IIRC that was Kirrily Robert aka Skud. It was on her elizabethan geek
website which no longer seems to exists

Thanks for sending it though - I found a Google cached version of the
page and gave me some ideas :)

Re: [h-cost] Lacing rings

2005-07-24 Thread Diana Habra

Does anyone know the merchant who sold me a supply of small (less than 1/4
 inch)
but sturdy brass rings (no visible seam)

I sell these rings. They are 20 for $1.00 and you can buy as many or as
few as you want.

Here is the link:

http://www.renaissancefabrics.net/products.php?int_era_id=5start_count_url=36

or you can go to my homepage at

http://www.renaissancefabrics.net/index.php

and do a search for lacing rings. They are about 3/8 in diameter and
very sturdy!

Hope that helps!

That's probably the most helpful link to give as their categores are quite
nice to just jump into:
for you, scroll down to costume-1910s

Hi Michaela,

Thanks for sharing this link with us.

Depending on time frame, I just want to warn people that the images may not
be accurate, as to me, some look rather Victorian in styling. I am
currently looking over the 1500s England to see what they have. Some are
not in the right time frame (ie images noted as being in the reign of James
I, which was 1600s). Some are noted on the image as being of a certain
date, but the style of garment is definitely incorrect for that date. (ie:
Elizabeth, 1559., IMAGE ID: 811192 ). Most make me want to see the
original, if there is any. Thankfully, they do have detailed info on where
the plates originally come from in most cases.

There is one lady holding a handbag! ([Woman in long dress holding a
handbag]. IMAGE ID: 811216) Oh, I've never seen that style of purse in this
time period before.

There is one that I have become partial to. Anyone know if there is an
actual portrait this image may be based on?

Re: [h-cost] Fabric dying

2005-07-24 Thread Diana Habra

 Greetings again,

I'm working on a couple of gowns and will be needing to write
something up about how I would have dyed them the color they are.
Since, I am not a dyer (yet). Can someone give me a name of a good book
on medieval dyes that I may be able to find at my local library? The
dye recipes I am looking for are a pink (more of a dusty rose) and a
 bluish violet.

I have done some natural dyeing in the past but I can't remember the books
that I used as reference (my dyeing partner bought and kept the books).

Your best bet may be to start with your library...older books are still
good references and won't cost you anything. Once you decide to try some
dyeing yourself, you may want to invest in some books because they will
have weights and measures that will help immensely.

And if you want bonus points from the judges, mention how colorfast the
dye is. You can achieve many colors using all kinds of natural dyestuffs
but many of them will fade either quickly or eventually.

Good luck sorry I couldn't give you better suggestions!

I'm pretty sure those are from Victorian costumes books, so anythign prior
to the mid 19thC I really would take with a grain of salt. I did notice
quite a few of the German images were from trachtenbuch that can be found
online (Wiegel, Jost Amman...) They were not too bad actually, being based
on woodcuts. The colours were pretty fantastical though;)

There is one lady holding a handbag! ([Woman in long dress holding a

I'm having major troubles getting the images to load .. Ok got it. This
looks like it could be cobbled from Vicello's book perhaps?

It looks a bit like some SPanish or Spanish inspired portraits actually. I
suspect a half or bustlength portrait from which they have extrapolated the
skirt.
