For all the things the GTS isn't --fastest, lightest, slowest, etc. It IS THE
FASTEST STOPING BIKE OUT THERE. :) So for as fast as the R1 is I can out brake
them going into the corners, they pass me through the corners and out of the
corners but I can brake later and harder. :) I would rather enjoy an extra 30
hp or so, but I don't see an easy solution. So I devote my hoppups to the WR.

There was an exhaust canister kit listed on Brian Kearny's GTS page, carbon
fiber from Smith Brothers. Has anybody tried that I do not want to go
buy it if there are going to be major problems, rather I want a bolt on.

Also, I prefer to stay with the basic config of the engine (EFI etc.).
However, how good are the heads ? Can some serious power be found in
cleaning up the heads ? I know the 5 valve head is pretty sophisticated,
but with casting flash, rough port walls etc., can any power be found there
? Some bikes come from the factory with minor head work, others are just
raw with only the machining for the valves and seats. Older big bore
Ninja's had hand-done head work from the factory, according to an old
article I read.

I like the power on my GTS just fine. Wouldn't want to change a thing!
Rheostatic power with good mid-range. Now, if you wanted to try some things
you would first have to open up the intake by getting rid of the airbox and
mounting KN pods. To accomodate the new air intake you could increase the
injector duration by adjusting the pots on the EFI module closer towards 5
o'clock. Now that you've got the intake side opened up you'd need to replace
the restrictive exhause canister. What improvements this yields is anybody's
guess.

Well now, this subject is very open. Power is determined by amount of
air/fuel
mixture and how efficiently it is burned. My first step would be to explore
the
limits of the EFI system. How much fuel can it efficiently handle, how much
air? Then the exhaust would be explored. Finally internal engine mods. I
wouldn't open the engine until the intake/exhaust systems were analyzed. If
the
intake is doing all it can now it won't make much difference what jugs you
stick
on the engine (assuming they are burning at max efficiency now.)

I think this mechanic is a bit optimistic. I had an FZR 1000 for a while,
and it was something like 125-127 hp. Changing those components on a GTS
would give you an FZR motor essentially, and any other minor differences

RE: Rally sites

2000-08-02 Thread Loss, Joe

The sand is mostly laid down by the snow plows but is IMO not that much of
an issue. Bigger problem is that, although fairly unlikely, snowfall could
ruin the event even in late Spring. Summer isn't too crowded if you avoid
the tourist attractions at the right times. Summer can be warm too although
you can always get high (elevation-wise) for relief. In Boulder/Denver we
had 26 days last month above 90 degrees (almost a record). But yes Fall is
the best time.

There are many good places a rally could be held in CO. My pick of the areas
would be Durango/Telluride, Steamboat Springs, Crested Butte or
Leadville/Salida. I think families would have a great time too.

But since I live here, I won't be voting for CO. If it does end up here I'll
just have to go to the rally via Vancouver just to feel worthy :-)

Joe.

Add one more vote for Colorado. Some points to ponder: in the spring
Colorado roads are covered with sand from the mines and lots of the passes
are closed In the summer Colorado roads are covered in motor homes and mini
vans, making for a frustrating ride. In the fall, last two weeks of
September, Colorado roads are wonderful. No sand, no tourists, no snow, just
wonderful
twisty roads. Why don't we meet in Leadville, cheap motels and a great bar.
There isn't much for the family to do, so leave them at home. Lets make this
a motorcycle trip not a family picnic. My .02. Allan

I like mine GTS and don't need more power, it's already difficult enough to
handel in the wet(rain) because of the 185/50-14 tire. I'm thinking about
mounting the smaller sprocket of the FZR 750. But tat's not important.
About the 145HP FZR, mabey I'm wrong about the HP number but I often hear
that the bikes in the USA are less powerfull then the fullpower versions
here. (german bikes also often have less power because of taxes.) But ther
are also different ways of measuring HP's.Italians always give higher
numbers. It depents off measuring with genarators and gearboxes or without
and that sort of things.
A GTS here has 100 Din PK (should be 100 HP)

Well, rifle-toting bikers are not quite common around here, but being a pro

older bike, which I used every day at work just like the GTS. I took the pvc
tubing approach already mentioned, with a latching system attaching to the

Personally, I just bled them at the front caliper, following the service
manual instructions. There is a special tool that will hold the front
caliper in place, not sure how much it costs, but I just tied up the caliper
with strong string, being carefull not to scratch the front wheels (which is
easy to do). The main thing is to make sure the bleed nipple is the topmost
part, so that all bubbles float to the top.

Oh geez,

Recognizing my limitations, I was just going to limp this in to the
shop, but (1) they said "GT what?" and (2) thay don't have time to do it
anywho. So now I'm learning all about Yamaha ABS. I'll need you huys
to walk me through this, or if one of you nice scanner-owning people
wnated to scan in the relevant pages from the service manual..
(stupid backorder).

I'm looking for a air bubble in the front brake system. The front
master cyclinder makes a squishy noice when I push the lever, leading me
to believe that the air bubble is trapped there. However, the listers
have told me to bleed the system at the ABS pump as well.

OK, where the *!$@ is the bleeder fitting on the ABS pump. (And why
does the ABS pump have the letters FI on it, giving me no end of worry
that I was about to play with the fuel injection system?) The rear
brake is not soft, so are there 2 different circuits to the pump (F and
R)? Once I have the ABS pump bled, I should take off the front caliper,
and raise the bleeder nipple upright, and then do it again from the top,
right?

