time to sew!

[h-cost] Here's my show and tell...

2006-01-28 Thread Kristin
I just joined the list in December... I was so excited to find a list with
others interested in making costumes / reproduction clothing!

I've always wanted to make something, feeling like I was born in the wrong
century since I was a little girl. Now, I've finally begun working on a
late 1700's style outfit. I say style, because it's cotton, and I'm sure
the colors and prints are not exactly period either.

It's still very much a work in progress, and keep in mind that it's my first
attempt at a historically based outfit.

I haven't figured out an easy way to create a link to the album, so I'm
forwarding the link I sent to myself.

[h-cost] Compression differentials, was Re: Elizabethan Corset habits.

2006-01-28 Thread Melanie Schuessler
Perhaps it is a personal perception thing, but as a size 8
corset-wearing woman who worked for years corsetting larger opera
singers, I can tell you that in my experience, the larger the woman, the
more a corset can compress without discomfort. You can't cinch me more
than one or two inches smaller than my actual measurements without it
really starting to cramp my style. On ladies of size 18, though, I've
pulled in four inches and been told, Oh, just keep going--that feels
fine. I have occasionally come across a larger woman who was more
firmly packed, if you will, and whose corset compression was more
similar to mine.

It's not just a comfort thing--you can tell when you're lacing someone
in when the compression should stop. Up to that point, it's about the
corset fitting properly, not shifting around, and providing support.
After that point, it's about the comfort of the wearer and their ability
to do whatever they need to do while wearing it.

Melanie Schuessler

At 10:47 AM 1/27/2006, you wrote:

I find that when a larger woman wears a corset, there
really isn't a major change in her shape- it's just
smoother. A smaller woman, because she does have less
stuff to squish, will see more dramatic response to
the compression. Add to that a bumroll on a small
woman and the difference becomes even more pronounced,
whereas a larger woman likely won't need one at all;
the corset will have pinched just enough that her hips
will have popped out all by themselves.

I am one of those larger women and my tailor has remarked that I am
fairly squishy in the torso when being fitted for a corset. Turns out
that I have a fairly small backside and not much in the hips, so I don't
have anything to pop out for a bumroll shape. I would guess that the
way you are shaped by a corset is very individual and depends upon your
natural shape (and how the corset is designed and fitted). But we can
all look great in our gowns. Aren't optical illusions wonderful? :-D

I think that is a very reasonable price. Just as a guideline, I have a
friend who is a wonderful fiber artist (amongst many other things) she
marks her wares up 200%. Not sure what this would make your bags cost,
but thought it might be an idea to consider. Meanwhile, I am putting on
my thinking cap to dream up a commission from you..

Actually, the saran-wrap thing was originally suggested by Marabel Morgan

I think that one actually qualifies as historic costume -- 1973.

Based on my income (Im a student), they're expensive. If I had a Real

[h-cost] Fabric question SOT

2006-01-28 Thread otsisto
I am looking for a light weight material to make a banner.
I have been recommended Silk Noil as a possible fabric.
How sturdy is silk noil as I have never worked with this material.
What would you recommend? Needs to not look modern.
I have some idea what I am looking for but I am covering all bases.
Basically, there is a 6' x 2 1/2'(tapering) embroidered and appliqued
banner. It is made of silk and wool. The creator of the banner added an
upholstery fringe (allegedly silk) around the edge. This banner is usually
carried into battle, so what I am looking into is making a copy so that this
beautiful banner won't get trashed. Also because of the fringe and it being
top heavy it makes things difficult for the carrier. During a good wind the
banner could easily take out someone (either army's personnel, it doesn't
discriminate) or wrap itself around the carrier (On the bright side it does
make it harder for the opposition army to take it when they have to deal
with a body).
If I take on the project, I have two weeks to complete it.

Thank you,
De
