also, this is a bit of a boast, and I will not be able to give the
name of the store (i am going to go back on sat, and i just know

 light weights for 3.50 (plus 8 5/8th % sales tax). I think I am
going to buy a variity about $400

I cant remember all the colors, but if anyone wants to pay me for

If they've got a navy blue linen, I'd be interested in up to 10 yards.

Lining fabric, was Re: [h-cost] Re: Fitting Issues (and linen prices)

2005-08-26 Thread Joan Jurancich
Lack of a linen undergarment will less comfortable. If she is very
insistent on not wearing a chemise, use lightweight linen in the
appropriate color to line the gown. Satin is a fairly tight weave and
generally does not breathe all that well, whether it is silk or not,
so I would not use satin for the lining.

The future MIL has made her choice and really liked
the Florentine
-(http://www.siue.edu/COSTUMES/PLATE23AX.HTML) - so we
are going with that, but with wide sleeves and a hair
style like the woman's on the left.

Burgundy in a jacquard over a solid dark (navy) blue,
and the sleeves lined with a lightweight burgundy
color. Adding a chemise is out of the question as she
was balking at two layers.

Any ideas what would be a good lining fabric - I was
thinking of a light weight satin (if there is such a
thing).

Thanks again,
Annette M

 Subject: [h-cost] Fitting issues

My future MIL wants a period dress for the wedding
too. She is 5'-2 and wears a man's 2x shirt. Due to
fibromyalgia she will not wear anything very fitted,
 a
belt, or anything else that will create any pressure
or tension, especially on her lower back. She also
detests anything that might accentuate the bust. But
 I
don't want to make her look like she is wearing a
 tent
 either.

The period is 14th - 15th century. Her dress does
 not
have to be historically accurate, just look the
 part.

I was thinking a houppelande would do well with most
of these requirements. I haven't really studied them
as to fit so I don't know just how fitted they might
be over the bust and waist. I wonder if making it
 less
so will create a tent-like appearance.

Or perhaps a basic chemise and tunic type dress with
side lacing so that it can be gathered in a bit, but
 not snugly.

This picture from a series of German prints also
 gave
me some ideas. The woman on the right, but
 simplified.
 http://www.siue.edu/COSTUMES/PLATE23AX.HTML

 Any suggestions or ideas?

 Thanks,
 Annette M

It's not too hard to find DVD players that will play discs from all
regions.

In other news, the BBC is considering making its programmes available
for viewing over the internet... next year. Initially restricted to UK
viewers only, but that could change as attitudes about broadcasting
move into the 21st century.

Do remember that that is a 2nd hand image done in the 1840s and has some
Victorian flair to it. See if you can find the original inspiration for that
plate.

The fabrics might be a little more drapey in the original.

And the sleeve poofs can of course be faked...realistically by actually
making up the little sleeve bits and lacing them all together over a full very
light linen [or something like it] undersleeve all set into the gown's armseye
together. Add a bit of fake chemise neckline to the gown's neckline and it
will looks greatlike she's wearing a chemise.

All so true.

If you were meaning the over-gown...the Jacquard...you needn't line it if
it's a real Jacquard. The wrong side will look fine. Just do french seams and

maybe bind the outer edges with the self fabric. Of course if it needs some
body, line it with some light crisp linen.