I haven't even thought about the cooling system yet, but aside from
locating the water pump, will the drain plugs be easy to spot.

Rmember, I'm not only a squid, mechanically challenged, and not that
bright to begin with (I'm a lawyer, so that proves it), I am also
completely new to this bike, so going easy on the SA comments like
"shouldn't be f-ing with brakes if so damn dumb." Believe me, i'm
feeling dumb enough already.

Frustration.

Here's the best (worst) lawyer joke of all.

I was bleeding the brakes today in preparation for
  my trip to sturgis.
Unfortunately, the My-T-Vac was a bit mightier than
  I had hoped, and I
cleaned out the front reservoir entirely. It
allowed me to get rid of all
the sludge that had for some reason built up in
  there, but did have the
unfortunate disadvantage of putting an air bubble
in the system such that I
no longet have front brakes. I pumped about a half
  quart of fluid through
there at different angles, trying to pick up the
  bubble and move it
  through,
  to no avail. Any suggestions?

Also, I was going to flush the coolant, but since
  my manual has not arrived
(back order), i thought it might be a pain and not
  worth it, espcially
  after
the brake fluid incident. Is there any trick to a
  coolant drain/replace on
this bike? Is there a drain plug, or do I remove
some hose or other? If I
do decide to do this, i've heard that the red
  cooland is better for
  aluminum
motors than the green stuff. Consensus?

Those stupid little rubber triangle covers on the
  sides (by one's knees)
  keep
falling off. I was going to put a dab of silicone
  on the little
penis-looking things to keep it in the little
  holes, as they keep falling
  out
because the hole is too big (it's not that the
  penis-looking thing is too
small. Freud would have so much to say). Will
  this work/better ideas?
  I'd
leave them off, but a lot of heat comes through
  there that I'd rather keep
  off my knees.

This will be my first long trip on the GTS. I'm
  riding two-up with as much
luggage as I can get in one of those throw-over
  saddlebag sets and a small
tankbag (read: not much luggage.). Anything I
  should be especially aware

RE: Rally; AMA@Colorado this year

2000-08-02 Thread Loss, Joe

Hey Doug,

How's it going? Unfortunately it looks like I'm going to be in the damn
Mojave desert with work for a couple of weeks starting next week. I am
doubly pissed off seeing as it means I'll have to miss Pikes Peak.

Top o' the Rockies rally would work if no-one felt like doing the leg-work.
I've never been, however have had good reports. Still think it'd be good to
have our very own though.

Cheers Joe.

Another clay pigeon to get splattered: Since CO seems to be the general
venue of choice, how about meeting as a subset of the Top o' the Rockies
rally, held in Paonia CO in late July every year. While it would certainly
be beemer-centric, it IS an all-brands rally and would take care of a lot of
the logistical burden.

Anybody going to the AMA races in Colorado Springs this year? Joe?

More GTS were sold in Portugal then just about any where and I got to meet
the writer who claims to be the cause of it and also claims to be the
first
one to drop it at the roll out in morocco. told him most of us do it so he
should not feel bad. but all the ones I have seen in Portugal have no
ABS.

Hi Guys

Im a Portuguese, with a third GTS on my way. The first one was a 93 no
abs crashed it into a car.
The second one was an American GTS with ABS... guess what ABS problems !
The third, the one i have now, is a national 97 with ABS, and everything is
ok !
The only problem i find in this bike is the oil consuption... the rest is
just perfect !

Oil and Bags

2000-08-02 Thread Lybgts

Just when I thought that we all had bashed the different oils Motorcycle
Consumer News has done a very good article on oils. Except they left out
Amsoil. Ouch! I use it and it seems to do just fine. However I think it
would do all good to find MC News article and read it.
Also just read the posting about the guy that was selling his Krauser
bags. I don't have any but I did not realize that you had to drill holes in
the side covers. I won't like that. I would like to know of other brands
that you could mount without drilling holes. Or is that possible?

2000-08-02 Thread Roberto Alonso

Hey guys,
I'm in the mood for a bit of whining here: I know some of you can't get rid
of the MIME formatting on your messages I don't complain about that, but
when responding to such messages, will you PLEASE kill the M-F thing? Not
that hard to do it clears the digests A LOT!

Also: How is it that there are only 3 or so photos at www.gts1000.org? are
you guys waiting for Brandon to come and take a pic of your bike on your
favorite run? or are you waiting till the rally is over in 2001 to deluge
him? come on, dudes, let's have some cool images up there in the "official"
page! I've done my part - and working on some more.

BTW, Brandon, didn't forget about the screen, just a bit of overflow at work
that prevents me from doing just about anything (except reading the list and
whining, of course).

Later,

Roberto.

PS: Gee, I just noticed that "M-F thing" is also "MIME-Format thing". Talk
about Political Correctness here...

Givi requires a hidden hole in the fender that is not visible unless you lay
on your back and look up. I just had a full set, sides and top, installed by
Givi personnel and am very satisfied with the mounting and the job they did.

Great idea! Brandon, now all you have to do is spend a few months riding
around the country with your camera. I'd do it, but I gotta work. Sorry.

It was disappointing about Amsoil :(--Someone on the
list mentioned an additive to replace wear
inhibitors--was it John Hawke? Which additive was it
and can you remind me why you prefer it?

Very possible with the GIVI's only two slots in
the under fender skirt--not any in the pretty plastic!
