Protecting the Crown

2000-05-15 Thread Henry

I need some advice. I'd like to protect the handle crown (that chuck of
cast aluminum around the ignition switch that holds the handlebars) from
getting anymore scratched up by my key chain, than it already is, while
having it look neat. I tried duct tape and quite frankly that ain't so hot.
I'd like to keep the price on the lower side rather than the higher side
(say under $25).

What do you all recommend?

Re: Girth matters...Friction semi fluff

2000-05-15 Thread wghalley

Greg
According to CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, 71st Ed. , pg 15-41,
"The coefficient of friction between two surfaces is the ratio of the force
required to move one over the other to the total force pressing the two
together. If F is the force required to move one surface over the other and
W, the force pressing the surfaces together, the coefficient of friction, u
= F / W." Note: u is actually the Greek letter mu which I can't type in
this format.

Therefore the friction force is = coefficient of (static) friction X total
force pressing the surfaces together (on a horizontal surface, the weight).
The coefficient for rubber is given as 1 to 4.

Actually,
I did take physics once. No make that twice. :)

Force (of friction) = coefficient of static friction X surface area in
contact

 or

Force (of friction) = coefficient of sliding friction X surface area in
contact

In the former case, if the centripetal force of the bike in the turn
exceeds the force
of friction, you will start to slide. Then, the latter takes effect.

Anyway, no way around it. Given the same compound, the wider tire will
grip
more, Unless it's over inflated to the point where the contact patch is
less then
the smaller sized tire's was when it was inflated properly.

Re: Girth matters...

2000-05-15 Thread Kevin Harrington

I agree with you, it is too dark inside a dog to
read... But riddle me this--why do longer snow skis
make you go downhill faster? Wouldn't more contact
patch produce more friction and slow you down? Where
is the "normal" force in your equation? When you
spread the weight (a constant, at least before
breakfast) over a larger surface area, you decrease
the "normal" force--the force that multiplies the
coefficient to get traction.
I'm going to try the stock sizes my next set, even the
130 front (I'll just have to work out harder). I do
believe the 180's flat spot quicker, at least here in
Florida, where the cloverleafs are to few. I like the
Azarro's pretty much, but they don't have a 130 front
and I got the shakes back pretty early and they wander
a bit over 120...
Also, I never disagree with BOB ;)

Henry send me your address and I will mail you one of the little foam sheets
that I use. It is made by 3M and ~1/8" thick. I cut a hole for the keys and
trimmed it a little. It has been working well for a couple years now. Another
alternative would be some clear vinyl sheet like what is used for number
backgrounds for dirt bikes (if it is available in clear it would look better
than the foam material I use.)

Henry, I hate the scratches as well. So what I have done since my first
bike is to have a soft key tag and only the bike key on that ring.
Problem solved.

But then you may say, what if I lose the key. I always have a spare
hidden on it somewhere. Just don't tell anyone.

I really can't understand those people who think they have to have all
of their keys on one ring and then expect not to scratch stuff.

Thanks for the info on tires.

I went out and purchased a 170/60ZR17 Michelin Macadam 90XR. I wanted a

The front is still the 130 and will last this season.

We will see how it lasts. It will get a work out this weekend approx
1200 miles. Oh ya, the Michelin has a cool tread too!

Is it the owners manual or the shop/service manual that has the settings

The most simple solution is not to put any extra keys on your chain (joke)
Another solution might be to store your keys in a small leather bag, only
the contact key comes out and the keybag can hang in front of the crown.
This is what I do, and it works great

Welcome to the list. I put a Vance Hines SS2R on my GTS. The model made
for the YZF750 slips on. The only modification I made was to secure a small
metal plate the pipe with a hose clamp where the centerstand rubber stopper
would contact the pipe itself (you can see what I mean by looking at the
stock pipe). Some people on the list have just let the rubber piece rest
against the pipe (I don't know how it handles the heat on long rides). I
put a carbon fiber version on, but they make the pipe in SS too. BTW it
sounds great.

Re: Protecting the Crown

2000-05-15 Thread wghalley

Henry
I got a roll of 2" x 10 mil clear vinyl tape - found it at Quality Farm
Fleet. It was intended to repair vinyl "storm windows". I use it on the
passenger grab handles to protect them from bungies. The brand is Polyken
from Polyken Technologies, Mansfield, MA 02048 - at least that's what it
says on the inside of the roll.

I think it woud work for what you want.

Subject: Protecting the Crown

I need some advice. I'd like to protect the handle crown (that chuck of
cast aluminum around the ignition switch that holds the handlebars) from
getting anymore scratched up by my key chain, than it already is, while
having it look neat. I tried duct tape and quite frankly that ain't so
hot.
I'd like to keep the price on the lower side rather than the higher side
(say under $25).

What do you all recommend?
