Scroll down to the first of the last two pictures. These are not as loose as
the previous. Similar to a previously presented print.

Only the Shadow knows...

OK, actually the Shadow doesn't know either. Nobody knows. But it
seems unlikely that menstruation would have had a big effect on
braies-wearing, since they wouldn't have been snug enough to keep
anything in place. Immediately before modern adhesive pads came into
use, a belt-and-pad arrangement was the norm-- it's possible that
Medieval women had something similar.

RE: [h-cost] What happened to tudor-portraits.com?

2007-09-15 Thread Jennifer Byrne
I don't know about the tudor-portraits.com site but this site:
http://www.marileecody.com/images.html is my favorite for pictures of a lot
of Tudor era people.

Well, there was an email link on the page via the Way Back Machine. I've
emailed the site owner; so far it hasn't bounced back, so hopefully,
we'll soon have an answer as to whether it's gone or has just been moved.

Re: [h-cost] comfort vs. fashion

2007-09-15 Thread JAMES OGILVIE

You would prefer stockings and a garter belt?

Well, I don't recall that stockings and a light panty girdle were much worse
to wear and were easier to put on. But it's not a question of stockings vs.
pantihose - there are many ways to cloth the body without either one.

Oh my gosh--having to hook the stockings to the little tabs--ugh! And
managing the whole assemblage in the restroom. . . .

I confess, I don't wear hose most of the summer, but do prefer them now that
fall is here. I don't wear pants very often, and I do like something
covering my feet when I'm wearing shoes other than sandals, and socks look
pretty
silly on a woman of a certain age, especially in an office.

Re: [h-cost] middle ages: braies for women?

2007-09-15 Thread Beth and Bob Matney

Melanie,

Late Iron age.. basically contemporaneous with Late Roman Empire.

The best in English about these is in
Hald, Margrethe. Ancient Danish Textiles from
Bogs and Burials: A Comparative Study of Costume
and Iron Age Textiles. [Copenhagen]: National
Museum of Denmark, 1980. ISBN: 8748003123 OCLC:
8081458 pp. 328-335. Thorsberg and Daetgen photos and drawings.

The original find (from Schlabow):
Moorleichenfund von Dätgen bei Nortorf, Kr. Rendsburg, 1906 - Kleidungsstucke.

If you wish to read the German text from Schlabow, I can send it to you.

There just isn't a lot of pants extant from
archaeology... male or female... but then there
aren't many dresses either. So little evidence either way sigh

[h-cost] Old and Interesting site

I found this site and thought some of you might enjoy it too.

http://www.oldandinteresting.com/default.aspx

Tons of neat stuff on early domestic chores, tools and methods,
especially laundry. Mostly 18th, 19th and early 20th century stuff, but
some earlier references here and there.

RE: [h-cost] wool for fulling

2007-09-15 Thread zelda crusher

Is there a quick and easy way to know whether a wool fabric is a good candidate
for fulling? My experiments so far have had wildly different results (the one
which I bought marked 100% wool -a suiting- shrank almost not at all), the
other was a blanket from Value Village (which I did the burn test on the sly in
the store) shrank about the equivalent of my knitting with a worsted yarn.
Thanks for any input.

I got an email back from the site owner. He says it will be back up
within the month; there's apparently some issues with a museum and Yahoo.

Re: [h-cost] speedy 18th century headwear

2007-09-15 Thread Elizabeth Walpole
Hi everyone, thanks for the advice, I went shopping on Friday and ended up
finding a cheap felt tricorn hat from a 'dollar store' type shop so I
decided as the theme was pirates I would use it instead of investing time
experimenting with a cap, I did achieve big hair but let it down later in
the night as the weight was giving me a headache. I only got one photo of
the completed ensemble, you can see it here
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1095/1389185881_2bae00cb28.jpg (unfortunately
my hair came out looking darker than it does in real life and blended in
with the hat so it's hard to see the effect of my big hair)
