[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1637025] [NEW] upload subiquity to 16.04

2016-10-26 Thread Michael Hudson-Doyle
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
As part of the drive to stop using ppa:snappy-dev/image ppa for Ubuntu Core 16
builds, we need to get the console-conf package into xenial-updates.

[Test Case]
"apt install console-conf" succeeds. Ultimately building the core snap without
ppa:snappy-dev/image should succeed, but I think that requires more work.

[Regression Potential]
It's a new package, so none.

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1637026] [NEW] kill incorrectly parses negative PIDs

2016-10-26 Thread dann frazier
Public bug reported:

[Impact]
When kill is called with a negative argument, incorrect parsing can lead it to
call sys_kill(-1), thus sending a signal to all permitted processes on the
system. A couple of users have hit this while deploying Hadoop, which seems to
tickle this - basically killing everything on the system.

[Test Case]
Though I don't know what Hadoop is calling, here's a couple of ways to trigger
this:

One possibility is if kill were called w/ a numeric signal that
happened to start with a '1' and while omitting the required
argument:

kill -12

Another would be to specify a numeric signal (that again happened to
start with a 1) multiple times:
kill -13 -13 12345

[Regression Risk]
This is a backport from upstream that is already available in 16.10, with no
known regressions.

Bug description:
Tracking bug for SRU of ubuntu-image in Yakkety. I plan to ask for an
exception so that future uploads to 16.10 can track 17.04 Zesty.

  [Impact]

ubuntu-image 0.8 fixes several problems found during actual use, including LP:
#1632134 and LP: #1632085. These two bugs, and a few other minor issues not
tracked in Launchpad, affects users who try to build snappy images with
ubuntu-image. In particular, being able to set the image size is required for
the common use case of being able to boot a virtual machine with the resulting
  built disk image.

I am also asking for an SRU exception for ubuntu-image for several
  reasons:

  * snapd already has an SRU exception: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SnapdUpdates
Because ubuntu-image is built on top of snapd (the latter which does the
communication with the store to get the gadget.yaml spec), it makes sense
for ubuntu-image to *also* have an exception. The gadget.yaml specification
is still undergoing development as more use cases are identified, so
ubuntu-image will need to track changes in snapd.

  * ubuntu-image has no reverse dependencies. It's a leaf package in universe
so changes to it will have very minimal impact.

  * ubuntu-image is a new tool. People only started using it late in the
Yakkety release cycle so as it sees more use, changes will be likely. It
doesn't make much sense to limit uploads, which will only serve to hobble
the tool in 16.10.

  * For now, we want ubuntu-image as released into 16.10, 17.04, and the snap
store to be closely aligned, so that all uses are identical. You may wonder
why we want to upload it to both the snap store and the archive, but this is
useful since end-users may be more inclined to use the snap version, but
official images will use the archive version.

  [Test Case]

The QA process for ubuntu-image releases is outlined here:
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuImageUpdates

  [Regression Potential]

It is very unlikely, given the suite of tests we run, that the tool will
regress. More so, if it does, it should be very isolated in its effects, so
it can be quickly fixed with no significant impact on the rest of the archive.

With that, one can finally get snaps to install inside containers, but

[Group.of.nepali.translators] [Bug 1636583] Please test proposed package

2016-10-26 Thread Andy Whitcroft
Hello Joshua, or anyone else affected,

Accepted debootstrap into trusty-proposed. The package will build now
and be available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/debootstrap/1.0.59ubuntu0.6 in a
few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update
out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag
from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the
bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to
verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help
us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance!

Bug description:
The Hyper-V netvsc driver was looking at the incorrect status bits
in the checksum info. It was setting the receive checksum unnecessary
flag based on the IP header checksum being correct. The checksum
flag is skb is about TCP and UDP checksum status. Because of this
bug, any packet received with bad TCP checksum would be passed
up the stack and to the application causing data corruption.
The problem is reproducible via netcat and netem.

This had a side effect of not doing receive checksum offload
on IPv6. The driver was also also always doing checksum offload
independent of the checksum setting done via ethtool.

  d-i netcfg/hostname string

If the machine get a HOSTNAME from DHCP server or from a reverse
  lookup, netcfg/hostname doesn't take precedence.

  [2] - https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/installation-guide/example-preseed.txt

  [Regression Potential]

   * none expected, the change is trivial and has been intensively
jointly tested by myself and cyphermox.

  [Other Info]

   * Debian bug : https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=755848
Patch has been submitted to Debian
   * There is an old patch introduced in 2012 [Use netcfg/hostname for the
hostname if found. (Closes: #606636)] but that doesn't work as expected.

  ---Problem Description---
An install using a preseed file fails to configure the hostname of the system
being installed.

  Contact Information = eches...@us.ibm.com

  ---uname output---
  Ubuntu 15.04 ppc64le

Machine Type = Tuleta pKVM guest

  ---Debugger---
  A debugger is not configured

  ---Steps to Reproduce---
set up an automated install using a preseed file. Grub menu entry:

  menuentry "Test" {
  linux ubuntu-installer/ppc64el/vmlinux tasks=standard
pkgsel/language-pack-patterns= pkgsel/install-language-support=false auto=true
preseed/url=http://10.33.11.31/data/autoinst/ted.preseed
  initrd ubuntu-installer/ppc64el/initrd.gz
  }

The install will begin, and reach the hostname configuration screen,
then stop, waiting for input. The hostname is set in the preseed
  file, which is attached.

  Install method: http from ports.ubuntu.com

  Install disk info: n/a

  Install ISO Information: n/a

  *Additional Instructions for eches...@us.ibm.com:
-Post a private note with access information to the machine that the bug is
occuring on.

Some literature that is floating around -

when booting from an installation CD and using a preseed file on a
network, the installer will need answers to some questions (hostname,
network configuration, ...) before it can load the preseed file. On
the other hand, including a customized preseed file in a setup CD will
allow for more automation, but requires re-mastering of the CD.

The configuration of domain and host name, and keymap are still being
asked, even if you have them in your preseed file as shown above. So
if you want to kickstart the preseeded installation without a single
questions asked, append the following more options to kernel boot
  prompt:

  console-keymaps-at/keymap=us hostname=myhost domain=example.com
  locale=en_US

Perhaps David Heller can throw some light on this and let us know if
  its bug.

I'm booting and installing from the network. Even if I leave the hostname
related options out of my preseed, it still picks up and displays the correct
hostname from dhcp.

I'm not very familiar with this particular preseed option so I'm not sure how
it's supposed to behave. However, in a quick test on Ubuntu 15.04, adding
"netcfg/hostname=blah" to the kernel cmdline worked: it successfully overrode
the hostname from DHCP (the way it is usually set in my environment) with no
other changes required.

  In the preseed however, I
