joined by JNU and
Jamia students, and a march of more than 600 people traversed all
colleges in the North Campus raising slogans.

The march also stopped in front of DUSU office for around five
minutes, raising slogans against ABVP as well as Nupur Sharma, the
President and her associates who attacked the seminar on 6th November.
The march proceeded to the Vice Chancellor's office, where a protest
meeting was held. Students and teachers in one voice spoke against
ABVP's communal-fascist politics, the inaction of the Delhi Police as
well as the administration's attempt to curb the rights of speech and
expression.

A delegation of students and teachers, which also included the
representatives of University Community, the organizers of the public
meeting of the 6th November, met the DU administration and demanded
immediate and strict action against the ABVP lumpens who were
responsible for full-scale vandalism, physical assault and inciting
communal frenzy. The university administration was asked to file an
FIR against the culprits, and to constitute a time-bound enquiry into
the incident.

The ABVP and its masters, BJP, have however continued to justify their
action. They, including Nupur Sharma have been giving communally
charged statements in the media targeting Prof. SAR Geelani in
particular and the university community in general. The ABVP has been
spreading completely baseless allegations and are hounding the
organizers of the public meeting and the members of the group,
University Community. Yesterday the ABVP tried filed a false case
alleging that four members of the group tried to attack the DUSU
office. The white lie however was for all to see, the march was
conducted peacefully and no such incident as alleged by the ABVP has
ever occurred. The members of media were present, and a large
contingent Delhi Police personnel was deployed which accompanied the
whole course of the protest march, and they would have reported about
it had such incident occurred. A number senior teachers of the
university also were present, who marched along with the students. It
is to be noted that even before the march reached in front of the DUSU
office, the gates of the office were closed. After their fascist
politics getting successfully repelled and thoroughly exposed, the
ABVP and its masters in RSS and BJP are now resorting to spreading
rumours and baseless allegations in order to save their face. We
condemn such fascist tactics of the ABVP and the sangh-parivar to
intimidate and repress the democratic voices of the campus.

The University Community takes strong objection to the false and
dangerous propaganda from a person holding a responsible office like
the President of the student union the largest Central University of
the country. Moreover, by calling a teacher of the university a
terrorist, ABVP and Ms Nupur Sharma has insulted the entire student of
the university. We demand an unconditional apology from Ms Nupur
Sharma for her objectionable remark. By planning and organising the
attack under her leadership personally (she personally led the vulgar
attack on the spot) she made an aborted attempt to disrupt a meeting
which was duly publicised and held at a venue with the permission of
the University Authorities. ABVP is also challenging all the
democratic structures of the university. In fact, this very act goes a
long way to prove the concerns expressed by the organizers about the
increasing onslaught of the right- wing Hindu communal-fascist
forces in our country. This act and the brazen manner in which the
DUSU President has carried this act shows us that the threat looms
much larger than we can envisage. It is not only states like Gujarat
or Orissa that are witness to this onslaught, even institutions of
higher learning in the national capital are not free from the clutches
of Hindu communal fascist goons.

Ms Nupur Sharma has also gone on record saying that she herself would
have spat on SAR Geelani. This also shows that the DUSU President has
no respect for the law or the judicial system of the country, let
alone codes of civilized conduct in public places. We should all think
whether such a person has any right to hold a responsible office. It
is the typical duplicity of politics of the Hindutva brigade to take
recourse to the law when it is convenient for their divisive politics
and to break it to run their writ as they are against all forms of
democratic functioning or accountability.

It is also interesting to see the ABVP student who resorted to a
heinous act of spitting on respected Geelani is trying play another
drama in sections of media that like Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur,
another ABVP

A story for serious follow up and not for big TRPs of the channels.

*Salutation to a brave soul who valiantly fought her honor*

By Vidya Bhushan Rawat

They came in large number with their OB vans, photographers and anchor
persons. Much before she could come and join the press, the hall at the
Indian Social Institute in Delhi was fully overcrowded. Every body present
thought that for that day there was enough 'news' to spread the TRPs. I had
never seen such a 'concern' from the commercial media for the communal
violence against the Christians, so it was quite surprising that the popular
faces of the TV were there to broadcast live the 'historic' press
conference.

