Re: [h-cost] German or Dutch headdress web page

2006-07-20 Thread michaela
Sorry to bother you with a vague, rambling and inarticulate question, but
I'm going nuts. I know I've seen a web page on how to make a certain style
of
headdress which is basically a white linen tube with the front edges
flipped
back to frame the face -- kind of like the Dutch folk costume style, but
earlier. I can't seem to find the web page, and I can't even remember what
the
date/location was for the headdress. (I need it for a fantasy application,
so it
doesn't matter to me.) Does this ring a bell for any of you guys?

Yu could try asking here, go back one page you'll find a few pictures of a
flemish headdress.

I've made two headdresses of Cleves/Cologne:
http://costumes.glittersweet.com/sca/k/2cleveshat.htm
and a linen version:
http://costumes.glittersweet.com/sca/k/3cleves.htm
As mentioned I wasn't too happy with my final result, but that was as much
to do with feeling like the Flying Nun as not being satisfied with shape and
materials.

No idea if any of these are what you are after.

[h-cost] German or Dutch headdress web page

2006-07-20 Thread tearoses
Thanks, Michaela, that first link looks like it might be the right seamstress,
if not the right web page.

And, by the way, the link from your linen Cleves page to the documentation page
seems to be broken.

Thanks!

[h-cost] Book inventory software question

2006-07-20 Thread Lynn Downward

In February there was a discussion about using software about getting
information about published books into an inventory from websites.
One, mentioned by Kimiko, was Book Collector, where you enter the ISBN
number and the software does the research using amazon.com for
example. There was another program mentioned where you type in the
book title, but I didn't keep the information for some reason. Can
anyone tell me what that program is called? Are these two programs,
and any others that people have tried for both Mac and PC? I've been
trying to write down the information on my inventory of costume and
sewing books, but it's taking forever – three nights of work and I
only have about 75 of the books listed. And then I'll have to transfer
from hand-written forms to software.

TIA
LynnD

I found some beauties on Ebay for under $35. All manner of styles,
including several from the teens.

Would anybody know of a good source for a reasonably
priced Straw Boater or Bowler Hat?

My father recently joined a barbershop group and would
like to have one (either or - doesn't matter). He is
not dedicated enough to need one of the $100 ones that
all seem to be imported from Italy, but he definately
needs better than the $5 Halloween costume. Under $50
would be my preferance.

Re: [h-cost] Book inventory software question

2006-07-20 Thread Lynn Downward

Im sharing this information with the group in the hopes that it will
interest or help someone else who is in the same point that I am -
I've bought two of the same Dover books twice because I didn't
remember I already had it. I'm also hoping someone has used some of
the software out there and can give me some feedback. If no one else
is interested, I'll take the conversation private.

Thanks for the input, Kimiko. I looked up Book Collector on your
second recommendation; they didn't show up on my first Google of the
topic. They look pretty good, but I've already got 75 books written
up; with Book Collector's free 100 demo, but I may try it anyway. I
checked into Readerware and that looks pretty interesting. They have a
bundle of 3 products, one for books, one for CDs and one for
DVDs/VHS/Laser disks, all for $75. I think it would pay for itself
fairly quickly. Collectorz.com Book Collector also has a 100 book demo
and has software for music and movies too. I didn't realize how much
there is out there.

If anyone has used any of these products, please let me know.

Thanks,
LynnD

Hi LynnD.

I like Book Collector, and someday when I get close to the number of books
for the paid version I will pay for it. That is getting close.

And it does do Macs. This is from their web site.
This organizer software runs on Windows 98, ME, 2000 and XP and Apple Mac OS X
10.3 and higher.

Unfortunately for those running Linux, they have no plans to have a
compatible program.

There are other programs, and one is actually an online library system. I
don't remember the name of it, or where it is located, and can't seem to google
it for some reason. Must not be using the right terms.

[h-cost] Charging for sewing

2006-07-20 Thread Sharon at Collierfam.com
Dear Listees,
I have been asked by some folks to make some costumes for them. Problem is,
I've only worked in community theatre before and that doesn't pay anything
(about $300 per show). For those of you that do sewing as a business, how
much do you charge for sewing? Do you charge by the job or the hour? Any
help in this would be greatly appreciated.

I charge by the hour. The problem is doing a proper estimate
beforehand. I almost always underestimate.
