[h-cost] Thanks (finding online archive)

2007-01-25 Thread Tania Gruning
Thanks a lot for the answers.
It was the HEART archive I was looking for, but the other two resources are
wonderful too, and I look forward to looking them through. Knew someone on this
list would be able to help

of mosquitoes next summer)

 Hiya all.

I have tried to search the archive, but have been unable to locate
 this resource.

It is a online archive with out of print and antique books scanned
in, that you can download in txt or pdf.

The books are all on womens concerns: Sewing, embroidery,
householdmanagement, childcare and some other miscellanious things.

The archive is hosted by a large university, and the archive
currently have 1000's of books starting from around 1750 and forward.

This isan't that big of an archive, but it's the only one that I know of.

[h-cost] Restringing job

I have a long, 1920s style crystal bead necklace that needs restringing.
I hired someone before and they totally screwed up the job. If anyone
is interested in doing it, please email me.

My sister used to work for a jeweler and did a lot of stringing of beads and
pearls. She says she might be interested but would need more details. She's in
Arizona--you can e-mail her at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you want to pursue!

[h-cost] pattern webpage

2007-01-25 Thread Zuzana Kraemerova
Hi,

I've just found a German webpage which has the largest collection of patterns
(historical, fantasy and others) I ever saw being sold by just one company. The
patterns come from smaller pattern making companies such as ageless patterns,
mantua maker etc. The only disadvantage is that it's all in German (and thereby
all shipping from Gemany).
  There it is:

I just wanted to let you know:-))

I'd like to add, since I have dealt several times with this company, that the
owner is absolutely wonderful, bending over backwards, and the prices are
cheaper than in the UK and that includes shipping. I am now buying my patterns
from them despite being in the UK.

I cannot recommend them enough.

Re: [h-cost] craft books

2007-01-25 Thread LLOYD MITCHELL
The company specializes in craft books and stuff for all sorts of
interests...textiles, beading, tolecraft, ceramics, knitting and such. They
can be found at www.crafterschoice.com. I have been a suscriber for many
years . Every once and a while they do a blowout sale...buy one at club
price and add any you like to the list at 50% off.

I have found many great titles that add to my costume crafting lore. Like
Pieceworks magazine, they bring old master methods and means right to my
work table.

Re: [h-cost] craft books

2007-01-25 Thread LLOYD MITCHELL

Thank you for your encouragement.

I am in the last days of finishing the Ditchley gown for a 22 doll and am
mostly pleased. I made about 200 beaded motiffs with 'rubies' and pearls,
mounted on dime-sized golden lace and attached them as appliques in as near
the same as one can count and surmise what cannot be seen on the gown of the
portrait. I was surprised at Hunnicut's description of the one she did for
ER...she mounted only the ones that would be seen by the camera. La.

Now I understand why!

Dear Kathleen,
Congratulations with your new books. I am sure something important and
beautifull wil come to life, when you get your mind to do something with
it.
Its many things that kick you in the right directions, books and other
things.
One of the major things that gave me a real kick was the australian
embroidery magazine Inspirations. I subscribed for it for 2 years, and
also got a lot of their back issues. I dont subscribe for it anymore,
because its almost the same style wich goes on with their issues, and i
was only interrested to learn some things from them.

But they surely was a big inspiration for me.

Bjarne

I just got a nice packet of How-to books from Crafters super sale. Great
reference stuff.

Beginner's guide to GOLDWORK (Chamberlin)
Elegant ribbon work (Gibb)
Ribbon Embroidery and Stump Work (Di van Niekerk) The last two put me in
the mind of what Bjarne so delights us with..Now for time to try to work
some of this out...so many good ideas and so little time. Lots of
pictures and good explanation on setting up the fram ,transferring
pattern, and manipulating the needle and other tools.. Sort of what is
under discussion now?

[h-cost] Need Help

2007-01-25 Thread Diana Habra
Hello list,

Does anyone out there have a link to color descriptions that they could
share?

I am looking to find out what the color dove gray really is. I thought I
knew but now I am not so sure.

Is it a light gray with a blue tone or light gray with a pinkish-brown tone
(kind of closer to taupe)? Also, which color would you most likely want to
use for Victorian costuming and/or men's suits?

Thanks!

[h-cost] Seeking early edition of Norris

2007-01-25 Thread Robin Netherton

Does anyone on the list have in their own collection a copy of the
original editions of Herbert Norris's Costume Fashion, vol. 2 (Senlac
to Bosworth, 1066-1485) -- as opposed to the Dover reprint?

I need to compare a passage in two printings: 1927 and 1931.

The Dover reprint is supposedly a republication of the 1927 edition, but
the quote I'm looking at very likely refers to another work that wasn't
published till 1928. Thus my quandary. I need to know which of them was
drawing on the other, and that means figuring out when Norris first made
his statement.

I can probably get one via ILL, but I don't think I can get both
simultaneously. If necessary, I'll start running around to the local
university libraries, but I thought I'd try here first. If it turns out
the quote is in only one volume, I can try to ILL that from here.
