Re: Big bore kit
For all the things the GTS isn't --fastest, lightest, slowest, etc. It IS THE FASTEST STOPING BIKE OUT THERE. :) So for as fast as the R1 is I can out brake them going into the corners, they pass me through the corners and out of the corners but I can brake later and harder. :) I would rather enjoy an extra 30 hp or so, but I don't see an easy solution. So I devote my hoppups to the WR. :) Louis wghalley wrote: I'm going to stick my $.02 worth in Somebody on the list switched to an FZR engine w carbs. Has anybody tried that I do not want to go buy it if there are going to be major problems, rather I want a bolt on. Also, I prefer to stay with the basic config of the engine (EFI etc.). However, how good are the heads ? Can some serious power be found in cleaning up the heads ? I know the 5 valve head is pretty sophisticated, but with casting flash, rough port walls etc., can any power be found there ? Some bikes come from the factory with minor head work, others are just raw with only the machining for the valves and seats. Older big bore Ninja's had hand-done head work from the factory, according to an old article I read. -Original Message- From: Kevin Hawkins [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, August 02, 2000 8:16 AM To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: RE: Big bore kit I like the power on my GTS just fine. Wouldn't want to change a thing! Rheostatic power with good mid-range. Now, if you wanted to try some things you would first have to open up the intake by getting rid of the airbox and mounting KN pods. To accomodate the new air intake you could increase the injector duration by adjusting the pots on the EFI module closer towards 5 o'clock. Now that you've got the intake side opened up you'd need to replace the restrictive exhause canister. What improvements this yields is anybody's guess. RE: Rally sites
The sand is mostly laid down by the snow plows but is IMO not that much of an issue. Bigger problem is that, although fairly unlikely, snowfall could ruin the event even in late Spring. Summer isn't too crowded if you avoid the tourist attractions at the right times. Summer can be warm too although you can always get high (elevation-wise) for relief. In Boulder/Denver we had 26 days last month above 90 degrees (almost a record). But yes Fall is the best time. There are many good places a rally could be held in CO. My pick of the areas would be Durango/Telluride, Steamboat Springs, Crested Butte or Leadville/Salida. I think families would have a great time too. But since I live here, I won't be voting for CO. If it does end up here I'll just have to go to the rally via Vancouver just to feel worthy :-) Joe. -Original Message- From: Allan Parker [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, August 01, 2000 8:25 PM To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Re: Rally sites Add one more vote for Colorado. In the fall, last two weeks of September, Colorado roads are wonderful. No sand, no tourists, no snow, just wonderful twisty roads. Why don't we meet in Leadville, cheap motels and a great bar. Re: Big bore kit
I like mine GTS and don't need more power, it's already difficult enough to handel in the wet(rain) because of the 185/50-14 tire. I'm thinking about mounting the smaller sprocket of the FZR 750. But tat's not important. About the 145HP FZR, mabey I'm wrong about the HP number but I often hear that the bikes in the USA are less powerfull then the fullpower versions here. (german bikes also often have less power because of taxes.) But ther are also different ways of measuring HP's.Italians always give higher numbers. It depents off measuring with genarators and gearboxes or without and that sort of things. A GTS here has 100 Din PK (should be 100 HP) Fred Schneider Holland - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Multiple recipients of list [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, August 02, 2000 5:20 PM Subject: Re: Big bore kit On Wed, 2 Aug 2000, fred schneider wrote: A dutch mechanic/tuner told me to mount the carburators, camshafts and exhoustsystem of an FZR 1000 should give 145 HP I think this mechanic is a bit optimistic. There is a special tool that will hold the front caliper in place, not sure how much it costs, but I just tied up the caliper with strong string, being carefull not to scratch the front wheels (which is easy to do). The main thing is to make sure the bleed nipple is the topmost part, so that all bubbles float to the top. -Original Message- From: Adam Altman [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, August 02, 2000 11:32 AM To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Re: brake bleed/lawyer joke Oh geez, Recognizing my limitations, I was just going to limp this in to the shop, but (1) they said "GT what?" and (2) thay don't have time to do it anywho. The front master cyclinder makes a squishy noice when I push the lever, leading me to believe that the air bubble is trapped there. However, the listers have told me to bleed the system at the ABS pump as well. OK, where the *!$@ is the bleeder fitting on the ABS pump. (And why does the ABS pump have the letters FI on it, giving me no end of worry that I was about to play with the fuel injection system?) The rear brake is not soft, so are there 2 different circuits to the pump (F and R)? Once I have the ABS pump bled, I should take off the front caliper, and raise the bleeder nipple upright, and then do it again from the top, right? I haven't even thought about the cooling system yet, but aside from locating the water pump, will the drain plugs be easy to spot. Rmember, I'm not only a squid, mechanically challenged, and not that bright to begin with (I'm a lawyer, so that proves it), I am also completely new to this bike, so going easy on the SA comments like "shouldn't be f-ing with brakes if so damn dumb." I was bleeding the brakes today in preparation for my trip to sturgis. Unfortunately, the My-T-Vac was a bit mightier than I had hoped, and I cleaned out the front reservoir entirely. It allowed me to get rid of all the sludge that had for some reason built up in there, but did have the unfortunate disadvantage of putting an air bubble in the system such that I no longet have front brakes. I pumped about a half quart of fluid through there at different angles, trying to pick up the bubble and move it through, to no avail. Any suggestions? Also, I was going to flush the coolant, but since my manual has not arrived (back order), i thought it might be a pain and not worth it, espcially after the brake fluid incident. Is there any trick to a coolant drain/replace on this bike? Is there a drain plug, or do I remove some hose or other? If I do decide to do this, i've heard that the red cooland is better for aluminum motors than the green stuff. Consensus? Those stupid little rubber triangle covers on the sides (by one's knees) keep falling off. I was going to put a dab of silicone on the little penis-looking things to keep it in the little holes, as they keep falling out because the hole is too big (it's not that the penis-looking thing is too small. Freud would have so much to say). Will this work/better ideas? I'd leave them off, but a lot of heat comes through there that I'd rather keep off my knees. This will be my first long trip on the GTS. --- [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Just when I thought that we all had bashed the different oils Motorcycle Consumer News has done a very good article on oils. Except they left out Amsoil. Ouch! I use it and it seems to do just fine. However I think it would do all good to find MC News article and read it. It was disappointing about Amsoil :(--Someone on the list mentioned an additive to replace wear inhibitors--was it John Hawke? Which additive was it and can you remind me why you prefer it? Also just read the posting about the guy that was selling his Krauser bags. I don't have any but I did not realize that you had to drill holes in the side covers. I won't like that. I would like to know of other brands that you could mount without drilling holes. Or is that possible? Very possible with the GIVI's only two slots in the under fender skirt--not any in the pretty plastic! Ken Swartz FL Kev __ Do You Yahoo!? Kick off your party with Yahoo!