Yes, I am talking about Sister Meena, an Adivasi nun who was raped by the
Hindutva's thugs in kandhamal district of Orissa On August 24th. In her
statement made to the press

She said,

*On August 24th, around 4:30 pm, hearing the shouting of a large crowd, at
the gate of Divyajyoti Pastoral Centre, I ran out through the back door and
escaped to the forest along with others. We saw our house going up in
flames. Around 8:30 pm we came out of the forest and went to the house of a
Hindu gentleman who gave us shelter.

On 25th August, around1:30 pm,the mob entered the room where I was staying
in that house, one of them stopped me on my face, caught my hair and pulled
me out of the house. Two of them were holding my neck to cut off my head
with axe. Others told them to take me out to the road; I saw Fr. Chellan
also being taken out and being beaten. The mob consisting of 40–50 men was
armed with lathis, axes, spades, crowbars, iron–rods, sickles etc. They took
both of us to the main road. Then they led us to the burnt down Janavikas
building saying that they were going to throw us into the smouldering fire.

When we reached the Janavikas building, they threw me to the verandah on the
way to the dining room which was full of ashes and broken glass pieces. One
of them tore my blouse and others my undergarments. Father Chellan protested
and they beat him and pulled him out from there. They pulled out my saree
and one of the stepped on my right hand and another on my left hand and then
a third person raped me on the verandah mentioned above. When it was over, I
managed to get up and put my petticoat and saree. Then another young man
caught me and took me to a room near the staircase. He opened his pants and
was attempting to rape me when they reached there.

I hid myself under the staircase. The crowd was shouting where is that
sister, come let us rape her, at least 100 people should rape. They found
me under the staircase and took me out to the road. There I saw Fr. Chellan
was kneeling down and the crowd was beating him. They were searching for a
rope to tie us both of us together to burn us in fire. Someone suggested to
make us parade naked. They made us walk on the road till Nuagoan market
which was half a kilometer from there. They made to fold our hands and walk.
I was with petticoat and saree as they had already torn away my blouse and
undergarments. They tried to strip even there and I resisted and they went
on beating me with hands on my cheeks and head and with sticks on my back
several times.*

I am not putting the entire text which is already available to various
websites where the nun says openly how the police never protected her and it
was not even doing its basic duty of filing her FIR. Instead, it discouraged
her from doing so. Her horror story moved every one but more than that was
her immense courage to come in the forefront against the guilty who are
being protected by the inefficient and corrupt state government of Orissa.
For the past one year, the Hindutva's hate campaign against the Christian
missionaries in Orissa and other parts of the country have not resulted in
anything. Despite the terror the work of these communities in the far flung
areas of the country is praise worthy. Despite all the blames of evangelism,
the work of the missionaries in the poor communities in India is unparallel.
No one can deny the fact that such an enormous amount of work particularly
in the health and educational sector in India is much disproportionate to
the number of the community in the country, which denied education to large
part of the its masses named as Dalit-Bahujans and an educational set up
dominated by brahmanical elites of the country.

Orissa's horror story did not end in frightening the community workers. It
is terror in all the forms. From burning the churches, demolishing their
holy book, to attacking the social institutions of the community and even
when such things fails to dampen the spirit of the community then the final
assault. And the final assault is in the form of molestation, rape and
indignity heaped upon women and men both. It is beyond shock that such
mishaps of history are defended shamelessly on the television channels and
widely circulated internet debates.

So, it was refreshing to see

3) Indicorps and its Sangh affiliations

The South Asian Conference Council (SACC) at Yale University organized a
conference on solidarity in the South Asian community. The objective was to
increase social activism in the South Asian student community. The
conference included panels on youth activism and workers rights and
brought together some very progressive activists in the community (such as
Nahar Alam from Andolan, Saru Jayaraman from Restaurant opportunities
Center of New York, Chandra Bhatnagar from the ACLU to mention a few).
In conflict with this progressive list of speakers, the organizers also invited
Sonal Shah, vice president of Goldman Sachs and co-founder of Indicorps.
According to their website, Indicorps is a non-partisan, non-religious, non-
profit organization that encourages Indians around! the world to actively
participate in India's progress. While some of the organizations that
Indicorps works with are indeed secular and progressive, at issue was their
affiliation with organizations of the Sangh parivar. These connections range
from personal affiliation of Sonal Shah with the VHP-A (see
http://www.vhp-america.org/dynamic/modules.php?name=Newsfile=articlesid=13),
institutional affiliation of Indicorps with IDRF (IDRF is one of Indicorps´
supporters; see
http://www.indicorps.org/index.cfm?function=supporterslevel=1),
Indicorps´
involvement with Sangh parivar projects such as Ekal Vidyalaya (see
http://www.indicorps.org/index.cfm?function=partnerslevel=1). Perhaps
most questionable was Indicorps´ decision to accept an award from the
butcher of Gujarat Narendra Modi in November 2004, at a time when
numerous human rights activists have been threatened from continuing their
work (http://www.hrw.org/backgrounder/asia/india/gujarat/).

