Re: [h-cost] Re: wedding in historical costumes -1830s mens' patterns

2007-10-09 Thread Barbara -_- M aren
Hello De ,

thanks for doing all this research -- I have now done some myself.

(looots of other links, and this one)
 http://www.longago.com/colonialmen.html

My still-fiance has pretty much told me that what he would like is the
1790's Frock Coate' 1837 - 1890 from this page, but they are saying
on their main page that they (Harper House) have just changed hands
and moved and might not have all items ready for shipping.

http://www.lostcoasthistpatterns.com/Menspatterns.html seem to carry
the same frock, but the e-mail even bounced.

At a closer look, there doesn't seem to be that much out there!
Everybody is carrying items by everybody else -- this frock for
example is by Tailor's Guide, so I thought I'd ask them directly.

In fact, I've only found a few online pattern shops which have their
own patterns for this period:

Tailor's Guide http://www.tailorsguide.com/
(http://www.tailorsguide.com/images/f-coat.html)

Rocking Horse Farm (http://rockinghorse-farm.com/ ) -- but they are
closed until end of October

Kannik's Korner have a few interesting things at
http://www.kannikskorner.com/patmen2.htm

and of course Past Patterns, but at
http://www.pastpatterns.com/men.html, nothing resembles that style.

Does anyone on this list have any experience with these businesses?
(if not, I'll probably be the first one). I myself have already traded
with Past Patterns, and the service was prompt and very good. Even as
I'm ordering from outside the country.

btw... oh yes... has anyone made any of their patterns and can point
to pictures? It would be great to see them made up.

I have used Past patterns and have learned that you definitly need a mock
up. Some of their patterns have problems and not always in the same area.
Clear instruction has been the main problem.

Re: [h-cost] Who licenses or acts as an agent for textile designs

2007-10-09 Thread Lavolta Press

Thanks, will pass it on.

If memory serves (which maybe it doesn't), I saw or even subscribed to
their journal back when I was doing a lot of weaving. If it's the one I
remember, it described a lot of interesting techniques being used by
textile artists.

[h-cost] Re: Kinko's Ignorance

2007-10-09 Thread Leah L Watts
 We don't go in
there anymore--we go to a small but competent copy center owned by
local people who DO understand fair use. So I can't tell you if my
local Kinko's has people patrolling. But I'd suspect that, patrols
 or
not, if they happened to notice someone copying out of a magazine or
other bound object they'd step in. I imagine other people have more
extensive experience with Kinko's and can comment more definitively.

I've needed to photocopy character sheets for convention games out of the
book(s) I'm demoing, have done this on several occasions, and have never
been chased down by Kinko's employees. Of course, the closest one to my
job is always busy, I might be sneaking under the radar simply by not
chasing down the employees myself with questions.

still make something out of that.

Can you remove the quilting without leaving marks or permanent stitch

With satin, you are looking more at Renaissance fudging then Medieval,
especially shiny satin. Your also looking at winter attire with this
  satin
as it does not breath. Plus you should not make anything out of it that
  you
will want to wear around a fire.
If you are in SCA or similar group and if you have a coat of arms the
  has
green in it you could use the satin for heraldic display stuff.
Though it would not be material of the 1300s and 1400s, you could make a
sideless surcoat. Could use it for a cloak lining. Or you could make a

I've already used the sheets to make a simple
kirtle. My problem is that I'm not exactly sure what to make out of it.
Not only is it satin, but its quilted in sort of a strange way, I cannot
find pictures and I would take one, but an aquaintance has my camera at
  the
moment. The quilting is all symmetrical, in straight lines, but intead
  of
being noral quiltingit has some of it sticking up on some of the seams,
  I'm
not really sure how to perscribe it. I have a comforter, pillow cases
  and
curtains. Preferably the clothing I would creat out of it would be in a
medieval style. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.Thank
  you.
