Hi, Thank you for the response! I'll try to answer all the emails at once. I will hopefully get the Cut of Men's Clothes (Norah Waugh) and the Cut of Women's Clothes as a X-mas present from my husband. I already read in a revieuw that the patterns are from pre-1780s and the other half from 1840 on. But I am also planning on making a 1860 or 1885 Dickens fair costume for my husband. I have the Laughing Moon 109 men's frock coat for that. It will be the fhirst time I will make something tailord as that and the pattern looks quite difficult. Diana Snipp Actually, if you look closer at the embroidered white dresses, they use a very light cotton fabric and leave it smooth across the front. Then start your pleating around where the arms hang and the majority of the pleats are in the back. It is much more flattering than pleating or gathering all around the top of the skirt. This is not one of the coats that is cut straight over at the front, but has the curves from previous fashion. That book is on my wish list too. I would love to make a beautifull embroidered 18th century costume for my husband like the ones you make. And I probaby will some day. A German coat a'la 1580. Front opening fitted bodice, skirt pleated in the back. Made of rust fulled wool, lined with black Muppet fur. The long sleeves end in hefty turned back cuffs, and a black silk cord is couched along the entire circumference. Just for fun. Didn't even bother to hand sew this one. I am making Vogue 2607 in an iridescent burgundy silk dupioni from fabric.com, and commissioning a pearl and garnet necklace from Israel to wear with it. My husband plans to wear a black jacket with charcoal mock turtle neck and black pants, as the perfect foil for my eye popping attire. Well as you all know, the yellow dress. . But for myself, cant use my dressdummy for something for myself , i have ben wanting to make me a cavallier outfit. 'There is an opera masqued ball in february again and i have this grey damask wich is a cotton/(dont remember the name) blend. I also have this reproduktion reticella lace i baught from England for the cuffs and standing band. I want to make it an early cavallier style. I even have enough fabric to make a female outfit two, for my niece if she wants to go because i emptied all the shop for this bargain fabric. Newyear is cavallier time... Dark blue faille 1882 bustle dress (kick pleat skirt and cuirass bodice), with inset dark blue figured velvet panel down front of skirt and on front of bodice; cuffs and standup collar also figured velvet. White lace at wrist and top of collar. About a dozen dark blue jewel and gold buttons down the front. Very small black silk on buckram bonnet with faux jet and ribbon trim sitting on top, that goes with the black cotton velvet talma which has jet beading along the upper edge of the deep looped fringe. It is soft white lawn with tiny pink rosebuds and very delicate moss green vines and leaves. And I wanted to find a ribbon to match the green, but so far have been out of luck. I may have to go with the pink. Well One of my dummies is wearing a very pink dress. It is finished but it reminds me that I am going to make it again but then with a long skirt and in very pale blue. I did exactly the same thing (picking off horrid flowers) a couple of months ago. The final result was a whole ziploc bag full of little black linen flowers, which I passed on to a friend, who can actually *do* something with them, and a bolt of perfectly nice, medium-weight, white linen. Cost? Less than $2/yd (on sale at JoAnn's) Satisfaction? Right now mine's topless. On her bottom half she's wearing the red with yellow fleur de lis skirt that will be the lower half of my new 1635 Cavalier gown for 12th Night. The bodice is cut out, but I'm embroidering it with gold thread and pearls before I sew it together. She also has a leather bat-wing-horned-looking mask sitting on top of a white irridecent veil where her head would be if she had one, mostly because I can't find a place to put the mask and I need to remember to return the veil to its owner. My son has armor draped on it. I made a duct tape dummy lost weight and moved it to the garage. I have two forms, one is not at all my size (I wish!) but it's good enough to display gowns on. It's an antique style with the seperate plates. The other is modern foam with cotton cover. It's not exactly my size, but ti's closer than the other one- got it when a fabric store was closing for cheap. The antique form has my vamprie character, Sadie, on it right now. She's based on the 1880's 'late bustle' style, but with very little regard for period construction. She's all purple bridal satin with black trim and sequins. I made her to work Fright Fest at Six Flag's Great America a few years back and decided I really liked her so I trot her out periodically. I just wore her for the WindyCon masquerade competition and won 'Best in Show'.which makes me feel like I should be trotted around a ring on a leash and then rewarded with a doggie biscuitbut maybe not. But the clothes hanger that is taking the place in my life of a dressmaker's dummy is wearing the first few parts of a 10th c Lithuanian costume I am attempting to recreate--the (completed) tunic and the (incomplete) shawl. The overskirt, veil and circlet I've made are done too--but those don't stay on a hanger very well. :-) I have socks, Baltic-style slippers, and a wool sash that I've purchased. One is wearing an Edwardian outfit in a great shade of purple (it was a pink I overdyed with blue) with white lace trim around the neck, decorating the top, and the bottom of the sleeves. The skirt has white insertions where the side panels met the front panel, all of this needs ribbons laced through it, but I haven't find a color I liked yet. I made to wear to an event this summer and liked the way it turned out. the other is wearing: a crinoline, a silk ruffled petticoat, a scarlet lace tiered petticoat, a bright purple underskirt, and a black silk and lace tiered skirt. On top she has a black lace blouse with leg-o-mutton sleeves. and a bright red 7 wide belt that is tied with red satin ribbon. The skirt is tucked up so all the layers show. We don't have a dummy either. But, the DH is busy making 2 teddy bears and 2 shoulder wraps out of an old mink coat. A co-worker of mine had this old coat from her grandmother, and she asked if we could make bears and wraps out of it for her granddaughters. So, I spent about 2 weeks carefully picking the whole thing apart, now the re-construction begins. The wraps will be lined with the original coat lining, and there were some monogram appliques on the lining that will be applied to one of the wraps as well. We'll probably put the original coat label on the other wrap. My project for the next 1.5 months will be baking holiday goodies and the various holiday dinners. I'm storing a couple of hats on her right now, including my basic Harry
Potter's World hat. Other than that she's just wearing a t-shirt with the
bones of the human torso and hips printed on it. It belongs to her
actually. I used to take her to schools to put costumes on, for historical
talks, and the little kids would giggle when the clothes came off. But
they don't giggle when they see bones underneath. (It ain't no sin to take
off your skin and dance around in your bones.)