The conference organizers allowed a couple of progressive youth collectives
(Organizing Youth! and Youth Solidarity Summer) to read a statement and
ask Indicorps to explain their association with the Sangh Parivar. Far from
explaining, Sonal Shah admitted her affiliation to the VHP-A, claimed that
she would take money from anyone (including the KKK!), and used a young
Muslim volunteer to claim that Indicorps was in fact secular. Such is not the
kind of solidarity that one expects from a non-partisan, non-religious
organization. In fact, based on the evidence and Sonal Shah´s admission,
Indicorps can be listed as one of many front organizations of the Sangh
parivar in the US. Soon after this public discussion, the Patriotic Sons of
Mother India (a virulent Sangh outfit) posted a defence of Indicorps by
attempting to defame Youth Solidarity Summer as anti-India and anti-Hindu-
typical reaction from the Sangh for one of their own!

[GreenYouth] Fwd: The Many Faces of Sonal Shah..........By VIJAY PRASHAD

From: OISHIK SIRCAR [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Weekend Edition
November 7 / 9, 2008
The Many Faces of Sonal Shah
Obama's Indian

By VIJAY PRASHAD

Barack Obama has appointed John Podesta to run his transition. During the
lean years of the Bush administration, Podesta, native of Chicago, ran a
shadow cabinet for the Democrats. Since 2003, the home of this
government-in-exile has been the Center for American Progress (CAP), a
liberal think tank set-up to rival the Heritage Foundation and the American
Enterprise Institute. The money, about $10 million per year, came from
George Soros, Peter Lewis, Marion Sandler and Herb Sandler – the main
liberal financiers. CAP has its set of fellows. Many of them worked in some
capacity within the Clinton administration (where Podesta was Chief of
Staff). There are hard-nosed people like Rudy deLeon (who went through every
Defense secretariat in the Clinton years) and Jeanne Lambrew (who served as
a health analyst in the National Economic Council during the waning years of
the Clinton administration). But there are also the fresh faces, young
people who came to Washington with glowing references from the Ivy League.
Others marched over from the Hill, after serving various terms as staff
members for the Democratic warhorses. They have been groomed to be part of
the next Democratic administration. Their hibernation is over. Obama has
called.

The likely suspects have picked up the phone and moved to the transition
headquarters. Among them is a former CAP fellow and now Google employee,
Sonal Shah. Shah is well known in the South Asian American community, and is
a fixture in the Washington liberal circuit. The latter know her for her
Democratic credentials, most of which seem to lie somewhere between
neo-liberalism and welfare liberalism. The bleeding heart pauses, but then
ticks again to the tune of pragmatism. This is perfect material for the CAP,
which is hardly enthusiastic about the Democratic Leadership Council's total
commitment to triangulation (which means capitulation to conservatism), but
it is not averse to a little political calculus itself. Shah, a product of
the University of Chicago, shined her corporate shoes at Anderson Consulting
(who was Enron's accountant), which probably made it easier for her to go
into Clinton's Treasury Department, where she helped Robert Rubin put a U.
S. stamp on the post-1997 Asian economic recovery. The corporate side was
balanced with an interest in the ideology of giving back. When Bush took
office, Shah went to the Center for Global Development, and while there
joined her brother Anand in forming Indicorps. Knowing full well the desire
among many South Asian Americans to give back to their homeland, the Shahs
created an organization to help them go and volunteer in India, to do for
them what the Peacecorps did for young liberals in the 1960s. Shah left the
CAP to work for Goldman Sachs, and then went to Google. Shah's story is not
unlike that of most of the CAP fellows, many of whom honed their dexterity
at trying to reconcile the irreconcilable, capital and freedom, private
accumulation and human needs.

But there is a less typical side to the Shah story. Born in Gujarat, India,
Shah came to the United States as a two-year old. Her father, a chemical
engineer, first worked in New York before moving to Houston, and then moving
away from his education toward the stock market. The Shahs remain active in
Houston's Indian community, not only in the ecumenical Gujarati Samaj (a
society for people from Gujarat), but also in the far more cruel
organizations of the Hindu Right, such as the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP),
the Overseas Friends of the BJP (the main political party of the Hindu
Right) and the Ekal Vidyalaya. Shah's parents, Ramesh and Kokila, not only
work as volunteers for these outfits, but they also held positions of
authority in them. Their daughter was not far behind. She was an active
member of the VHPA, the U. S. branch of the most virulently fascistic outfit
within India. The VHP's head, Ashok Singhal, believes that his organization
should inculcate a fear psychosis among [India's] Muslim community. This
was Shah's boss. Till 2001, Shah was the National Coordinator of the VHPA.

In 2004, I ran into Shah at the South Asian Awareness Network conference in
Ann Arbor, Michigan. At an earlier panel I questioned her links to the Hindu
Right, and so asked people to be wary about her organization, Indicorps. She
was furious, and we had a bitter exchange in the Green Room. But at no point
did she deny her active connections to the Hindu Right. Her brother, Anand,
wrote to me not long after, concerned that Indicorps, which he runs
full-time from India, would be tainted by our tussle. I was curious about
Sonal's own personal relationship with the VHPA, I wrote back, That
sparked some concern for me. Of course we are free to have our multiple
associations, and there is no expectation that all our

Sir:

We congratulate the American people upon your
re-election by a large majority. If resistance to the
Slave Power was the reserved watchword of your first
election, the triumphant war cry of your re-election
is Death to Slavery.

From the commencement of the titanic American strife
the workingmen of Europe felt instinctively that the
star-spangled banner carried the destiny of their
class. The contest for the territories which opened
the dire epopee, was it not to decide whether the
virgin soil of immense tracts should be wedded to the
labor of the emigrant or prostituted by the tramp of
the slave driver?

When an oligarchy of 300,000 slaveholders dared to
inscribe, for the first time in the annals of the
world, slavery on the banner of Armed Revolt, when
on the very spots where hardly a century ago the idea
of one great Democratic Republic had first sprung up,
whence the first Declaration of the Rights of Man was
issued, and the first impulse given to the European
revolution of the eighteenth century; when on those
very spots counterrevolution, with systematic
thoroughness, gloried in rescinding the ideas
entertained at the time of the formation of the old
constitution, and maintained slavery to be a
beneficent institution, indeed, the old solution of
the great problem of the relation of capital to
labor, and cynically proclaimed property in man the
cornerstone of the new edifice — then the working
classes of Europe understood at once, even before the
fanatic partisanship of the upper classes for the
Confederate gentry had given its dismal warning, that
the slaveholders' rebellion was to sound the tocsin
for a general holy crusade of property against labor,
and that for the men of labor, with their hopes for
the future, even their past conquests were at stake in
that tremendous conflict on the other side of the
Atlantic. Everywhere they bore therefore patiently the
hardships imposed upon them by the cotton crisis,
opposed enthusiastically the proslavery intervention
of their betters — and, from most parts of Europe,
contributed their quota of blood to the good cause.

While the workingmen, the true political powers of the
North, allowed slavery to defile their own republic,
while before the Negro, mastered and sold without his
concurrence, they boasted it the highest prerogative
of the white-skinned laborer to sell himself and
choose his own master, they were unable to attain the
true freedom of labor, or to support their European
brethren in their struggle for emancipation; but this
barrier to progress has been swept off by the red sea
of civil war.

The workingmen of Europe feel sure that, as the
American War of Independence initiated a new era of
ascendancy for the middle class, so the American
Antislavery War will do for the working classes. They
consider it an earnest of the epoch to come that it
fell to the lot of Abraham Lincoln, the single-minded
son of the working class, to lead his country through
the matchless struggle for the rescue of an enchained
race and the reconstruction of a social world. [B]
